3. Strabismus
 Among these childhood vision problems is a condition
known as strabismus. This condition occurs when a
child’s eyes do not line up correctly and may result in
one or both eyes turning inward, outward, up, or down
at any given time. Though it is normal for infants’ eyes
to cross or wander occasionally as they develop
muscles over the course the first 4 to 6 months of life,
the presence of a wandering eye after this stage of
life can signal larger problems.
When caught in its early stages, strabismus may be
treated effectively through the prescription of
eyeglasses or through the use of patching to help a
child’s weaker eye muscle gain strength. Parents may
also be instructed to help the child engage in play that
allows him or her to develop hand-eye coordination
skills.
