Vibe is a music magazine that predominantly features hip-hop and R&B artists. It was originally created by Quincy Jones but is now published every three months by InterMedia Partners. The target audience is young followers of urban and hip-hop culture. The author likes Vibe's style and layout featuring rappers on the covers looking cool in snapbacks and jewelry that appeals to its target audience. However, the author does not want InterMedia Partners to publish their new hip-hop/R&B magazine because it would compete with Vibe, so Bauer Media is considered a better publisher since they have successful magazines in different genres.
2. I have decided that for my music magazine the sub-genre will be Hip-Hop/R&B. So that I can
learn more about these types of magazines and to help me with my own I have decided to do
some research into the Hip-Hop/R&B music magazine ‘VIBE’ and its publisher.
3. I really like vibes style and layout. The main image on the front of the magazines
appears to be constantly a rapper gazing into the camera looking ‘cool’. The snapback
caps and the jewellery on the front of the covers really suites the style of the music
and its target audience. The audience for this magazine will be younger people and
will want to dress like these rappers. I also like the masthead on these magazines
which always seem to contrast with the background t make it stand out. Using this
technique is something I would certainly use in my magazine.
4. Vibe magazine is a music magazine created by producer Quincy Jones. The magazine
predominantly features R&B and hip-hop music artists. After stopping production and
closing the magazine down in Summer 2009, Vibe was taken over by the private equity
investment fund InterMedia Partners and is now released every three months. The
magazine's target audience is predominantly young followers of urban and Hip-hop culture.
However I do not feel InterMedia Partners is a good publisher for my magazine as my subgenre will be very similar to that of VIBE so sales may be lost from VIBE, making the
publisher in competition with its self. However Bauer media have some already very
successful magazines such as Kerrang, Q and mojo however none of them are the subgenre I have chosen. This shows me they are a very successful publisher and also that they
would be likely to accept my magazine because of its different genre.
