This is Tom's answer to question 1 of the evaluation for our music magazine. The question is, "In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge codes and conventions of real media products?".
2. CONVENTIONS OF A FRONT COVER
I fount that for a front cover it is conventional for the masthead to be
in the biggest and boldest font unlike all the cover lines that are also
on the front cover. As they want the masthead to stand out most as it
is the main thing the target audience look for.
There is only one main image which is usually of the whoever the
main cover story is about such as a specific artist or band, there is
never more than one image on the front cover of the rolling stones
magazine, this is so that it looks more professional and less messy.
The text for the front cover is both serif and san serif most of the
time this is because they are both feminine and masculine and the
magazine is targeted to both genders, so this helps it to be appealing
to the target audience.
3. CONVENTIONS FOR THE
CONTENTS PAGE
In the contents pages that I have looked at it is conventional for all
the images to be on the left hand side of the page and the text on the
right hand side of the page. This is how Rolling stones magazine
tends to lay their contents page out as it makes the page look
organised and not scruffy or childish. This is classed as their mode of
address. They also always have RS and the issue number this is also
part of their mode of address. This is what the audience look for in
the magazine as this is what also appeals to the target audience.
They also mainly use similar colours such as white, blacks and red it
rarely uses bright and bolds colours.
4. CONVENTIONS OF A DOUBLE-PAGE
SPREAD
It is conventional for a double page spread in the rolling stones
magazine to have one or two main images either in the background
of the double page or one whole side of the double page which is
usually on the left page and the text is on the right side or it is a
smaller image that covers half of one page and then text is
incorporated around it. It is also conventional at the start of the
article to have a kicker at the beginning of the article, this is because
it makes the article stand out more and look more interesting to the
target audience. It is also conventional for the double page spread to
have a picture to show what the article is about such as if it is about
an artist or a band or if it is about a specific story or celebrity this
helps to connote what the article will be about.
