The Assault Of Sexually Assault Female Inmates
Introduction It was very common that women are being raped by jail guards in the United States.
(Armstrong, 2013). Some you may hear about, most you will never hear about, because of the lack
of media coverage (Armstrong, 2013). This paper will reflect on how jail guards have the access to
sexually assault female inmates every day. This paper will also reflect on where the sexual assault
may occur, when the sexual assault may occur, and the vulnerability of the environment in the jails
where sexual assaults can be committed to the female inmates. These assaults happen in the jail
system every day, and this paper will further more help one to understand the crime itself, and how
to deter this from happening as often or even at all in the female jails. The power that the guards
have on female inmates when imprisoned in jails are at an all–time high. (Summer, 2007). These
female inmates have to rely on these guards for several things, such as food, clothing, and different
privileges, if any is available depending on their stay and what jail they stay in (Summer, 2007). Not
only do female inmates have to rely on the correctional guards in the jails for different necessities
and privileges, but the guards have unlimited access to these female inmates (Summer, 2007). These
correctional guards have access to where the female inmates sleep, and take showers/use the
restrooms, and with such access to these female inmates, and the power that these correctional
guards have over these

Sexual Assault College Campus
What is sexual assault? According to the United States Department of Justice it is any type of sexual
contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient.
Many teens enter college expecting a different atmosphere from what they had in high school, but in
reality they may have more to worry about than they originally thought. Although the number of
cases of sexual assault on college campuses has decreased since 1993 it is still a relevant topic. 5%
of women, every year, on college campuses experience rape or attempted rape as reported by One in
Four, a non–profit organization dedicated to the prevention of rape. 11% of women who experience
rape actually report it to the police; most sworn campus law enforcement officials

Assault Of Prostitution
As academia progresses in nature, there has been an increased awareness in the severity and
commonality of rape and sexual assault. Conversely, despite how much literature is present on the
matter, there is still a grossly disproportionate amount of literature on the nature of rape and sexual
assault of marginalized victims versus that of an 'ideal victim' (Christie, 1986). More specifically
there is very little to no research and literature on the topic of rape and sexual assault of prostitutes
while in the process of their occupation. Women involved in prostitution are amongst the most
victimized groups in society. However, there are some critics who present prostitution as a non–
victim crime (Matthews, 2015). Victimization raises the issue ... Show more content on

The complainant said she met two men at a tavern in Calgary in 1977 where she accompanied them
to their apartment. However, at the apartment the men then forced her to remove her clothing, had
non–consensual sexual intercourse with her, burnt her several times using a spoon heated over a gas
stove, punched her, bit her, threatened to kill her with a knife and attempted to drown her in a
bathtub. The men claimed that the sexual intercourse was consensual and that the woman's injuries
were a result of an accidental fall down the stairs and of a 'head butt' delivered by one of the men.
During cross–examination the complainant admitted she had a history of prostitution. However, she
claimed that at the time of the rape she had not practiced prostitution for 5 months. The Royal
Canadian Mounted Police and the Calgary City police then presented evidence to the court that the
defendant was a 'known' prostitute. The trial judge allowed this evidence to be admitted to the
proceedings, where the accused were subsequently found not guilty of rape but were convicted of
causing bodily harm. The Appeal judge commented on the strangeness of the jury accepting the
victim's story about bodily harm but rejecting her story about the rape; he said, 'Certainly it
demonstrates the difficulty of convincing a jury that a prostitute may be raped'. In the case of R v
Bashir and Manzur, the complainant accused two men of raping her, however their defence was that
while sexual intercourse had occurred, this was consensual. During the trial the defence did a cross–
examination of the victim, and counsel put it to her that she was a prostitute. It was claimed the
victim had approached another man inviting him to have sexual intercourse with her for money and

Sexual Assault Of The Military
Sexual assault in the military has been an ongoing problem for centuries. In the United States Armed
Forces sexual assault is a crime that has just recently drawn a great deal of public attention and has
placed pressure on the government to put a stop to the abuse. The department of defense under
pressure and supervision from the government is going to great measures to address this ongoing
problem. Although measures are in place to educate, protect the victims, and punish the offenders,
the problem still exists and there has been little improvement to show the measures are working. It
could be argued that repealing the don't ask don't tell policy has contributed significantly the sexual
assault problem in the military.

Assault In Universities
The focus of my paper is to explore what kind of services and programs, are offered to victims of
sexual assault. The research question that will be focused throughout this paper is: In what ways do
Universities and Colleges assist victims of Sexual Assault? According to the United States
Department of Justice (2017), sexual assault is defined as "any type of sexual contact or behavior
that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Falling under the definition of sexual assault
are sexual activities as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest,
fondling, and attempted rape" (DOJ 2017). As you can see sexual assault has various situations that
could cause some situations to be sexual assault. Statistics show how 95% of campus sexual assault
is unreported, 90% of women know who sexually assaulted them, 50% of sexual assaults on campus
are alcohol related, 80% of rape victims suffer chronic physical and psychological problems over
time (PACT5:2017). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the effects on the victim physically, emotionally and academically. A review of literature makes it
clear that services and programs offered to victims of sexual assault on universities and college

Sexual Assault In The Hunting Ground
Imagine this, you just moved into your dorm at your first choice of school ready to start the next
four years of college, only to get taken advantage of sexually by an upperclassman at your first
college party. This is just one of the many scenarios the documentary "The Hunting Ground" tells
and happens to sixteen percent of women who start their college careers. The film tells the
inspirational story of Andrea Pino and Annie Clark, two UNC Chapel Hill graduates, and their
continuous journey to end sexual assaults on college campuses and to motivate schools to stand up
for their students. While sexual assault has unfortunately always been a part of the college
experience, the epidemic has reached a breaking point in recent years, and the documentary ... Show

Consequences Facing Assault Charges
As was discussed in a previous post, you could face assault charges in Colorado if you accidentally,
negligently or intentionally cause bodily injury to another person. The penalties you may face if
convicted of these charges vary depending on the type of assault you are charged with. Third degree,
second degree and first–degree assault are different level charges, each carrying separate
consequences.
According to the Boulder County Bar Association, assault in the third degree is a class one
misdemeanor charge. A conviction of this charge could result in a prison sentence of up to two
years. Factors, including your criminal record, may affect the duration of your sentence. If, however,
you injure someone who is considered at–risk, then the

Victims of rape and sexual are assault are at risk of contracting a sexual transmitted disease. It's hard
to ascertain as to whether the victim of the assault was infected prior to the assault or during. In any
case, victims of rape and sexual assault are at risk for more than 20 known sexually transmitted
diseases. The number of occurrences ranges from 5%–30% depending on the sample (Murphy,
Munday, & Jeffries, 1990).The risk of contracting HIV from a sexual assault is relatively low with
estimated rates of transmission every instance being at approximately 1 in 500. (Gostin, Lazzarini,

It is important to have Godly spiritual support following an attack. God says in His word that the
prayers of his people are effective. Jas 5:12 says "Confess your faults one to another, and pray one
for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much."
Victims of assault need the healing that only God can give. It is important to seek out a fellow
Christian for prayer and spiritual guidance in the healing process after a sexual assault. Getting the
support of an educated counselor is critically important following an attack so a sense of control can
be restored to the victim (James & Gillian ,2013). Seeking out the right counseling after such a
trauma is vital. Proverbs 11:14 says "Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of
counsellors there is safety." (KJV). Counseling is an important part of the recovery process. A
counselor helps the victim process what has happened to them and help put support systems in place
with the goal of minimizing the residual effects the attack has on the victim's life. (James & Gillian
,2013).

Symbolism Of The Novel ' The Assault '
Symbolism has a powerful effect on both the conscious and unconscious mind. Conspicuous
symbolism engages the conscious mind, making one think about the many clever connections the
author has made. Symbolism of the more subtle variety can have just as much of an effect on the
reader; even though the reader may miss an intentional connection made by the author, they are
likely to detect it subliminally. This can have a profound impact on the reader's understanding and
impression of a work. In his novel the Assault, a novel about the consequences of a particular
dramatic event that occurred during World War II where the main character's house was incinerated
and all of his close family killed, Harry Mulisch takes advantage of this fact ... Show more content

In this scene, Anton serves as the contrary party to Truus. Because of the emphasis placed on his
youth and naiveté, Anton contrasts strongly with the motherly wisdom of Truus. Anton strengthens
Truus's assertion by commenting on the antithesis, "But if that's the case, then... No one's ever at
fault. Then everyone can just do as they please" (33). Similarly at the end of the episode 2 when
Anton entertains Fake Ploeg, Ploeg is introduced as having come in from the night from the chaos of
a riot. This emphasizes his disorganized mind as he tries to explain to Anton the innocence of his
father. However, he is unable to convince Anton because his origins seem to come from the darkness
of the past, and because what he says is directly contrary to what Truus states earlier in the novel it
is impossible for Fake's argument to be convincing to the reader. This is an example of how Mulisch
is able to either support or discount arguments he presents by the symbolism associated with the
character making it
Mulisch uses references to darkness as well as small as seemingly unimportant details that reach in a
conspicuous manner to impact the reader. The most important instance of this is the reference to the
darkness within the neighboring houses, as the windows are closed and covered to avoid any
confrontation with the Krauts. During the original description of the assault, nothing is revealed
about what is happening within the neighboring houses. The only description

242.3/100,000 people in 2012 (FBI: Crime in US 2012). The Bureau of Justice Statistics defines

sexual assault on college campuses reflects and reinforces gender inequality.

college campuses in the United States go unreported. These striking statistics resonate a dire call for
increased prevention of sexual assault on campuses across the nation. With the passing of the

As stated by an article from Bettercolleges.com, sexual assault can also involve forcing someone
into non–consensual sexual acts by means of manipulation, any form of coercion, or psychological
force. Sexual violence is more prevalent on college campuses compared to other crimes. In fact,
according to Rainn.org college women are twice as likely to be sexually assaulted as they are to be
robbed. The sad reality is that these victim's voices are often never heard: only 5 percent of female
student victims between the ages of 18 and 24 ever report to law enforcement because of factors
such as distrust of authorities and fear of blame ("Campus Sexual Violence: Statistics"). In regard to
male victims, they oftentimes face different types of stigma branching from issues such as
stereotypes about hyper masculinity, sexual desire, and what it means to "be a man" in society,
preventing them from reporting unwanted sexual activity ("Realities of Sexual Assault on
Campus"). In the cases of both men and women, these assaults are often enhanced by the increased
presence of alcohol and drugs on campuses. For instance, one study found that 15 percent of young
women experienced incapacitated rape during their first year of college, meaning that when were
raped when they could not give consent because they did not know what was happening ("Sexual
Assault on College Campuses"). Peer pressure to participate in these types of social activities puts
victims in a more vulnerable position for sexual assault. This environment in which rape is prevalent
and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused by leaders within the school
system is known as rape

The Motif Of Water In The Assault By Harry Mulisch
In Harry Mulisch's novel The Assault, Mulisch expands on the historical event of the murder of
Fake Kirst who was assassinated on the streets of Amsterdam by Grommet Krijger through the life
of Anton Steenwijk following World War Two. Throughout the novel Mulisch takes advantage of
numerous motifs and expands their ability through a longstanding motif of water. He uses these
themes to develop the central character Anton who works to conquer history and his own past. The
motif of water is a strong decision by Mulisch that broadens the novel's overall depth and meaning .
Within the first episode Mulisch introduces the concept of water as Anton is trapped in a prison cell

and the past is only visible in memory (151). Subsequently Mulisch has tardily ended the ongoing

Psychological Theories Of Assault
Assault is a violent crime that requires offensive touching, hitting, or frightening the victim by word
or deed. Assault crime can be upgraded to a felony when weapons are involved or abusing a victim
during the commission of a felony. Although assault can happen during crimes like robbery and
homicide, abuse happen mostly within a family or relationship (for example child abuse, parental
abuse, dating violence).

The Assault By Harry Mulisch Essay
In The Assault by Harry Mulisch, the themes of guilt and innocence are highly prevalent throughout
its storyline and are more often than not related to each other. In these situations, Mulisch employs
his diverse cast of characters, their motives, and their fates to intertwine these themes and create a
morally ambiguous political thriller that leaves the audience unsure of a definite resolution. The first
set of characters Mulisch employs is the Ploeg family. When Fake Ploeg is murdered in the
beginning of the novel, Anton recalls him as being the "greatest murderer and traitor in Haarlem"
(Mulisch 17), immediately informing the audience that he was intensely disliked among his
community. Later, the reader learns that he was a Nazi collaborator ... Show more content on

Toward the end of the novel, Anton's final encounter relating to the night of the assault is with his
old neighbor, Karin Korteweg. After questioning her about why she and her father chose to place the
body in front of his house as opposed to the other neighbors, such as the Aarteses, she replied that
her father had said, "No, not there. They're hiding Jews!" (Mulisch 183). This astonishes both the
audience and Anton by providing the final piece to the puzzle they have been trying to solve over
the course of this novel. With this revelation, Mulisch also applies the themes of innocence and guilt
by exhibiting how these characters were arguably at fault for the death of Anton's family without
actively participating, and "by being in danger, those three people had unknowingly saved
themselves and the lives of two others" (184). Mulisch leaves Anton pondering if "everyone [was]
both guilty and not guilty? Was guilt innocent and innocence guilty?" (184) to inspire an internal
debate within the reader while leaving him or her with a vague and unresolved conclusion to the
novel to finalize his application of linking the themes of guilt and

Many college students, both men and women, experience some form of sexual assault while living
on the campus due to the lack of safety taught and provided to the students. Therefore, colleges
nationwide should provide the necessities that help students reduce their chances of being a victim
of sexual assault or aid them with assistance if assaulted. Sexual assault is a commonly ignored, but
frequent issue on many college campuses. The victims can suffer when the physical and verbal

The different theories of the causes appear to be controversial among the society. For example, some
can be of prejudicial, stereotypical, or false beliefs about sexual violence (Burt 227). Common
quotes such as "she was asking for it by wearing that short skirt" or "boys will be boys" tend to
make the situation lessen in value. Among the variety of reasons that lead to an assault is the "date
rape drug". The "Date Rape drug" is a very popular drug on college campuses that can put the victim
in a vulnerable state. It is used as an easy way to manipulate the victims due to the excessive amount
of experimenting with alcohol that may occur. To help lessen these chances, young adults should be
educated about the risk that can come with participating in certain activities. College campuses
should also act to help prevent assaults and assist those victims. Colleges should provide and staff
centers and resources that students may report to when they are in a situation like this. One resource
that colleges may overlook is a rape whistle. While counterarguments may claim that students could
take advantage and not be mature while having one in their possession, it is an effective way to help
a student while in a bad situation. "Only 20% of female student victims, age 18–24, report to law
enforcement" (DOJ). Most students do not feel comfortable when such a traumatic event happens to

It is by and large characterized as to constrain somebody to take part in sex by utilizing dangers or

(Legal word reference) "the commission of unlawful sex or unlawful sexual interruption." Not just is
it's definition constantly changing yet it likewise shifts from state to state. This obviously causes a

has become the focal point of public concerns today. According to a 1993 National Crime

The Violence against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994 marked a turning point in our national response
to the problems of both sexual assault and domestic violence. For the first time it considered the
ways in which sexual assault and domestic violence were similar: they are both crimes of violence
against women, rooted in historical and cultural traditions and attitudes. VAWA also addressed the
ways our laws failed to prosecute and punish perpetrators of these crimes of violence, while often
increasing the trauma experienced by victims. The act included measures designed to protect crime
victims' rights and provide crime victims with compensation, establish hotlines for sexual assault
and family violence victims, establish sex offender registration and community notification, protect
women from "date rape," and coordinate law enforcement and social services to deal with crime in a

Throughout Canada there has also been a decrease between the years 2012 and 2014 for violent

also useful too look at the General Social Survey (GSS) who personally contact people to see if they
have been victimized in the past and with this they could have come across and recorded incidents

considered to be the most frequent violent crime in Canada with around 6.4 million criminal
incidents during 2014, 22% of that was physical assault (Statistics Canada, 2014). Physical Assault

Sexual Assault On Women In The Military
The amount of sexual assaults on women in the U.S. military rests unbearably great. In a 2006
study, it showed that female veterans financed by the Department of Veterans Affairs estimated that
about 23–33 percent of women have been assaulted, compared to the 17 percent of women in the
general population. As well as this study a recent Pentagon report had showed that in the academic
year of 2010–2011 there we 65 reported assaults that involved female cadets and midshipmen. Since
many victims are too terrified to come forward about their attacks, it is estimated that about 19,000
assaults took place in the year of 2011. This number is six times the number of attacks reported.

Analysis Of Harry Mulisch 's ' The Assault '
The Significance of Symbolons in Harry Mulisch's "The Assault"
"The Assault" by Harry Mulisch is a fictitious novel with a basis in reality, specifically the reality of
World War II in Amsterdam. It tracks to story of Anton Steenwijk, whose family was killed by the
Germans as a retaliation against the assassination of a Nazi collaborator and police officer, Fake
Ploeg. Anton Steenwijk was the only one out of his family of four to survive, and he constantly
fights to keep these memories buried through years of practiced repression. Despite this, every now
and again, his past is brought to the forefront of his mind by the appearance of characters from his
past. Mulisch plants this novel on a historical foundation, allowing it to be an ... Show more content

How can he be sure that you really are my son? We make a symbolon. He keeps one half, and at
home I give you the other. So then when you get here, they fit together exactly" (15). The symbolon
is used to describe Anton's life, the first half being the person Anton molds himself into following
the assault, and the other half being the four individual incidences that make up his past. Anton
Steenwijk cannot be a whole, complete person until the symbolons come together. So, why didn't
the author allow this? The novel is divided into five episodes, each using the concept of symbolons
as a climax or otherwise integral part. The first use of symbolons is the aforementioned description
of them by Anton's father, and can be considered to be, along with the subsequent events in the first
episode, the first half of the symbolon for Anton's life. This event, the assault, changes Anton's life
and is the sole reason that he goes into such a heightened state of repression which follows him
throughout the rest of his life as was seen in the lines: "His father, who had had to take his hat off...
he pushed the image away, wanted never to remember it again; it should never have been allowed to
happen" as Anton thought about his father while the event is taking place (28). The introduction of
the symbolons at various times in his life, is an attempt by the author in this narrative, to break
Anton out of this state

The Effect Of Sexual Assault On Campus
Since I have come to King's College, I have seen many presentations or speeches about sexual
assault on campus. These events are set up to help prevent sexual assault to female college students.
I haven't heard much about sexual assault actually occurring here, I thought maybe because the
school does a good job of preventing this from occurring. On Thursday, September 24 I went to the
Burke Auditorium to view the screening of The Hunting Ground. The movie made by CNN was a
documentary about sexual assaults at college, and some of the facts that they informed us were
actually very frightening not just to the women, but for everyone who was at the event. The movie

Sexual Assault on Campus ( Armstrong, Hamilton, and Sweeney)
College girls are the most at risk for rape. One major factor why, is the drinking of alcohol while at

Sometimes we forget that men are assaulted too. In 2003 there was a scandal in New York about a
football team that raped lowerclassmen. The players reportedly lured them into a cabin at camp and
used things such as broomstick, pinecones, and golf balls to assault them. It got out a couple days
later when one of the boys was still bleeding at told his parents. One of the boys was so injured that
he needed surgery. When the media got ahold of the story it was automatically assumed as rape,
when you hear about un–consented anal penetration it's considered sexual. In the United States the
definition of rape is as Wencelblat (2004) says "Carnal knowledge of a female, not one's wife,
forcibly and against her will." Only vaginal penetration by the penis constituted "Carnal knowledge"
pg 40. As you can see this leaves it kind of open ended for men. In the case of the football players
they ended up falling under deviant sex acts and indecent assault ( Deviant sex being anal
penetration for anything other than medical purposes). Men being raped is much rarer than women
but it still has happened to one in thirty–three men. One in ten rape victims are

Third-Degree Assault
Sometimes, arguments between people in Greeley, and throughout Colorado, may become physical.
Depending on the circumstances, those involved in physical confrontations with others may be
charged with assault. A serious criminal offense, being convicted of this crime could carry severe
penalties with lasting implications.
Colorado state law establishes three variations of assault offenses – third–degree, second–degree and
first–degree assault. Each of these charges has differing levels of severity and carry different
penalties for a conviction.
Third–degree assault
The least severe of the assault variations is assault in the third degree. According to the Boulder
County Bar Association, people may be accused of third–degree assault if they knowingly,
negligently or recklessly cause others to suffer injuries using deadly weapons. Additionally, causing
a law enforcement officer, firefighter or emergency medical service worker to come into contact
with certain bodily or hazardous fluids may also qualify as third–degree assault.
Under most circumstances, third–degree assault is a class one misdemeanor. As an extraordinary
risk crime, people may be subject to enhanced penalties if convicted of this crime. Colorado state

Introduction of Subject The military has made progress in reducing sexual assault and connecting
victims to services. Sexual assault runs against the grain of military standards of service and value,
yet it continues to happen. Repercussions for reporting these assaults are creating challenges for our
service members, and hindering the progress of their mental and physical care. Continued and
expanded efforts are needed to help support survivors and work to prevent sexual violence from

While a great deal of crimes go unreported in the United States, by far the most common is sexual
assault. While this crime is usually associated with women being the victims, men can also be
assaulted. Sexual assault is different from other crimes, in that the victims often feel like it is their
fault that the crime happened. The majority of these victims are attending college, and are on
campus when the crime takes place. A multitude of colleges in the past have been pushing sexual
assault cases under the rug. Recently, new laws and efforts have been made so that people are aware

Summary OfThe Assault By Harry Mulisch
In 'The Assault', the author, Harry Mulisch, depicts Anton Steenwijk as the protagonist, who
witnesses the violence at the night of the assault. In the subsequent years, Anton distances himself
from the truth of the assault due to his traumatic experience, his incomplete knowledge towards the
event, and his sorrowful memories. The traumatic experience makes Anton reluctant to go back to
Haarlem, where the violent assault takes place. The assault gives Anton a strike, and many times in
the story, he pledges never to go back to Haarlem. For example: "He shouldn't have come; he should
never have returned to Haarlem. He should have buried all that, the way one buries the dead"
(Mulisch 61). It can be inferred that deep in Anton's mind, what happens at that night is the most
horrible moment to him, and such unforgettable memories remind him of never coming back. The
parallel structure here shows a complex mindset that Anton has when he hesitates to return to
Haarlem. The author uses consecutive "should" and "shouldn't" stresses this tone. The "all that" here
probably means all the tragic events happen in Haarlem, including both the assault and deprivation
of Anton's parents. Also, the author uses an analogy, that Anton should forget all the things in
Haarlem and never think about them again, because it is a disgraceful memory of Anton, just like
someone should bury the dead to wipe away the mournful memories. Besides, Anton swears never
to go back to Haarlem even if a job offers him a hundred thousand gulden a year. (61) This shows
Anton is resolved not to go back to Haarlem. His reluctance to return is quite logical: Haarlem is a
place teeming with unjoyful memories, and a place where his house is burnt, and his parents are lost.
Who likes to return to a place where such sorrowful recollection flows? It is the presence of his
traumatic experience that haunts Anton and holds him from going back and seeing the place again.
In the aftermath of the violent assault, Anton develops a psychological distance that makes him too
sorrowful to accept the truth. The sorrow of his can be seen when Anton meets his former neighbor,
Karin. As "Once more the old bitterness welled up, the inexhaustible bitterness. Was he meant to

Essay On Misdemeanor Assault
When Can Misdemeanor Assault Intensify to Felony?
Getting involved in a crime is a serious offense – no matter if it is a minor crime being committed or
a major one, each has its own consequences that one must face whenever they decide to commit a
bad deed.
The government has made mandates and laws protecting the innocent and victims of these crimes
and preserve justice in the society. However, if in case a person is involved in any crime of the state,
they need to understand their charges and the consequences of each crime will be implemented.
Although each state carries its own definition and grounds of charges for each crime committed, but
it doesn't imply that the crime will go unpunished.
If a person is involved in an assault – especially if that person is the aggressor, it has to be
determined if the crime committed is a misdemeanor or felony. The latter carries a more serious
charge. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Or simply called, assault is the attempt to commit battery or do bodily harm. This is an act that is
made to create fear of injury on a victim. You might be wondering if an actual physical contact is
needed to find that a person is guilty of the crime – misdemeanor assault; the fact is, you don't need

Another thing that is considered as misdemeanor assault is when someone attempts to contact a
person and has offensive threats can also lead to an assault charge, even if the act itself if not

You need to keep in mind that any harm, or maligning someone, which can make them fear for their

Our conversations prompted some other questions about the background knowledge they had on
sexual assault, and how the University talked about it versus how their prior schools had discussed
the subject. It was interesting to get a male point of view on the topic because I, along with a lot of
other women on campus, feel like they don't have to deal with the topic of sexual assault as much as
we do. Especially with the required attendance of lectures and educationals on the subject for both
the University and the Greek Life programs. I felt frustrated at times that we all wanted more
information about the sexual assaults that have occurred on campus, but we obviously didn't want to
information about the victim to become public knowledge as it is their private business. I would
agree with a majority of the responses given to the questions, especially the discussion of the "My
Cup is Not My Consent" campaign. As well–intentioned as it was, that campaign is more a joke
now, and we don't want to the University of Iowa to be unintentionally promoting rape–jokes. I also
think that the men on campus should be required to attend just as many sexual assault seminars as
the women do. This issue should be just as much theirs as ours. Perhaps if everyone had a better
understanding what to look for in potential sexual assault situations, then there would be less sexual
assaults occurring on campus.

Sexual Assault In College Essay
Sexual assault among college students is a tragic incident that keeps reoccurring. There are three
predictors I believe heavily contributes to sexual assault among college students. The first predictor
is that an individual is in a college environment that promotes heavy drinking and sexual activity
while drinking. I believe this contributes to the chances of someone getting sexual assaulted because
college students in this environment might think it's the norm and feel that it is ok because their
campus pairs sexual activity with drinking. The consumption of alcohol lowers someone's inhibition
to make plausible decisions. Similarly, if a person is younger age and lower year in school that is
one predictor for sexual assault to occur. Younger age and underclassmen risk being taken advance
of on college campuses. They can be easily lied or fooled to by upperclassmen, especially in a
relationship. Upperclassmen might convince the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

"Among undergraduate students, 23.1% of females and 5.4% of males experience rape or sexual

sexual assault than college campuses. However, many of these occurrences go without penalties
against the attacker, and even more are not reported at all. The lack of consequences for the accused
indirectly suggests that rape and other forms of sexual assault are allowable and create further
problems for the victims of the horrendous actions. Harsher punishments need to be given out for
sexual assault on campus, as the current rulings are biased and immoral. One of the most recent, and

One of the most influential of these are the affirmative consent laws. These laws are defined as "the
choice of some schools to require the presence of ongoing agreement, not just the absence of refusal,
in sexual encounters" (Boyd). The presence of affirmative consent laws would greatly help the
victims in their cases, as without confirmation that the attacked was consensual throughout the
entirety of the incident, the accused would be unable to be let off without some form of punishment.
Despite this, the laws are currently not enforced in the majority of campuses, leaving victims
susceptible to unfair judgments that are in favor of the accused, as rape is often unreasonably
viewed as being acceptable if the person had never objected, even if they had not given consent.
Additionally, even if they state that they protested the actions, numerous people can also claim that
they are lying. In the case of people that had been drunk, unconscious, or otherwise unable to give a
logical or coherent answer when being attacked, the blame will often be put on them, despite the
obvious horrendous acts of the attacker. Moreover, laws stating the severity of these crimes and how
harsh the punishments should be are often overlooked, or not fully enforced, like the affirmative
consent laws. In the aforementioned case of Brock Turner, his sentencing was particularly light,
even for someone who received some form of sentence, as he faced a maximum of fourteen years in
prison, while the prosecutors asked for at least six years (Cleary). The lack of punishments given to
sexual predators will go on to further harm the attacked and give the impression that there is nothing

Sexual Assaults On Campus Campuses
Most college campuses have no reports of sexual assaults on campus. This statistic is very
inaccurate. The current statistics are that 9% of campuses report that rapes have happened on
campus and the other 91% state that there has never been a rape on or around campus. Those
estimated numbers seem hard to believe. Especially with cases such as the victim of the Stanford
Rapist Brock Turner .
After a year of practically living in hell. Turner's victim had to face him in court on trial. Turner and
his defendant team tried to minimize the seriousness of the situation by stating that the accused and
the victim were under the influence of alcohol. Turner alleged could not be responsibility for his
actions because of the accused state of confusion to whether it was content or not. A year after his
original testimony Turner went on to say that it was indeed consensual and that the victim enjoyed
it.
The victim asked to give a statement directionally to her accuser. In this statement she described the
events that lead up to the assault. The victim's sister was home from school for the weekend and
they were having dinner with their parents. The sister had plans to attend a frat party with her

Prosecutors and police officers may be less likely to believe victims if they have no signs of physical
abuse like cuts, bruises, or scrapes, or if they have known their attackers for a long time
(Hilgenkamp 163). Victims often feel ashamed and humiliated for bringing their experiences
forward and become frustrated and furtherly emotionally damaged (Hilgenkamp 163). Dealing with
sexual assault cases differently based on the victim's state and story is unfair to the survivor and will
only further hurt someone who has already suffered through a traumatic ordeal since it causes them
feel as though they are not being listened to or heard. In addition to investigations that are often
biased and poorly conducted, the number of convictions made in sexual assault cases is
astonishingly small. A few years ago, "The Chicago Tribune published the results of a study
involving 171 campus sex complaints at six Midwestern universities. Twelve of the accused
perpetrators were arrested, and only four were convicted" (Hedelman and Brown). Due to the low
conviction rates, many women feel as though their allegations of having been sexually assaulted are
not being taken seriously or even acknowledged (Hedelman and Brown). Unfortunately, sexual
assault is a popular crime on college campuses, but when victims bring their stories forward to law
enforcers, they are not taken seriously and severe punishments are rarely given to assaulters, which
further harms people who have already been wrongly treated. Police and investigators have to

The Assault Of Sexually Assault Female Inmates

  • 1. The Assault Of Sexually Assault Female Inmates Introduction It was very common that women are being raped by jail guards in the United States. (Armstrong, 2013). Some you may hear about, most you will never hear about, because of the lack of media coverage (Armstrong, 2013). This paper will reflect on how jail guards have the access to sexually assault female inmates every day. This paper will also reflect on where the sexual assault may occur, when the sexual assault may occur, and the vulnerability of the environment in the jails where sexual assaults can be committed to the female inmates. These assaults happen in the jail system every day, and this paper will further more help one to understand the crime itself, and how to deter this from happening as often or even at all in the female jails. The power that the guards have on female inmates when imprisoned in jails are at an all–time high. (Summer, 2007). These female inmates have to rely on these guards for several things, such as food, clothing, and different privileges, if any is available depending on their stay and what jail they stay in (Summer, 2007). Not only do female inmates have to rely on the correctional guards in the jails for different necessities and privileges, but the guards have unlimited access to these female inmates (Summer, 2007). These correctional guards have access to where the female inmates sleep, and take showers/use the restrooms, and with such access to these female inmates, and the power that these correctional guards have over these ... • 5. Sexual Assault College Campus What is sexual assault? According to the United States Department of Justice it is any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Many teens enter college expecting a different atmosphere from what they had in high school, but in reality they may have more to worry about than they originally thought. Although the number of cases of sexual assault on college campuses has decreased since 1993 it is still a relevant topic. 5% of women, every year, on college campuses experience rape or attempted rape as reported by One in Four, a non–profit organization dedicated to the prevention of rape. 11% of women who experience rape actually report it to the police; most sworn campus law enforcement officials ... • 7. Assault Of Prostitution As academia progresses in nature, there has been an increased awareness in the severity and commonality of rape and sexual assault. Conversely, despite how much literature is present on the matter, there is still a grossly disproportionate amount of literature on the nature of rape and sexual assault of marginalized victims versus that of an 'ideal victim' (Christie, 1986). More specifically there is very little to no research and literature on the topic of rape and sexual assault of prostitutes while in the process of their occupation. Women involved in prostitution are amongst the most victimized groups in society. However, there are some critics who present prostitution as a non– victim crime (Matthews, 2015). Victimization raises the issue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The complainant said she met two men at a tavern in Calgary in 1977 where she accompanied them to their apartment. However, at the apartment the men then forced her to remove her clothing, had non–consensual sexual intercourse with her, burnt her several times using a spoon heated over a gas stove, punched her, bit her, threatened to kill her with a knife and attempted to drown her in a bathtub. The men claimed that the sexual intercourse was consensual and that the woman's injuries were a result of an accidental fall down the stairs and of a 'head butt' delivered by one of the men. During cross–examination the complainant admitted she had a history of prostitution. However, she claimed that at the time of the rape she had not practiced prostitution for 5 months. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Calgary City police then presented evidence to the court that the defendant was a 'known' prostitute. The trial judge allowed this evidence to be admitted to the proceedings, where the accused were subsequently found not guilty of rape but were convicted of causing bodily harm. The Appeal judge commented on the strangeness of the jury accepting the victim's story about bodily harm but rejecting her story about the rape; he said, 'Certainly it demonstrates the difficulty of convincing a jury that a prostitute may be raped'. In the case of R v Bashir and Manzur, the complainant accused two men of raping her, however their defence was that while sexual intercourse had occurred, this was consensual. During the trial the defence did a cross– examination of the victim, and counsel put it to her that she was a prostitute. It was claimed the victim had approached another man inviting him to have sexual intercourse with her for money and had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the United States Armed Forces sexual assault is a crime that has just recently drawn a great deal of public attention and has placed pressure on the government to put a stop to the abuse. The department of defense under pressure and supervision from the government is going to great measures to address this ongoing problem. Although measures are in place to educate, protect the victims, and punish the offenders, the problem still exists and there has been little improvement to show the measures are working. It could be argued that repealing the don't ask don't tell policy has contributed significantly the sexual assault problem in the military. The research question that will be focused throughout this paper is: In what ways do Universities and Colleges assist victims of Sexual Assault? According to the United States Department of Justice (2017), sexual assault is defined as "any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Falling under the definition of sexual assault are sexual activities as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and attempted rape" (DOJ 2017). As you can see sexual assault has various situations that could cause some situations to be sexual assault. Sexual Assault In The Hunting Ground Imagine this, you just moved into your dorm at your first choice of school ready to start the next four years of college, only to get taken advantage of sexually by an upperclassman at your first college party. This is just one of the many scenarios the documentary "The Hunting Ground" tells and happens to sixteen percent of women who start their college careers. The film tells the inspirational story of Andrea Pino and Annie Clark, two UNC Chapel Hill graduates, and their continuous journey to end sexual assaults on college campuses and to motivate schools to stand up for their students. The penalties you may face if convicted of these charges vary depending on the type of assault you are charged with. Third degree, second degree and first–degree assault are different level charges, each carrying separate consequences. According to the Boulder County Bar Association, assault in the third degree is a class one misdemeanor charge. A conviction of this charge could result in a prison sentence of up to two years. It's hard to ascertain as to whether the victim of the assault was infected prior to the assault or during. In any case, victims of rape and sexual assault are at risk for more than 20 known sexually transmitted diseases. The number of occurrences ranges from 5%–30% depending on the sample (Murphy, Munday, & Jeffries, 1990).The risk of contracting HIV from a sexual assault is relatively low with estimated rates of transmission every instance being at approximately 1 in 500. Jas 5:12 says "Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." Victims of assault need the healing that only God can give. It is important to seek out a fellow Christian for prayer and spiritual guidance in the healing process after a sexual assault. Getting the support of an educated counselor is critically important following an attack so a sense of control can be restored to the victim (James & Gillian ,2013). Seeking out the right counseling after such a trauma is vital. Proverbs 11:14 says "Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety." (KJV). Counseling is an important part of the recovery process. A counselor helps the victim process what has happened to them and help put support systems in place with the goal of minimizing the residual effects the attack has on the victim's life. • 19. Symbolism Of The Novel ' The Assault ' Symbolism has a powerful effect on both the conscious and unconscious mind. Conspicuous symbolism engages the conscious mind, making one think about the many clever connections the author has made. Symbolism of the more subtle variety can have just as much of an effect on the reader; even though the reader may miss an intentional connection made by the author, they are likely to detect it subliminally. This can have a profound impact on the reader's understanding and impression of a work. In his novel the Assault, a novel about the consequences of a particular dramatic event that occurred during World War II where the main character's house was incinerated and all of his close family killed, Harry Mulisch takes advantage of this fact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this scene, Anton serves as the contrary party to Truus. Because of the emphasis placed on his youth and naiveté, Anton contrasts strongly with the motherly wisdom of Truus. Anton strengthens Truus's assertion by commenting on the antithesis, "But if that's the case, then... No one's ever at fault. Then everyone can just do as they please" (33). Similarly at the end of the episode 2 when Anton entertains Fake Ploeg, Ploeg is introduced as having come in from the night from the chaos of a riot. This emphasizes his disorganized mind as he tries to explain to Anton the innocence of his father. However, he is unable to convince Anton because his origins seem to come from the darkness of the past, and because what he says is directly contrary to what Truus states earlier in the novel it is impossible for Fake's argument to be convincing to the reader. This is an example of how Mulisch is able to either support or discount arguments he presents by the symbolism associated with the character making it Mulisch uses references to darkness as well as small as seemingly unimportant details that reach in a conspicuous manner to impact the reader. The most important instance of this is the reference to the darkness within the neighboring houses, as the windows are closed and covered to avoid any confrontation with the Krauts. During the original description of the assault, nothing is revealed about what is happening within the neighboring houses. The only description ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Assault On Campuses In 2016, The United States Department of Justice released this chilling fact: one out of every four female undergraduates will be victim to some form of sexual assault before graduation. Even more terrifying, the American Civil Liberties Union estimates that at least 95 percent of sexual assaults on college campuses in the United States go unreported. These striking statistics resonate a dire call for increased prevention of sexual assault on campuses across the nation. With the passing of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators in 1994, many universities and colleges began to enact sexual assault protection programs (Breitenbecher Hanson). As stated by an article from Bettercolleges.com, sexual assault can also involve forcing someone into non–consensual sexual acts by means of manipulation, any form of coercion, or psychological force. Sexual violence is more prevalent on college campuses compared to other crimes. In fact, according to Rainn.org college women are twice as likely to be sexually assaulted as they are to be robbed. The sad reality is that these victim's voices are often never heard: only 5 percent of female student victims between the ages of 18 and 24 ever report to law enforcement because of factors such as distrust of authorities and fear of blame ("Campus Sexual Violence: Statistics"). In regard to male victims, they oftentimes face different types of stigma branching from issues such as stereotypes about hyper masculinity, sexual desire, and what it means to "be a man" in society, preventing them from reporting unwanted sexual activity ("Realities of Sexual Assault on Campus"). In the cases of both men and women, these assaults are often enhanced by the increased presence of alcohol and drugs on campuses. For instance, one study found that 15 percent of young women experienced incapacitated rape during their first year of college, meaning that when were raped when they could not give consent because they did not know what was happening ("Sexual Assault on College Campuses"). Peer pressure to participate in these types of social activities puts victims in a more vulnerable position for sexual assault. Throughout the novel Mulisch takes advantage of numerous motifs and expands their ability through a longstanding motif of water. He uses these themes to develop the central character Anton who works to conquer history and his own past. • 33. The Assault By Harry Mulisch Essay In The Assault by Harry Mulisch, the themes of guilt and innocence are highly prevalent throughout its storyline and are more often than not related to each other. In these situations, Mulisch employs his diverse cast of characters, their motives, and their fates to intertwine these themes and create a morally ambiguous political thriller that leaves the audience unsure of a definite resolution. The first set of characters Mulisch employs is the Ploeg family. When Fake Ploeg is murdered in the beginning of the novel, Anton recalls him as being the "greatest murderer and traitor in Haarlem" (Mulisch 17), immediately informing the audience that he was intensely disliked among his community. They're hiding Jews!" (Mulisch 183). This astonishes both the audience and Anton by providing the final piece to the puzzle they have been trying to solve over the course of this novel. With this revelation, Mulisch also applies the themes of innocence and guilt by exhibiting how these characters were arguably at fault for the death of Anton's family without actively participating, and "by being in danger, those three people had unknowingly saved themselves and the lives of two others" (184). Mulisch leaves Anton pondering if "everyone [was] both guilty and not guilty? Was guilt innocent and innocence guilty?" For example, some can be of prejudicial, stereotypical, or false beliefs about sexual violence (Burt 227). Common quotes such as "she was asking for it by wearing that short skirt" or "boys will be boys" tend to make the situation lessen in value. Among the variety of reasons that lead to an assault is the "date rape drug". The "Date Rape drug" is a very popular drug on college campuses that can put the victim in a vulnerable state. It is used as an easy way to manipulate the victims due to the excessive amount of experimenting with alcohol that may occur. To help lessen these chances, young adults should be educated about the risk that can come with participating in certain activities. College campuses should also act to help prevent assaults and assist those victims. Colleges should provide and staff centers and resources that students may report to when they are in a situation like this. One resource that colleges may overlook is a rape whistle. The act included measures designed to protect crime victims' rights and provide crime victims with compensation, establish hotlines for sexual assault and family violence victims, establish sex offender registration and community notification, protect women from "date rape," and coordinate law enforcement and social services to deal with crime in a unified manner. Anton Steenwijk cannot be a whole, complete person until the symbolons come together. So, why didn't the author allow this? The novel is divided into five episodes, each using the concept of symbolons as a climax or otherwise integral part. • 59. Summary OfThe Assault By Harry Mulisch In 'The Assault', the author, Harry Mulisch, depicts Anton Steenwijk as the protagonist, who witnesses the violence at the night of the assault. In the subsequent years, Anton distances himself from the truth of the assault due to his traumatic experience, his incomplete knowledge towards the event, and his sorrowful memories. The traumatic experience makes Anton reluctant to go back to Haarlem, where the violent assault takes place. The assault gives Anton a strike, and many times in the story, he pledges never to go back to Haarlem. For example: "He shouldn't have come; he should never have returned to Haarlem. He should have buried all that, the way one buries the dead" (Mulisch 61). It can be inferred that deep in Anton's mind, what happens at that night is the most horrible moment to him, and such unforgettable memories remind him of never coming back. The parallel structure here shows a complex mindset that Anton has when he hesitates to return to Haarlem. The author uses consecutive "should" and "shouldn't" stresses this tone. The "all that" here probably means all the tragic events happen in Haarlem, including both the assault and deprivation of Anton's parents. Also, the author uses an analogy, that Anton should forget all the things in Haarlem and never think about them again, because it is a disgraceful memory of Anton, just like someone should bury the dead to wipe away the mournful memories. Besides, Anton swears never to go back to Haarlem even if a job offers him a hundred thousand gulden a year. (61) This shows Anton is resolved not to go back to Haarlem. His reluctance to return is quite logical: Haarlem is a place teeming with unjoyful memories, and a place where his house is burnt, and his parents are lost. Who likes to return to a place where such sorrowful recollection flows? It is the presence of his traumatic experience that haunts Anton and holds him from going back and seeing the place again. In the aftermath of the violent assault, Anton develops a psychological distance that makes him too sorrowful to accept the truth. The sorrow of his can be seen when Anton meets his former neighbor, Karin. As "Once more the old bitterness welled up, the inexhaustible bitterness. Was he meant to ... • 61. Essay On Misdemeanor Assault When Can Misdemeanor Assault Intensify to Felony? Getting involved in a crime is a serious offense – no matter if it is a minor crime being committed or a major one, each has its own consequences that one must face whenever they decide to commit a bad deed. The government has made mandates and laws protecting the innocent and victims of these crimes and preserve justice in the society. However, if in case a person is involved in any crime of the state, they need to understand their charges and the consequences of each crime will be implemented. Although each state carries its own definition and grounds of charges for each crime committed, but it doesn't imply that the crime will go unpunished. If a person is involved in an assault – especially if that person is the aggressor, it has to be determined if the crime committed is a misdemeanor or felony. The latter carries a more serious charge. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Or simply called, assault is the attempt to commit battery or do bodily harm. This is an act that is made to create fear of injury on a victim. You might be wondering if an actual physical contact is needed to find that a person is guilty of the crime – misdemeanor assault; the fact is, you don't need to. Another thing that is considered as misdemeanor assault is when someone attempts to contact a person and has offensive threats can also lead to an assault charge, even if the act itself if not physically harmful or violent. You need to keep in mind that any harm, or maligning someone, which can make them fear for their life or create fear of injury can be grounds for misdemeanor. • 63. Sexual Assault Interview I interviewed two women and one man about the University of Iowa's efforts with respect to sexual assault on campus. The first person I interviewed was a twenty–one year old woman from England named Gina. Michaela, an eighteen year old female from a small–town Southern Baptist high school, was the second female I interviewed. The only man I interviewed was Matt, a 19 year old male from a mid–sized town. I began by asking each of my interviewees what messages they had heard about sexual assault on the University of Iowa campus and where they had heard these messages. Gina talked about a time in which she saw people walking around with t–shirts on about sexual assault awareness and was reminded of a lesson she had on it in a Global On Iowa ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Our conversations prompted some other questions about the background knowledge they had on sexual assault, and how the University talked about it versus how their prior schools had discussed the subject. It was interesting to get a male point of view on the topic because I, along with a lot of other women on campus, feel like they don't have to deal with the topic of sexual assault as much as we do. Especially with the required attendance of lectures and educationals on the subject for both the University and the Greek Life programs. I felt frustrated at times that we all wanted more information about the sexual assaults that have occurred on campus, but we obviously didn't want to information about the victim to become public knowledge as it is their private business. I would agree with a majority of the responses given to the questions, especially the discussion of the "My Cup is Not My Consent" campaign. As well–intentioned as it was, that campaign is more a joke now, and we don't want to the University of Iowa to be unintentionally promoting rape–jokes. I also think that the men on campus should be required to attend just as many sexual assault seminars as the women do. This issue should be just as much theirs as ours. Perhaps if everyone had a better understanding what to look for in potential sexual assault situations, then there would be less sexual assaults occurring on campus. ... • 65. Sexual Assault In College Essay Sexual assault among college students is a tragic incident that keeps reoccurring. There are three predictors I believe heavily contributes to sexual assault among college students. The first predictor is that an individual is in a college environment that promotes heavy drinking and sexual activity while drinking. I believe this contributes to the chances of someone getting sexual assaulted because college students in this environment might think it's the norm and feel that it is ok because their campus pairs sexual activity with drinking. The consumption of alcohol lowers someone's inhibition to make plausible decisions. Similarly, if a person is younger age and lower year in school that is one predictor for sexual assault to occur. Younger age and underclassmen risk being taken advance of on college campuses. They can be easily lied or fooled to by upperclassmen, especially in a relationship. Upperclassmen might convince the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A female that does not act out traditional gender role is more likely to engage in more masculine activities. This individual might view themselves as always in charge of every situation. Therefore, they are more aggressive and power–oriented. The aggressive and power–oriented female might take advantage of those who have little power. Lastly, a female that is low agreeableness is not able to come to a comprise with other people. They might want things to be done their way and not the other way around. Whereas, being high in conscientiousness and extraversion might result in that person going out more. • 67. Sexual Assault On Campus Sexual Assault on Campus "Among undergraduate students, 23.1% of females and 5.4% of males experience rape or sexual assault" (RAINN). Rape is a threat virtually anywhere people go, but no place has a higher risk for sexual assault than college campuses. However, many of these occurrences go without penalties against the attacker, and even more are not reported at all. The lack of consequences for the accused indirectly suggests that rape and other forms of sexual assault are allowable and create further problems for the victims of the horrendous actions. Harsher punishments need to be given out for sexual assault on campus, as the current rulings are biased and immoral. One of the most recent, and famous, cases of sexual assault on campus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the most influential of these are the affirmative consent laws. These laws are defined as "the choice of some schools to require the presence of ongoing agreement, not just the absence of refusal, in sexual encounters" (Boyd). The presence of affirmative consent laws would greatly help the victims in their cases, as without confirmation that the attacked was consensual throughout the entirety of the incident, the accused would be unable to be let off without some form of punishment. Despite this, the laws are currently not enforced in the majority of campuses, leaving victims susceptible to unfair judgments that are in favor of the accused, as rape is often unreasonably viewed as being acceptable if the person had never objected, even if they had not given consent. Additionally, even if they state that they protested the actions, numerous people can also claim that they are lying. In the case of people that had been drunk, unconscious, or otherwise unable to give a logical or coherent answer when being attacked, the blame will often be put on them, despite the obvious horrendous acts of the attacker. Moreover, laws stating the severity of these crimes and how harsh the punishments should be are often overlooked, or not fully enforced, like the affirmative consent laws. In the aforementioned case of Brock Turner, his sentencing was particularly light, even for someone who received some form of sentence, as he faced a maximum of fourteen years in prison, while the prosecutors asked for at least six years (Cleary). The lack of punishments given to sexual predators will go on to further harm the attacked and give the impression that there is nothing wrong with sexual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Assault On Campuses Over the past decade, sexual assault on college campuses has been overlooked due to failed communication from the victims of the attack, which also allowed many schools around the world to become oblivious to the epidemic. A survey commissioned by the "Association of American Universities" brought forth results which were released in September 2015, stating that more than 27.2 % of female college seniors reported having experienced some form of unwanted sexual contact entering college. The dynamics of college life seems to fuel the problem; many are abused while they are under the influence of drugs or otherwise incapacitated. Most victims are assaulted By someone they know. Husbands, former partners, and even friends. Victims of sexual assault survivors often suffer from a wide range of physical and mental health problems such as PTSD, Depression, Chronic pain, anxiety and also eating disorders. They are more ... Many studies have calculated the economic costs of rape, counting for medical and victim services, loss of productivity, decreased the quality of life, and law enforcement resources. Each used a slightly different methodology, but all found the cost to be significant: ranging from 87,000to 240,776 per rape. Arrest rates of sexual assault cases have dropped according to the "National Crime Victimization" survey roughly around 12% of the 283,200 annual rape or sexual assault victimization between 2005–2010 resulted in an arrest at the scene or during a follow–up investigation. Many elements come into play causing little arrests rates, and theses cases can be demanding to investigate. Still, research shows that some police officers still believe certain rape myths " many women falsely claim rape to get attention " which may account for the low rates. Sexual assault cases can also be difficult to investigate because of the effects of the trauma itself. Victims of rape and sexual assault often have difficulty remembering the ... • 71. Sexual Assaults On Campus Campuses Most college campuses have no reports of sexual assaults on campus. This statistic is very inaccurate. The current statistics are that 9% of campuses report that rapes have happened on campus and the other 91% state that there has never been a rape on or around campus. Those estimated numbers seem hard to believe. Especially with cases such as the victim of the Stanford Rapist Brock Turner . After a year of practically living in hell. Turner's victim had to face him in court on trial. Turner and his defendant team tried to minimize the seriousness of the situation by stating that the accused and the victim were under the influence of alcohol. Turner alleged could not be responsibility for his actions because of the accused state of confusion to whether it was content or not. A year after his original testimony Turner went on to say that it was indeed consensual and that the victim enjoyed it. The victim asked to give a statement directionally to her accuser. In this statement she described the events that lead up to the assault. The victim's sister was home from school for the weekend and they were having dinner with their parents. The sister had plans to attend a frat party with her friends, however , the woman originally was going to stay home and watch tv. The plans changed when she had decided to go along seeing her sister was home and she wanted to enjoy time with her. I felt even more betrayed when they failed me and then refused to acknowledge my earnest desires and pleas for them to evaluate what was happening to me" said Emma Sulkowicz, a student at Columbia University who was sexually assaulted and protested the lack of punishment the man who attacked her received by carrying around a 50 pound mattress, of her frustrations and disappointments towards her university (qtd. in Kim). The FBI says that rape is the second most serious crime, after murder (Mantel). Sadly, about twenty to twenty five percent of women will experience some form of sexual assault during the time ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Prosecutors and police officers may be less likely to believe victims if they have no signs of physical abuse like cuts, bruises, or scrapes, or if they have known their attackers for a long time (Hilgenkamp 163). Victims often feel ashamed and humiliated for bringing their experiences forward and become frustrated and furtherly emotionally damaged (Hilgenkamp 163). Dealing with sexual assault cases differently based on the victim's state and story is unfair to the survivor and will only further hurt someone who has already suffered through a traumatic ordeal since it causes them feel as though they are not being listened to or heard. In addition to investigations that are often biased and poorly conducted, the number of convictions made in sexual assault cases is astonishingly small. A few years ago, "The Chicago Tribune published the results of a study involving 171 campus sex complaints at six Midwestern universities. Twelve of the accused perpetrators were arrested, and only four were convicted" (Hedelman and Brown). Due to the low conviction rates, many women feel as though their allegations of having been sexually assaulted are not being taken seriously or even acknowledged (Hedelman and Brown). Unfortunately, sexual assault is a popular crime on college campuses, but when victims bring their stories forward to law enforcers, they are not taken seriously and severe punishments are rarely given to assaulters, which further harms people who have already been wrongly treated. Police and investigators have to change the ways in which they deal with sexual assault cases because investigations are unfairly biased and are usually so inaccurately conducted that most offenders ... • 75. Second-Degree Assault In Colorado Sometimes, people in Colorado may get into arguments that become physical. Those who are involved in physical altercations with others may be charged with assault, which is a serious criminal offense. State law establishes three types of assault offenses of varying severities – third degree, second degree and first degree. Assault in the third degree is the least severe of the assault variations. This type of assault occurs when people recklessly or knowingly cause injury to others. Accidently or negligently injuring a person with a deadly weapon also constitutes third degree assault, according to the Boulder County Bar Association. • 77. Assault On Campus How Should Sexual Assaults On–Campus Be Handled? When congress passed the gender–equality law known as Title IX (1972) more than 40 years ago, no one expected it to make colleges responsible for handling sexual assault. Title IX was a "stealth law" aimed at helping women get through the doors of higher education and is now being interpreted to require colleges to investigate and resolve students reports of rape, determining whether their classmates are responsible for assault and, if so, what the punishment should be. (Wilson, Paragraph 1–2) The term Sexual Assault was defined by the district as any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. With that definition, the term on campus was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... McCaskill, who is organizing the three roundtables through her Subcommittee on Financial & Contracting Oversight, is teaming up with Senators Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut to better understand how colleges and universities handle sexual assaults on campus, as the Senators consider legislative solutions. Participating in the roundtables will be current or former student survivors, campus safety and sexual assault experts, sex crimes prosecutors, university law enforcement, victim advocacy and response organizations, and university administrators. "These roundtables are the next step in our in–depth look at the practices our campus communities have in place to protect students and bring perpetrators to justice and how we can fix, strengthen and enforce them," said McCaskill, a former courtroom prosecutor of sex crimes. "It's clear we have a lot of work to do to tackle the systemic issues that prevent victims from reporting these crimes, that prevent schools from effectively protecting these survivors, and prevent clear and proper enforcement of federal law. These meetings will help us understand, from those who know best, what more we can do for students, administrators, and law enforcement to give them the tools they need to curb this epidemic. (McCaskill, Paragraph 4)" With all of this happening many procedures have been suggested and are all getting tested out. "The consequences of sexual assault are potentially very serious.
