Stress refers to a particular state of mind which occurs due to some interaction between him & the environment
Burnout is a stage when stress becomes deep-rooted within us.
Workers who experience burnout may no longer view their job as meaningful.
For them work is insignificant & they become bore & there is lack of creativity, enthusiasm & moral.
As a result there is decrease in production & profit.
3. The word stress comes from the Latin word
‘Stringere’ which means hardship.
Hans Selye coined the term ‘stress’ which

stressful situation.
Stress refers to a particular state of mind
which occurs due to some interaction
between him & the environment.
4. According to Spielberger, Stress is an
interaction between the coping skills of
individual & the demands of his environment.
In Physics, it is a force which acts on a body
to produce strain (damage).
In Psychology, stress refers to a particular
kind of state of the organization of the
human mind from some interaction between
him & the environment.
6. Eustress is also known as good or positive
stress.
It is a stress which comes in good situations.
For example, before joining a new company,
employee feels happy & excited & stressful by
thinking about new working environment.
Distress is something negative which can be
the root cause of illness. We all are over
familiar with it.
7. There are some tangible effects on the basis
of which we can measure stress.
For example, blood pressure, heart beats
etc.
Other measurable aspects are sickness,
early retirement, absenteeism, accident,
injury etc.
The non-measurable costs of stress are slow
or poor performance, bad decision, poor
time mgt etc.
8. Stress starts from both mind & body &
affects .
Stress tolerance is different from person to
person.
Heavy labor jobs physically refresh a person
due to physical stress.
Most of modern jobs today require no
physical effort & more mental stress.
9. There are many situations which are
controllable.
For example, managing self, putting efforts
in project, preparing for examination etc.
There are many situations which are
uncontrollable.
Such as – downsizing, take over of
company, any type of uncertainty etc.
10. A major stress for one person may be
treated lightly by the other.
For example, for some persons, being
punctual is very important. They get stressed
out if they are getting late whereas some
people are cool about getting delayed for an
important appointment.
11. Stress occurs when there is incompatibility
between personal & professional life.
Work can not be avoided & family can not be
the secondary need.
At workplace, culture of the organization,
work overload, demanding boss, unpleasant
colleague are some of the stressors.
12. Unnecessarily at times we get stressed out
because of faulty, irrational & illogical thoughts.
For example, many viewers get so involved in
TV serials they watch. They feel anxious along
with the serial characters.
Example, in case of cricket lovers they borrow
stress for match.
Genuine stress is real.
For example, loosing a job, going away from
family etc.
13. We can avoid specific stress by ignoring it.
For example, handling an unsatisfied client
can be avoided by transferring the account
to fellow salesman, who can handle it better.
Similarly we can not avoid our job related
stress which comes under our responsibility.
14. It has to be understood that no stress is
unmanageable.
One has to learn to deal with it.
Once we understand that ‘being
stressed out is injurious to health’ we can
easily manage stress for ourselves.
15. The work of Dr. K.N. Udupa of Banaras Hindu
University was published in Quarterly Journal,
Surgical Science, 1977.
He suggested that stress related disorders
evolve gradually through different stages.
These are-
Psychological symptoms
Physical symptoms
Biological imbalance
Detectable symptom
16. Due to over stimulation of the sympathetic
nervous system, psychological changes
arise.
These are anxiety, irritability & insomnia.
The second stage, is high blood pressure,
heart problem etc.
17. In the third stage, there is more physical
imbalance.
In the fourth stage harmful change in the
tissue of an organ appears which requires
surgical or long term treatment.
18.
19. Burnout is a stage when stress becomes
deep-rooted within us.
Workers who experience burnout may no
longer view their job as meaningful.
For them work is insignificant & they become
bore & there is lack of creativity, enthusiasm
& moral.
As a result there is decrease in production &
profit.
20. Stress management strategies can be
broadly categorized into 2 parts.
Individual level strategies
Organizational level strategies
21.
22. Definite objectives for self
Plan your life
Social support
Physical fitness
Biofeedback
Yoga
Meditation
Time management
Live a simple life
23. Setting up of objective for self is a continuous
process starts from childhood.
We can set our objectives on the basis of our
knowledge, skill, ability, strength, weakness,
liking, disliking etc.
It is generally observed that individuals set high
objective for themselves to be achieved in short
span of time which brings stress.
So we have to focus on our available resources
& make our objective SMART.
24. Work stress has an impact on personal life &
vice-versa.
So we have to make a balance in between
personal & professional life.
We have to enhance our competency & at
the same time focus on our family.
As uncertainty is every where, we also invest
in insurance.
25. It is always important to keep close rapport
with relatives & friends so that we can satisfy
our social need.
As a man can not live in isolation social
support helps him to be free from stress.
Old age homes, citizens, committees,
religious organizations are signs of stress
resolution strategies.
26. Healthy body & mind are stress resistance.
Regular physical exercises like walking,
jogging, skipping etc.
For example, soldiers are definitely more
stress resistant as they keep themselves
physically fit.
27. It is the methodology designed to remove
undesirable body responses through
psychological transformation.
Use of sophisticated electronics devices are
designed to measure the level of stress in an
individual.
The relaxation exercises are helpful to
control heart attacks, acidity, brain
hemorrhage, blood pressure & muscle
tension.
29. It is one of the methods of reducing stress.
Everybody has to play various rolls in life.
It is therefore necessary to plan the time
properly.
Time management can be for various
events such as- education, career etc.
30. We can be free from stress if we think
everything in a simple manner.
One should not complicate issues rather
provide simple solutions.
Focus on positive aspects of life.
31.
32. Do not make professional goals too high which
is beyond the capacity.
Organization’s policies should be clearly
defined.
Authority & responsibility & communication
channels should be clear.
Management must create healthy & cordial
environment in organization.
Employees should be provided with suitable
time for counseling & recreational facilities.
