Team
 A team is a small group of people with complementary skills,
who work actively together to achieve a common purpose for
which they hold themselves collectively accountable.
 Teams are one of the major forces behind revolutionary
changes in contemporary organizations.
 In other words, when one person cannot accomplish a job
alone and several individuals must cooperate to fulfill a
mission, you need a team. The better the cooperation,
communication, and coordination among team members, the
more efficient the team.
 “ A team is a number of persons associated together in work
or activity: as a group on one side (as in football or debate).”
Types of team
 Functional or departmental team- it is a group of
people from the same work area or department who meet
on a regular basis to analyze customer needs, solve
problems, provide member with support, promote
continuous improvement and share information.
 Cross-functional team- Individuals from different
areas come and work together for a common objective to
form a cross functional team. In such teams, people from
different areas, interests and likings join hands to come
out with a unique idea to successfully complete a task.
Types of team cont..
 Self Managed Teams - Self Managed Teams
consist of individuals who work together again for a
common purpose but without the supervision of any
leader.
 Every individual is accountable for his individual performance.
 must respect each other and should never loose focus on their
target.
 No leader is appointed and the team members have to take their
own responsibility.
 Individuals take the initiative on their own and are their own
guides and mentors.
Stages of team development
 There are five stages of team development:
 Stage 1: Forming
 Group members may be anxious and adopt wait-and-see
attitude. formal towards each other.
 no clear idea of goals or expectations. Besides, they may not
be sure why they are there.
 This is the stage where the team needs to write its own charter
or mission statement as well as clarify goals.
 Team members will get to know each other doing non-conflict
laden task. This builds the commitment towards one larger
goal.
 Members are in process of knowing each other and getting at
ease with them.
Stages of team development cont..
 Stage 2: Storming
 During this stage, team members are eager to get going.
 Conflict can arise as people tend to bring different ideas
of how to accomplish goals. At this time, they notice
differences rather than similarities.
 This leads to some members dropping out mentally or
physically.
 Tensions will increase. So recognizing and publicly
acknowledging accomplishments also become important.
 Thus, during the storming stage, the team members
begin showing their actual styles. They start getting
impatient.
Stages of team development cont..
 Stage 3: Norming
 This stage is when people begin to recognize ways in
which they are alike.
 They tend to get more social and may forget their focus
in favor of having a good time. This is the time to help
with training if applicable. It becomes important to
encourage them in order to feel comfortable with each
other and with systems. Also, the group needs to stay
focused on goal.
 Thus, during the norming stage, there is conflict
resolution. There is greater involvement of team
members.
 There is a greater “we” feeling rather than “I” feeling.
Stages of team development cont..
 Stage 4: Performing
 This stage is when team members are trained, competent, as
well as able to do their own problem-solving.
 The team is mature now. The members understand their roles
and responsibilities. They would require more input in
processes.
 The members would be self-motivated as well as self-trained.
Thus, their efforts need to be recognised. Growth has to be
encouraged. This is done by giving new challenges to the
team.
 Thus, teams at the stage of performing are self-controlling,
practical, loyal as well as productive. Focus is there on both
performance as well as production.
Stages of team development cont..
 Stage-5:Adjourning
 The team has completed the task at this stage.
 Now the team is disengaged from the task.
 It is also known as deforming and mourning.
Building an Effective Team
 Clarify the common goals and purposes
 Clarify each person’s role in achieving the common
purpose.
 Put team members in touch with the people who use
what they do.
 Pay attention to conflicts when they arise.
 Work out ways to resolve conflicts.
 Make sure team members interact at meetings.
 Allow team members to have input into their jobs.
Building an Effective Team cont..
 Make sure there is room for minority or unpopular
views.
 Appraise and reward the team as a whole.
 Communicate team successes.
Team Work
 The sum of the efforts undertaken by each team
member for the achievement of the team’s objective
is called team work. In other words, team work is the
backbone of any team.
 Every member in a team has to perform and
contribute in his best possible way to achieve a
common predefined goal. Individual performances
do not count in a team and it is the collective
performance of the team workers which matters the
most.
Advantages of team
 Tasks are accomplished at a faster pace when it is done
by a team rather than an individual.
 There is always a healthy competition among the team
members.
 Team members can also gain from each other.
 Potential for greater work force flexibility with cross
training
 New approaches to task may be discovered.
 Communication and information exchange may be
facilitated and increased.
 Team commitment may stimulate performance and
attendance.
Leading team
 A team leader plays an important role in guiding the
team members and motivating them to stay focused.
 suggestions should be invited from one and all and issues must
be discussed on an open forum.
 support one and all equally.
 Motivate them so that they perform even better the next time.
 Encourage the team members to help each other
 Be a mentor to your team members.
 The team leader should take the initiative of bringing the team
members closer.
Team membership
 A team member must have certain qualities in him
so that he is not only able to work in a team but also
deliver results and grow both professionally and
personally. These are:
 An individual should be a good communicator to be a good
team member.
 One has to be reliable and trustworthy to survive in a team.
 a good listener
 Positive attitude
 Participate in discussions
 One has to be patient enough to work in a team.
