Steven Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a rare but severe drug reaction and skin disease characterized by painful rashes and blistering of the skin and mucous membranes. It begins with flu-like symptoms and spreads to cause erosion of the skin and mouth. SJS is caused by certain infections or drug reactions, especially antibiotics like penicillin or pain medications like diclofenac. It requires removing the triggering cause, providing supportive care including fluids and antibiotics, and managing complications like vision loss which can be permanent. SJS ranges in severity from minor cases with under 10% body surface area detachment to toxic epidermal necrolysis with over 30% detachment which is life-threatening.
