The target audience for my music magazine
will be young people aged 16- 18, I am going
to have to do some research In order to find
out exactly what features I should include in
my music magazine when designing it. The
research I intend to do includes, a
questionnaire + results, conventions,
Proposal, typical reader profile and analysis
of existing music magazines.
The typical reader for my music magazine would be
aged 16. My questionnaire results shows that readers
will be willing to spend money on my music magazine.
I’d assume that the readers of my magazine would
attend a lot of gigs and live events which means the
readers would be open minded about all music. I think
that fashion would be a good way to describe the
readership of my music magazine as looking good is an
important part of the music scene. Also the majority of
readers for my magazine are young, many young people
like to look good and stylish, and I could imagine that
my music magazine readers would shop in places like
Top man and River Island

This tells me that the majority of my target
audience prefer music magazines to come
with free gifts/ promotions in them, this is
helpful because it gives me the chance to add
something to my magazine that my
competition may not have in theirs.

This tells me that the majority of my target
audience read 2 to 4 music magazines a week, this
is useful to me because it gives me a rough idea of
how many copies I could sell to each customer per
week, however I have to take into account that I
have competition so I would be competing against
other music magazine producers to have the target
audience read my magazine.
This tells me that the majority my target
audience think the main image is what
makes a music magazine stand out from
other music magazines the most, this is
helpful because it tells me that I need to
choose my main image very carefully.

This tells me that the majority of my
target audience prefer hip hop the most
out of every other music genre, this is
helpful because I now know what the
most popular type of music genre is so I
can base my music magazine on that
genre to increase the chances of selling
copies.
This tells me that the majority of my target audience
would be willing to pay from 50p - £1.50, this is helpful
information because it gives me a rough idea of how
much I should charge for my magazine which is essential
for my business plan.
Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine
founded by producer Quincy Jones. The
publication predominantly features R&B and hiphop music artists, actors and other entertainers.
Vibe is now issued every-other month with double
covers, with a larger online presence. The
magazine's target demographic is predominantly
young, urban followers of hip-hop culture.
The magazine owed its success to featuring a
broader range of interests than its closest
competitors The Source and XXL which focus more
narrowly on rap music, or the rock & pop-centric
Rolling Stone and Spin.

For my music magazine I am going to create a magazine called “hip & hop”. My favourite music
sub-genre is hip hop so I thought it would be a good idea for my magazine to be focused on hip
hop music as I will be interested in the research involved. I was considering to make my magazine
focused on mainstream pop as a sub-genre but I thought that I personally wouldn't work as hard
on that specific sub-genre and that it may be used by many other people.
As the magazine's sub-genre will be hip hop, I've decided that the cover and the layout will be
funky and fresh as hip hop and the involvement of hip hop usually has a connotation of fresh,
funkiness and excitement.
There will be many conventions involved with my magazine cover to link to the target audience.
For example; my magazine may not have a cheesy smile in the image to relate to a women's
lifestyle magazine but maybe a funky pose linked to the funkiness of hip hop.
My target audience will be young adults aged between 16-18 who are most likely in education.
Independently they would be in social class D or E, by background they'll be C1 or C2 readers as
they'll have enough money to meet the target just not the income.
My magazine will be targeted towards men and women so I will have many things that'll connote
both male and female interests. For example; for my cover image I could take a photo of a female
wearing blue - the blue would connote males.
The market segmentation that my magazine will be targeting will mainly be aspirers and
reformers. They aim for a good life but with their own twist on it.
