Terpenoids shows biological activity like
insecticidal,anthelmintic and antiseptic action thus
useful in pharmacy.
01 INTRODUCTION
Most of the terpenoids are colourless fragnant liquids
which are lighter than water & volatile with steam.
All are soluble in organic solvent & usually insoluble
In water .most of them are optically active.

Terpenoids are the phyto constituent which are
derived from two or more isoprene molecules.
The molecular formula of isoprene molecule

Name of terpenoids
1.Monoterpenoids
2.Sesquiterpenoids
3.Diterpenoids
4.Triterpinoids
5.Polyterpenoids
1.Monoterpenoids
They are isomeric substances having molecular .They are optically
active. They are also known as C-10 compound.
e.g.
2.Sesquiterpenoids
They are known as C-15 compound because they have molecular formula
...........They are optically active & are found in highest boiling point fraction
of volatile oil e.g.
Sr.No. Constituent Drugs
1 Caryophyllene Clove, copaiba
2 Santalene Sandel woo
3 Bisobolene Lemon oil
4 Cadinene Lemon oil
5 Gossypol Cotton plant
3.Diterpenoids
They are known as C-20 compound because they have molecular formula
e.g.
4.Triterpenoids
They are also known as C-30 compound because having general molecular
formula b...They are found in plants and animal both
e.g.
5.Polyterpenoids
They have molecular formula. ,Where n is number of
isoprene molecules e.g.Solanesol, Tabacco.
Identification test
There are different method for isolation and specific chemical test for
Identification of Individual constituent depending upon the
chemical group to which they belong like alkaloids, glycoside,
saponins , volatile oil,Resins etc.
