Instagram has become one of the most popular social media platforms, allowing people to share photos, videos, and stories with their followers. Sometimes, though, you might want to view someone's story without them knowing.
Gen Z and the marketplaces - let's translate their needsLaura Szabó
The product workshop focused on exploring the requirements of Generation Z in relation to marketplace dynamics. We delved into their specific needs, examined the specifics in their shopping preferences, and analyzed their preferred methods for accessing information and making purchases within a marketplace. Through the study of real-life cases , we tried to gain valuable insights into enhancing the marketplace experience for Generation Z.
The workshop was held on the DMA Conference in Vienna June 2024.
1. Evaluation
Q 1. How do you integrate technologies –
software, hardware and online in this project?
2. - Internet technologies
1. Wordpress.com
2. Youtube.com
3. Social Networking – Facebook and Twitter
4. Nationalgeographic.com
5. Online software – prezi, slideshare
6. Online software – Email, surveymonkey
- Other Technology Mediums
1. Production Equipment –tripod, camera
2. Premier Pro
3. Offline software – Microsoft powerpoint
3. WordPress
I believe that this blogging platform, wordpress.com would be the perfect medium to support my production process. I was
initially drawn to WordPress as it was easy to use and could help me develop a successful blog .
1. It offers a wide variety of layouts and themes. I chose the modern business them as its clear and professional which I believe
increases the quality of my blog. Similarly, it allowed me to create a menu, categorising the key aspects of the production
process. This helped me in every aspect of production as it helped me remain organised, I identified any gaps in relation to
posts, and allowed me to link posts together which gives the viewers the ability to explore the blog with ease. I feel that this
also improved the overall quality of my blog.
2. WordPress also allows many different mediums to be embedded and linked to the blog. This was particularly useful for the
research and planning stages as it allowed me to display the information in varied and interesting ways, such as through the
use of SlideShare and Prezi. This was also vital for the post production stage for both the main and ancillary tasks as I was able
to easily embed YouTube videos to demonstrate decision making process while editing. This also allowed me to reflect on my
own work, develop and explain why I made certain decisions and build on them as the process went on. I feel that I utilised
these aspects of the website much more so than the foundation production as I really explored what different types of media
could be incorporated to improve the quality of the blog in creativity and varied in relation to digital technologies.
3. Additionally, the website was essential in gaining feedback throughout the process. It allows my teachers post
comments on individual blog posts to give comments on how to improve them, which I found very helpful. I was also able to
gather feedback from other media students on my production as well as the blog being public allowing anyone to comment on
my work
4. YouTube, as a video sharing platform was useful in every stage of production
1. I found it extremely useful source when researching about other documentaries to study the conventions, forms and gather
information that could be useful to my project. I found several renowned documentary films, such as FLOW: FOR THE LOVE
OF WATER by Salina and TAPPED directed by Stephanie Soechtig which was produced by Atlas Films. Other documentaries I
watched were from National Geographic's YouTube channel . My favourite ones were the National geographic two part series
called chasing rivers. The fact that I was able to easily access them gave me a more varied understanding of many different
documentaries. This also gave me the chance to provide a lot of examples and analyse and break down each documentary.
2. I also felt YouTube was vital when I was gathering audience feedback. The platform allowed me to upload various edits from
my documentary to gather comments and build on my work during the editing process. I feel that this played a key role in
determining the success of my product and lead to improved quality. This also gave easy access to a wide variety of
comments from individual's on what I achieved and what could have been improved upon seeing the final edit. I could also
share these comments on WordPress which I felt also added to the media variety on my blog.
3. Additionally, I have used YouTube to upload some of my evaluation pieces to vary each answer in form.
5. 1. National Geographic's two main sources of social media marketing is snapchat and Instagram. With a whooping 80 million
followers on Instagram their photographers are some of the most incredible visual storytellers on the planet, so it makes
sense to let them take the reins and tell their stories themselves. National Geographic's plan with their social media
program is to get really good at meeting users wants and need. They have around 350 million followers across social
media platforms, 25 million people who spend time on their website every month and over 60% of which on mobile.
National Geographic has an impressive social media story to tell, not least because it can claim number one media brand
on Instagram, but its snapchat is already driving revenue for the business. Deiaco- Lohr said this approach and the strong
link to social issues and purpose appeals to younger audience, which is helping to drive its huge scale on new platforms
such as snapchat and Instagram. As a result I decided to use these two social media platforms to advertise my
documentary to my peers and other common people
2. I have used these websites in the evaluation stage to advertise both my documentary and ancillary tasks in addition to
inviting individuals to comment on their quality. I felt that this was an easy and quick way of gaining feedback from a large
audience of people. Upon reflection of AS coursework, I feel that this research and application of social media was missing
which could have decreased the quality of the blog and audience feedback. I feel that this has been greatly improved in
the advanced production work.
Social Network
6. Online software – Prezi, SlideShare
I found online presenting software, such as the two examples above which were very useful for my blog. I
thought that varying how much my written work was presented in the blog made my blog more interesting
to read. These 2 software were modern and exciting to look at. I feel that these types of softwares improve
the overall quality of my blog and make it more professional. I also believe that this has advanced my
coursework from the foundation production as I have developed many skills from online digital technologies
and have applied them to my own work.
1. Prezi, much like Microsoft powerpoint, can create free interactive presentations that can be very
informative and aesthetically pleasing. I chose this software to present much of my research into the
documentary genre as I felt that it would improve the quality of my blog to have different types of posts. I
also used this for creating a type of storyboard for my production, planning out each section and
including explanations for why I made certain decisions. I also used the platform as a part of my
evaluation and in post production. I really enjoyed using Prezi, Particularly as you could embed images
into the presentation, create interesting backgrounds and control the directions of the presentation to
make it clear but exciting presentations that are relevant to the information.
2. In addition to this, I used SlideShare, which is the platform for this presentation. It allowed me to utilise the
feature of Microsoft Powerpoint and upload and embed onto my blog. I found this an easy and simple
way of creating varied digital media on my blog. Much like Prezi, I chose to use this in the research and
planning stages of my documentary.
7. Online software – Gmail,
Survey Monkey
1. I used Gmail to contact the vice president of National Geographic talking about my ideas. I also used email to
contact different cinemas to inquire about filming opportunities withing the cinema setting. Email was also
useful in my production to keep in contact with teachers for feedback and support at different stages of
production. I also utilised Gmail’s features to use as a quick and easy platform for transferring documents
from one technology to another. For example, when taking photos of notes I have made, it was easy to email
them to myself and have them on my computer to upload to my blog. Email was although the most
forgotten about digital technology as its become such a big part of daily life, played vital part in the
production of my blog.
2. I used survey monkey , a website that can help to create and platform online questionnairs and surveys. I felt
that this would be useful software to use to gather audience feedback, along with gaining comments on
social media. I created two questionnairs, one regarding the opinions on my documentary and things I could
change and one regarding the ancillary tasks. I was able to choose from a variety of question types (multiple
choice, textbox answers etc) and even embed my productions into the survey. This allowed the participants to
immediately comment on the products after viewing. This also allowed me to gather much more specific
responses to different aspects of the prodcuts which was vital for reflection on what was successful and what
could have been improved.
8. Production equipment – DSLR camera, GoPro,
Tripod, Phone
I used a Canon 600D dslr camera to record my footage for my production. I found this easy to use as I have previously used
it for other purposes and it also provided high quality footage, making my production seem more professional. I was fairly
familiar with the type of camera as I used the same one in the foundation portfolio and therefore used the skills I learned last
year. However I also explored the features of the camera much more in production, which I think has improved my
production from the AS task. For example I learned I could manually adjust the brightness (iso) and several other features
that were useful to capture evidence of filming and screenshots to support my written work on the blog. I also used a tripod
to film the majority of my footage with the exception of purposeful point of view shots which were handheld. I found that
filming my interviews could have improved if I used like two cameras to capture several angles for more varied shots,
however I worked entirely by myself, it was fairly difficult to attempt to operate two sets of equipment and therefore I chose
to focus on the one.
Unfortunately I was unable to use professional microphones to record sound and therefore used my phone to record and
match audio separately during the editing process. The phone captured all external noises and quality was not very superior
resulting in slightly muffled voices which are to be corrected in post production. Overall I believe the sound was satisfactory
but could have been improved with the use of professional microphones.
I used my own dslr camera to take a photograph for my poster for my ancillary tasks. I felt that this itself would provide a
very high quality image as it was mainly made for professional photography.
9. Adobe Premier Pro CS6
I feel like adobe premier pro is a very well known software used by most filmmakers
and this could give me the feel of being professional. This software contained a wide
range of editing tools that helped me create smooth transitions while also being
able to edit the sounds and colour correct all in one software making it so much
easier for a beginner. Although the software crashed a few times I felt it was the
most appropriate for the type of production I was making.
For my AS level I chose to do a magazine as a result using this software was
completely new to me. I used YouTube to learn the basic skills and learnt some
features of the software's through other media students who have been using this
software. The most commonly used tool through this project would be the trimming
tool to finish shots and ensure that the cut was smooth. I also expanded on my
knowledge of including titles; I learned how to overlap them on the actual footage
rather than against a plain background. This was particularly important as I needed
to include the name and qualifications of my expert interviewees. I also
experimented with the speed and timing of clips to create slow mo. and time lapse
to make my documentary more interesting. Similarly I explored tools that I could use
to enhance the soundtrack and practised distorting some of my music and sound
10. Offline software – Microsoft Powerpoint,
Photoshop, screen recorder
I found offline software very useful during the production process, particularly to increase the quality of
my blog by varying content even more so.
1. PowerPoint was useful during the research and planning stage to present my information in a more
interesting way. It is also fairly interactive mode that allowed me to embed my presentation onto
the blog for the viewer to see. I felt that although PowerPoint was very easy to use and effective
when on the blog, Prezi had many more features which made the information even more exciting
to view.
2. I used Photoshop to edit and create my poster for the ancillary task. I found the software a little
difficult to use as it has many complex tools but towards the end of my project I did learn about
most of them. I am very happy with how my poster turned out as it took a lot of time and effort to
learn the skills and apply them here.
3. I also used ScreenRecorder;software that allowed me to film my laptop screen while recording my
voiceover. I found this particularly useful when presenting presentation and in my evaluation as I
was able to elaborate on what I had written and explain my view points.
