External Intervention. A new doctrine of intervention that violates sovereignty known as R2P (Responsibility to Protect) is gaining weight in the rhetoric espoused by the US and other Western nations. Though, very appealing, it can very easily be used as a pretext for military intervention in any country based on a vague and manipulative interpretation of what is increasingly becoming an international norm. Brief on US military interventions - http://academic.evergreen.edu/g/grossmaz/interventions.html US and Russian sponsorship of autocratic regime is a carry over from the Cold War. An example would be the US support for brutal regimes such in South Vietnam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ngo_Dinh_Diem) and many others around the world in hopes of preventing the rise of a communist government. These spheres of influence created carries on today, though for different geopolitical reasons eg. US friendly Arab regimes for oil and US bases in the Middle East, US-Japan Alliance. Similarly with the Russia, they still exert influence over regions where the USSR traditionally maintains influence in and presence. Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) http://www.oic-oci.org/
