Student News Programme Review
For this task I produced a radio news programme for E6 Radio aimed at
students aged between 16 to 19, the programme consisted of three
different news stories, one being a copy only news story, one being an
interview regarding youth mental health and the other a human
interest story.
The first story I produced was a copy only story in regards to a witness
appeal due to a woman falling of a bridge in Eccles who sadly passed
away, before producing this news story I conducted thorough
secondary research into the events, looking at a range of local news
papers. The purpose of this particular news story was serious and
informative, providing them with not only the information regarding
what had happened but also due to it being a witness appeal
providing the audience with contact details if they had been around
the area or had seen anything. I feel that this story was suitable for the
intended target audience due to the fact that it is breaking news
relating to a serious incident which had happened in a local area
where many of the students that listen to E6 radio live, therefore not
only are these students interested in local news stories but also due to it
being a witness appeal there is also a possibility that at least one of the
students listening could have some information that could help
detectives.
The second story I produced was about youth mental health, including
an interview with the councillor from Salford City College, the sole
purpose of this particular story was informative, providing the listeners
with all the information necessary if they felt they were struggling and
needed support. Before producing this news story I conducted
thorough research into the various mental health problems amongst
young people as well as gathering statistics. Again I feel that this story
was suitable for the intended target audience due to the fact that
over the years there has been a large increase in mental health
problems amongst young people and a lot of students tend to struggle
particularly at this time of year due to exam stress and therefore tend
to need a little bit of extra support. By conducting an interview with the
college councillor Carol Doherty, I was able to gather enough
information to present to the intended target audience informing them
about what help the college can offer anyone struggling, what kind of
problems the councillor can help with and also how to arrange an
appointment to speak to the councillor if necessary, all of which
appeals directly to the intended target audience, students aged
between 16 to 19.
The final story I produced was a human interest story, in which I
interviewed Damen Bramwell in regards to him leaving Salford City
College, the sole purpose of this interview was entertainment and
again I feel that this was a suitable news story for the intended target
audience due to the fact that the story was produced for E6 Radio
which Damen helped establish and also many students who listen to E6
Radio are aware of Damens departure and may be curious to find out
more. Although I feel that this interview was good, I do feel that I could
have conducted it better.
In terms of the sound quality of the audio I feel that the audio
throughout the news programme was of good quality and you can
clearly understand what I am saying, I attempted to deliver each news
story in a serious manner, particularly the first copy news story due to it
dealing with a serious incident, however I do feel that I could have
improved this by delivering it in a more optimistic and professional
manner, as well as improving my articulation on certain occasions.
Although I feel my accent throughout makes me sound less
professional, I do feel that this isn't necessarily a bad thing due to the
intended target audience being students from Salford who will find this
accent more familiar.
In terms of editing I feel that I effectively pieced together all three news
stories, however I do feel that I could have improved the introduction
to the third news story, also I feel that if I was to do this task again I
would close the show rather than just ending after the final interview. I
also feel that I should have cut out some un important information from
both interview stories therefore making them a little less time
consuming.
