India is home to an extraordinary variety of climatic regions, ranging from tropical in the south to temperate in the Himalayan north, where elevated regions receive sustained winter snowfall. The nation's climate is strongly influenced by the Himalayas and The Thar Desert.Though the Tropic of Cancer—the boundary between the tropics and subtropics—passes through the middle of India, the bulk of the country can be regarded as climatically tropical.
This module is specially designed for students living in vicinity of wilderness areas. However some of the activities mentioned can be conducted for the students living away from wilderness areas. cutting of trees. The name of the movement comes from the
word 'embrace', as the villagers hugged the trees, and
prevented the contractors from cutting them.
3. The first Chipko action took
place spontaneously in April
1973 in the village of Mandal
in the Upper Alakananda valley
and over the next five years
spread to many districts of the
Himalayas in Uttar Pradesh.
4. It was sparked off when the
government decided to give a
plot of the forest area to a
sports good company. This
angered the villagers.
5. The women of the area
went into the forest
and formed a circle
around the trees, preventing
the contractors from
cutting them down.
