The clavicle is a long bone that supports the shoulder and transmits the weight of the arm to the sternum. It has a cylindrical shaft with lateral and medial ends. The lateral end is flat and articulates with the acromion process to form the acromioclavicular joint. The medial end is quadrangular and articulates with the manubrium to form the sternoclavicular joint. The clavicle is the only horizontal long bone in the body.

shoulder so that the arm can swing easily. It
transmits the weight of the limb to the sternum.

 Two ends – Lateral and Medial

3.  The shaft is divided into lateral one- third
(1/3) & medial two third (2/3).

4.  The lateral 1/3 is flattened from above
downwards
 Borders
i. Anterior – concave forwards
ii. Posterior – convex downwards
 Surfaces
i. Superior – it is subcutaneous.
ii. Inferior – it presents an elevation called the
conoid tubercle & trapezoid ridge.

6.  The shaft is rounded and has 4 surfaces.
 Surfaces
i. Anterior – it is convex forwards.
ii. Posterior – it is smooth.
iii. Superior – rough in its medial part.
iv. Inferior – has rough oval impression and &
subclavian groove.

8.  Lateral/acromian end is flattened from above
downwards.
 It has a facet that articulates with the
acromian process of the scapula to form the
acromioclavicular joint.

10.  The medial end is quadrangular & articulates
with the clavicular notch of the manubrium
sterni to form the sternoclvicular joint.
 The articular surface extends to the inferior
aspect, for the articulation of the first costal
cartilage.

12.  The lateral end is flat, and the medial end is
quadrangular.
 In its medial 2/3 it is concave forwards & in
its lateral 1/3 it is concave forwards
 The inferior surface has subclavian groove.

13.  It is the only long bone that lies horizontally.
 It is subcutaneous throughout.
 It the first bone to start ossifying.
 It is the only long bone which ossifies in
membrane.
 It is the only long bone which has two primary
centres for ossification.
 No medullary cavity.
 Pierced my middle supraclavicular nerve.

14.  Anteriorly medial 2/3 provides attachment to
clavicular head of pectoralis major.
 Superior surface of medial 2/3 provides
attachment to sternocleido mastoid
 Inferiorly medial 2/3 provides attachment to
costoclavicular ligament.
 Subclavian groove gives insertion to
subclavious .

15.  Anteriorly lateral 1/3 gives attachment to
anterior fibers of deltoid.
 Trapezius gets inserted in the superior &
posterior part of lateral 1/3
 In inferior surface, lateral 1/3 gives
attachment to coracoclavicular ligament.
