24. Our results showed that students prefer to listen to the radio during the weekdays . Students also preferred to listen to the radio more during the evening . Taking the results into consideration we decided to air our radio station every week day at 6pm.
We wanted our newscast to be unique and different from other newscasts so we made sure that we produced our own music. However we did not want to move too away from the music which is usually associated with the news, so we kept the dramatic beats. The weather forecast also follows the news in most newscasts so we did this as well to keep a sense of structure.
We have used some of the forms and conventions of real media products for example we like any other newscast give a weather forecast straight after the news. We also keep the music for the newscast upbeat, but to make our newscast unique we added our own personal touch to the music.
Seeing as our target audience is young people we wanted to represent them in a positive way. We challenge real media products as we break the usual stereotypes associated with young people. Instead of always representing the young in a negative way we do the opposite and portray the young as playing an important role in society.
As part of our newscast we also provide local news. Although we did not want to represent young people in a negative way, knife crime is still an issue amongst young people especially, however we also represent young people as being the victim of crime. We represent the police as trying hard to pursue justice.
In the news story about who the potential young mayor could be, we represent the young as being very mature and responsible. We wanted to break the stereotype that young people are irresponsible and donât care about politics.
In our news story about the rise in unemployment we represent the young as being deeply affected by unemployment. We show that the young people do care about working and aspire to do well in their career.
We wanted a news story that was different from the usual news stories, so we did a food review on a local restaurant. Being students ourselves we understand how stressful it is and so we decided that we should provide advice on places where students could go and relax. We represent young people as being under a lot stress, we also represent them as being open minded and willing to try new things.
We also wanted to create a story that would entertain young people so as part of our entertainment news we provided the latest x-factor update. This story represents young people as being very optimistic, and eager to achieve more.
Overall our main aim of our newscast was to represent young people in a good light. Seeing as young people are our target audience we wanted to represent them in a way that they would be proud of.
BBC Radio 1 is a British national radio station operated by the BBC which also broadcasts internationally, specialising in current popular music and chart hits throughout the day. Radio 1 provides alternative genres after 7:00pm including electronic dance, hip hop, rock or interviews. It is aimed primarily at the 15â29 age group.
Our radio station is similar to radio 1 in two ways, our target audience is also young people and we provide alternative genres of music too.
Like radio 1 we specifically target the younger generation as we found that there is not enough radio stations for young people. We make sure that our choice of topic is interesting for the young, we make our audience feel involved and give a voice to the young by allowing them to comment and discuss issues with us.
To find a suitable audience for our radio station we carried out questionnaires to find out the general pattern with radio. We focused on peopleâs age, gender geographic location, news interest, and the time of day they would prefer to listen to the radio.
We found that in general people aged 16-21 were least likely to listen to the radio it is mainly the older generally that dominate the radio listening figures.
Women were also more likely to listen to the radio than men, and people from East London were the least likely to listen to the radio.
Our results showed that there was a big age gap between the listening figures in radio. We realized that young people did not listen to the radio because there were not enough radio stations directly aimed for young people. We wanted to stop this trend and so we collectively decided that our target audience should be the young.
Once we decided to aim our radio station to young people, focusing on students, we investigated further. We wanted to find out when students were most likely to listen to the radio. Our results showed that students preferred to listen to the radio during weekdays more during the evening. Being a student myself I would agree as the evenings is usually when students relax.
We also investigated what topics interested young people, out of all the choices of topic which were: music, celebrity gossip, educational advice, personal advice, fashion, advice, special guest interviews, local news, global news, and live studio chat, people most like the idea of special guest interviews, educational advice and live studio chats.
Having reviewed all the information we decided that our main aims of our radio station was: (above)
For our radio station to appeal to young people we needed to discuss topics that young people could relate to. We provided a wide range of topics varying from entertainment news to political news i.e. Young mayor election updates.
The main feature of our newscast was our contemporary music which was played whilst the headlines were being read out. The music would appeal to our young audience as it has an edge to it. We also have our very own weather jingle, again this makes our newscast unique. To add a sense of realism to our outside broadcast which was in the x-factor studio, we added crowd cheering in the background.
Technology has allowed people to become producers as well as consumers. More people are using digital radio as it has become cheaper and widely available. Figures show that by 2010 half the population will be using digital radio and this figure will grow.
Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) is a digital radio technology for broadcasting radio stations DAB offers more stations in the same broadcast spectrum than analogue FM radio. It is more robust towards noise and multipath fading that is a common problem in mobile reception. Approximately 1,000 stations worldwide broadcast in the DAB format. (2006).
A DAB radio allows for much easier listening experience because it avoids issues with better or worse reception/tuning. Unlike analogue where the frequency varies for different parts of the UK.
DAB radios automatically tune to all the available stations, offering a list of all stations. DAB broadcast many channels over one transmitter which lowers maintenance and transmission costs radically when compared to FM In certain areas â particularly rural areas â the introduction of DAB gives radio listeners a greater choice of radio stations. There is no hiss with a weak signal, which can happen on FM The specialized nature and cost of DAB broadcasting equipment provide barriers to pirate radio stations broadcasting on DAB. Parallel medium Is a medium which allows you to access technology whilst performing other tasks for e.g. you could listen to the radio while washing the dishes. However the reception quality on DAB can be poor even for people that live well within the coverage area. As DAB is at a relatively early stage of deployment, DAB coverage is poor in nearly all countries in comparison to the high population coverage provided by FM Transmission on DAB is far more expensive than on FM,
Convergence describes two phenomena: first, technologies coming together, for example the wii is not only a games console but you are also able to us the internet on the wii. And second: media industries are expanding so they produce and distribute across several media for example- a newspaper with an online version. A limitation of this is- even television channels are turning to platforms other than television to reach their audience, for example, the rise of internet based- channels. This is also the case with radio as most radio stations are now available online.

It is developed by Apple Inc., and is included in all shipments of life Logic Studio is a music production suite by Apple Inc.. The first version of Logic Studio was unveiled on September 12, 2007.
I have developed many knew skills during this task, my knowledge and understanding on issues concerning the mass media and radio has also developed. I have learnt new media terminologies such as parallel medium, convergence etc. My understanding on how radio stations and mass media in general function has also grown. I have also learnt how to use new equipment and software's which i was unable to use before this task.
