The Cold War expanded globally through the 1950s as tensions rose between the United States and Soviet Union. They engaged in an arms race, stockpiling nuclear weapons on a massive scale in a strategy of mutually assured destruction. President Eisenhower pursued containment of communism through nuclear deterrence rather than conventional forces. Conflicts erupted in areas like Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and were met with new policies like massive retaliation and the Eisenhower Doctrine. Congratulations to everyone to making it to week four! We are officially past the half way mark. This is a good time to take a step back and take stock of everything you have learned so far. If you are behind on your work for the course, it might be a good time to reach out to your instructor to see what you can do to get caught up.
This is also a good time to go over the sources that you have found for your final project, reading carefully and closely. It might help to keep researching at the Ashford Library (see the week three guidance for more help finding sources). As you read over your sources, ask yourself “what are they saying about the topic, and how can I use what they are saying to support what I want to say”. Also, take notes as you read, so that you can go back and use useful materials from sources. Use quotes sparingly and make sure that you explain the quote and put it in the context of your own thinking.

against the Soviet Union?
By 1950, the United States and the Soviet Union were world
superpowers.
Tensions ran high as each stockpiled weapons and struggled for
influence around the globe.
8. On September 2, 1949,
the balance of power
between the U.S. and the
Soviet Union changed
forever.
That day, the Soviet Union tested an
atomic bomb.
The threat of nuclear war suddenly
became very real.
9. In response, Truman ordered scientists to produce
a hydrogen bomb—a bomb 1,000 times more
powerful than the atomic bomb.
In 1952,
the U.S.
tested the
first
H-bomb.
The next
year, the
Soviets
tested their
own H-bomb.
The arms
race had
begun.
10. •In time, the United States and the Soviet Union
would build enough nuclear weapons to destroy
each other many times over.
•Both sides hoped that this program of

defense program, believing that if there was
another major war, it would be nuclear.

Truman, Eisenhower
was not interested in
fighting communism by
building conventional

•Instead, he and his

John Foster Dulles

They believed that by meeting communist threats with U.S. threats of
massive retaliation and brinkmanship they could prevent war.

• Eisenhower used the Eisenhower Doctrine to justify sending troops to
quell conflicts.
• He also approved secret CIA operations to promote American interests
abroad.

communism on the ground, they suffered a
serious setback in space.
In 1957, the Soviets
launched the Sputnik
I satellite into orbit
around Earth.

Congress approved
funding to create
NASA.
