This document discusses the use of structuration theory in information systems research. It covers several key points:
1) Structuration theory examines the relationship between individuals and society, and how the two are interdependent rather than independent.
2) While Giddens did not focus on technology, structuration theory is believed to have potential for understanding the role of technology in society.
3) Studies using structuration theory in IS research have often misinterpreted or selectively used Giddens' original ideas, failing to consider his full theoretical perspectives.
Introducing the basics of the Structurational theory whose author was Anthony Giddens. What's covered include; the key concepts, historical background, detailed breakdown, assumptions, strengths and weaknesses of the theory.
This presentation is on Indian contemporary sociological thinker named Akshay Ramanlal Desai. Desai alone among Indian sociologists has consistently applied Marxist methods in his treatment of Indian social structure and its processes. He is a doctrinaire Marxist. He rejects any interpretations of tradition with reference to religion, rituals and festivities. It is essentially a secular phenomenon.

Testing Paradigms and Assumptions Against Empirical Evidence
Neither normative nor descriptive modeling, as currently constituted, can achieve scientific objectivity. Within the statistical paradigm of quantitative & qualitative research, assumptions, values, & beliefs are not rigorously corresponded to empirical systems. Conversions of meaning to numbers and numbers to meaning rely on social constructions, not empirical evidence. This creates subjectivity in computations. Only the linguistic rigor of basic math can re-establish computational legitimacy.
A happier technology-enhanced PhD? Value-sensitive design of single-case l...lprisan
Worldwide, about half of the students who start a doctorate never complete it, and the prevalence of mental health problems (e.g. anxiety, depression) among them is higher than in the general population. These problems, which affect hundreds of thousands of students worldwide, are linked to systemic and socio-economic issues over which students themselves have little control... but also to motivational and socio-emotional skills over which students may have more control. A key aspect of these problems with the doctorate, and the lack of reliable and scalable solutions to mitigate them, is the inherent uniqueness of the doctorate. This webinar will look at recent research in doctoral education on these motivational factors, as well as recent work where we are designing and implementing Learning Analytics (LA) systems that aim to harness these motivational factors to support doctoral students. The resulting human-AI collaboration approach uses analytical methods specifically designed to address the contextual challenges of doctoral education, its uniqueness and heterogeneity among others. Importantly, these systems are designed from a human-centered perspective using value-sensitive design (VSD) methods - an approach that is particularly relevant given the ethical nature of the problem. Thus, the talk can also serve as an example of how these techniques from the field of human-computer interaction and AI ethics can be applied to increase the acceptance and trustworthiness of LA and AI-based learning technologies.
The Relationship Between Organizational Theory & Behavior TheoryMaurice Dawson
This reaction paper will exhibit when organizational theories and behavioral theories are not aligned properly, an organization will become unmotivated, chaotic, and misguided. Through selections of various authors, these theories will be explained more in depth and how they relate to each other.
Paper presented by Teun Zuiderent-Jerak and Ernst Thoutenhoofd to the Institute for Science, Innovation and Society, Saïd Business School, Oxford University, 18 March 2010.

You will turn in a one-page single spaced paper proposal for your paper.
In the research proposal, you must identify the information you will be presenting in your paper and provide suggestions for how you are going to support your claims. This is both to encourage you to be thinking about your paper early on in the semester and to give me an opportunity to provide you with feedback and resources that may help you along the way.
You should also look at the paper assignment instructions and rubric for guidance on how to frame the project.
While significant portions of your paper may change before the final copy if you decide that you need/want to change the entire topic of your paper I expect that you will meet with me before hand to explain why.
Theory
What are the important aspects of the IR theory that you will be covering in your paper? What are the things most crucial to the theory that you will have to address?
Event:
Which event are you going to cover? Briefly outline what you think the important aspects of the
Sources:
You should include enough relevant literature (sources) to indicate that there is sufficient information available to indicate that you are familiar with the important aspects of the institution you have chosen. These sources must be appropriate academic sources. (See powerpoint from the lecture on the first week of class)
Application:
Your proposal should also indicate that you have thought about the direction of your paper and how you will apply the theory to the event. What are the aspects of the event that clearly fit into the IR theory? What does the theory not explain?

Running head: POLITICAL SCIENCE
Paper proposalPaper proposal
International relations theory is a study for intergovernmental studies at the theoretical perspective (McGlinchey, Walters, & Gold, 2017). The approach tries to explain how to analyze international education. IR theory is an adherent of constructivist, Marxist, and realism idea.
Liberalism, realism, and constructivism are the main building blocks of the argument
(McGlinchey, Walters, & Gold, 2017). IR theory can be divided into two main categories, which include rationalist and reflectivist ideas. Rationalist theory is the principle that tries to address the state-level and how there are relations between countries (McGlinchey, Walters, & Gold, 2017). Besides, reflectivist expands the meaning of security with specific aspects of gender, class, postcolonial conditions. The paper discusses the International relations Theory and how its essential elements.
The Important Aspects of International Relations Theory
IR theory has two main classifications that create its aspects and other subcategories. Realism, as part of the approach, discusses how the element of Neorealism can be used in international integration (McGlinchey, Walters, & Gold, 2017). Besides, Liberalism as the aspect of IR theory is made up of three main categories that give a vivid description of ...
This note describes our analysis of 35 papers from CHI 2011 that aim to improve or support interaction design practice. In our analysis, we characterize how these CHI authors conceptualize design practice and the types of contributions they propose. This work is motivated by the recognition that design methods proposed by HCI researchers often do not fit the needs and constraints of professional design practice. As a complement to the analysis of the CHI papers we also interviewed 13 practitioners about their attitudes towards learning new methods and approaches. We conclude the note by offering some critical reflections about how HCI research can better support actual design practice.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Gidden's structuration theory
1. Gidden’s structuration theory and
information systems research
Jones, M. R. & Karsten, H. (2008). MIS Quarterly,
32(1), 127-157
22.10.2014
Alfatika Aunuriella Dini & Aleksandra Lazareva
2. Structuration theory
• a general theory of social organization rather than a theory
specific to IS
• the central issue in the theory is relations between an
individual (agency) and society (structure), and the idea is
that the two are mutually interdependent
• Giddens didn’t focus on technology in his theory, but it’s
believed to have a lot of potential in IS research
• the idea is not that technology can’t have any influence on
society, but that its effect depends on what humans do with it
• it’s been one of the most influential theoretical paradigms in
IS recently
3. Use of structuration theory in the IS research
AST
• if group interaction processes don’t correspond to the
structural features of the technology, outcomes are less
predictable and probably less favorable
Duality of technology
• although technology is a material artifact, it should not be
focused on just as a physical object. It should be more like
an artifact which is the outcome of human action,
something that is created and changed by human, but also
used by human to do some action
4. Critical engagement with the structuration theory
• increasing number of studies are based on secondary
literature (IS-specific versions of the theory), which indicates
that Giddens’s original ideas are sort of misinterpreted
• there’s no cumulative tradition
• only a small part of those works take into account more than
a few key points of Giddens’s theory: mainly the works use
the theory generally OR just specific concepts
• Giddens criticizes objectivism and naturalism, but the IS
research “assumes an epistemological equivalence between
the social and natural sciences” which “is at odds with
central principles of Giddens’s position” (Jones & Karsten
2008, p. 145)
5. Suggested questions for discussion
• How is it possible to use a theory selectively without harming
the credibility of the study?
• How to pick the right theory for your study if there are a few
theories that cover relevant aspects/ concepts/ processes for
your case?
• What may be the reasons for people’s non-use of technology?
Can some of those be explained by the structuration theory?
