Transaction processing systems are information systems designed to process routine business transactions in large volumes through automation. They interface with other information systems and center around accounting and finance transactions, processing things like airline reservations, orders, and bank account transactions. Some examples of transaction processing systems include IBM's CICS and IMS systems from the 1960s-1980s and the cross-platform Tuxedo system.
