In comparing the acts of violence and what they represent in these two stories, I feel it s important
to summarize the events that lead up to the violence.
Jackson s The Lottery begins with a description of a clear and sunny day in June. The narrations

The topic studied in this naturalistic observational research study was called pick me up. The
purpose of this study was to place a note card on the ground labeled pick me up and observe the
type of person that picked the card up. The research question was Which gender will pick up the
card more and which gender will react more? The researchers had three hypotheses: (1) More
women will smile when reading the card than men, (2) More men than women will notice the card
and continue walking, and (3) More men than women will notice the card. Naturalistic
observational research is important because it allows researchers to observe people in a natural
habitat without any variable manipulation. Most importantly in naturalistic observation, the
researcher does not interfere with the situation in any way. Naturalistic observation can be
structured or unstructured; for this study, unstructured naturalistic observation was mostly used.
There were pre determined characteristics that the researchers wrote down on a spreadsheet,
however, specific behaviors were recorded as they happened (i.e., the type of reaction that
resulted from each person who picked up the card). Naturalistic observation is important in
psychological research because it gives insight into the natural behaviors of people. When a
