Good Morning Oldham, it’s 8.53 and here is your morning news report.
Abbie: News Presenter:
Are smartphones deemed a danger within college grounds? Is there enough for youths to do in
Oldham? And what’s the most random text message you’ve ever received?
*insert background music here*
The study from Women’s Aid warns that smart phones can install spyware in less than 5 minutes to
find out much about a person by their phone. We sent our education correspondent, Sophie
Message to speak to Vice Principal of Oldham Sixth Form College, about the dangers of smart
phones within the college.
Sophie: Reporter:
I’m here at OSFC to speak to the vice principle Mick Walsh about this issue. I will ask him whether
smart phones are problematic within the college.
Mick Walsh:
i mean I think the smart phones we have a slight issue in college as you probably know we don’t
allow students to access facebook in college but of course now that so many students have got
smart phones they can access it through them. So I think in a way yes smart phones, im not sure id
call smart phones a problem because I think they can be a very good er you know a good sort of
piece of technology and can be used very positively but I think that they have issues both the young
people and for us as a college and how that’s managed.
Gemma: Specialist Reporter:
I also asked him whether he believes young people are aware of the dangers involved with social
networking.
Mick Walsh:
Depends really, I think some are and some aren’t. I think there’s always a job for colleges to do in
raising awareness for young people. And there’s kind of two sides to it really, there’s making them
aware of the dangers to themselves and er you know not giving away personal information. But it’s
also I think about young people knowing er how things they can do can inpact on other people
perhaps accidently, comments they can make can be quite hurtful to other people and so its sort
both sides of the coin really but erm, yeah it varies.
I think from a point of view from a college such as ourselves I think its religious er trying to get the
information out to students. We’ve recently published er our E safety policy for students and in
Oldham there was E safety week and we sort of tried to raise awareness through that. I think if im
being honest theres probably more that we can do we sort of touch on it in tutorial er but I think we
2. could get a stronger message across and have some specific. It is just getting the message across
really.
Abbie: News Presenter:
In other news, anti-social behaviour is again reported to be on the rise and the clichéd reason being
“youths have nothing to do”. Our news correspondent, Gemma Mills, visited the Oldham Lyceum,
where she spoke to Musical Director Martin Ashurst, to see if there is enough for young people to do
in Oldham.
Martin Ashurst:
Absolutely, yeah. The music centre that I’m concerned with has a load of kids coming through the
door between 4o’clock and 9o’clock in the evening. We have orchestras, choirs, we have a string
choirtet, and we’ve got brass groups, woodwind groups, theirs the youth orchestra. I personally run
the popular music stuff which there’s a band that are rehearsing now, which is five young lads, who
are writing their own stuff doing some covers. We also have a Rockestra which is kind of an
introduction group where we might have nine guitarists, a couple of drummers, a few keyboard
players at different times and different variations of musicians and I see that as a kind of half-way
house from learning their instruments and playing in their bedrooms to getting into a band. And
some of the less abled ones are able to be helped by the others
Abbie: News Presenter:
Whilst there she also spoke to some of the students to find out what they would be doing if they
weren’t there.
Gemma: Specialist Reporter:
I’m here at the Lyceum to see if the reports about young people having nothing to do are true.
Vox Pops:
Without this music centre, how would you be spending your free time?
“Id just be er on the streets doing nothing”
“Yeah im a bit of a bum id just be on the xbox”
How did you hear about the music centre?
“Erm, well I got sent by my drum teacher quite a few years ago, but heard about Rockestra
from my friends”
How long have you been coming here?
“ Erm, been coming about a year”
“Er, two years? I think its like two years”
Do you enjoy spending evenings here?
“Its good fun and exciting”
3. “ I really enjoy it cause I get to show off in front of these lot”
Gemma: Specialist Reporter:
So, positive things happening in Oldham, now back to the studio
Abbie: News Presenter:
And finally, we took to the streets of Oldham and asked a selection of people about the most
random text messages they have ever received.

“Ask the drunk lady for some internet”
“Her perm intimidates me”
“Forever Alone”
“Erm, I think it would have to be curse you all, that was pretty random”
“Erm, probably the snail is hilarious”
Abbie: Specialist Presenter:
