Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- 1. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
- 2. Wordpress.com I used this wordpress blog to record my progress, and share it with the public to gain feedback. However, it proved not the most useful place to gain feedback.
- 3. Surveymonkey.com I gained more feedback by creating online questionairres on surveymonkey.com. This helped my gain different opinions in a sae and anonymous place. When anonymous like this, people will be more honest about their opinions, as they do not fear they shall be judged.
- 4. Other blogging websites I used other blogging websites such as tumblr.com and twitter.com to gather people within my target audience, and ask them to volunteer to carry out my surveys.
- 5. Photoshop I used the image editing software photoshop to create my posters and magazine covers. It is a simple and effective way to create professional looking images, and has been invaluable to my progress.
- 6. Cyber link powerdirector I used this video editing software to edit my actual trailer, as it appeared to have the effects and abilities I needed. However, my main problem when creating this trailer was my software. I discovered that PowerDirector cannot cope with too much activity, and repeatedly crashed throughout the course of the creation of my trailers, not saving my work when it did. Reading online, I discover that this is a common problem with this software. I have learnt that next time, I should always do the research and read into what I am thinking of buying, and trust the reviews, not the advertisements.
- 7. Slideshare Finally, I used this website to host my evaluations in a fun and engaging way, to easily help people understand the progress I made.
