This document describes the process of creating trailers for a media project. It discusses drafting multiple trailers, refining visual effects, getting feedback, and addressing issues with distinct voices and comedy. The final draft of a trailer was inspired by Monty Python and used self-deprecating humor, upbeat music, and a soft focus effect to convey romance, developing conventions of film trailers.

forms and conventions of
real media projects?

2.  I decided to edit my trailers on Cyberlink
PowerDirector 12, as from the descriptions, I felt
this would be a good software. However, this
software created many problems for me, as I
shall go into later.

3. First Draft
 I first decided to create a teaser trailer, short, and not
giving away any plot points, but enough to make the
viewer want to watch more.
 Whilst I felt that the first teaser trailer was effective, I felt
the use of effects looked a little immature, so for my
second draft, I refined it further.

 I tried again to create a security camera feel using a variety of effects.
 I felt this shot in particular was successful.

5. Second Draft
 I showed the teaser trailers to various people, and they were
greeted with positive feedback.
 One major problem I have with these teaser trailers is the fact
that the aliens and the opening narration are both voiced by
the same person, and I do not feel there is enough distinction
between them.
 Had I more time, I would have replaced the voiceover of the
alien with another I did have recorded by the same person I
asked to record my second opening narration.

6. Final Draft
 Another major problem I had with the teaser trailers was
that they did not get across the comedy aspect
enough.
 To counter this, I decided to make a third trailer, heavily
inspired by the Monty Python and the Holy Grail trailer.

7. Final Draft
 The opening narration I used on this trailer was just
recorded as a joke by my voice actor alongside several
more serious renditions of the same narration, but I felt I
wanted to go as crazy as possible and get every laugh I
could, so I decided to use it.
 The soundtrack I used for this trailer was bouncy, loud,
and upbeat, in contrast to the more gloomy, ambient
music used on the teaser trailers.

8. Final Draft
 I also used self-deprecating humour within title cards
throughout the trailer, elements borrowed form some of
the trailers I analysed.

9. Final Draft
 To create a romantic feel, I used a soft focus effect on all ‘romance’
scenes, as this is an effect commonly use in traditional science fictions,
most notably Star Trek, in moments with a romantic feel to them.
