How does a Thermal Mass Flow Meter work?
Whenever a fluid of a certain temperature is passed over any substance hotter than the fluid, the heat of the hot substance is taken away because of forced convection by the fluid, and the temperature of that substance drops. This fall in temperature is related to the mass flow of the fluid passing over the substance. If one can measure the amount of heat taken away by the flowing fluid one can calculate the mass flow rate.

Micromachining of flow sensors has accomplished a new goal when it comes to miniaturization. Due to the
scaling in dimensions, power consumption, mass cost, sensitivity and integration with other modules such
as wireless telemetry has improvised to a great extent. Thermal flow sensors find wide applications in
biomedical such as in hydrocephalus shunts and drug delivery systems. Infrared thermal sensing is used for
preclinical diagnosis of breast cancer, for identifying various neurological disorders and for monitoring
various muscular movements. In this paper, various modes of thermal flow sensing and transduction

Power plants release a large amount of water vapor into the
atmosphere through the stack. The flue gas can be a potential
source for obtaining much needed cooling water for a power
plant. If a power plant could recover and reuse a portion of this
moisture, it could reduce its total cooling water intake
requirement. One of the most practical way to recover water
from flue gas is to use a condensing heat exchanger. The power
plant could also recover latent heat due to condensation as well
as sensible heat due to lowering the flue gas exit temperature.
Additionally, harmful acids released from the stack can be

Condensation of vapors in flue gas is a complicated
phenomenon since heat and mass transfer of water vapor and
various acids simultaneously occur in the presence of noncondensable
gases such as nitrogen and oxygen. Design of a
condenser depends on the knowledge and understanding of the
heat and mass transfer processes. A computer program for
numerical simulations of water (H2O) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
condensation in a flue gas condensing heat exchanger was
developed using MATLAB. Governing equations based on
mass and energy balances for the system were derived to
predict variables such as flue gas exit temperature, cooling
water outlet temperature, mole fraction and condensation rates
of water and sulfuric acid vapors. The equations were solved
using an iterative solution technique with calculations of heat
and mass transfer coefficients and physical properties.

measurement with a change in voltage. As temperature goes up,
the output voltage of the thermocouple rises.

The word Thermistors is a combination of thermal
and resistor. Thermistors are made up of mixture of
metallic oxides, pressed into wafers and then cut to
chip size. A thermistor is a type of resistor whose
electrical resistance varies with changes in
temperature.

1. Negative Temperature Co-efficient (NTC):
Decrease resistance as the temperature increases.
2. Positive Temperature Co-efficient (PTC): PTC has
high positive temperature coefficient, which

Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD), also called

specified period of time. Flow rate refers as a velocity
of the fluid or how fast fluid moves. A flow meter (or
flow sensor) is an instrument used to measure linear,
nonlinear, volumetric flow rate of a liquid or a gas.

20. Orifice Plate
The liquid or gas whose flow rate is to be determined is
passed through the orifice plate. This creates a pressure
drop across the orifice plate which varies with the flow
rate, resulting in a differential pressure between the outlet
and inlet pressure. This pressure drop is measured and is
used to calculate the flow rate of the fluid or gas.
22. Vortex Meters
The vortex meter is a flow meter which can be used
for metering, measurement and control of most steam,
gas and liquid flow for a very unique medium
versatility.
Applications:
Water and gas, but one of
the most common is for
steam flow measurement.
23. Pitot Tube
The pitot tube installed in the flow stream
measures the direct pressure at the contact pitot
tube hole and a second measurement is required,
being of static pressure. The difference between
the two measurements gives a value for dynamic
pressure.

It is widely used to determine the airspeed of
an aircraft

25. Flow Nozzle
When a flow nozzle is placed in a pipe carrying whose
rate of flow is to be measured, the flow nozzle causes
a pressure drop which varies with the flow rate. This
pressure drop is measured using a differential pressure
sensor and when calibrated this pressure becomes a
measure of flow rate.
26. Magnetic Flow Meter
The measuring principle is based on “Faraday’s Law of
induction. “When a conductor moves in the magnetic field,
it induces voltages that are perpendicular to the magnetic
field and direction of flow. The magnetic flow meter is a
volumetric flow metering device. The magnetic flow meter
is designed to measure the value of the voltage induced
when a conductive fluid passes through the body of the
meter (magnetic field).
28. Turbine Flow Meters
Turbine flow meters use the mechanical energy of the
liquid to rotate a rotor within the flow stream. The
rotational speed is directly proportional to the velocity
of the fluid traveling through the meter. These meters
are used in multiple industries to reliably measure
liquids, gases and vapors.
