 STRESS MANAGEMENT IN POLICE DEPT.
What is stress?
 Stress is the imbalance created in a
persons body due to some problems or
some unfavourable situations or work
demands posed on him.
 So Stress is actually the thing that
makes the mind and body respond to the
external things in order to finish it or get
out of it.
So as Stress is making us respond to the
external pressures then it must be a
good thing.
 Too much of anything is too bad !
 And so is with the Stress too!
 So the stress is divided into
1. Positive stress
2. Negative stress
1. Positive stress : when the stress is at
an optimal level it is called Positive
stress.
Positive stress does the following things
 Motivates, Focuses energy
 Feels exciting
 Improves performance
 It helps to increase our abilities
2. Negative Stress or Distress : When the
stress goes beyond the optimal range
then it is called Negative stress.
Negative stress does the following things
 Causes anxiety
 Feels Unpleasant
 Decreases performance
 It will also effect the health and may
cause severe disorders.
 Hyper tension
 Heart diseases
 Skin diseases
 Alcoholism
 Drug addiction
 Loss of Memory
 Faster Breathing
We have seen that Stress is good as well
as bad!
So in order to be Happy, to feel pleasant
and to improve our performance we
need to keep stress into the optimal
range.
And this act of keeping the Stress at the
optimal point is called Stress
Management.
 To manage Stress first we need to know
about the causes and the one which
causes Stress is called Stressor.
 The stressor are of two types
1. External stressor
2. Internal stressor
External Stressor
 Physical Environment
 Social Interaction with people
 Boss’s pressure
 Life events on which we don’t have
control(ex: death)
Internal stressor
 Personal lifestyle choice
 Personal conflicts
 Individual thought process (over-
analyzing)
 Pessimistic thinking
 Insecurity of Job
Following are the strategies of managing
stress:
1. Awareness : we must be aware of the
factors causing stress.
2. Organized : we must plan and organize
our work so that we get time to relax
and avoid stress.
3. Don’t postpone action : Delaying work
gives a scope for stress.
4. Laughter : Try to laugh even at worst
situations of life, this will relax you and
boots immune system.
5. Get a Hobby : when you do what you
love then it helps you to divert your
mind from unwanted stress.
6. Deep Breathing : It brings back your
tensed body to the normal condition.
7. Take short breaks: Taking short breaks
in between works boost your energy.
8. Sleepwell : A proper sleep of atleast 6hours
is must for a person to be relax and calm.
9. Exercise : Daily exercise will burn of the
stress chemicals in the body.
10. Forgive and forget : This is the most
important thing one should to reduce stress,
forgiving and forgetting earns person love,
respect and harmony which will directly kills
the stress.
The Police Men in particular goes through a very
much stressful life, they must adopt the
following things to avoid stress :
 Keep learning about the law.
 Communicate with your friends.
 Have a support system.
 Exercise.
 Enlist psychological help.
 Believe in something.
 Practice gratitude.
 Prioritize sleep.
 Meditation.
