THE COMPARISON BETWEEN WESTERN AND EASTERN CULTURE
Culture is formed from several elements that become one, such as religious and political
systems, customs, language, tooling, clothing, buildings, and artwork. When people try to
communicate with people of different cultures and adjust their differences, prove that the culture
is learned. In this world, so many people must have different cultures. Globally, culture is
divided into two, namely: Western Culture and Eastern Culture.
The personality of the eastern nation can be defined as an attitude possessed by a country
that determines its adaptability to the environment. Eastern personality in general is a personality
that has a high tolerance. The personality of the eastern people included indonesia which is
known as a good personality. The eastern world is known as friendly nation.
In general the personality of the eastern people is very overt and tolerant to other nations,
but as long as it is in accordance with the norms, ethics and customs that exist. But even though
we already know a lot about the personality of the East we can not always assume that the
eastern culture is better than the Western culture. Because all things definitely have positive and
negative side. Nothing in this world is entirely good.
For the example, the eastern people is identical to the Asian continent whose inhabitants
are mostly black-haired, brown-skinned and white-skinned, white-eyed. The personality of the
eastern people in terms of clothing will be more polite (closed clothes) than western people,
because the eastern people has a very high sense of shame and they mostly embraced the religion
of Islam and uphold the prevailing norms. But in this day, easterners mostly imitate western
habits which is more confident in dressing. So, it is depend on that eastererners in using the
culture in their life.

While the personality of the western nations how to build their consciousness by way of
understand the knowledge of science and philosophy. They engage in various ways of discussion
and debate to discover or determine what kind of the real meaning or the real consciousness is.
Through the process of learning and teaching, western culture experts are required to be clever in
lecturing and discussing, because in the end will be many who follow their teachings.
Western culture cannot be interpreted directly that comes from the west. Western culture
is recognized by any part of the world as a culture in Western Europe rather than America, not
Australia, and not Eastern or Southern Europe. But as the development, there are boundaries that
restrict western and eastern cultures. Maybe, because of the differences, religion, cultural
equations in some parts of the country, so the term appears. So, if we are directly minded,
western culture a term of a wind direction is in the western part is actually not like that, but
rather a term that originated from the western European region.
There are three dominant traits in Western culture:
 The first is "respect for human dignity". This can be seen in values such as: democracy,
social institutions, and economic prosperity.
 The second is "freedom". In the West children speak openly in front of adults, people
dress according to their individual tastes, express opinions freely, do not distinguish
between social status and so on.
 Third is the "creation and utilization of technology". Such as jet aircraft, satellite,
television, telephone, electricity, computer, etc. Westerners emphasize on logic and
science. Westerners tend to be active and analytical.
P a g e | 3
In general, there are some comparisons between eastern and western culture :
1. Opinion
Easterners tend to be convoluted in terms of arguing, even though when they want
to say about little things and actually the intention or purpose is not as
complicated as it is meant. Very different from Westerners, they go straight to the
point and they do not say nonsense things.
2. Time
Easterners are known lack of respect when there is a promise, sometimes not
timely. In contrast to Westerners they are very appreciative of the time, because
most of them do not like about time inaccurate. They prefer to be on time.
3. Lifestyle
Eastern people, especially Indonesia is very happy to stay close with their family,
the most important things is gathering, even though there is no special moment
which is become the reason they have quality time. Different with Westerners
they tend to be individualistic and usually like to stay at home.
4. Relationship
Because Eastern people are very social or more complex relationships, therefore
Facebook or Friendster net sites are more in demand by Easterners, especially
Indonesia. Easterners tend to be more caring each other, so the social media is
becoming the tools for their express their problem or their feelings to others. In
contrast to Westerners, they are more individualistic or rarely to establish
relationships with others. They tend to do not want join many community,
because most of them will think like "I do not care" as long as there is no people
P a g e | 4
who annoy them. Westerners also tend to be igronant with the other problem and
they don not like with people who interfere their freedom.
5. Celebration
If there is a celebration or party, the eastern people prefer to invite as many
people, and usually they will spend a lot of money for the wedding party, birthday
party or anniversary party. Unlike to the Westerners, the wedding or birthday
invitation only through Fax. and not everyone is invited, enough relatives or close
friends, more simple and not wasteful of expenses.
6. About Something New
For the east people, if there is something new they tend to be not satisfied if not
to have it, so that is no wonder if they are wasteful like, have a mobile or cars
different every year, even a collection of HP, just because do not want to miss the
model and do not want to lose competitiveness with others. In contrast to Western
people, they tend to be keep calm and just know it. Not necessarily have the item
immediately.
7. Parenting
Eastern people (especially in Indonesia) the treatment of parents to the children is
very indulgent, so the child is not independent, even though they have been
already adult. In contrast to Western families, their children are trained to be
independent from childhood, when they are adults, the parent will give them
freedom as long as the children can safe themselves. They may also call their
parents with name, it does not mean the children are not polite to their parent. But,
it means the close relation between them.
P a g e | 5
8. Boss
Interestingly, East or Asian people generally treat superiors more than others, and
the boss likes to be treated like that. Unlike if in the West, the boss is not very
self-asserted as a full power, still parallel with subordinates, but still have the
power and recognized as superiors.
9. Transportation
Formerly, Westerners prefer to using cars, but now prefer to using bicycles.
Perhaps because of the importance of health and this is different with Easterners.
If they used to ride bicycles (because at that time, they only capable to buy
bicycle), now prefer to using cars and if they can afford to use private drivers.
10. Facing the problem
Easterners are more general minded how to avoid problems. Unlike Westerners,
they tend to face the problem. Sometimes most of the east, when they want to get
success, they prefer to choosing the instant way like bribe someone, the officials,
or even the business partners to achieve success things. Otherwise, westerners
tend to deal with problems wisely, they tend to deal with problems well and not
with the instant way.
11. Attitude towards nature
Eastern culture encourages people to live as a part of nature in unity with nature.
While Western culture, assums that nature as an object which can be mastered and
exploited. Easterners are more quiet and contemplative, while Westerners are
active and explorative. This explorative spirit is actually good, as long as it is
under control and not exploitative. Easterners seek more for life than wealth. So,
P a g e | 6
in the West they becomes an active people who taking the role of forming the
history. They must determine their own destiny and believe in their own ability to
combat suffering, illness and ignorance. But in the East, they are more surrender
in life as it is.
12. Angry
If the Westerners are angry, it means they are really angry. Different with the
Easterners, they often hide away their anger, even sometimes they do fake smile
(Actually they are angry but pretend to keep smilling).
13. Knowledge
Western culture emphasizes critical knowledge analysis by searching for causal
elements and building arguments. This is because human nature is placed on the
mind. In contrast, Eastern culture emphasizes intuitive knowledge that is
comprehensive and involves emotional elements. For real Easterners it must not
always be explained rationally. They recognize, that there are things like mystery
and irrationality. So the center of the human personality is not located in their
intellect, but in their heart.
14. The atmosphere of eating
The western people prefer to eat food in a more calm atmosphere, while for the
culture of the people of the East prefer to crowded and often heard rowdy.
Actually from the culture of eating, it can be improved where we just focus to
spend every food served so it needs a more peaceful and calm atmosphere of the
room.
P a g e | 7
15. MOOD
The subsequent difference of westerners and easterners is at a time of weather
change, where the western people are heavily influenced by the weather while for
the east it is not. We know that in western culture there are more weather
conditions than easterners, even all the activities of the east are not affected by the
weather at all, but for westerners their mood can be affected by the weather so it
is very volatile.
That is some comparison between western and eastern civilization. I think
both of them have positive and negative impacts. Basically all cultures are good,
sometimes it is depend on the person who embracing the culture.

The comparison between western and eastern culture

  • 1. P a g e | 1 THE COMPARISON BETWEEN WESTERN AND EASTERN CULTURE Culture is formed from several elements that become one, such as religious and political systems, customs, language, tooling, clothing, buildings, and artwork. When people try to communicate with people of different cultures and adjust their differences, prove that the culture is learned. In this world, so many people must have different cultures. Globally, culture is divided into two, namely: Western Culture and Eastern Culture. The personality of the eastern nation can be defined as an attitude possessed by a country that determines its adaptability to the environment. Eastern personality in general is a personality that has a high tolerance. The personality of the eastern people included indonesia which is known as a good personality. The eastern world is known as friendly nation. In general the personality of the eastern people is very overt and tolerant to other nations, but as long as it is in accordance with the norms, ethics and customs that exist. But even though we already know a lot about the personality of the East we can not always assume that the eastern culture is better than the Western culture. Because all things definitely have positive and negative side. Nothing in this world is entirely good. For the example, the eastern people is identical to the Asian continent whose inhabitants are mostly black-haired, brown-skinned and white-skinned, white-eyed. The personality of the eastern people in terms of clothing will be more polite (closed clothes) than western people, because the eastern people has a very high sense of shame and they mostly embraced the religion of Islam and uphold the prevailing norms. But in this day, easterners mostly imitate western habits which is more confident in dressing. So, it is depend on that eastererners in using the culture in their life.
  • 2. P a g e | 2 While the personality of the western nations how to build their consciousness by way of understand the knowledge of science and philosophy. They engage in various ways of discussion and debate to discover or determine what kind of the real meaning or the real consciousness is. Through the process of learning and teaching, western culture experts are required to be clever in lecturing and discussing, because in the end will be many who follow their teachings. Western culture cannot be interpreted directly that comes from the west. Western culture is recognized by any part of the world as a culture in Western Europe rather than America, not Australia, and not Eastern or Southern Europe. But as the development, there are boundaries that restrict western and eastern cultures. Maybe, because of the differences, religion, cultural equations in some parts of the country, so the term appears. So, if we are directly minded, western culture a term of a wind direction is in the western part is actually not like that, but rather a term that originated from the western European region. There are three dominant traits in Western culture:  The first is "respect for human dignity". This can be seen in values such as: democracy, social institutions, and economic prosperity.  The second is "freedom". In the West children speak openly in front of adults, people dress according to their individual tastes, express opinions freely, do not distinguish between social status and so on.  Third is the "creation and utilization of technology". Such as jet aircraft, satellite, television, telephone, electricity, computer, etc. Westerners emphasize on logic and science. Westerners tend to be active and analytical.
  • 3. P a g e | 3 In general, there are some comparisons between eastern and western culture : 1. Opinion Easterners tend to be convoluted in terms of arguing, even though when they want to say about little things and actually the intention or purpose is not as complicated as it is meant. Very different from Westerners, they go straight to the point and they do not say nonsense things. 2. Time Easterners are known lack of respect when there is a promise, sometimes not timely. In contrast to Westerners they are very appreciative of the time, because most of them do not like about time inaccurate. They prefer to be on time. 3. Lifestyle Eastern people, especially Indonesia is very happy to stay close with their family, the most important things is gathering, even though there is no special moment which is become the reason they have quality time. Different with Westerners they tend to be individualistic and usually like to stay at home. 4. Relationship Because Eastern people are very social or more complex relationships, therefore Facebook or Friendster net sites are more in demand by Easterners, especially Indonesia. Easterners tend to be more caring each other, so the social media is becoming the tools for their express their problem or their feelings to others. In contrast to Westerners, they are more individualistic or rarely to establish relationships with others. They tend to do not want join many community, because most of them will think like "I do not care" as long as there is no people
  • 4. P a g e | 4 who annoy them. Westerners also tend to be igronant with the other problem and they don not like with people who interfere their freedom. 5. Celebration If there is a celebration or party, the eastern people prefer to invite as many people, and usually they will spend a lot of money for the wedding party, birthday party or anniversary party. Unlike to the Westerners, the wedding or birthday invitation only through Fax. and not everyone is invited, enough relatives or close friends, more simple and not wasteful of expenses. 6. About Something New For the east people, if there is something new they tend to be not satisfied if not to have it, so that is no wonder if they are wasteful like, have a mobile or cars different every year, even a collection of HP, just because do not want to miss the model and do not want to lose competitiveness with others. In contrast to Western people, they tend to be keep calm and just know it. Not necessarily have the item immediately. 7. Parenting Eastern people (especially in Indonesia) the treatment of parents to the children is very indulgent, so the child is not independent, even though they have been already adult. In contrast to Western families, their children are trained to be independent from childhood, when they are adults, the parent will give them freedom as long as the children can safe themselves. They may also call their parents with name, it does not mean the children are not polite to their parent. But, it means the close relation between them.
  • 5. P a g e | 5 8. Boss Interestingly, East or Asian people generally treat superiors more than others, and the boss likes to be treated like that. Unlike if in the West, the boss is not very self-asserted as a full power, still parallel with subordinates, but still have the power and recognized as superiors. 9. Transportation Formerly, Westerners prefer to using cars, but now prefer to using bicycles. Perhaps because of the importance of health and this is different with Easterners. If they used to ride bicycles (because at that time, they only capable to buy bicycle), now prefer to using cars and if they can afford to use private drivers. 10. Facing the problem Easterners are more general minded how to avoid problems. Unlike Westerners, they tend to face the problem. Sometimes most of the east, when they want to get success, they prefer to choosing the instant way like bribe someone, the officials, or even the business partners to achieve success things. Otherwise, westerners tend to deal with problems wisely, they tend to deal with problems well and not with the instant way. 11. Attitude towards nature Eastern culture encourages people to live as a part of nature in unity with nature. While Western culture, assums that nature as an object which can be mastered and exploited. Easterners are more quiet and contemplative, while Westerners are active and explorative. This explorative spirit is actually good, as long as it is under control and not exploitative. Easterners seek more for life than wealth. So,
  • 6. P a g e | 6 in the West they becomes an active people who taking the role of forming the history. They must determine their own destiny and believe in their own ability to combat suffering, illness and ignorance. But in the East, they are more surrender in life as it is. 12. Angry If the Westerners are angry, it means they are really angry. Different with the Easterners, they often hide away their anger, even sometimes they do fake smile (Actually they are angry but pretend to keep smilling). 13. Knowledge Western culture emphasizes critical knowledge analysis by searching for causal elements and building arguments. This is because human nature is placed on the mind. In contrast, Eastern culture emphasizes intuitive knowledge that is comprehensive and involves emotional elements. For real Easterners it must not always be explained rationally. They recognize, that there are things like mystery and irrationality. So the center of the human personality is not located in their intellect, but in their heart. 14. The atmosphere of eating The western people prefer to eat food in a more calm atmosphere, while for the culture of the people of the East prefer to crowded and often heard rowdy. Actually from the culture of eating, it can be improved where we just focus to spend every food served so it needs a more peaceful and calm atmosphere of the room.
  • 7. P a g e | 7 15. MOOD The subsequent difference of westerners and easterners is at a time of weather change, where the western people are heavily influenced by the weather while for the east it is not. We know that in western culture there are more weather conditions than easterners, even all the activities of the east are not affected by the weather at all, but for westerners their mood can be affected by the weather so it is very volatile. That is some comparison between western and eastern civilization. I think both of them have positive and negative impacts. Basically all cultures are good, sometimes it is depend on the person who embracing the culture.
