2.  To gain feedback for my trailer, I gathered a focus group, and
asked them each in turn a few questions on a questionnaire:

3. What do you think of the trailer?
 It was funny.
 It was effective because it was put together in a way that
was intriguing.
 Slightly confusing, a really strange mix of different elements.
 Silly, a bit unsure of itself.

4. What did you find effective?
 The music – it made it upbeat.
 Clips that seemed like out-takes – made it seem a cute funny film
 The quick pace and sense of action created by the scenes of
characters always running about or doing something, the light hearted
choice of music which set the relaxed tone.
 The mixing together of the very different parts to it- the CGI planet, the
live action scenes, the captions. The use of funny scenes to get straight
to the tone of the film.

5. Is the trailer appropriate to the genre
of science fiction comedy?
 It hit the comedy, but it needs a tad more aliens.
 Yes.
 The comedy aspect is strongly represented in the trailer, but this time the sci-fi elements don’t really
come across, only that it’s got an alien in it.
 Apart from the CGI planet, there aren’t really a lot of sci-fi things in the trailer. I don’t know if it gets
across that the main character is an alien, and not a mutant superhero or something.

6. Would you want to see the film based
on this trailer?
 Yeah, it looks quite funny.
 Yes.
 Probably not. It seems to have a bit of an identity crisis when fitting the
sci-fi and comedy aspects together.
 I’m really not sure. The weird hesitant and apologetic captions suggest
the makers of the film don’t think it’s that good. I might give it a go- there
are lots of unusual elements you wouldn’t find anywhere else, like the
romance plotline.

7. What could be improved?
 More talking.
 Sound and a steadier tripod.
 Scenes in the trailer of a more sci-fi nature, such as making it clear the main
character is an alien, and not just someone with paint on their face. More
dialogue in the trailer, such as letting the audience hear some of the jokes
and humorous scenes.
 The captions need to be more definite that this is a film we should go and
see. Also the plot needs to be explained- is there a villain? What climax are
we working towards? Is there some kind of danger? And what the heck
does a blue rose have to do with anything?

8. Do the trailer, poster, and magazine
cover all feel they are for the same
film?
 Yes, because you see characters from the film.
 Yes, because the magazine cover links to imagery from the trailer, and the
poster centres in the cloak, which acts as a motif for the film.
 Not really. Particularly regarding the main character, where we never get a
chance to find out who they are, other than being an alien. The memorable
image from the poster never makes it into the trailer, as the character almost
always has their hood down or is running around, so there is no single icon to
join everything together.
 The magazine and the trailer, certainly, since they both focus on the
relationship between the two characters as the most important part of the film,
but the poster has just one of the main characters standing on her own. On the
whole, they both definitely look like they’re all from the same film, but don’t
really all give off the same vibe, like they all consider different things to be the
central part of the plot.

9.  This has helped me to learn that if I was to undertake to
project again, the things I most need to work on are my
dialogue scenes, and my handling of two different
genres at once. However, the feedback was largely
positive, and so I am not disappointed.
