This document summarizes a 20-year project using constructed wetlands and waste stabilization ponds to treat wastewater in the village of Hostětín in the Czech Republic. The project began in 1993 and involved mechanical pretreatment followed by treatment in constructed wetlands and final purification in waste stabilization ponds. Monitoring has shown the system achieves high removal rates of over 60% for BOD5 and COD on average. The natural treatment system has provided environmental and educational benefits to the local community while requiring low operation and maintenance costs. It serves as a model for small wastewater treatment in the Czech Republic.
