For my summer reading assignment I chose to read The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. I chose this book for two reasons, one was due to the

I think I am, but how do I know?" At first glance this line may look like it's not too important but the more you think about the book the more they
suit it. This book is about a teenage boy who keeps doing things that you think he's going to go through with but he doesn't. For example, at the end
of the book it appears that he's finally leaving however, he agrees to stay when his little sister insist on going along with him. Now, the most
beautifully written line in the book is "Certain things they should stay the way they are. You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big
glass cases and just leave them alone." I didn't have many choices to pick for a most beautiful line written because all that is written is about how

1. The main conflict in the novel is 'man vs. society.' Randy was constantly put against the highwaymen. Randy really wanted and was trying to create
peace and order in Fort Repose post nuclear attacks while the highwaymen was using violence to get everything they needed.
2. There are 2 subplots in this novel. The first one is when they flash to Mark saying goodbye to each other at the Omaha airport. The other subplot is
when the story goes to the Mediterranean. In this an American pilot attempts to fire at an enemy plane but blows up a harbor in Syria on accident.
3. The main character in the novel is Randy Bragg. The main character in each subplot is the Bragg family and the American pilot.
4.Through direct characterization we see Randy become heroic and strong, mentally and physically. Through indirect characterization, we see Randy
become very sympathetic and caring. For example, we see Randy care more for others than himself.
5.This book takes place in Fort Repose, Florida. The story takes place post World Wars. We know because they are constantly referencing the 'first and
second' world wars. Also, in this novel the USA and the Soviet Union are in an 'unstable' relationship. They are currently in a nuclear war.
6. The point–of–view in the novel is third–person omniscient. Pat Frank uses this point–of–view so we understand how all the characters feel during this

When I first read the email about the summer reading assignment Mindset, my expectations about what the book would be about completely differed
from what it actually was. My thoughts were that it would only pertain to school and how to stay positive while going through college. After just

I thought of myself as high and almost almighty when compared to other students that actually had to study to be successful. In my own eyes, back
three years ago, I thought that you could only be successful from intelligence you were born with. This superior way thinking changed suddenly when
test grades started to plummet due to my lack of studying. I had just started getting information from schools along with grade point average and
standardized testing requirements. Seeing that D– for the semester made my failure into an example of what not devolve back into. Dweck aced this
chapter, as it was almost an exact timeline of this class. I realized that studying and putting effort into my work did not make me a lower person then

Reading expands your vocabulary and knowledge. When I was reading my book, the Crossover, there were new words and their definition
throughout the book. I learned so many new words like, patellar tendinitis which is also known as jumpers' knee, an injury to the tendon connecting

Pain is an inevitable feeling that hurts humans greatly. There are many different types of pain such as mental, physical, and emotional pain. The
most known type out of these pain is physical pain. Although it is one of the worst types of feelings, it is a very human feeling that is composed

Divergent: Summer Reading Project
I chose the book Divergent for my 2016 Summer Reading Project because I enjoyed the book when I read it. Divergent tells a story about Beatrice
(AKA Tris). She lives in a dystopian city where everyone is divided into five factions. The factions are: Erudite (The Knowledgeable), Amity (The
Peaceful), Candor (The Truthful), Abnegation (The Selfless), and Dauntless (The Brave). Tris doesn't fit into any of these five categories and she
would rather kill herself than become one of the Factionless (the people who didn't succeed in their faction initiation and are basically homeless).
She is told that she is Divergent, a person who cannot be controlled by any one group and therefore feared by everyone. I enjoyed this book
because it tells me what life could be like in the future and how human beings could mess up the world. I wouldn't fit into any one faction and I

The program is set up to make you open your mind to new ideas, because it is required in the college atmosphere. If Converse College required their
incoming freshmen class to read "Approaching the Qur'an", it could create some discomfort within the student body because, there is an astigmatism
with Islam particularity in southern states, which is where most Converse students originated. But I do not believe that Converse students would
refuse to read their assigned book, because they know that Converse values acceptance of any religion, race, and sexuality. But if this issue did arise, I
