What is TCP/IP?
• TCP/IP: Transmission Control Protocol/
Internet Protocol
• Allows computer to communicate & share
resources on network.
• TCP/IP is not a single protocol , It is a family of
protocol.
• It is the 1st set of protocol used in internet.

History of TCP/IP
• Work on TCP/IP is started in 1970s.
• Funded by US military.
• IT started with very small network called
ARPA(advance research project agency ). And
slowly came to known as ARPANET.
• It is the 1st network started to use TCP.

Gradually it become so widely accepted
technology in modern network so in today
world internet, entirely depend on TCP.
 Used as a standard
• To bridge the gap between non compatible
platform.
• All computer connected to internet
understand TCP/IP.

• IP transport datagram from source to destination
node.
• Responsible for routing the packet.
• Breaks a packet into smaller packets if required.
IP provide Unreliable service.
– Packet may be lost in transmit.
– Packet may arrive out of order.
– Duplicate packet may be generated.

Transmission Control Protocol
• TCP provides a connection-oriented, reliable
service.
• Split a message into packet.
• Reassemble packet at destination.
• Resend packet that were lost in transmit.
• Error control is done by TCP.

UDP User Datagram Protocol
• UDP provides a connectionless, unreliable
service for sending datagram.
• Simpler and faster than TCP.
• Never split data into multiple packets.
• Does not care about error control.
• UDP uses ports to provide communication
services to individual processes.

• Trivial file protocol (TFTP) .
• TFTP client transfers 200 byte of data.
• 4 byte of TFTP header gets added.

– unreliable datagram delivery between hosts.
• UDP: transport layer protocol
– unreliable datagram delivery between processes.

  • 2. What is TCP/IP? • TCP/IP: Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol • Allows computer to communicate & share resources on network. • TCP/IP is not a single protocol , It is a family of protocol. • It is the 1st set of protocol used in internet. 2
  • 3. History of TCP/IP • Work on TCP/IP is started in 1970s. • Funded by US military. • IT started with very small network called ARPA(advance research project agency ). And slowly came to known as ARPANET. • It is the 1st network started to use TCP. 3
  • 4. TCP/IP Gradually it become so widely accepted technology in modern network so in today world internet, entirely depend on TCP.  Used as a standard • To bridge the gap between non compatible platform. • All computer connected to internet understand TCP/IP. 4

  • 9. IP • IP transport datagram from source to destination node. • Responsible for routing the packet. • Breaks a packet into smaller packets if required. IP provide Unreliable service. – Packet may be lost in transmit. – Packet may arrive out of order. – Duplicate packet may be generated. 9

  • 11. TCP Transmission Control Protocol • TCP provides a connection-oriented, reliable service. • Split a message into packet. • Reassemble packet at destination. • Resend packet that were lost in transmit. • Error control is done by TCP. 11

  • 13. UDP User Datagram Protocol • UDP provides a connectionless, unreliable service for sending datagram. • Simpler and faster than TCP. • Never split data into multiple packets. • Does not care about error control. • UDP uses ports to provide communication services to individual processes. 13
