The Great Us Economic Recession
THE GREAT US ECONOMIC RECESSION Introduction Did you know that by the end of the
year 2009 the unemployment rate had increased from its average 5% to an astounding 10%?
This is because 15.3 million people became unemployed as a result of the economic recession.
No shocker, but poverty rate had also increased from 13.2% in 2008 to 14.3% in 2009. This
meant that the number of people living in poverty in the United States had increased from 39.8
million to 43.6 million. This great increase had all happened in the span of 1 year. Something
that should have taken over 10 years only took 1 year and this is all because of the Great US
recession. Also the US suicide rate had reached its highest record since 25 years between the
years 2008 09. The great US recession was a result of foolish decisions made in the past, which
then in turn lead to a slow and painful punishment for the US economy. It was caused mainly
because banks were loaning out too much money; Banks used money which they didn t really
have on paper to invest heavily into the housing market and the stock market; the debts which
the citizens were creating by using large amounts of loans to pay for their daily expenses and to
pay for expensive things became impossible to pay. Banks were loaning out too much money If
you google when the US recession began it will answer 2007. So the better question would be
when did it start to develop, because something so grand could not just have been made overnight.

Battlestar Galactica Essay
Battlestar Galactica is a story of betrayal for those who created the cylons. The story is a classic
scenario that entails man creating machine and machine turning and destroying man. Battlestar
shows heavily a sub text of anger that is distributed by the people through the way of the
government. The episode shows great emotion and intensity amongst the lead characters by
throwing power into the mix of drama.
The characters in Battlestar Galactica show the state in which humanity reacts in the time of great
defeat. This is shown immediately when the Secretary of Education is sworn into presidency. She
almost instantaneously reacts throwing out commands in all directions. She believes that whatever
she says is the correct way to react and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The captain did however have the right idea of keeping the civilians clear and distant because in
actuality that amount of people, fifty thousand, would have slowed down any major attempts to do
anything. While both of the leaders had good points they both lacked in one major problem which
many companies, corporations, and governments lack today. They seemed to leave out what was
best for the people. The president had the right idea, but she cared more about saving people then
thinking of an exit strategy, yet the captain had ideas but didn t care about the actual safety of the
people. This subject not only creates controversy in the show, but relates back to the real world and
the controversy between whether or not our government is actually here to help us, or whether they
are just here with their own selfish purposes.
The Story of Battlestar Galactica is a deeply intriguing and sub textual story filled with betrayal and
fear. The show hits heavy with ethics and the weaknesses and strengths that a government can have
when it is thrown into an unknown situation with unknown outcomes. Battlestar Galactica shows
the faults in humanity and can show us, as humans, how to overcome some of those faults.

Technology Is The World Of Online Education
As the world of online education continues to evolve, schools are incorporating digital learning into
their classrooms. Through diversifying learning and opening communication technology has
become the most unique way to develop the comprehension the school s desire. Student learning
and the outcome of the technology generation has become a common development and looks as
though it is here to stay. This paper discusses the pros for technology as the gateway to education,
such as: diversity technology gives and individuality and responsibility technology makes students
have; however, the most repetitive con this paper discusses and disproves is the idea that
technology is a distraction.
Technology is one of the most controversial and innovative subjects in recent history. It has been
said that it s what will cause us to survive in the near, but distant future. Technology has been
entering the realm of education for years now. Some schools are becoming one on one schools
where every student has their own computer. The increasing population of ELL students have also
come to use technological resources as a way to not only communicate, but to learn the English
language. However, there are those who see technology as a distraction or it does not socialize the
students. The main argument for technology in the classroom is that emerging students should be
able to apply classroom concepts to daily life, and a large part of daily life revolves around
technology.

Analysis Of Robert Lewis Bridge Of Influence And Proof
A bridge that is beautiful and appealing to the eye would inspire one to cross it without
hesitation due to the beauty of its structure. The philosophical idea of Robert Lewis Bridge of
Influence and Proof, from this week s assigned reading provided insight of a methodological
approach of ministering evangelistically that deemed appropriate. In all actuality, I was enlighten
in that realistically most people who travel from one city (state) to another have come to a point
where there was a need to cross over a bridge. The purpose of that bridge was to connect two
points together by way of a secure structure that has been considered reliable. The purpose of the
diagramed bridge is to display the aspect of what reconnecting the church with

dying of shock. Chopin leads the readers to think that she would rather die then be forced to live
under the bond of marriage. when the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease of joy
that kills ( Chopin, 1894, 61). In A White Heron Sylvia stuggled in town to be happy and find
herself. It wasnt till she came to live with her grandmother that she started to find a since of
freedom within herself. One day while Sylvia was admiring the outdoors and walking home the
cow she was greated by a young man. This young man was looking for a specific bird known as
a white heron. He offered to pay anyone ten dollars that could show him the nest of the white
heron. Sylvia and her grandmother were poor and could use the money. Sylvia had seen the bird
before and had every intention on helping the young man find it. When she discovers that the
heron has a family she decides that she can not help the young man any more. She remembers how
the white heron came flying through the golden air and how they watched the sea and the morning
together, and Sylvia cannot speak; she cannot tell the heron s secret and give its life away ( Jewett,
1886, 59). Sylvia spends time with the heron and feels like they are friends. Were the birds better

The Film Fight Club By David Fincher
The film Fight Club, directed by David Fincher, can be used as an example of a postmodern film.
Edward Norton plays the lead, but Edward s Norton s character goes unnamed throughout the
entire film; being credited only as The Narrator. As the narrator and a main character, Norton s
character is aware that he is in the movie for the majority of the film, but also takes part in the
overall storyline. He does that by breaking the fourth wall and interacting with the audience. The
entire film is very fast paced and complex, with each scene getting right to the point. There are
numerous plots within Fight Club, aside from the actual fighting. The characters in Fight Club are
morally ambiguous. Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) has no sense of moral compass. He is introduced as a
projectionist, who sneaks pornography into films. He is also a thief, who steals human fat from the
liposuction clinic to make soap with. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= T1MckpC_Gc] He
shows no mercy when it comes to inflicting pain on others, telling The Narrator to stay with the
pain and smacking him upside the face while he chemically burns him. [https://www.youtube.com

and punch each other until they are bloodied beyond recognition. [https://www.youtube.com

Sleep Paralysis
I went to bed as usual that night it was dark and windy outside I fell asleep
calmly and soundly but somehow everything seemed different. What was this feeling? It felt
cold and ominous, at some point I realized I was still awake but not really awake in a sense; I
couldn t move a single muscle. It was dark and fuzzy but somehow my brain was still conscious
and aware that I was in my own bed and proper environment. My entire body was paralyzed I tried
moving my body but as hard as I tried I couldn t seem to wake myself up.
I eventually figured I should start by moving the smallest muscles in my body. I attempted to

Sleep paralysis and nocturnal attackers are integral to folklore of many countries. It is interesting
how vary between cultures, while the main aspect pf the experience remains the same.
One of the best documented example of nocturnal attackers are Kanashibari in Japan. The term
Kanashibari, meaning to tie with iron rope is derived from the magic of Fudoh Myohoh, a
Buddhist God. The idea of being tied up comes from the belief that ancient Buddhist monks could
use magic to paralyze others as if there were bound in a metal rope. Even today, many
Japanese believe Kahashibari to be cause by evil spirits. In a 1987 study of Japanese respondents,
Fukuda et al found the symptons of kanashibari to be identical to those of sleep paralysis. Sleep
paralysis has been linked to disorders such as narcolepsy, migraines, anxiety disorders, and
obstructive sleep apnea. Several circumstances have been identified that are associated with an
increase of risk of sleep paralysis. These include insomnia and sleep deprivation, an erratic sleep
schedule, stress, overuse of stimulants, physical fatigue, as well as

The Ford Foundations Of The Cold War
The Cold War was a time of competition, vast technological improvements, and even philanthropic
efforts. Foundations such as the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, who were based
in the United States, started expanding to reach the third world. Post World War I and World War II
the United States did not want to get involved in another world war. The foundations that expanded
to reach the third world, were interested in preventing communism from taking over as the form
government in those countries. The Ford Foundation s president Paul Hoffman, was especially
concentrated on working with India, one of the poorest countries on the world. Hoffman and his
colleagues recognized a similarity in Indian to China before it was a communist

Baldwin s If Beale Street Could Talk
In the novel If Beale Street Could Talk, Baldwin creates a unique literary artwork by standing
against the norm of that era and taking a stand against things that were once ignored in society.
The first way he diverts from normalcy is to write from the perspective of a girl. This is odd
because most authors tend to stay within their gender. Most stories tend to be organized in
chronological order, however, Baldwin decided to comply to different time elements such as what
he does in the case of jumping from the present to a flashback. Another way in which Baldwin casts
such a dramatic novel is through the complex internal and external conflicts that revolve around
Tish and her family. The perspective, time elements, and conflicts combine to create a truly unique
outlook on this epic love story and the ways that religion, sex, family and violence influenced
society as of that era.
The first manner in which Baldwin addresses his story is through the perspective he uses in
choosing Tish, an African Americanfemale, as the main character when Baldwin presides as a male.
This method helps us to understand the hardships that African Americans must endure of that era
through a relatable character. One example of how Baldwin uses metaphor to explain how people
view their race is through the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

perspectives ranging from childhood to adulthood, the time elements of present and past, and the

cultural adaptations of religion, sex, family, and violence in order to show society s opinion of
them and how moral values had been changed due to these assumptions. This has altered the
perspectives of thousands of people and hosts an interesting story which in my experience is also

Cut Carnations Lab Report
Abstract The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the influence of various chemicals on the
senescence of cut carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus). Treatments involved included a control
bleach (0.01% sodium hypochlorite) solution, a diluted sucrose solution (1% sucrose in 0.01%
sodium hypochlorite) and a concentrated sucrose solution (3% sucrose in 0.01% sodium
hypochlorite), with 4 trials for each treatment. Results showed the most effective solution for
prolonging the life of cut carnations was the 3% sucrose solution, as flowers in this solution spend
longer times in stages of senescence while only reaching the withering stage of senescence. It can
then be said that higher concentration of sugar solutions promotes cut flower longevity.... Show

Ethylene sensitivity determines flower longevity and its presence accelerates senescence. I would
use a solution of boric acid, and a boric acid/sucrose solution (with 0.01% sodium hypochlorite), to
see the effects of just boric acid, and the mixed solution to see the effects of an ethylene inhibitor
combined with a nutrient/energy source and antimicrobial agent. Other experiments have showed
the use of floral preservatives containing sucrose and ethylene inhibitors delay petal senescence,
decrease ethylene sensitivity and improve aesthetic characteristics (Ebrahimzadeh et al.,

Karel Benz s Impact On The Modern World
Karel Benz was the first person to make the car. The first car was known as the Motorwagen.
Karel Benz was also the creator of a car company that still exists today. It took a lot of
improvements and redesigning of the car to make it run smoothly and efficiently. The creation of
the car had a huge impact on the modern world.
Karl Benz was born in 1884 in Karlsruhe. His father died due to an accident when Benz was 2
years old. Even though his father died Benz s mother supported him and his education.
After a lot of hard work Benz was able to be admitted to the University of Karlsruhe at the age

The internal combustion engine is vital to the modern automobile. An internal combustion engine
uses an explosive combustion of fuel to push a piston within a cylinder. The piston moves to turn a
crankshaft that is connected to the car s wheels through a drive shaft.
Without an engine a car could not move. The internal combustion engine has a long history of how
it was improved and redesigned, without which the car would wouldn t be able to function.
In 1680 Christiaan Huygens designed an internal combustion engine fueled by gunpowder. Then
in 1826 Samuel Brown altered a steam engine to burn gasoline and put it on a carriage. Later Jean
Joseph Etienne Lenoir patented a double acting, spark ignition internal combustion engine fueled
by coal gas in 1858. Then he improved the engine so it would run on petroleum and it was
attached to a three wheeled wagon which could travel 50 miles. In 1873 an
American engineer named George Brayton developed a two stroke kerosene engine. Then in
1876 Nikolaus August Otto improved the two stroke kerosene engine into the four stroke engine.
Later in 1885 Gottlieb Daimler invented the prototype of the modern gasoline engine. Then

Jane Eyre Otherness Essay
Otherness is a state of isolating an individual because of the subversiveness they are considered
to have within the society. The female and child otherness is a prominent issue in the novels, Jane
Eyre (1847), and Wide Sargasso Sea (1966), though the stories were fashioned in different periods.
There is a depiction of extensively different social, political and societal sceneries. Conversely,
regardless of their variances, expositions of youthful, female otherness and aspects as regards
selfhood could be associated to the writers predictions of the dangerous female other. According to
numerous critics, Jane Eyres noveloffers Jane as a social stranger. This marginalization leads to the

Comparison Of Poetry And All Quiet On The Western Front
Poetry and All Quiet On the Western Front Compare and Contrast World War I, it is a part of our
history. Something that can never be changed, yet it changed everything for the people involved. It
did not only change the daily lives of people, it changed the way people thought about war.
Everything from poems to books were changed due to World War I. May Wedderburn Cannan, who
was a nurse, knew how deadly wounds were on the battlefield. During World War I, Cannan
volunteered with the Oxford Voluntary Aid Detachment and helped publish government
propaganda with Clarendon Press. She spent a month in Rouen, France in 1915 volunteering at
a railway canteen for soldiers, an experience that inspired her most famous poem, Rouen. When
the Armistice was declared, Cannan was working for MI5 in Paris. ( May Wedderburn Cannan
). Cannan wrote many poems aside from Rouen, with one being After the War . The poem gives
an insight to women of World War I and how they longed to hear their loved one s voice. The
poem tells a story about a woman who grows weary thinking of what she and her loved one used
to do together. She longs to hear his voice and is praying for the time the country is not at war,
better known as peacetime. In chapter 5 of our novelAll Quiet on the Western Front, Muller and the
men discuss peacetime, and how they will spend their time after the war. Many of the men, such as
Kropp and Paul are youthful and realize they have the bare minimum to return home to,

Essay on Management Theories
After the end of the Industrial Revolution, large corporations were beginning to grow in size and
power in order to satisfy what seemed the endless demands for new goods and services. As
corporations and labor forces grew, there was a need to develop a more systematic study of
organization and management, known as managementtheory, the significant being Frederick Taylor
s Principles of Scientific Management which involved the development of training workers through
special incentives and compensation (Boone p.33). In general, early management scientists tended
to believe that there was a single way to organize companies and manage employees. By the
beginning of the 20th century, there were initial attempts for launching a systematic and... Show

Herzberg concluded that extrinsic rewards, or hygiene factors, could never create real work
motivation. The growth or motivational factors in a firm include achievement, recognition,
responsibility, and advancement while the dissatisfaction avoidance or hygiene factors consists of
extrinsic factors such as administration, supervision, interpersonal relationships, working conditions
and salary (Boone p.176). Thus, in attempting to enrich an employee s job, it was necessary for
management to reward and recognize personal contribution rather than just giving the employee the
opportunity to growth. This school of thought is known as vertical loading was at the time thought
of to be more rewarding to employees and increase productivity rather than horizontal loading,
which did not concentrate on employees motivational factors.
Unlike Herzberg, who focused on employee recognition and rewards, Peter F. Drucker, a more
recent influential figure in management theory, argued that in modern times, employees in a firm
should be given the opportunity to grow and contribute to management and the decision making
process. In his article, Management s New Paradigms, Drucker asserts that there are many
assumptions about management that are out of date, including the В‘right way to manage people.

To do that you have to go spend lots of money on free agents, like they are doing now. The way a
team builds itself changes the type of culture that surrounds a team. A team at the other end of the
spectrum is the St. Louis Cardinals. They have built their team through their farm system like I
mention earlier, also known as the minor leagues. Many of their players are home grown talent
as they call it and the fans are very close to their players, unlike the money driven stars, the fans
feel like the young players are growing up and their involved with it. An example of this is on
the teams Facebook page the team posted a thank you to two of their home grown stars that they
traded away, and the top comment reads this, Freese will always be a cardinal in the hearts of
true fans of STL(St. Louis) baseball. The second highest comment posted is this, Freese will
always be the homegrown talent. Best of luck to both of them in Anaheim. The cardinal fans
love their players and care about wining, but there is more to it to them, they feel a part of the
growing of David Freese and other players like him. Teams like the Cardinals, Yankees, and the
Red Sox don t have to worry too much about bringing in fans like small market teams. Teams that
do have to try to get fans to come to the games like the Tampa Bay Rays or the Seattle Mariners.

Differences Between Disney And Grimm s Cinderella
Differences Between Disney and Grimm s Cinderella There are many different versions of the
classic story, Cinderella. Grimm s version was just as wonderful, but had more twisted moments
than Disney s story. Both stories are about a girl who overcomes the cruelty of her evil
stepmother and stepsisters and ends up living happily ever after. Although, there are many
differences, there are three that stand out. The three main differences are, the father died in
disney s version but did not die in Gimms version, there was no fairy godmother in Grimm s
version but there was in Disney s, and in the original version the stepsisters cut their heels and toes
off so it would fit in the slipper but in the Disney version they did not. One major... Show more

However, what was Disney s thinking for changing it? The godmother in Cinderella symbolizes
Cinderella s guardian angel. By creating the fairy godmother instead of the magical hazel tree,
Disney created more magic in the story which makes it more interesting and fun for the
audience. The last difference between the two stories is quite disturbing. In Disney s Cinderella,
when it came time to try on the slipper the two stepsisters tried their hardest to squish their feet
into it. However, Grimms version is drastically different. Instead of trying to just squish their feet
in, one step sister cut the heel of her foot off and the other cut her big toe off. A reason to why
Brothers Grimm might have included that part is because they wrote this story in 1812. Disney
did not want to have that in their version of the story because of the audience that watches, such
as little children and their families. It would not be as enjoyable nor as humorous if they included
that gruesome part of Grimm s story. When comparing the Grimm Brothers story and Disney s
version, they have three major differences. By Disney changing Cinderella from the original
Grimm version, they were taking the dark and twisty parts and changing them into a more
enjoyable scene. The changes between the two stories are so drastic you might have never thought
Disney s Cinderella was originally based off of Grimm s written version,

Battle On The Plains Of Abraham And The Metis
Battles help students realize the perspectives of each side. For an example, Battle on the Plains of
Abraham and Battle of Seven Oaks have perspectives of British and French or Scottish and The
Metis, which makes students become more aware of which side they agree on . However, both of
these battles started with a vengeance, hatred and wrongdoings, but differ in the terms of their
elaborate details, specific reasons, and surprising results after the fighting.
One similarity between these 2 battles is that the English side caused both of the battles. The British

Table Salt Water Vial
Introduction The purpose of this experiment was to show the properties and capabilities of super
absorbent polymers and how table salt (NaCl) affects the properties of the super absorbent
polymer. For this experiment we were given three vials of substances; one vial contained a small
amount of powder of super absorbent polymer, one was 1/3 full with water, and the last one was
1/3 full with salt water. We were then instructed to mix these vials in order to see how the
materials relate and impact each other s physical and chemical properties. Experimental For the
experimental procedures I unscrewed the lids of both the polymer vial and the water vial, I poured

The invention is a 2.5 gallon fire extinguishing device containing 2.2 3.7 ounces of a dry
powered super absorbent polymeric material. The claim of the patent is to present a process for
use with 2.5 gallon water based fire extinguisher that uses a super absorbent polymer that
transforms water into a fire extinguishing or preventing substance or gel. This super absorbent
polymer gel will bring fires under control more quickly, thus offering substantial water and
timesaving...the water swollen gel provides a greater water laden surface area, with a higher heat
capacity, than the unbound water molecule. Thus, more water actually reaches the fire without
being evaporated and therefore provides more cooling of the fire. Thus, the fire is extinguished
using less water . The super absorbent polymers are prepared from water soluble polymers, but
have cross linking structures that render the polymers water insoluble. The super absorbent
polymers can be dehydrated to a powder. When the powder is added to an aqueous solution and
agitated, a super absorbent gel like substance is formed. Therefore, when the dry super absorbent
polymer is introduced in a water based fire extinguisher, the mixture is agitated to disperse the
powder. The resulting aqueous mixture containing super absorbent

From this definition, it may make parent infer that all boys are aggression by how they play. This
would not be true. Boys are going to be boys, meaning that they will wrestle and play out TV show

results in injury (Thompson, n.d.). These acts are different from just playing, because the child, in
the sense, tries to hurt another child on purpose because they are not being heard or are

Another example of a multidomal anxiety reduction that may fortify one s way of coping with

Reaction Paper On Reflexology
There is evidence that reflexology has been around for many centuries and practiced by many
different cultures including Chinese and Egyptians (Gillanders 2008, Mei Yeh, Pei Shan, Pi Hsia,
Wen Yin,Che Ming, 2008). Archeologists have uncovered various pictures in tombs of ancient
Egyptians working on what is believed to be patient s hands and feet (Gillanders pg. 12).
Reflexologydates back to 2330 BCE, and has become a very sought after healing treatment for
patients of many different illnesses. In the 4th century, a Chinese acupuncturist called Dr. Ko Hung
discovered that using his thumbs to apply a deep pressure to the soles of the feet while acupuncture
needles were in the place was a means of enhancing healing and encouraging energy to be
released . Sometimes reflexology is still referred to as acupuncture without the use of needles
(Gillanders pg. 12). It has only become popular in the United States last in the 100 years. Zone
therapy was the precursor to modern reflexology, which was reborn through the work of William
H Fitzgerald MD in the early 20th century. He was an ear, nose, and throat specialist in the Boston
City Hospital in Connecticut. Dr. Fitzgerald discovered that by applying pressure to the tops of the
fingers with metal clamps, and winding tight elastic bands around the middle section of each
finger, he created an anesthetic effect on the facial area. By this, he was able to do simple ear, nose,
and throat surgery without any anesthesia.

For example, at Augusta University, women only compose 56 out of 148 administrative posts, and
only 647 of the 1,481 teaching posts were filled by women or people of an nonbinary gender
(Workplace Profile). The fact that women are so poorly represented in cases like this can have a
great effect on the gender diversity of the university and the feelings of systematic sexism that
students feel on campus. If female students don t see women in teaching positions, it can make
it seem as if they aren t truly a part of campus, and that they are in a male dominated area of
society. This can result in a sense of disentitlement in women and a sense of entitlement in men.
As a student, I can tell you that the mansplaining in Zeilinger s piece on sexism on campus, is a
real thing. Like Zeilinger says, men think it s their place to interrupt women and explain the
coursework as if they were a teacher instead of a student. This is a prime example of how the
sexism in faculty appointment leaks over into student life, because it makes nonbinary students

for all students regardless of gender, making them less involved in class discussions and

he said its important to have a sense of humor because you will be put into stressful situations

The Evolution Of Dance, The Italian Renaissance, And The...
The body says what words cannot (Martha Graham). This quote helps explain how the body can
move in ways to help explain cultures and events that have happened. The body can move in
ways to show emotion that people are sometimes unable to explain with words. Different styles of
dance have evolved dramatically over the years and can even be used in the modern world as a
profession.
Dance has been affected by many events including religious rituals that helped form the art of
dance, the Italian Renaissance, and the French Revolution. Dance was originally reserved for
religious rituals in ancient civilizations ( Dance 1). Dance was used in the religions: Judaism,
Christianity, and Islamic. In ancient Egypt, different cultures would use dance to perform for their
peers in ceremonies. Dance spread throughout Europe and soon became a common activity in
many European countries. Dance also played a part in Greek and Roman society. Dance was used
for religious purposes and was also demonstrated in ceremonies. Dancing commemorated the
changing of the seasons, life and death, social solidarity, and the connection between humanity and
the unseen powers that affected human existence ( Overview of Dance 2). Dance would also be
used in the Greek society to honor a god or an important individual. Ballet can be dated all the way
back to the Italian Renaissance. In the fifteenth century, ballet was demonstrated during the courts
of Italy. Ballet was not made to be performed in front of

The Mary Kay concealer is used for combating the problem of dark shadows underneath the eyes.
In color correcting, opposite colors on the color wheel are used to counteract the tone on the skin.
For example, green is able to diffuse redness or red spots, like blemishes. Just like green, yellow is a
color corrector and can be used to neutralize bluish purple shadows on the face. The formula of
the concealer is a variance of red, orange and yellow tones. This color is opposite of blues and
purples on the color wheel, making it neutralize the colors. The Mary Kay makeup comes in six

The World Of Law Enforcement And Crime Laboratories
In the world of law enforcement and crime laboratories, there is always a great need to train newly
hired crime scene investigators and laboratory analysts. In addition, continuing education to gain or
maintain certifications and/or laboratory accreditation is important to keep professionals up to date
with the newest technologies and techniques. However, in the United States, licensing and
certification for crimescene and laboratory personnel is not usually required, but often noted as a
preferred or desired qualification (NCR, 2009). If required, certification is usually established at
the agency level and not mandated by the state. With more than 17,000 agencies in the U.S.,
ranging in size from just a few officers in rural communities to more than 36,000 sworn officers in
the New York PoliceDepartment (Burch, et al., 2012), consistency in qualifications, training
standards and expectations is difficult to find at any level, regardless of the beliefs held by the
general public regarding the capabilities of their criminal justicesystem. In looking at training issues
internationally, the fragmented scenario in the U.S. is similar to that of Australia, but countries

Why Was The Colonized England s First Colony
Q8. During the 1800s, England was working on expanding their country by taking over other
nations. England would then claim that land as their new colony. Next, England would immigrate
their native people into their newly claimed land. Overtime, these colonies would become very
successful, most of them held enough power to stand on their own. Canada is an example of one of
Englands first colony. Canada was colonized first by the European country France. In the coming
years, Canada was taken over and colonized by the British. In 1763, England annexed Canada
after they had defeated France during the French and Indian War. However, with this newly added
land, it would also bring problems of its own.
There were two major problem that would grow in Canada. Those problems included religious and
cultural differences between the native people and the new immigrants from Britain. The biggest
conflicts happened between the Roman Catholic French and the English speaking colonists. The
natives to Canada were growing angry at Great Britain. Great Britain knew that in order to keep

Canada had an English speaking majority. Upper Canada today is located in Ontario, Canada.

provinces, wealthy British people held most of the power. However, this changed during the
1800s. In both colonies, middle class people began to demand political and economic reforms. The
separation between the two groups temporarily worked, soon they would have to find another plan.
During the 1830s, rebellions began in both Upper and Lower Canada. The conflicts had rekindled,
England would have to come up with another new solution before time ran

Rural Homelessness
Rural Homelessness
As the Joad family lost its farm and hit the road in Steinbeck s classic, The Grapes of Wrath, so
to did America lose its ability to plead ignorance to the problem of rural homelessness. Yet, as the
troubles of the Great Depression, and two million homeless Americans, were eclipsed by a world
at war, the issue of homelessness was once again placed on the back burner, and then taken off of
the stove altogether (Davis 275). Although this problem has seldom been discussed in the sixty
years since, rural homelessness is again on the rise and threatens to become the major problem
facing rural America (Rural Homelessness).

Although the homeless here may be out of sight, they are still present; for a variety of reasons,
the rural homeless are not as blatantly obvious as their peers in the city. For example, few rural
communities have homeless shelters, which, in big cities, tend to congregate the homeless into
easily identifiable groups. As a result, some indigent people are forced to find temporary shelter
with friends and family; others sleep in their vehicles at campsites. This we take care of our own
attitude tends to keep the rural homeless out of site of passers by. Subsequently, the exact numbers
of rural homeless are nearly impossible to track (Wilkinson).
While the causes of homelessness (drug addiction, fleeing from abusive relationships, mental health
problems, and economic depressions) are similar for the rural and urban homeless, the
demographics of the population are exceedingly dissimilar (Rural Homelessness). Julie
Zimmerman, referring to the rural homeless, states, of households living in poverty, there are very
nearly as many living in two adult households , as are living in single adult households (B).
Additionally, in many of the cases at least one of those adults is employed. This fact alone
illustrates the difference between homelessness in the rural environment and the urban variety

Justification For Osteoporosis
Justification
Osteoporosis is commonly known around the world as the numbers continue to increase every year.
Osteoporosis is known to cause problems in middle aged women and occasionally effecting some
men (1), currently reaching the number of 200million women diagnosed with osteoporosis (2).
Arthritis Organisation states that anyone can get osteoporosis but women are about four times more
likely than men to develop it, with two main reasons contributing to this fact. For several years
after menopause occurs (ovaries stop producing oestrogen), the process of bone loss speeds up,
increasing the chance of being diagnosed with osteoporosis. Yet men generally reach a higher level

As osteoporosis occurs due to calcium deficiency, diet habit changes are crucial, allowing the body
to recover and strengthen the bones. Bone strengthening nutrition often includes an increase intake
of calcium and vitamin D (5).
As recommended, nutritionists often say that a sufficient amount of calcium intake per day is
1000mg for women over the age of 19 (6). Unfortunately, many people find it difficult to meet
the requirements as not all calcium we take in is used effectively. Some is lost and some
excreted. However, with the menu provided, calcium intake levels have been boosted to fit
patients diagnosed with osteoporosis. For example, the glass of milk provided at breakfast
contains 300mg per cup, providing approximately 1/3 of the recommended amount (7). Not only
does milk boost up the calcium, but most dairy products, tinned sardines or salmons, soy based
products and dark leaved vegetables also contain calcium (8). Some of these meals include the
cream of potato soup. As it remains as a side dish of the lunch, only 37mg of calcium has been
added. With all other meals and their calcium levels, the body is able to receive enough calcium per
day, as recommended. One other example throughout the menu that consists of calcium is the apple
turnover and custard for the dessert. This dessert comprises of ingredients such as milk and cream
allowing the body to consume a sufficient amount of calcium. Other calcium products has been
added throughout the meal to balance out the calcium intake of the day, without an overdosage as it
can have other side effects such as hypercalcimia which occurs due to too much calcium in the
bloodstream. To prevent osteoporosis the menu provides suitable amounts calcium, where the
calcium intake approximately adds up to 1087.17 mg (7) per day, meeting the recommendations,

Women are now portrayed as stabbing each other in the back and being overly sexualized
(Wonder Women). Portraying women as evil and overly sexualized sends out the wrong message
to viewers. It sends messages that women cannot be the heroes. If they are not villains then they
are often in need of rescue. The women seen on TV and comic books are wearing revealing outfits.
As the film points out, this leads to sexiness becoming the way of signaling empowerment . Young
girls deserve better than to think dressing provocatively is a way of showing empowerment.

some cases this rescue leads to King Arthur s death. The abductor also varies from story to story.

Guinevere. UXL Encyclopedia). In others, it is random people who want to get an edge up on
the king. Regardless of the abductor, in stories where she is discussed and has to have a man
come save her, it makes her seem less strong and capable. One more detail that changes from
story to story is how Queen Guinevere is portrayed. All of the other details of the story help to
justify this. She is either portrayed as loyal or betraying. In most cases, she is seen as betraying

seen as loyal for not seeing Lancelot after her husband s death ( Guinevere. UXL Encyclopedia).

Leonardo da Vinci states that, Leonardo da Vinci was a leading artist ad intellectual of the
Italian Renaissance who s known for his enduring works The Last Supper and Mona Lisa .
Leonardo da Vinci was born in Vinci, Italy on April 15, 1452. He was born out of wedlock being
raised by his father Ser Piero along with his stepmothers. Leonardo da Vinciwas into the laws of
science and nature, which played a major role with him becoming a painter, sculptor, inventor,

legacy.mos.org. He wrote short handedly using a technique in which he invented himself. He
usually used mirror writing , starting from the right side of the page and moving to the left .
There are multiple assumptions that people have come across into why Leonardo da Vinci used
the left to right mirroring writing technique. Some say that, one reason that he attempted to make
it harder for people to read his notes was so that individuals could not steal his ideas. Leonardo

Prohibition of Drugs in Columbia
Drug prohibition in Colombia has had minimal variations over time, as reflected in the precedent
set by the Constitutional Court since 1994 when they established that only behaviors that interfere

production of drugs, resolving in the end that it was fair and adjusted to constitutional values, they

1.INTRODUCTION
1.1 Definition of e Service Quality
E service quality (e SQ) is a study of the quality of service received over the internet. This can be
defined as the extent to which a website facilitates efficient and effective shopping, purchasing and
delivery (Zeithaml et al., 2000).
Over the next four years, it is estimated that the number of online buyers in the UK will rise by
over half of the UK s current population, from 26.9 million to 31.8 million (marketresearch.com).
Clearly, this is a very large and profitable market, with businesses securing increasing numbers of
sales online each year (British Retail Consortium). Higher website quality leads to higher
profitability levels (Vanitha et al, 1999), therefore having an efficient and effective website is
crucial for obtaining sales, and e SQ is a major factor in securing customer loyalty (Cristobal et al,
2007).
Some academic researchers have created comprehensive scales to measure e SQ. Since
SERVQUAL is the definitive measurement of service quality (Wilson et al, 2008), it stands to
reason that many scales measuring e SQ would be based

How Did Paris Change Throughout The 19th Century
Paris today is known as the city of lights. Full of opportunity and adventure, this city has a
wonderful reputation as an amazing home to some and tourist attraction to others. There are many
facets of the city that have helped to build the great reputation that Paris holds, and if it was not for
the rich history that this cityhas, it would not be the admirable city that it is today. Throughout the
late 18th and 19th centuries, many different obstacles arose for the city of Paris. From 1789 to 1891,
Paris overcame a great deal, some of which included The Terror, the reign of Napoleon I and III,
and The Commune. Many pieces of literature were published during this time and aided in
explaining these circumstances in the City of Paris. Through... Show more content on

Napoleon III was still in power, but during this time, Paris transformed into the Paris that many
know today. In Emile Zola s The Belly of Paris, is set in Les Halles, which is the central market
in Paris during the 19th century. A major theme in this novel which also helps to describe how
Paris changes during this century is the struggle between the fat and the thin. Unlike today,
Paris viewed fat people as wealthy and privileged, because they were obviously able to afford
luxurious foods. Thin people, on the contrary, were viewed as poverty stricken people who
could not afford to eat. Zola describes the main character, Florent: No, hunger had never left
him. He wracked his brains, but could not recall a single moment when his stomach had felt full.
He had become dry and withered; his stomach seemed to have shrunk; his skin clung to his bones
(Zola 12). Unfortunately, 19th century Paris had a large divide between the rich and the poor
and it was visible by how fat or thin people were. Although Florent had just arrived in Paris after
escaping his arrest, this quote perfectly describes how poverty affected society in 19th century
Paris. In addition, this novel also helps to describe the terrible working and living conditions of
the poor during this time. A particular family s living conditions is described: It was in the cellars
under the poultry market that they found a way of continuing to sleep together. Near the
slaughtering blocks were some big baskets of feather in which they could stretch out... Usually
they would drag their basket away from the gaslight; they were alone in the strong smell of
poultry, kept awake by the sudden crowning of the cocks in the dark (Zola 161). This couple went
to what seems to be the ends of the earth to find a somewhat comfortable sleeping situation,
although it is still very bad.

Disadvantages Of Bottled Water
If a person conducting a social experiment were to pass out two label less water bottles, one filled
with tap water and one filled with bottled water, the number of people that cannot tell which bottle
contains tap water might be surprising. The difference between tap and bottled water can vary
depending on brand, location, and other factors, but there will always be those that stand out. Tap
water has many advantages over bottled waterin frequent use. While bottled water might have its
own convenience, tap water costs less, is tested more frequently and publicly, and there is safety in
tap water despite the stigma stating otherwise. Tap water cost less due to not having to spend
money on the plastic needed to create the bottlesof bottled water. The cheapest bottled water found
in the local area could be a pack of twelve for $3.00, meaning the price per bottlewould be around
0.25 Вў; this amount is much greater than the average cost of tap water. Cost per bottle is not the
only cost of bottled water, there are also costs of transportation and production of the bottles
necessary to consider. According to Standage, This year, Americans will spend around $9.8
billion on bottled water (1). The amount spent in America alone on bottled water, if reallocated
elsewhere could provide large changes in places of need. Finance is not the only cost that bottled
water could impact however. The plastic in the bottles is made from petrol made from an oil base.

Method Acting
The Magic Touch of the Method Actor Method acting allows actors to go beyond the conventional
and practical way to act and make the work more human, more alive, more exciting, more amusing,
and more entertaining. According to its critics, Method acting counteracts the original form of
acting because the actorconcentrates more on himself rather than the development of the character.
Despite this claim, Method acting continues to be the key technique actors use to create in
themselves the thoughts and feelings of their characters, so as to develop convincing performances.
Evoked by Constantin Stanislavski at the Moscow Art Theatrein the early 20th century, Method
acting quickly spread on to the stage and screen at the end of the 40s and early 50s and has

The first appearance of Stanislavski s new company followed many unsuccessful previous groups
that performed a series of ephemeral farces, melodramas, and operettas (Hirsch 22). He hated the

Stanislavski wanted a stage where his audience would be so involved forgetting they were an
audience, and they would believe they were there at the time and place the play was set (Hirsch,
and Bell 6). With this, Stanislavsky created an ideal system where actors practiced techniques that
would later be proven to be effective on stage and screen. Stanislavski s based his entire system
heavily on Anton Chekhov s work ( Constantin Stanislavsky 4). Stanislavsky realized he was in
love with acting that had no laws, which caused him to create what was first known as the
Stanislavsky system ; Now known as the Method. Stanislavsky focused on creating the character
from the outer to the inner, meaning from the body to the soul of the character, in order to help him

  • 2. The Great Us Economic Recession THE GREAT US ECONOMIC RECESSION Introduction Did you know that by the end of the year 2009 the unemployment rate had increased from its average 5% to an astounding 10%? This is because 15.3 million people became unemployed as a result of the economic recession. No shocker, but poverty rate had also increased from 13.2% in 2008 to 14.3% in 2009. This meant that the number of people living in poverty in the United States had increased from 39.8 million to 43.6 million. This great increase had all happened in the span of 1 year. Something that should have taken over 10 years only took 1 year and this is all because of the Great US recession. Also the US suicide rate had reached its highest record since 25 years between the years 2008 09. The great US recession was a result of foolish decisions made in the past, which then in turn lead to a slow and painful punishment for the US economy. It was caused mainly because banks were loaning out too much money; Banks used money which they didn t really have on paper to invest heavily into the housing market and the stock market; the debts which the citizens were creating by using large amounts of loans to pay for their daily expenses and to pay for expensive things became impossible to pay. Banks were loaning out too much money If you google when the US recession began it will answer 2007. So the better question would be when did it start to develop, because something so grand could not just have been made overnight. The answer to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Battlestar Galactica Essay Battlestar Galactica is a story of betrayal for those who created the cylons. The story is a classic scenario that entails man creating machine and machine turning and destroying man. Battlestar shows heavily a sub text of anger that is distributed by the people through the way of the government. The episode shows great emotion and intensity amongst the lead characters by throwing power into the mix of drama. The characters in Battlestar Galactica show the state in which humanity reacts in the time of great defeat. This is shown immediately when the Secretary of Education is sworn into presidency. She almost instantaneously reacts throwing out commands in all directions. She believes that whatever she says is the correct way to react and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The captain did however have the right idea of keeping the civilians clear and distant because in actuality that amount of people, fifty thousand, would have slowed down any major attempts to do anything. While both of the leaders had good points they both lacked in one major problem which many companies, corporations, and governments lack today. They seemed to leave out what was best for the people. The president had the right idea, but she cared more about saving people then thinking of an exit strategy, yet the captain had ideas but didn t care about the actual safety of the people. This subject not only creates controversy in the show, but relates back to the real world and the controversy between whether or not our government is actually here to help us, or whether they are just here with their own selfish purposes. The Story of Battlestar Galactica is a deeply intriguing and sub textual story filled with betrayal and fear. The show hits heavy with ethics and the weaknesses and strengths that a government can have when it is thrown into an unknown situation with unknown outcomes. Battlestar Galactica shows the faults in humanity and can show us, as humans, how to overcome some of those faults. Works Cited Battlestar Galactica is a story of betrayal for those who ... • 4. Technology Is The World Of Online Education As the world of online education continues to evolve, schools are incorporating digital learning into their classrooms. Through diversifying learning and opening communication technology has become the most unique way to develop the comprehension the school s desire. Student learning and the outcome of the technology generation has become a common development and looks as though it is here to stay. This paper discusses the pros for technology as the gateway to education, such as: diversity technology gives and individuality and responsibility technology makes students have; however, the most repetitive con this paper discusses and disproves is the idea that technology is a distraction. Technology is one of the most controversial and innovative subjects in recent history. It has been said that it s what will cause us to survive in the near, but distant future. Technology has been entering the realm of education for years now. Some schools are becoming one on one schools where every student has their own computer. The increasing population of ELL students have also come to use technological resources as a way to not only communicate, but to learn the English language. However, there are those who see technology as a distraction or it does not socialize the students. The main argument for technology in the classroom is that emerging students should be able to apply classroom concepts to daily life, and a large part of daily life revolves around technology. ... The philosophical idea of Robert Lewis Bridge of Influence and Proof, from this week s assigned reading provided insight of a methodological approach of ministering evangelistically that deemed appropriate. In all actuality, I was enlighten in that realistically most people who travel from one city (state) to another have come to a point where there was a need to cross over a bridge. The purpose of that bridge was to connect two points together by way of a secure structure that has been considered reliable. • 7. The Film Fight Club By David Fincher The film Fight Club, directed by David Fincher, can be used as an example of a postmodern film. Edward Norton plays the lead, but Edward s Norton s character goes unnamed throughout the entire film; being credited only as The Narrator. As the narrator and a main character, Norton s character is aware that he is in the movie for the majority of the film, but also takes part in the overall storyline. He does that by breaking the fourth wall and interacting with the audience. The entire film is very fast paced and complex, with each scene getting right to the point. There are numerous plots within Fight Club, aside from the actual fighting. The characters in Fight Club are morally ambiguous. Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) has no sense of moral compass. He is introduced as a projectionist, who sneaks pornography into films. He is also a thief, who steals human fat from the liposuction clinic to make soap with. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= T1MckpC_Gc] He shows no mercy when it comes to inflicting pain on others, telling The Narrator to stay with the pain and smacking him upside the face while he chemically burns him. [https://www.youtube.com /watch?v=zvtUrjfnSnA] Later on he is becomes the founder of Fight Club, where men get together and punch each other until they are bloodied beyond recognition. It felt cold and ominous, at some point I realized I was still awake but not really awake in a sense; I couldn t move a single muscle. It was dark and fuzzy but somehow my brain was still conscious and aware that I was in my own bed and proper environment. My entire body was paralyzed I tried moving my body but as hard as I tried I couldn t seem to wake myself up. I eventually figured I should start by moving the smallest muscles in my body. Sleep paralysis and nocturnal attackers are integral to folklore of many countries. It is interesting how vary between cultures, while the main aspect pf the experience remains the same. One of the best documented example of nocturnal attackers are Kanashibari in Japan. The term Kanashibari, meaning to tie with iron rope is derived from the magic of Fudoh Myohoh, a Buddhist God. The idea of being tied up comes from the belief that ancient Buddhist monks could use magic to paralyze others as if there were bound in a metal rope. Even today, many Japanese believe Kahashibari to be cause by evil spirits. In a 1987 study of Japanese respondents, Fukuda et al found the symptons of kanashibari to be identical to those of sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis has been linked to disorders such as narcolepsy, migraines, anxiety disorders, and obstructive sleep apnea. Several circumstances have been identified that are associated with an increase of risk of sleep paralysis. These include insomnia and sleep deprivation, an erratic sleep schedule, stress, overuse of stimulants, physical fatigue, as well as certain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Baldwin s If Beale Street Could Talk In the novel If Beale Street Could Talk, Baldwin creates a unique literary artwork by standing against the norm of that era and taking a stand against things that were once ignored in society. The first way he diverts from normalcy is to write from the perspective of a girl. This is odd because most authors tend to stay within their gender. Most stories tend to be organized in chronological order, however, Baldwin decided to comply to different time elements such as what he does in the case of jumping from the present to a flashback. Another way in which Baldwin casts such a dramatic novel is through the complex internal and external conflicts that revolve around Tish and her family. The perspective, time elements, and conflicts combine to create a truly unique outlook on this epic love story and the ways that religion, sex, family and violence influenced society as of that era. The first manner in which Baldwin addresses his story is through the perspective he uses in choosing Tish, an African Americanfemale, as the main character when Baldwin presides as a male. This method helps us to understand the hardships that African Americans must endure of that era through a relatable character. One example of how Baldwin uses metaphor to explain how people view their race is through the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 14. Cut Carnations Lab Report Abstract The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the influence of various chemicals on the senescence of cut carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus). Treatments involved included a control bleach (0.01% sodium hypochlorite) solution, a diluted sucrose solution (1% sucrose in 0.01% sodium hypochlorite) and a concentrated sucrose solution (3% sucrose in 0.01% sodium hypochlorite), with 4 trials for each treatment. Results showed the most effective solution for prolonging the life of cut carnations was the 3% sucrose solution, as flowers in this solution spend longer times in stages of senescence while only reaching the withering stage of senescence. It can then be said that higher concentration of sugar solutions promotes cut flower longevity.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ethylene sensitivity determines flower longevity and its presence accelerates senescence. I would use a solution of boric acid, and a boric acid/sucrose solution (with 0.01% sodium hypochlorite), to see the effects of just boric acid, and the mixed solution to see the effects of an ethylene inhibitor combined with a nutrient/energy source and antimicrobial agent. An internal combustion engine uses an explosive combustion of fuel to push a piston within a cylinder. The piston moves to turn a crankshaft that is connected to the car s wheels through a drive shaft. Without an engine a car could not move. The internal combustion engine has a long history of how it was improved and redesigned, without which the car would wouldn t be able to function. In 1680 Christiaan Huygens designed an internal combustion engine fueled by gunpowder. Then in 1826 Samuel Brown altered a steam engine to burn gasoline and put it on a carriage. Later Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir patented a double acting, spark ignition internal combustion engine fueled by coal gas in 1858. Then he improved the engine so it would run on petroleum and it was attached to a three wheeled wagon which could travel 50 miles. In 1873 an American engineer named George Brayton developed a two stroke kerosene engine. Then in 1876 Nikolaus August Otto improved the two stroke kerosene engine into the four stroke engine. Something that can never be changed, yet it changed everything for the people involved. It did not only change the daily lives of people, it changed the way people thought about war. Everything from poems to books were changed due to World War I. May Wedderburn Cannan, who was a nurse, knew how deadly wounds were on the battlefield. During World War I, Cannan volunteered with the Oxford Voluntary Aid Detachment and helped publish government propaganda with Clarendon Press. The poem gives an insight to women of World War I and how they longed to hear their loved one s voice. The poem tells a story about a woman who grows weary thinking of what she and her loved one used to do together. She longs to hear his voice and is praying for the time the country is not at war, better known as peacetime. Essay on Management Theories After the end of the Industrial Revolution, large corporations were beginning to grow in size and power in order to satisfy what seemed the endless demands for new goods and services. As corporations and labor forces grew, there was a need to develop a more systematic study of organization and management, known as managementtheory, the significant being Frederick Taylor s Principles of Scientific Management which involved the development of training workers through special incentives and compensation (Boone p.33). In general, early management scientists tended to believe that there was a single way to organize companies and manage employees. The growth or motivational factors in a firm include achievement, recognition, responsibility, and advancement while the dissatisfaction avoidance or hygiene factors consists of extrinsic factors such as administration, supervision, interpersonal relationships, working conditions and salary (Boone p.176). Thus, in attempting to enrich an employee s job, it was necessary for management to reward and recognize personal contribution rather than just giving the employee the opportunity to growth. This school of thought is known as vertical loading was at the time thought of to be more rewarding to employees and increase productivity rather than horizontal loading, which did not concentrate on employees motivational factors. Unlike Herzberg, who focused on employee recognition and rewards, Peter F. Although, there are many differences, there are three that stand out. The three main differences are, the father died in disney s version but did not die in Gimms version, there was no fairy godmother in Grimm s version but there was in Disney s, and in the original version the stepsisters cut their heels and toes off so it would fit in the slipper but in the Disney version they did not. By creating the fairy godmother instead of the magical hazel tree, Disney created more magic in the story which makes it more interesting and fun for the audience. The last difference between the two stories is quite disturbing. In Disney s Cinderella, when it came time to try on the slipper the two stepsisters tried their hardest to squish their feet into it. However, Grimms version is drastically different. Instead of trying to just squish their feet in, one step sister cut the heel of her foot off and the other cut her big toe off. A reason to why Brothers Grimm might have included that part is because they wrote this story in 1812. Disney did not want to have that in their version of the story because of the audience that watches, such as little children and their families. It would not be as enjoyable nor as humorous if they included that gruesome part of Grimm s story. When comparing the Grimm Brothers story and Disney s version, they have three major differences. By Disney changing Cinderella from the original Grimm version, they were taking the dark and twisty parts and changing them into a more enjoyable scene. Archeologists have uncovered various pictures in tombs of ancient Egyptians working on what is believed to be patient s hands and feet (Gillanders pg. 12). Reflexologydates back to 2330 BCE, and has become a very sought after healing treatment for patients of many different illnesses. In the 4th century, a Chinese acupuncturist called Dr. Ko Hung discovered that using his thumbs to apply a deep pressure to the soles of the feet while acupuncture needles were in the place was a means of enhancing healing and encouraging energy to be released . Sometimes reflexology is still referred to as acupuncture without the use of needles (Gillanders pg. 12). It has only become popular in the United States last in the 100 years. Zone therapy was the precursor to modern reflexology, which was reborn through the work of William H Fitzgerald MD in the early 20th century. He was an ear, nose, and throat specialist in the Boston City Hospital in Connecticut. This can be defined as the extent to which a website facilitates efficient and effective shopping, purchasing and delivery (Zeithaml et al., 2000). Over the next four years, it is estimated that the number of online buyers in the UK will rise by over half of the UK s current population, from 26.9 million to 31.8 million (marketresearch.com). Napoleon III was still in power, but during this time, Paris transformed into the Paris that many know today. In Emile Zola s The Belly of Paris, is set in Les Halles, which is the central market in Paris during the 19th century. A major theme in this novel which also helps to describe how Paris changes during this century is the struggle between the fat and the thin. Unlike today, Paris viewed fat people as wealthy and privileged, because they were obviously able to afford luxurious foods. Thin people, on the contrary, were viewed as poverty stricken people who could not afford to eat. Zola describes the main character, Florent: No, hunger had never left him. He wracked his brains, but could not recall a single moment when his stomach had felt full. He had become dry and withered; his stomach seemed to have shrunk; his skin clung to his bones (Zola 12). Unfortunately, 19th century Paris had a large divide between the rich and the poor and it was visible by how fat or thin people were. Although Florent had just arrived in Paris after escaping his arrest, this quote perfectly describes how poverty affected society in 19th century Paris. In addition, this novel also helps to describe the terrible working and living conditions of the poor during this time. A particular family s living conditions is described: It was in the cellars under the poultry market that they found a way of continuing to sleep together. Near the slaughtering blocks were some big baskets of feather in which they could stretch out... Usually they would drag their basket away from the gaslight; they were alone in the strong smell of poultry, kept awake by the sudden crowning of the cocks in the dark (Zola 161).
