Feast Of Tabernacles Research Paper
The Feast of Tabernacles was the third feast the Jews celebrated and it also was one of the pilgrimages
they made. The other two feast celebrated are they Passover and the Pentecost. During these times the
people were required to travel to the Temple. Each of the feasts that went on was celebrated annually.
The Feast of Tabernacles was celebrated in the seventh month, which corresponds with our month of
October, on the fifteenth day and it would last for eight days. The Feast of Tabernacles began when the
harvest was finished which would be five days after the Day of Atonement. The Feast of Tabernacles
can also be known as the Feast of Booths. The Feast of Tabernacles was sometimes called the Feast of
Ingathering because of it marking the end of the harvest, which made it a time of rejoicing. The Feast
of Tables came from the Hebrew word Sukkot. The purpose of the feast was a time to remember the
40 years spent in the wilderness, the journey and deliverance from slavery to the promised land, and to
remind people that we are only pilgrims on the earth. The feast served also as a time to remember God
s direction in the wilderness wanderings. Finally, it served as a time to remember the protection God

The practices involved getting water from the pool of Siloam and pouring some out; the other practice
involved a lighting ceremony where four candelabras that contained golden bowls would be filled
with oil and then lit. Each day of the feast a sacrifice would be made. Sacrifices would be made with
bulls, rams, lambs, and goats. Some of the sacrifices made were the burnt offerings would be made for
sin, meat offering would be made for fellowship, and drink offerings would be made for rejoicing.
Prayers would be recited during the feast and the people would hear about God s providence and
provision to the people of Israel during their

Write About the Ways in Which Steinbeck Presents Either...
Write about the ways in which Steinbeck presents either Crooks or Curley s wife. To what extent does
he create sympathy for either of these characters? Of Mice and Men is set in 1930 s America in the
middle of the economic depression. It is geared towards the pursuit of the American dream, promoting
the ideas of equality, life, liberty and happiness. Steinbeck uses Crooks, and to some extent Curley s
wife to challenge the perception of equality and sometimes the language used is, by modern standards,
racist and misogynistic. There is an irony in the fact that the people judging Crooks are less intelligent
than he is and they refuse to look at anything other than the stereotype of his ethnicity. Steinbeck

When Lennie first enters, Crooks is at first defensive as he is not used to visitors invading his personal
space. He then realises he can have some fun with Lennie, who is nowhere near his intellectual equal
and Crooks reveals a slightly sadistic streak. He metaphorically, dances all over the slow witted
Lennie and is far too quick for him. While he is trying to make the point that although Lennie has
George, he is all alone, he enjoys tormenting Lennie Crooks face lighted with pleasure in his torture.
(Steinbeck, 1937, p75). Perhaps this was one of the few opportunities he had to sharpen his mind, and
he seized it. However, he was quick enough to realise the danger when Lennie was upset and backed
down immediately. This was undoubtedly self preservation, as Lennie was a big man whom had
recently mangled Curley s hand, but he may have realised he had gone too far and wanted to rectify
the situation. Steinbeck uses Crooks conversation with Lennie as a means for Crooks to vocalise his
position. Lennie asks why he is not welcome in the bunk room and Crooks is aware of the fact he has
to spell it out for Lennie (and the reader) and replies Cause I m black. They play cards in there, but I
can t play because I m black. (Steinbeck, 1937, p72) This illustrates the rejection Crooks receives on a
daily basis. During his conversation with Lennie and later Candy, who subsequently joins them, it is

The Impact Of Technological Development On The Growth And...
Distribution had always been costly process for the tourism industry until technology was introduced.
Technological development in the tourism industry of distribution systems consists of three main
stages from the evolution and development of airline reservation systems (ARS), computer reservation
systems such as SABRE and global distribution systems (GDS) that are now currently in place. The
roles of these distributors and stages will be assessed. The impacts of the growth and development of
distribution via the internet causes global distribution system companies to create changes in their
business models to adapt to the evolution of new technology.
Before any technological systems, airlines took the initiative to create systems to solve issues such as
informing possible passengers about whether or not they are able to book a seat. This process was
very slow and required a lot of work to be done manually, bookings were usually made through
telegrams, letters or even over the phone. The lack of direct communication between customers and
airlines caused problems with over booking seats and under booking seats for a certain flight
(Copeland, D and Mckenney, J. 1988). This made office jobs at airlines more labour intensive and
stressful. Neither efficient for the customer nor the service provider. Therefore airlines created the card
system, each airline office in each city would have a boards on the wall for particular flights which
then had slots to represent the number of

The Negative Importance Of Eugenics As A Science
Eugenics is a science that Francis Galton developed that holds an extensive amount of negative
connotations now and should continue to do so as long as life thrives on Earth. As people who want to
develop this science are usually those who believe that there are people who are born superior and that
there are people who are born inferior; that there are traits that you cannot change no matter what.
This type of belief has been backed up with Charles Darwin s theory of natural selection and with
Galton s own ideas of hard heredity, and even lead to the advancement of eugenic policies like
sterilization laws. And even though eugenics did lose credibility because of Nazis, it is still shown
nowadays, such as in prison.
There were two main biological beliefs that were taken to support eugenics natural selection and hard
heredity. Natural selection was Darwin s theory that stated that over time the weak will gradually
depreciate, leaving only the strong. However, with eugenics being discussed, people were creating
policies that would make natural selection proceed at a much faster rate. And so it got into people s
mind that if you re strong, it s alright to eradicate the weak forcefully because it was going to happen
anyway. Hard heredity, which was produced by Galton, however, was the idea that the mental, moral,
and physical qualities of a person are taken from your parents. And that even if one of your parents
take it upon themselves to improve themselves, the

Black Narrows Descriptive Writing
The Black Narrows. It is at the far south end of the city, underground in the old urban where humans
use to live before the Angles built the Sky Cities. It s only in the past fifty years that humans have
actually been living above the ground. A lot of people still live there. Mostly people who can t get jobs
or want to get away from the Order. Demons never go down there, not even Law Enforcement. It is a
dangerous place for both demons and humans alike. One stupid mistake and you d be dead or worse. It
s also the perfect place to find all the information you need on any demon. It s a creepy place with
strangely dressed people...well stranger than normal...and fatherless families wandering about.

hacker immediately begins typing away on the keyboard, his eyes flicking from one bright screen to
the next. I wait patiently as the man works away, but as seconds turn into minutes and those minutes
turn into almost an hour, I start to worry. What if this demon, Daemn isn t in the system? What if he s
just some rogue demon who just goes around stealing from humans? I quickly push those thoughts
away. Nothing was stolen when they attacked, meaning he can t be a rogue, also meaning he has to be
in the system. He looked too clean and too powerful to not be in the system. How hard is it to search
for him with all the description I had given the old man? Unless my information is wrong. Could it
be? Could my sister s murderer be from a completely different city? Could he wear a disguise when he
raids humans? Could it be that all this is for

Dichotomy Between Eastern And Western Religions
Myths are culturally accepted stories that humans have orally constructed and passed on from
generation to generation to serve our larger perception of life and humanity. Further, myths help guide
us in their teachings about creation, good and evil, mortality, and suffering. However, these myths
contrast between Eastern and Western regions. Eastern regions depart from Western regions in terms
of their religious influence. Religion in Eastern regions helps shape the importance of humans
relationship with a higher power through the embodiment of rituals and sacrifices much like in Native
American and Shinto religious beliefs. Although Eastern regions branch from these diverse cultures,
they centralize on the belief that the relationship between God and humans is universal and essential
for human life.

striving to escape from prejudice and poverty, risk a terrible displacement (Cowart, 171). Also
different sides of culture and heritage are described in the story through the characters of Dee, Maggie
and Johnson, each with divergent personalities in life. Dee is described as a young women, who came
back to her rural home after a long time period and want to become more stylish, modern. Also, she

It signifies that she refuses African American culture and want to live with a new identity. In addition,
Black arts movements influences Dee s attitude to traditional culture. These movements change her
lifestyle. She wants to be modern, stylish and fashionable. Dee s mother says At sixteen she had her
own style and I know what that was (Walker 818), her mother said this, when Dee decided to wear

The character Maggie symbolizes African American community who have a lot of knowledge about
the history of their culture and wants to be connected with their heritage through their lives. (Farrell,

My Views On Education And Policy Cycles
With years of experience Ravitch explains her changed views on education and policy cycles. Ravitch
talks about the evolution of her experience from public schooling to politics. She discusses education
and how it transformed to a testing movement. The two main focuses in American education were
accountability and choice. Educational differences began with the transition of the Clintons
administration to the Bush administration. Her career enhanced within education when she was asked
to work for the Department of Education. She joined the Bush administration to be the assistant
secretary in charge of educational research and improvement. Ravitch wanted to focus on a strong
curriculum, which included opportunities in liberal arts and sciences. Ravitch explains her passion for
the American school system and the progress she made. Her focus was to keep a well rounded
educator in each classroom. Ravitch starts by explaining the ideas of charter schools and other market
based reforms. Ravitch discusses the difference between the no child left behind act and a nation at
risk. The Clinton administration Goals 2000 program gave the states federal money for individual
academic standards. The Bush administration implemented the no child left behind act in 2002. Bush s
no child left behind program melded smoothly, with a central feature of the Clinton administration s
Goals program: namely leaving it to the states to set their own standards and pick their own tests
(Ravitch, 2011).

The US Economy
The United States is currently experiencing a slow recovery from the recession of 2008 09. The
current unemployment rate is 7.7%, which is the lowest level since December of 2008 (BLS, 2012).
However, this rate is believed to higher than the rate that would occur if the economy was operating at
peak efficiency, and it is also believed that there are structural issues still underpinning this
performance. For example, the number of Americans who have exited the work force as the result of
prolonged unemployment is believed to be higher than usual. In addition, the Congressional Budget
Office (CBO, 2012) notes that long term unemployment of greater than 26 weeks is at a much higher
rate than normal, which will have adverse long run effects on the economy, since workers with long
term unemployment often find their career paths derailed. The current rate of GDP growth, according
to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, is 2.7% (for Q3), and it was 1.3% in Q2 of this year. This rate
reflects relatively slow growth, with challenges remaining in the domestic market and with
sluggishness in Europe suppressing exports to that region. The rate of GDP growth is predicted to
slow to a decline of 0.5% between Q4 2012 and Q4 2013, the US re entering recession, according to
the Congressional Budget Office s projections. These projections are based on the provisions of the
Budget Control Act being enacted, though any observers are doubtful that this will occur. Inflation, the

The Characters Of Hawkeye And Uncas In The Last Of The...
This paper will be highlighting the characters of Hawkeye and Uncas from The Last of the Mohicans,
by James Fenimore Cooper. Showing how these two characters were changed by the war they became
a part of. Some of the growth in these men might be subtle, but there are definite changes you see by
the end of the story. In the beginning of the novel, Uncas is extremely reticent, and prefers to let his
actions speak for themselves. However, he has a strong moral compass and does not often stray from
the path that will help his companions, no matter the circumstances. Being one of the last two
Mohican Chiefs, he fights with valor against the Mingos and French, and is strongly devoted to his
father, Chingachgook and his companion Hawkeye. Uncas is an expert at hunting and tracking, and
these skills come in very handy when his love interest, Cora, and her sister Alice are taken captive by
Magua, a rival Indian who wants revenge. Uncas being enamored with Cora is one of the romantic
aspects in the novel, and one that, at the time, was quite controversial. Being that interracial marriages
were not common, and in some places was not allowed. Uncas role in early stages of their adventure
was to see to Cora and Alice. He attended their needs without complaint, and this shows the
compassionate side that until this point, was not seen in him. By the end of the novel, Uncas had a
major shift in how he was perceived and how he viewed himself. When it was revealed

Fruit and Robots: Two Operating Systems in the Mobile Market
Apple s iOS and Google s Android operating systems (OS) are both used in similar devices, tablets
and phones. However, the look and feel of both is very different. Smartphones and tablet computers
have become increasingly popular; two operating systems have come to the forefront, iOS, and
Android. Both contain similarities but the way in which they are used, and the devices they are used
on are similar but once the OS s are put on become vastly different. Many other operating systems

This can cause problems for the company because it can fragment their market share as well as
confuse the public. Not all devices run all OS versions, not all devices look the same because of the
skinning that comes from some hardware manufacturers.
One major difference between the two operating systems is the fact that Android is part of the Android
Open Source Project (AOSP) which allows developers access to the Software Development Kit (SDK)
to develop applications for Android devices, which is the most important part of the new Smartphone
market. Apple, as with most things they release have a closed system, you have to pay to become a
developer and develop with tools they proved. This puts a burden on the developers right away
because Android is extensively free, while iOS has an initial cost to even get started, and that s if you
already have an Intel based Mac.
Application development itself is different in the respect that they use different programming
languages to create the applications (apps). Android applications are usually developed using the Java
language but with tools that are available can be created using C, or C++. Apple iOS applications are
created using their own custom software and Objective C language. The approval process one
applications are developed are also much different. With an Android App is developed it can be sold

Characteristics Of The Roman Emperor Propaganda
Roman Emperor Propaganda:
The Portrait of Augustus is a very good example of propaganda from a ruling emperor. It is from
Primaporta, Italy, the year 20 BCE. The original was made from bronze but copied in marble because
bronze statues were melted down for weapons. The statue stands at 6 foot 8 inches. The figure is
interpreted as Augustus by the two curls in his bangs that make up the S and C of the Augustinian
household. He is wearing a bronze chest plate with stories of him interacting with gods. Augustus has
the gods on his side, he is an international military victor, and he is the bringer of the Pax Romana, a
peace that encompasses all the lands of the Roman Empire. In the central zone of the armor are two
figures, a Roman and a Parthian. On the left, the enemy Parthian returns military standards. This is a
direct reference to an international diplomatic victory of Augustus in 20 BCE when these standards
were finally returned to Rome. The plate would have been made of bronze which is heavier so it
would have been just for decorative uses. Augustus is said to have been a deity, being related to a god
or goddess. Down by his proper right foot is a cupid riding a dolphin. Venus, who is represented by a
dolphin, is the mother of both Cupids. The purpose of depicting both Cupid and Venus is to highlight
Augustus godly lineage. He is outreached in the typical speech pose that many Romans used in their
sculptures to show that they are in a position of power and authority.

How The Other Half Lives By Edward Bellamy
Throughout the 1890 s to the 1920 s the Progressive Era was a period of social activism and political
reform in the United States. It was also a period of explosive economic growth, fueled by increasing
industrial production, a rapid rise in population, and the continued expansion of the consumer market
place. The main objective of the progressive movement was illuminating the presence of corruption in
government (Foner, 2017). During the 1880 s there were two very influential works published during
the earliest moments of the Progressive Era. In the novel Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy, the
author pinpoints the issues that he himself perceived in the social and economic systems of nineteenth
century society. His novel presents an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Members of society in the 19th century were enlightened by an industrial system of private capital.
Compared to a feudal, agricultural society, an industrial economy based on private capital became a
far more efficient means to produce and accumulate wealth (Bellamy, 1996). It allowed the production
of cheap, mass produced goods, so it raised the standard of living. However, the wealth that was
produced as a result was placed into the hands of the privileged few. Bellamy expresses his point of
view by arguing that an economy based on publicly owned capital would strengthen the characteristics
that 19th century society members admired most about their industrial system (Bellamy, 1996). He
believed that his ideal society would be more efficient. For example, labor would never be inactive,
and supply would far more closely match demand. He argued that the frequent gluts, shortages,
strikes, and business failures under an economic system run on competition are immense wastes that
would be eliminated under a system based on communal cooperation (Bellamy, 1996).
In How the Other Half Lives , Riis wrote his novel to inform members of society of the terrible living
conditions of more than half of New York City s residents. He described the cheap construction of the
tenements, the high rents, and the absentee landlords. He protested the city s ineffectual laws and
urged private enterprise to provide

The Importance Of Co-Presence In Radio Broadcasting
Radio broadcasting has become an influence in contemporary times as it is a way of communication to
a wider audience. Through radio broadcasting, we are introduced to a variety of components, different
music genres, currents events both locally and internationally, competitions, free giveaways and live
interactions between presenters and listeners. However, it is the idea of co presence that is stimulated
through these components in which makes radio broadcasting exciting to listen to and engage with.
The realm of co presence within radio broadcast has defined how the audience is actually listening to
their preferred radio stations. In this essay will discuss and break down concepts such as intimacy,
liveness and the implied audience that define the hegemony of co presence with in radio broadcasting
as described by Hugh Chignell s in his text, Key Concepts in Radio Studies (2009). This essay will
also be focusing on how the Mai FM breakfast show, Mai Mornings (2017), deliver Chignell s
concepts in order to understand the importance of co presence. Mai FM is a hip hop and RnB station
that is broadcasted all over New Zealand, and throughout the radio station, Chignell s concepts are
highlighted. Scholarly references will also be included throughout to shape the argument.

through the idea of intimacy. In Hugh Chignell s text, the role of the concept of intimacy was

Harriet Martineau s Travel
Travel is different for everyone. There are no two people who experience the exact same thing when
they leave the comforts of their homes. For some people during Victorian times to the mid 1900 s
travelling was a way of life. Explorers such as Captain James Cook and Percy Fawcett cleared the way
for many young explorers. Women such as Harriet Martineau set an example for women everywhere;
that one does not have to get married and settle down, but can instead discover the mysteries of the
world. The travellers in discussion all came from a Western perspective. When approaching the
natives, however, each person, man or woman, had a varying reaction. Western explorers felt superior

From a religious perspective, the people of the Hawaiian islands were deplorable. Marshall Sahlins
calls Hawaiian culture Aphrodisian, and cites as evidence a nineteenth century missionary who
complained that islanders practiced twenty forms of intercourse and had as many words for coitus
(Horwitz 392). In the West, the topic of sex is extremely taboo. Public displays of affection or lustful
words are considered sinful. When Captain James Cook sailed to this area, many of his men
participated in debauchery with the exotic women. In this situation, the men had absolutely no respect
for the Islander dwellers. The culture was to their liking, therefore they borrowed it for a little while. If
there was any real respect for these people, the Western men would have tried to to accept more pieces
of it, instead of the parts that gave them pleasure. In Blue Latitudes, when the Natives took the
belongings of the crew, Cook planned to do what he had done many times before in the Pacific: seize
a chief and hold him until stolen goods were returned (Horwitz 405). Instead of trying to understand
why the men would act like this, Cook acted upon his most primal instincts to get the possessions
back. The Western travellers in many situations simply took advantage of the people they happened
upon. One prime example of this comes from Heart Of Darkness. When

hope in the latter one. Both poems have war and death as their main themes, yet differ significantly
from each other. In terms of structure, The Soldier is composed of two stanzas and it is written in
iambic pentameter. The rhyme scheme is ABAB CDCD in the first stanza, and EFG EFG in the
second stanza. The poem was written during the First World War, ... Show more content on

It consists of four stanzas which are not equal lengthwise. There is also no rhyming; the poem has free
verse. The speaker, who is also the main persona of the poem, is a soldier in the war and we deduce
this from what he describes which definitely sounds like a battlefield and when he talks about [their]
camp (5). The blind man described in line 13 and the girl in line 15 could be identified as silent
personas. The poem s historical context is the First World War, to which the poet, Isaac Rosenberg,
was sent with the English Army. His experience was probably what inspired the poem s theme. The
audience of the poem is every reader, but it could also be a person close to the speaker. Rosenberg s
personal experience of the war, could also indicate that he is the speaker and that the poem could be
considered autobiographical. Moreover, one could say that the poem looks like it could be en extract
from a diary entry, or even a creative letter to a loved one. The tone of the poem is melancholic,
sombre, serious and tense, but a little hopeful as well. Figurative language is excessively used in this
poem. There are two similes, which facilitate the comparison of the song that dropped with a blind
man s dream on the sand (13) and with a girl s dark hair (15). Metaphors are ample in the poem, for
example when they are dragging these anguished limbs (4), the poison blasted track (5), the fact that
death could drop from the dark (10) and that no ruin lies there (15). In line 3 there is personification of
the sinister threat [that] lurks there and the [m]usic showering on [their] faces (9). There could also be
an allusion to the Bible, when the speaker uses the biblical terms hark! (7) and [l]o! (8), while the
strange joy (7) described, could be considered an oxymoron. Interesting is also the wording of the
poem. The speaker uses poetic language with some archaic elements, but also invents and

Chaucer s Retraction In The Canterbury Tales Essay
Different scholars have had different understandings of Chaucer s Retraction and The Canterbury
Tales. The divergent views have drawn different interpretations of the intended meaning and the
context of its existence. Many scholars believe that The Parson s Tale was Chaucer s final work. Some
people feel Chaucer s Retraction was the final one in the collection, while others doubt that Chaucer
was the real author of the repudiation. This dilemma is implored by the fact the retraction completely
disowns the earlier versions of Chaucer s works. Those who agree that Chaucer s Retraction is the
actual work of Geoffrey Chaucer give several reasons why he disowned his work. They explain what
he sought to achieve and how the retraction relates to The Parson s Tale and the whole framework of
The Canterbury Tales.
The fact that Chaucer s main reason of retracting his tales in The Canterbury Tales is to avoid
accusations arising from writing some of the tales is no secret. The fictions rather use some words and
an approach that at the time would have sounded offensive to the pilgrimage or as a criticism of the
church. He uses the retraction to appeal to not only truth as an ideal virtue but also to the words of the
pilgrims that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While he may have felt the need to retract his works because of his religious piety, many doubt the
sincerity in his deed. The most obvious and seeming answer to the question of why he did it is that
other than fear of condemnation, he wanted to attract diverse readers of his work. The Parson s Tale
and Chaucer s Retraction help to look back on the other tales, which are rather vulgar in language and
obscene in technique. The fact that he chose to end his final touch on The Canterbury Tales on a
religious note is both suspicious and pious. However, what this does is to reiterate and reaffirm every
single idea and practice endorsed in the

Reflection Paper On Volleyball Player
This Club season, I would like to improve my knowledge of the sport, understand how to be a
supportive teammate, and develop into a better and more experienced volleyball player.
The position I enjoy the most is the outside hitter. I am fond of this position because I am not only a
skilled and talented hitter, but I am also useful in backrow. Therefore, an outside hitter is my desired
position because I believe this is where I would be the most useful to the team.
I would absolutely consider playing another position because I desire to support my team in anyway
the coaches see fit.
A position I am not willing to play is right side hitter because in a previous club season, I was placed
in that position and I did not get much playing time and I felt as though I was not benefitting my team
in any way. Also, I enjoy passing in the backrow and the position of right side hitter is only a front row
position.
My grade point average is a 98.75. My grades currently range from a 97 100%. School is a very big
aspect of my life and my goal is to continue to move forward in my studies.
On average, I study anywhere from one hour to three hours a night causing me to have plenty of free
time that could be used more productively.
I am motivated by goals and I feel it is very important to set goals for yourself in every aspect of your
life. I am also motivated by rewards and my personality causes me to want to fulfill all of the potential
possible for me.
My motivation increases when I am being supported by the people around me because then I will not
want to let them down. My parents also motivate me to do my best because they have set a very high
expectation for me, causing me to work for what I want. Yelling and fear of failure both decrease my
motivation. When I am in an environment that I feel comfortable in, my motivation will increase,
however, if I am in a space where I feel judged, I tend to not be motivated.
I have led by example when I tell the truth instead of taking the easy way out, when I take credit for
my actions and not sabotage my teammates. I also lead by example when I listen to and follow
instructions as well as when I am persistent and determined to reach a goal or support my teammates.

The Case Of Johnson Johnson
Although emergencies are unexpected by nature, the true character of a company is revealed by how
they react and handle a crisis. In 1982, seven individuals died in Chicago from taking Extra Strength
Tylenol capsules, which were laced with cyanide. Tylenol became one of Johnson Johnson s most
successful products, accounting for 17 percent of the company s profits. Extra Strength Tylenol
constituted 70 percent of all Tylenol sales (Lazare). Johnson Johnson also enjoyed an incredible
amount of trust and goodwill from the public, nurtured in part by its allegiance to the company credo
of responsibility to employees, consumers, stockholders, and the community. Johnson Johnson took
full accountability for the crisis even though they were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, the company advertised in the national media for individuals not to consume any products
that contained acetaminophen. When it was determined that only capsules were tampered with, they
offered to exchange all Tylenol capsules already purchased by the public with solid tablets (Lazare).
Johnson Johnson offered a $100,000 reward for the capture and conviction of the Tylenol Killer whom
was never found (Yang). The media commended Johnson Johnson for it s handling of the crisis; for
example, an article in The Washington Post said, Johnson Johnson has effectively demonstrated how a
major business ought to handle a disaster. The article further stated that this is no Three Mile Island
accident in which the company s response did more damage than the original incident, and praised the
company for being honest with the public (Kaplan). Johnson Johnson could have easily blamed the
stores for not protecting their product and for allowing someone to tamper with the capsules. This
could possibly have led to a lawsuit because the Johnson Johnson brand was briefly tarnished from
public outcry and scrutiny, which ultimately hurt their business and reputation; something that money
cannot restore. Like most large companies, Johnson Johnson could have dismissed the situation by
preparing a simple written statement or apology in response to the seven deaths, which would deflect
their liability in the situation. In my

Essay about Diversity Programs at the New England Aquarium
In the case of Diversity Programs at the New England Aquarium , all four frames structural, human
resources, political, and symbolic show a different perspective of the underlying management issues
surrounding the New England Aquarium. The issues that surround the structural frame are based
around the aquarium s goals and mission, as well as the actual organizational structure and
coordination. The human resource frame will be used to view the relationships and balance between
the needs of the organization and the needs of the people involved at the aquarium. Next, we will look

The next management issue, within the structural frame, lies in the structural tensions at the aquarium.
There are two design issues that are in the core of the organizational structure: differentiation, and
integration (Bolman p49). The first issue with differentiation comes up with the interns in the
organization. There was a time where the interns where not making well use of time, and it wasn t till
the intern s responsibilities were restructured that the interns were able to make use of the time, and
make the most out of their positions. The next group that had difficulties was the finding proper and
suitable work for the incoming diversity program students. This was, in part, due to the fact that there
was no planning or specific program created for the unskilled students. However, the next year there
was a quick growth in the number of students in the program making their tasks more difficult to
specialize. Specialization of the student s jobs was one of the initiatives that Williams planned for the
new incoming students. These included creating specific jobs with goals such as education assistants
and Teen Ambassadors.
Another management issue that was apparent in the organization was the coordination of the aquarium
s structure. The aquarium was a classic laterally coordinated organization, and there were issues that
arose when the students came into an

Violence And Violence Among Children
Introduction While the rate of crime in the United States has decreased overall an increase in senseless
violence being committed by young people leaves individuals trying to understand what is to blame. It
is encouraging that the rate of crimes of violence in the United States has dropped about 15 percent
since 1999. However, self reported violent offending by American youth has not declined. (Funk et al.
1) Work place violence, road rage disputes and mass school shootings are just a few examples of
violence that has become common place in society. Adolescent perpetrating violent crimes has been
on the rise as is evident with the number of shootings and physical altercations in recent years. Many
have tried to identify what is causing this increase in violence among children. The growing problem
of violence and aggressive behavior in society is speculated to be credited in part to the rise of violent
video games.

but what happens when this role is confused with a very spiritual role? Where will a young girl turn to

Jeanette has lived a sheltered life with no influence on her except for the church. Her mother is a strict

Elsie not only understood
the word of the Lord and came from within the society Jeanette grew up in, she had a sense of the

Jeanette a feeling of fellowship, a deep friendship that was based on true feelings, not the Lord.
In one part of the book Elsie helps Jeanette with the transition of home schooling, which was based on

into a public school setting, even if it did shock and raise eyebrows. The older woman gave Jeanette a

She likes the reaction Jeanette is getting from her religious art works and other biblical oddities that
seem out of place in public school. Elsie is still seen as a fellow follower, a follower of Jeanette?s

life and are always there to love and support. However, anyone who has spent time with friends will
notice that each one has a special personality with respect to their honesty, loyalty, and care. Basically,
friend types can be fallen into four groups; acquaintances, school or activity friends, and best friends.
The first type of friend is an acquaintance. A acquaintance is someone you know, but you only have a
minor level of relationship with. You probably do not have any intimacy with them aside from sharing
some very shallow sorts of facts about your life. That is, you only know their name. Sometimes you

Summary Of The Virgin Of Guadalupe
The Virgin of Guadalupe represented a melding of indigenous and Western cultures, a woman who
was both a symbol of Catholicism, but appeared to an indigenous man and spoke in Nahuatl. The
Virgin stemmed from syncretism of Catholicism with indigenous religions after Catholics realized that
they needed to accept indigenous idols and beliefs if they wanted to spread their religion in Columbian
era Mexico. However, over time, the Virgin of Guadalupe has come to represent not only religion but
something inherently Mexican due her origins are non polarizing, her being associated with both
indigenous and Western culture. Ideologically, she also came to represent the idea of purity when
contrasted with La Malinche, who Mexicans view as a representation of betrayal. The Virgin s place in
the virgin/whore dichotomy is what cements her place in history not only as a religious symbol but
also as a symbol for all of Mexico, something which represents purity and one s pride in Mexico itself.
Mexican Mosaic, quoting Carlos Fuentes, describes this ironic view of the Virgin s place in a country
with the state sponsored religion as how one may no longer consider himself a Christian, but one
cannot truly be considered a Mexican unless one believes in the Virgin of Guadalupe (Buchenau 23).
The Virgin represents an inherent purity that all Mexicans strive to achieve. Although she is
intrinsically Catholic, she appears to be associated more with the history and culture of Mexico itself.

Possible Solutions to the Foreclosure Crisis Essay

jobs on the horizon and fluctuating adjustable mortgage rates, the foreclosure crisis continues to
plague America. A recent report from the Mortgage Bankers Association reveals that 14% of loans are
behind or in foreclosure. This is largely due to lost jobs in this volatile economy. Many factors are

A few other problems that have arisen as a result of the crisis include lost revenue for cities, increased
crime and, of course, more properties that are vacant. Many places are also reporting a large increase
in homelessness. One group alone is not going to solve the crisis, nor is one solution by itself. There
has to be a combined effort of three major groups and a set of several solutions deployed at once to
gain ground and overtake the crisis. We will discuss this in the next section.
The Solution Currently, we are seeing some waffling going on concerning this issue in Washington
D.C. along with some lending institutions that will not work with homeowners. This is where the start
of the solution lies. The government, by means of a qualified representative, a large banking
conglomerate overseeing lending institutions and a small group of geographically diverse homeowners
in foreclosure will need to come together to form a coalition. This coalition s sole purpose will be to
work together, with a common goal, to solve this crisis. This group, along with government imposed
rules upon lenders based on solutions, will have the authority to set in motion a plan that will move
toward solving the crisis. We will now look at some solutions, which if employed in conjunction with
each other, will satisfy accounting procedures, keep homeowners

The Experimental Side Of Documentary Practice
Introduction
This project aims to further develop the experimental side of documentary practice, with special focus
on ethnography. It will take the form of an experimental documentary juxtaposing enactments of the
past with depictions of the present, through a case study focusing on North Eastern Romanian villages,
engaging villagers into re enactments of traditional life from the past as method of documenting their
self reflection on the transition to the present.
The setting of the re enactments is based on the Romanian ballad The Little Ewe and more specifically
on the journey described in the Mihail Sadoveanu novel inspired by it, The Hatchet (1930). These two
texts are widely known in Romania having become compulsory reading material in schools as one of
the four fundamental myths of Romanians and a monographic representation of the Romanian village
and its customs respectively. The main themes of the two stories are transhumance and death, both
highlighting the traditions and the way of life of shepherding communities. Furthering the reasons for
this choice, these texts have become engrained into the collective consciousness of Romanian people
as to become an unconscious memory.
Its relevance within ethnographic practice is given by the documentation of the transition process from
traditional to modernity within the Romanian village, as well as its universal exploration of humans
facing change and their ways to adapt to it.
I will interrogate documentary practices

Females are less violent than males, at least according to...
Females are less violent than males, at least according to recent research. Biologically speaking, there
are differences in levels of violence in men and women (Wright, Tibbett, Daigle, 2008). With eighty
five percent of arrestees being male, it s easy to see that males commit many more violent crimes than
females. These differences are credited to brain configuration, neurotransmitters, the limbic system,

There are different intellectual styles between males and females. These differences can be traced to

A Positron Emission Tomography study was conducted in order to compare the differing levels of
activity of the amygdala in females and males. The study showed that males typically have higher
levels of activity. The amygdala regulates emotions and is located in the lower part of the limbic
system (Beaver, 2009).
The cingulate gyrus is the part of the limbic system that is responsible for keeping emotions and
aggression under control (Wright et al., 2008). Research on the differences in this area between males
and females concluded that females are better retaining emotions internally and are better at
displaying emotional behavior than males. Females have higher levels of serotonin. Serotonin is a
neurotransmitter that helps regulate impulses and control behavior. Low levels of serotonin are
associated with antisocial behavior (Beaver, 2009). Likewise, females also usually have a higher level
of amino butyric than males. This is a neurotransmitter that regulates violence and aggression (Wright

great deal of explanation for the different levels of aggression, violence and criminal behavior found
between the sexes.

had many defeats from a country which were considered to be inferior. The defeat of this war
humiliated the people of Russia and therefore lost confidence in Nicholas II. Russia s defeat in the war
also caused problems in the Military, economic and political problems. This then means that the Russo
Japanese war was partly responsible for the 1905 revolution.

If the Russian people were to turn away, they would have to look somewhere else. Many looked
towards political groups who were prepared to take action. The political implications of the Russo
Japanese war was a major cause of the 1905 Revolution as support left the Tsar and went to political
groups which many believed could take his place.
However, many people believe that the Russo Japanese was not the only cause for the outbreak of the
1905 revolution. During this period, there were many growing political groups which many believed
would be better than the Tsar because of their more radical thinking. The Russians mainly supported
the Populists the Social Revolutionaries, the Social Democrats and the Liberals. Throughout the years
the groups were slowly providing more opposition to the Tsar and each other. The most radical, and in
some ways successful, group was the Social Revolutionaries (SR). The SR was heavily against the
Tsar and his regimes. They opposed by assassinating many members of the government including the
Minister of the Interior, Plehve in 1904 and Sergei. The SR became hugely popular due to their
radicalism and the fact they are getting closer to their goal than many other political groups which lead
to the public supporting them as opposed to the Tsar causing the 1905 revolution.
Another big reason why the 1905 revolution was cause was Russia s lack of Political reform

An organization s accreditation cycle is continuous, as long as the organization has a full,
unannounced survey within 39 months of its last survey, and continues to meet all accreditation
related requirements, including, but not limited to, submission of an annual periodic performance
review, and an annual subscription payment. The PPR is an additional requirement of the accreditation
process in which an organization reviews its compliance with all applicable Joint Commission

Water Dissolving Lab
While looking at the results, I noticed that the cold temperature solution glowed for the longest time
with an average of 14.5 minutes. The room temperature solution was next with an average of 13.5
minutes. Finally, the warm temperature glowed for the shortest amount of time with an average of 9.5
minutes. I noticed that the solubility affected the glow rate. The warm water was able to quickly
dissolve the copper sulfate, Luminol, and Perborate mixture. However, the cold water took the longest
because it was hard for it to dissolve. In order to keep the dissolving process going, every so often, I
mixed it. My results indicate that if you want to locate the presence of blood quickly, you should use a
warmer solution. However, if you want a longer glow, a colder solution may be a better choice. A t test
was not used because there were only two trials. Therefore, it would be hard to compare and call it
significant or not significant. My hypothesis was correct, because I predicted that the colder solution
would take the longest. I think the results came out the way they did because the crystals had a harder
time dissolving in the cold water, than in the hot water. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the Lux meter was not sensitive enough to pick up the light emitted from the Luminol.
When I realized this, I had to rethink my project. I was going to record my observations, and make a
table based on how bright I thought it was. However, the problem I realized with this was that my data
would be opinionated. Therefore, it would be hard to justify. After, I realized that I could time how
long the glow lasts for. By doing this, I would have true numbers to record. Overall, I think that by
problem solving, I was able to figure out a way to make my project

Easter Island Chapter 1 Summary
In 400 AD to 900 AD, the Polynesians decided to migrate to a little island south of the pacific ocean to
start their civilisation. Since they are surrounded by water, that meant that the Polynesians had only a
few limited resource until they can find a way to start their civilisationsomewhere else. Within time,
the Polynesians started using their resources in a rapid amount of time, which can soon lead to
deforestation, loss of food production, limited to slim amount of resources, etc. Tragedy of the

Tragedy of the commons or even the Easter Island situation can happen to our environment. As stated
in chapter one, we need a clean ecosystem in order to try to maintain life. We must need clean air,
clean water, and healthy soil with plenty of nutrients so our food production can keep increasing, but
once you take advantage of the environment like dump waste in our rivers to the point that it causes
water pollution, or burning out all our fossil fuels or gasoline to the point that we have smog, or air
pollution, our ecosystem will eventually die out. Also stated in chapter one, soil degradation, crop
diseases, or even weather conditions can decrease our food production. If our human population and
animal reproduction keeps increasing rapidly, there would be a limited amount of space. For example,
Los Angeles, California is avery populated city that everything is so crowded and we have ridiculous
amount of traffic jams every single day. The amount of automobiles there are in the atmosphere
contribute to the air pollution which later on causes smog to occur. Factories are also another reason

Ayn Rand Anthem Analysis
Was Equality 7 2521 committing a sin? Ayn Rand shows her opinions of religion when she wrote
Anthem. She believed that religion is what enslaved the people. It is full of many philosophical
questions. The first of which is at the very beginning of the book. The book starts off by saying It is a
sin to write this. (page 17) At that point in time, Equality 7 2521 believes that it is a sin; however, by
the end he has a different opinion. In order to be able to say if his assessment of his sin was correct,
you have to ask yourself what is sin? In our society a sin is commonly associated with religion. How
can you have a sin if you have no religion? You can t. Although Equality 7 2521 s society has no
discernible religion, they do worship something. The society worships unity. They are taught at a
young age that an individual is nothing, and that the only reason they are here is by the graces of their
brothers. The book says they recited, We are nothing. Mankind is all. By the grace of our brothers we
are allowed our lives. We exist through, by and for our brothers who are the State. Amen. (page 21)
This sounds alot like a prayer that we would teach our children in a sunday school class. They even
end it in Amen. Therefore, if unity is their religion, then when he was all alone in the cave ... Show

transgression; and why I had never felt guilt in my sins. (page 98) He thinks now that not only was his
sinning okay, but it was the best part of him. It gave him his individuality . Equality 7 2521 religiously
believed that being alone was a bad thing, even to the point that when he was alone he he believed he
was sinning. By the end of the book, however he has lost his religion so to speak. He no longer
believed that he was sinning; because he no longer worships

  • 2. Feast Of Tabernacles Research Paper The Feast of Tabernacles was the third feast the Jews celebrated and it also was one of the pilgrimages they made. The other two feast celebrated are they Passover and the Pentecost. During these times the people were required to travel to the Temple. Each of the feasts that went on was celebrated annually. The Feast of Tabernacles was celebrated in the seventh month, which corresponds with our month of October, on the fifteenth day and it would last for eight days. The Feast of Tabernacles began when the harvest was finished which would be five days after the Day of Atonement. The Feast of Tabernacles can also be known as the Feast of Booths. The Feast of Tabernacles was sometimes called the Feast of Ingathering because of it marking the end of the harvest, which made it a time of rejoicing. The Feast of Tables came from the Hebrew word Sukkot. The purpose of the feast was a time to remember the 40 years spent in the wilderness, the journey and deliverance from slavery to the promised land, and to remind people that we are only pilgrims on the earth. The feast served also as a time to remember God s direction in the wilderness wanderings. Finally, it served as a time to remember the protection God gave the ... • 3. Write About the Ways in Which Steinbeck Presents Either... Write about the ways in which Steinbeck presents either Crooks or Curley s wife. To what extent does he create sympathy for either of these characters? Of Mice and Men is set in 1930 s America in the middle of the economic depression. It is geared towards the pursuit of the American dream, promoting the ideas of equality, life, liberty and happiness. Steinbeck uses Crooks, and to some extent Curley s wife to challenge the perception of equality and sometimes the language used is, by modern standards, racist and misogynistic. There is an irony in the fact that the people judging Crooks are less intelligent than he is and they refuse to look at anything other than the stereotype of his ethnicity. Steinbeck reveals as much about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Lennie first enters, Crooks is at first defensive as he is not used to visitors invading his personal space. He then realises he can have some fun with Lennie, who is nowhere near his intellectual equal and Crooks reveals a slightly sadistic streak. He metaphorically, dances all over the slow witted Lennie and is far too quick for him. While he is trying to make the point that although Lennie has George, he is all alone, he enjoys tormenting Lennie Crooks face lighted with pleasure in his torture. (Steinbeck, 1937, p75). Perhaps this was one of the few opportunities he had to sharpen his mind, and he seized it. However, he was quick enough to realise the danger when Lennie was upset and backed down immediately. This was undoubtedly self preservation, as Lennie was a big man whom had recently mangled Curley s hand, but he may have realised he had gone too far and wanted to rectify the situation. Steinbeck uses Crooks conversation with Lennie as a means for Crooks to vocalise his position. Lennie asks why he is not welcome in the bunk room and Crooks is aware of the fact he has to spell it out for Lennie (and the reader) and replies Cause I m black. They play cards in there, but I can t play because I m black. (Steinbeck, 1937, p72) This illustrates the rejection Crooks receives on a daily basis. During his conversation with Lennie and later Candy, who subsequently joins them, it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Impact Of Technological Development On The Growth And... Distribution had always been costly process for the tourism industry until technology was introduced. Technological development in the tourism industry of distribution systems consists of three main stages from the evolution and development of airline reservation systems (ARS), computer reservation systems such as SABRE and global distribution systems (GDS) that are now currently in place. The roles of these distributors and stages will be assessed. The impacts of the growth and development of distribution via the internet causes global distribution system companies to create changes in their business models to adapt to the evolution of new technology. Before any technological systems, airlines took the initiative to create systems to solve issues such as informing possible passengers about whether or not they are able to book a seat. This process was very slow and required a lot of work to be done manually, bookings were usually made through telegrams, letters or even over the phone. The lack of direct communication between customers and airlines caused problems with over booking seats and under booking seats for a certain flight (Copeland, D and Mckenney, J. 1988). This made office jobs at airlines more labour intensive and stressful. Neither efficient for the customer nor the service provider. Therefore airlines created the card system, each airline office in each city would have a boards on the wall for particular flights which then had slots to represent the number of ... • 5. The Negative Importance Of Eugenics As A Science Eugenics is a science that Francis Galton developed that holds an extensive amount of negative connotations now and should continue to do so as long as life thrives on Earth. As people who want to develop this science are usually those who believe that there are people who are born superior and that there are people who are born inferior; that there are traits that you cannot change no matter what. This type of belief has been backed up with Charles Darwin s theory of natural selection and with Galton s own ideas of hard heredity, and even lead to the advancement of eugenic policies like sterilization laws. And even though eugenics did lose credibility because of Nazis, it is still shown nowadays, such as in prison. There were two main biological beliefs that were taken to support eugenics natural selection and hard heredity. Natural selection was Darwin s theory that stated that over time the weak will gradually depreciate, leaving only the strong. However, with eugenics being discussed, people were creating policies that would make natural selection proceed at a much faster rate. And so it got into people s mind that if you re strong, it s alright to eradicate the weak forcefully because it was going to happen anyway. Hard heredity, which was produced by Galton, however, was the idea that the mental, moral, and physical qualities of a person are taken from your parents. And that even if one of your parents take it upon themselves to improve themselves, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The old hacker immediately begins typing away on the keyboard, his eyes flicking from one bright screen to the next. I wait patiently as the man works away, but as seconds turn into minutes and those minutes turn into almost an hour, I start to worry. What if this demon, Daemn isn t in the system? What if he s just some rogue demon who just goes around stealing from humans? I quickly push those thoughts away. • 7. Dichotomy Between Eastern And Western Religions Myths are culturally accepted stories that humans have orally constructed and passed on from generation to generation to serve our larger perception of life and humanity. Further, myths help guide us in their teachings about creation, good and evil, mortality, and suffering. However, these myths contrast between Eastern and Western regions. Eastern regions depart from Western regions in terms of their religious influence. Religion in Eastern regions helps shape the importance of humans relationship with a higher power through the embodiment of rituals and sacrifices much like in Native American and Shinto religious beliefs. • 11. My Views On Education And Policy Cycles With years of experience Ravitch explains her changed views on education and policy cycles. Ravitch talks about the evolution of her experience from public schooling to politics. She discusses education and how it transformed to a testing movement. The two main focuses in American education were accountability and choice. Educational differences began with the transition of the Clintons administration to the Bush administration. Her career enhanced within education when she was asked to work for the Department of Education. She joined the Bush administration to be the assistant secretary in charge of educational research and improvement. Ravitch wanted to focus on a strong curriculum, which included opportunities in liberal arts and sciences. Ravitch explains her passion for the American school system and the progress she made. Her focus was to keep a well rounded educator in each classroom. Ravitch starts by explaining the ideas of charter schools and other market based reforms. • 12. The US Economy The United States is currently experiencing a slow recovery from the recession of 2008 09. The current unemployment rate is 7.7%, which is the lowest level since December of 2008 (BLS, 2012). However, this rate is believed to higher than the rate that would occur if the economy was operating at peak efficiency, and it is also believed that there are structural issues still underpinning this performance. For example, the number of Americans who have exited the work force as the result of prolonged unemployment is believed to be higher than usual. In addition, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO, 2012) notes that long term unemployment of greater than 26 weeks is at a much higher rate than normal, which will have adverse long run effects on the economy, since workers with long term unemployment often find their career paths derailed. The current rate of GDP growth, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, is 2.7% (for Q3), and it was 1.3% in Q2 of this year. This rate reflects relatively slow growth, with challenges remaining in the domestic market and with sluggishness in Europe suppressing exports to that region. The rate of GDP growth is predicted to slow to a decline of 0.5% between Q4 2012 and Q4 2013, the US re entering recession, according to the Congressional Budget Office s projections. These projections are based on the provisions of the Budget Control Act being enacted, though any observers are doubtful that this will occur. Inflation, the third major ... • 13. The Characters Of Hawkeye And Uncas In The Last Of The... This paper will be highlighting the characters of Hawkeye and Uncas from The Last of the Mohicans, by James Fenimore Cooper. Showing how these two characters were changed by the war they became a part of. Some of the growth in these men might be subtle, but there are definite changes you see by the end of the story. In the beginning of the novel, Uncas is extremely reticent, and prefers to let his actions speak for themselves. However, he has a strong moral compass and does not often stray from the path that will help his companions, no matter the circumstances. Being one of the last two Mohican Chiefs, he fights with valor against the Mingos and French, and is strongly devoted to his father, Chingachgook and his companion Hawkeye. Uncas is an expert at hunting and tracking, and these skills come in very handy when his love interest, Cora, and her sister Alice are taken captive by Magua, a rival Indian who wants revenge. Uncas being enamored with Cora is one of the romantic aspects in the novel, and one that, at the time, was quite controversial. Being that interracial marriages were not common, and in some places was not allowed. Uncas role in early stages of their adventure was to see to Cora and Alice. He attended their needs without complaint, and this shows the compassionate side that until this point, was not seen in him. By the end of the novel, Uncas had a major shift in how he was perceived and how he viewed himself. When it was revealed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This can cause problems for the company because it can fragment their market share as well as confuse the public. Apple, as with most things they release have a closed system, you have to pay to become a developer and develop with tools they proved. This puts a burden on the developers right away because Android is extensively free, while iOS has an initial cost to even get started, and that s if you already have an Intel based Mac. Application development itself is different in the respect that they use different programming languages to create the applications (apps). Android applications are usually developed using the Java language but with tools that are available can be created using C, or C++. Apple iOS applications are created using their own custom software and Objective C language. The approval process one applications are developed are also much different. • 17. Characteristics Of The Roman Emperor Propaganda Roman Emperor Propaganda: The Portrait of Augustus is a very good example of propaganda from a ruling emperor. It is from Primaporta, Italy, the year 20 BCE. The original was made from bronze but copied in marble because bronze statues were melted down for weapons. The statue stands at 6 foot 8 inches. The figure is interpreted as Augustus by the two curls in his bangs that make up the S and C of the Augustinian household. He is wearing a bronze chest plate with stories of him interacting with gods. Augustus has the gods on his side, he is an international military victor, and he is the bringer of the Pax Romana, a peace that encompasses all the lands of the Roman Empire. In the central zone of the armor are two figures, a Roman and a Parthian. On the left, the enemy Parthian returns military standards. This is a direct reference to an international diplomatic victory of Augustus in 20 BCE when these standards were finally returned to Rome. The plate would have been made of bronze which is heavier so it would have been just for decorative uses. Augustus is said to have been a deity, being related to a god or goddess. Down by his proper right foot is a cupid riding a dolphin. Venus, who is represented by a dolphin, is the mother of both Cupids. The purpose of depicting both Cupid and Venus is to highlight Augustus godly lineage. He is outreached in the typical speech pose that many Romans used in their sculptures to show that they are in a position of power and authority. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. How The Other Half Lives By Edward Bellamy Throughout the 1890 s to the 1920 s the Progressive Era was a period of social activism and political reform in the United States. It was also a period of explosive economic growth, fueled by increasing industrial production, a rapid rise in population, and the continued expansion of the consumer market place. The main objective of the progressive movement was illuminating the presence of corruption in government (Foner, 2017). During the 1880 s there were two very influential works published during the earliest moments of the Progressive Era. In the novel Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy, the author pinpoints the issues that he himself perceived in the social and economic systems of nineteenth century society. His novel presents an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Members of society in the 19th century were enlightened by an industrial system of private capital. Compared to a feudal, agricultural society, an industrial economy based on private capital became a far more efficient means to produce and accumulate wealth (Bellamy, 1996). It allowed the production of cheap, mass produced goods, so it raised the standard of living. However, the wealth that was produced as a result was placed into the hands of the privileged few. Bellamy expresses his point of view by arguing that an economy based on publicly owned capital would strengthen the characteristics that 19th century society members admired most about their industrial system (Bellamy, 1996). He believed that his ideal society would be more efficient. For example, labor would never be inactive, and supply would far more closely match demand. He argued that the frequent gluts, shortages, strikes, and business failures under an economic system run on competition are immense wastes that would be eliminated under a system based on communal cooperation (Bellamy, 1996). In How the Other Half Lives , Riis wrote his novel to inform members of society of the terrible living conditions of more than half of New York City s residents. He described the cheap construction of the tenements, the high rents, and the absentee landlords. He protested the city s ineffectual laws and urged private enterprise to provide ... • 19. The Importance Of Co-Presence In Radio Broadcasting Radio broadcasting has become an influence in contemporary times as it is a way of communication to a wider audience. Through radio broadcasting, we are introduced to a variety of components, different music genres, currents events both locally and internationally, competitions, free giveaways and live interactions between presenters and listeners. However, it is the idea of co presence that is stimulated through these components in which makes radio broadcasting exciting to listen to and engage with. The realm of co presence within radio broadcast has defined how the audience is actually listening to their preferred radio stations. In this essay will discuss and break down concepts such as intimacy, liveness and the implied audience that define the hegemony of co presence with in radio broadcasting as described by Hugh Chignell s in his text, Key Concepts in Radio Studies (2009). For some people during Victorian times to the mid 1900 s travelling was a way of life. Explorers such as Captain James Cook and Percy Fawcett cleared the way for many young explorers. Women such as Harriet Martineau set an example for women everywhere; that one does not have to get married and settle down, but can instead discover the mysteries of the world. The travellers in discussion all came from a Western perspective. When approaching the natives, however, each person, man or woman, had a varying reaction. From a religious perspective, the people of the Hawaiian islands were deplorable. Marshall Sahlins calls Hawaiian culture Aphrodisian, and cites as evidence a nineteenth century missionary who complained that islanders practiced twenty forms of intercourse and had as many words for coitus (Horwitz 392). In the West, the topic of sex is extremely taboo. Public displays of affection or lustful words are considered sinful. When Captain James Cook sailed to this area, many of his men participated in debauchery with the exotic women. In this situation, the men had absolutely no respect for the Islander dwellers. The culture was to their liking, therefore they borrowed it for a little while. If there was any real respect for these people, the Western men would have tried to to accept more pieces of it, instead of the parts that gave them pleasure. In Blue Latitudes, when the Natives took the belongings of the crew, Cook planned to do what he had done many times before in the Pacific: seize a chief and hold him until stolen goods were returned (Horwitz 405). Instead of trying to understand why the men would act like this, Cook acted upon his most primal instincts to get the possessions back. The Western travellers in many situations simply took advantage of the people they happened upon. One prime example of this comes from Heart Of Darkness. When ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Irene Tsakiri Despoina Kalaitzidou Workshop in Critical Writing: Poetry 10 May 2016 Discussing and Comparing Poems About War This essay discusses the poems The Soldier by Rupert Brooke and Returning, We Hear the Larks by Isaac Rosenberg. What I wish to argue is that the speaker tries to evoke feelings of patriotism in the first poem, and simultaneous but contrasting feelings of horror and hope in the latter one. Both poems have war and death as their main themes, yet differ significantly from each other. In terms of structure, The Soldier is composed of two stanzas and it is written in iambic pentameter. The rhyme scheme is ABAB CDCD in the first stanza, and EFG EFG in the second stanza. The poem was written during the First World War, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It consists of four stanzas which are not equal lengthwise. There is also no rhyming; the poem has free verse. The speaker, who is also the main persona of the poem, is a soldier in the war and we deduce this from what he describes which definitely sounds like a battlefield and when he talks about [their] camp (5). The blind man described in line 13 and the girl in line 15 could be identified as silent personas. The poem s historical context is the First World War, to which the poet, Isaac Rosenberg, was sent with the English Army. His experience was probably what inspired the poem s theme. The audience of the poem is every reader, but it could also be a person close to the speaker. Rosenberg s personal experience of the war, could also indicate that he is the speaker and that the poem could be considered autobiographical. Moreover, one could say that the poem looks like it could be en extract from a diary entry, or even a creative letter to a loved one. The tone of the poem is melancholic, sombre, serious and tense, but a little hopeful as well. Figurative language is excessively used in this poem. There are two similes, which facilitate the comparison of the song that dropped with a blind man s dream on the sand (13) and with a girl s dark hair (15). Metaphors are ample in the poem, for example when they are dragging these anguished limbs (4), the poison blasted track (5), the fact that death could drop from the dark (10) and that no ruin lies there (15). In line 3 there is personification of the sinister threat [that] lurks there and the [m]usic showering on [their] faces (9). There could also be an allusion to the Bible, when the speaker uses the biblical terms hark! (7) and [l]o! (8), while the strange joy (7) described, could be considered an oxymoron. Interesting is also the wording of the poem. The speaker uses poetic language with some archaic elements, but also invents and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. Chaucer s Retraction In The Canterbury Tales Essay Different scholars have had different understandings of Chaucer s Retraction and The Canterbury Tales. The divergent views have drawn different interpretations of the intended meaning and the context of its existence. Many scholars believe that The Parson s Tale was Chaucer s final work. Some people feel Chaucer s Retraction was the final one in the collection, while others doubt that Chaucer was the real author of the repudiation. This dilemma is implored by the fact the retraction completely disowns the earlier versions of Chaucer s works. Those who agree that Chaucer s Retraction is the actual work of Geoffrey Chaucer give several reasons why he disowned his work. They explain what he sought to achieve and how the retraction relates to The Parson s Tale and the whole framework of The Canterbury Tales. The fact that Chaucer s main reason of retracting his tales in The Canterbury Tales is to avoid accusations arising from writing some of the tales is no secret. The fictions rather use some words and an approach that at the time would have sounded offensive to the pilgrimage or as a criticism of the church. Reflection Paper On Volleyball Player This Club season, I would like to improve my knowledge of the sport, understand how to be a supportive teammate, and develop into a better and more experienced volleyball player. The position I enjoy the most is the outside hitter. I am fond of this position because I am not only a skilled and talented hitter, but I am also useful in backrow. Therefore, an outside hitter is my desired position because I believe this is where I would be the most useful to the team. I would absolutely consider playing another position because I desire to support my team in anyway the coaches see fit. A position I am not willing to play is right side hitter because in a previous club season, I was placed in that position and I did not get much playing time and I felt as though I was not benefitting my team in any way. Also, I enjoy passing in the backrow and the position of right side hitter is only a front row position. My grade point average is a 98.75. My grades currently range from a 97 100%. School is a very big aspect of my life and my goal is to continue to move forward in my studies. On average, I study anywhere from one hour to three hours a night causing me to have plenty of free time that could be used more productively. I am motivated by goals and I feel it is very important to set goals for yourself in every aspect of your life. I am also motivated by rewards and my personality causes me to want to fulfill all of the potential possible for me. My motivation increases when I am being supported by the people around me because then I will not want to let them down. My parents also motivate me to do my best because they have set a very high expectation for me, causing me to work for what I want. Yelling and fear of failure both decrease my motivation. When I am in an environment that I feel comfortable in, my motivation will increase, however, if I am in a space where I feel judged, I tend to not be motivated. I have led by example when I tell the truth instead of taking the easy way out, when I take credit for my actions and not sabotage my teammates. This could possibly have led to a lawsuit because the Johnson Johnson brand was briefly tarnished from public outcry and scrutiny, which ultimately hurt their business and reputation; something that money cannot restore. • 34. Summary Of The Virgin Of Guadalupe The Virgin of Guadalupe represented a melding of indigenous and Western cultures, a woman who was both a symbol of Catholicism, but appeared to an indigenous man and spoke in Nahuatl. The Virgin stemmed from syncretism of Catholicism with indigenous religions after Catholics realized that they needed to accept indigenous idols and beliefs if they wanted to spread their religion in Columbian era Mexico. However, over time, the Virgin of Guadalupe has come to represent not only religion but something inherently Mexican due her origins are non polarizing, her being associated with both indigenous and Western culture. Ideologically, she also came to represent the idea of purity when contrasted with La Malinche, who Mexicans view as a representation of betrayal. The Virgin s place in the virgin/whore dichotomy is what cements her place in history not only as a religious symbol but also as a symbol for all of Mexico, something which represents purity and one s pride in Mexico itself. Mexican Mosaic, quoting Carlos Fuentes, describes this ironic view of the Virgin s place in a country with the state sponsored religion as how one may no longer consider himself a Christian, but one cannot truly be considered a Mexican unless one believes in the Virgin of Guadalupe (Buchenau 23). The Virgin represents an inherent purity that all Mexicans strive to achieve. It will take the form of an experimental documentary juxtaposing enactments of the past with depictions of the present, through a case study focusing on North Eastern Romanian villages, engaging villagers into re enactments of traditional life from the past as method of documenting their self reflection on the transition to the present. The setting of the re enactments is based on the Romanian ballad The Little Ewe and more specifically on the journey described in the Mihail Sadoveanu novel inspired by it, The Hatchet (1930). These two texts are widely known in Romania having become compulsory reading material in schools as one of the four fundamental myths of Romanians and a monographic representation of the Romanian village and its customs respectively. The main themes of the two stories are transhumance and death, both highlighting the traditions and the way of life of shepherding communities. Furthering the reasons for this choice, these texts have become engrained into the collective consciousness of Romanian people as to become an unconscious memory. With eighty five percent of arrestees being male, it s easy to see that males commit many more violent crimes than females. These differences are credited to brain configuration, neurotransmitters, the limbic system, and hormones. There are different intellectual styles between males and females. A Positron Emission Tomography study was conducted in order to compare the differing levels of activity of the amygdala in females and males. The study showed that males typically have higher levels of activity. The amygdala regulates emotions and is located in the lower part of the limbic system (Beaver, 2009). The cingulate gyrus is the part of the limbic system that is responsible for keeping emotions and aggression under control (Wright et al., 2008). Research on the differences in this area between males and females concluded that females are better retaining emotions internally and are better at displaying emotional behavior than males. Females have higher levels of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate impulses and control behavior. Low levels of serotonin are associated with antisocial behavior (Beaver, 2009). Likewise, females also usually have a higher level of amino butyric than males. This is a neurotransmitter that regulates violence and aggression (Wright et al., 2009). The different levels of certain neurotransmitters found in males and females provide a great deal of explanation for the different levels of aggression, violence and criminal behavior found between the sexes. The Russians mainly supported the Populists the Social Revolutionaries, the Social Democrats and the Liberals. The room temperature solution was next with an average of 13.5 minutes. Finally, the warm temperature glowed for the shortest amount of time with an average of 9.5 minutes. I noticed that the solubility affected the glow rate. The warm water was able to quickly dissolve the copper sulfate, Luminol, and Perborate mixture. However, the cold water took the longest because it was hard for it to dissolve. In order to keep the dissolving process going, every so often, I mixed it. My results indicate that if you want to locate the presence of blood quickly, you should use a warmer solution. However, if you want a longer glow, a colder solution may be a better choice. A t test was not used because there were only two trials. Therefore, it would be hard to compare and call it significant or not significant.
