Measuring Visual Attentiveness: Eye Tracking on Wearable Devices
An exciting array of new wearable devices are available to consumers, but very few have proven to be useful enough to become a staple of our daily lives. User experience researchers have been able to collect lots of data about usage habits through diary studies and run usability tests to understand if users can use these devices. While informative, these methods are unable to capture the subtle, yet critical behavior of visual attentiveness.
The untapped value of eye tracking for wearables is not necessarily what they are looking at on the device, it is how frequently and how long they spend looking at it. Attendees will learn why visual attentiveness is a key metric to understand the usefulness and usability of wearables.
Leveraging Social Media Call 4

Digital tools offer many advantages over traditional paper methods, but paper is generally preferred for its convenience. Apple’s iPad offers a form factor and interaction model which is more convenient than PCs for some tasks allowing it to challenge paper methods and realize the full benefits of digital tools.
Since April of 2011 I have been substituting paper and PC tasks for iPad tools on many UX activities in my position as an Interaction Designer. I found that the iPad offers a viable alternative for many UX tasks and has become my preferred method for some. Other tasks are more effective using paper or software in a PC environment. This session will summarize these experiences, report survey results of iPad usage by UX professionals and compare the advantages and disadvantages of paper, PCs and the iPad.
iCan iPads in Library Youth Programming

This led to massive passport backlogs and delays by 1999, attracting widespread media attention. Over 400 additional staff were hired and free extensions offered to help address the situation. While targets were eventually met, lessons were identified around testing, contingency planning, capacity management, and communication with the public.

Fitts' Law
- Fitts' law predicts the time it takes to move a pointer to hit a target based on the size and distance of the target, with smaller and more distant targets taking more time to hit.
- The law was originally studied by Paul Fitts in 1954 and has been applied to the design of graphical user interfaces and evaluation of pointing devices.
- Factors like target size, distance, and the properties of the pointing device being used can all be measured and plugged into the Fitts' law equation to predict acquisition times.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Bad UX Research But Were Afraid to...

However, along with these marvels of the information age come weapons of mass distraction. With so many things competing for our attention—and so little time to focus on real work—it’s a wonder we get anything done at all. What does this mean for testers? A common belief is that only focused concentration leads to productive work—and conversely, that distraction causes procrastination and stifles creativity. While it is important that testers find flow and maintain focus, Zeger Van Hese believes that a state of defocus—guilt-free play—can also be helpful in testing. Zeger shares tips, tricks, and tools that have helped him focus and defocus while testing. He explains not only how to benefit from distraction but also how to return to flow and focus when needed. Learn to make the most of these techniques in your testing.

With so many things competing for our attention—and so little time to focus on real work—it’s a wonder we get anything done at all. What does this mean for testers? A common belief is that only focused concentration leads to productive work—and conversely, that distraction causes procrastination and stifles creativity. While it is important that testers find flow and maintain focus, Zeger Van Hese believes that a state of defocus—guilt-free play—can also be helpful in testing. Zeger shares tips, tricks, and tools that have helped him focus and defocus while testing. He explains not only how to benefit from distraction but also how to return to flow and focus when needed. Christian Heilmann is a hacker and geek who is passionate about sharing his passions. He is in Atlanta to help with a Hack Day at Georgia Tech. He discusses the process of hack days - focusing first on an idea, using available data sources and APIs, and creating functional interfaces. I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.

- 18. Interview with an Apptracker user (Male, USA) “I think the main reason was to help diagnose battery issues related to app usage. It was by no means scientific though. I'm also a bit of a sucker for data visualisations and definitely found it cool to see. … It seems accurate to a scary degree sometimes. Sometimes, seeing how often I am using the Sleep Time app, when I sleep kind of dwarfs any other app usage but it's all still useful. I can see what apps I hardly if ever use, and then decide whether or not to uninstall them.”
- 19. Another interview with an Apptracker user (Male, Europe) “I have this err, whats it called, bipolar disease … So every other week I use my phone very much and, the other week I barely touch it. Now, well, theres no curve of how I use it, I see it with the bars and they are like yeah, a little and then they grow in the the wave, Its interesting because I like to find out how my disease works, that err, will help me. Yeah. Because err, I notice when I don’t use my iPhone that much and then I realise that maybe this is a turn, or the other way around.”

- 21. Conclusion • There are some dangers in treating log data as a ‘mirror’ of activity • Let people interpret and make sense of tracked data for themselves. • A research challenge is how to recognise and support the ways in which people make sense of tracked data for themselves.
