This document provides an overview of syphilis, including its causes, transmission, stages, diagnosis, and treatment. It is caused by the Treponema pallidum bacterium, which can be transmitted sexually, from mother to fetus, or through blood transfusions. Syphilis progresses through primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary stages. It is diagnosed through clinical examination, demonstration of spirochetes, and detection of antibodies. Treatment involves benzathine penicillin or alternative antibiotics depending on the stage of syphilis. Prevention involves barrier methods and avoiding contact with infected individuals.
This PowerPoint presentation was compiled and prepared by Platon S. Plakar, Jr a student majoring in Physician Assistant at Cuttington University. This presentation provides a brief understanding of Syphilis, an infectious disease condition that affects people exposed to sexual contact.

INTRODUCTION
“This is a hidden and silent epidemic. Normally an epidemic of this proportion would have attracted more attention.”
1996, Chancellor of Baylor College of Medicine
Refers to the 12 million new STI cases/year in
1996; now estimated to be 15 million/year (increase due to higher numbers and better testing)

INTRODUCTION
Hidden – 2 meanings
1. taboo subject of sex; not talked about publicly in a serious way
2. most Americans not aware of this epidemic
Silent – 3 meanings
1. some STIs have no symptoms
2. lack of communication between individuals and their health care providers
3. lack of communication between sexual partners
4
STI vs. STD
STI
Someone who is an infected person
ASYMPTOMATIC may not have any symptoms,
Could be unaware that they are even sick.
STD
A disease is any abnormal condition
of the body or mind with some type of symptom,
in other words your body tells you that you are unwell.
5
BACTERIA VIRUS
Living organism
May be stopped with appropriate antibiotic
Mild Severe
Not “alive;” lives on host
No known cures
Controlled by vaccine
Mild Severe
IMPACT ON WOMEN
Lack of symptoms; more difficult to diagnose until serious problems develop
150,000 (estimate) women become infertile each year due to PID (pelvic inflammatory disease)as a result of an STI
15-30% (estimate) of the 2.3 million US couples who are infertile may by result of an STI
7
RISK FACTORS
Most STIs more easily transmitted to women than to men
Co-factor: infected with an STI makes one more likely to contract another STI, including HIV, after unprotected sexual contact with an infected partner
Multiple sex partners increase risk of exposure over one’s lifetime
8
Viral
Viral:
Herpes
HPV
HIV
Hepatitis B
9
HERPES GENITALIS
Caused by: Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV);
Type 1: 50-80% exposure rate; prefers facial area;
Type 2: 20% exposure rate; prefers genital areas;
Once in body, migrates to a nerve cluster (ganglia) and goes dormant; evades detection from body’s immune system; probably not contagious at this time.
May stay dormant forever or may migrate back to its first entry point on skin (active phase); it infects healthy cells, making new viruses. The immune system attacks and destroys infected cells; this “battle” is a herpes “outbreak.”
10
Herpes - symptoms
Incubation period: 1-12 days after sex with an infected person; may not appear for months or years
Duration: may last 12 days; flu-like symptoms; avera.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

SYPHILIS
BY- NILESH SHARMA
(Pharm-D 2nd year)
2. WHAT IS SYPHILIS ?
SYPHILIS IS A SYSTEMIC ,SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE (STD) CAUSED BY THE
TREPONEMA PALLIDUM BACTERIUM.
THE THREE MEANS OF SYPHILIS TRANSMISSION ARE :
PERSON TO PERSON VIA VAGINAL , ANAL OR ORAL SEX THROUGH DIRECT
CONTACT WITH A SYPHILIS CHANCRE.
PERSON TO PERSON DURING FOREPLAY ,EVEN WHEN THERE IS NO PENETRATIVE
SEX (MUCH LESS COMMON ).
PREGNANT MOTHER WITH SYPHILIS TO FETUS.
3. SYPHILIS INTRODUCTION:
CAUSED BY TREPONEMA PALLIDUM.
TRANSMISSION : SEXUAL; MATERNAL – FETAL;BLOOD TRANSFUSION AND RARELY
BY OTHER MEANS OF BOTH TRANSMITTING AND GETTING INFECTED WITH HIV.
4. MODE OF TRANSMISSION :
SEXUAL TRANSMISSION IS MOST COMMON,OCCURS WHEN ABRADED SKIN OR
MUCOUS MEMBRANES COME IN CONTACT WITH OPEN LESION.
CAN BE TRANSMITTED TO FETUS.
RARE TRANSMISSION FROM NEEDLE STICK AND BLOOD TRANSFUSION.
5. STAGES OF SYPHILIS :
PRIMARY
SECONDARY
LATENT :
EARLY LATENT
LATE LATENT
LATE OR TERTIARY : MAY INVOLVE ANY ORGAN,BUT MAIN PARTS ARE-
NEUROSYPHILIS
CARDIOVASCULAR SYPHILIS
LATE BENIGN ( GUMMA)
6. PRIMARY :
DEVELOPS AT SITE OF CONTACT.
MULTIPLIES AT THE SITE OF ENTRY, A SMALL PAINLESS PRIMARY LESION CALLED
CHANCRE IS FORMED.
APPEARS ON EXTERNAL GENITILLA CORONA OF THE PENIS LABIA,VAGINAL
WALL.
ALSO OCCURS IN CEVIX,PERIANAL AREA,MOUTH,ANAL CANAL.
7. SECONDARY :
SECONDARY SYPHILIS AT 2-10 WEEKS AFTER PRIMARY LESION –DIFFUSE
SYMPTOMS :
FEVER,HEADACHE,SKIN PUSTULES.
USUALLY DISAPPEARS EVEN WITHOUT TREATMENT.
8. LATENT SYPHILIS :
AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS,SECONDARY LESIONS DISAPPEAR AND DISEASE BECOMES
LATENT.
NOT INFECTIOUS AT THIS STAGE.
EXCEPT FOR TRANSMISSION FROM MOTHER TO FOETUS (CONGENITAL SYPHILIS).
9. TERTIARY SYPHILIS :
DEVELOPS AFTER MANY YEARS IN PERSONS WITH UNTREATED SECONDARY
SYPHILIS.
APPEARANCE OF DEGENERATIVE LESIONS CALLED GUMMAS IN SKIN,BONE AND
NERVOUS SYSTEM.
10. DIAGNOSIS :
EVALUTION BASED ON THREE FACTORS :
CLINICAL FINDINGS
DEMONSTRATION OF SPIROCHETES IN CLINICAL SPECIMEN.
PRESENT OF ANTIBODIES IN BLOOD OR CEREBRAL FLUID.
MORE THAN ONE TEST SHOULD BE PERFORMED.
11. LABORATORY TESTING:
DIRECT EXAMINATION OF CLINICAL SPECIMEN BY DARK –FIELD MICROSCOPY OR
FLUORESCENT ANTIBODY TESTING OF SAMPLE.
SPECIFIC TREPONEMAL ANTIBODY TESTS ARE USED AS A CONFIRMATORY TEST
FOR A POSITIVE REAGIN TEST.
12. SEROLOGICAL TESTS OF SYPHILIS (
DEPENDING UPON ANTIGEN )
NON TREPONEAL / STANDARD TESTS :
VDRL
RPR
WASEMANN TESTS
TREPONEMAL TESTS :
FTA-ABS
TPHA
13. PREVENTIONS :
AVOIDANCE OF SEXUAL CONTACT WITH DISEASED INDIVIDUAL.
USE PHYSICAL BARRIERS (condom ) AND ANTISEPTICS.
14. TREATMENT :
EARLY SYPHILIS
BENZATHINE PENICILLIN G ( INTRAMUSCULARLY ONCE )
PROCAINE PENICILIN 600000 UNITS INTRAMUSCULARLY DAILY FOR 10 DAYS.
IF PATEINT IS UNABLE TO TAKEN PENICILLIN ,THEN GIVE TERTRACYCLINE OR
ERYTHROMYCIN 500 MG 4 TIMES A DAY BY MOUTH –OR DOXYCYCLINE 100 MG FOR -
15 DAYS.
CEFTRIAXONE ,IT IS EFFECTIVE SPECIALLY IN NEUROSYPHILIS.
