Stephen Hawking is an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author. He conducted seminal research on gravitational singularity theorems and predicted that black holes emit radiation. Hawking was the first to set forth a theory of cosmology explained by a union of general relativity and quantum mechanics. He suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis but has achieved both scientific and commercial success, including his bestselling book A Brief History of Time.
