This document defines and provides examples of different types of information systems: Transaction Processing Systems (TPS) which process business transactions, Office Automation Systems (OAS) which automate office tasks like email and documents, Knowledge Work Systems (KWS) which serve informational needs, Decision Support Systems (DSS) which support decision making, Executive Support Systems (ESS) which allow accessing and reporting data, and Group Decision Support Systems (GDSS) which support group work and meetings. Each system type is defined and examples are given.

-Is an information processing system for business
transactions involving the collection, modifiation and
retrieval of all transaction data.
-TPS is also known as transaction processing or real-time
processing.

communications. Computer-based information systems
used in this way are generally referred to as office
automation systems.
