Redesigning the PE
experience
STAGE 1: EMPATHIZE
Agree on who the audience is.
The audience for this issue involves students, faculty, and community
members of the New Jerusalem School District.
Build Empathy:
When I began this project, I called attention to my students during PE one
day and asked them to look around and observe the environment around
them. When I asked them to describe their observations, they used words
similar to chaos, disorganized, hectic, stressful, and frustrating.
Prioritize this project in terms of urgency.
This is a serious safety issue.
STAGE 2: DEFINE
Decide what issue you are trying to resolve.
The issue I will be solving at my school campus is the chaos during PE
at the end of the day. There are roughly 180 students on the field. In
addition, there are 4 different schools that are on the same campus.
Therefore, I am not entirely sure which school each class belongs to.
Determine what will make this project successful.
The success of this project is determined by the communication and
willingness to solve the problem between all teachers out at PE during
the end of the day, as well as the administrators of the four
campuses.
STAGE 3: IDEATION
Problem we are trying to resolve: Physical education should be a fun
and engaging class period that increases student’s heart rate. The
class should also allow students to build relationships, develop
teamwork, and sportsmanship. Currently, the physical education is
chaotic and stressful for students and staff.
Challenge: Redesign the PE experience at New Jerusalem School
Point of View: Teacher, supervising 60 of her own students with the
help of an aide, plans her PE period, only for it to be interrupted by
an overwhelming amount of students outside her own class and a
field with limited space
HMW have students assist in supervision?
HMW have the students communicate more efficiently with students
from the other classes?
STAGE 4: PROTOTYPE
Involvement: All staff and students with last period PE
Timeline: 1 month
Materials needed: determined through survey
Community needs: bridge the gap between the districts
STAGE 5: TEST AND LEARN
Data and feedback: Student (user) created survey
Goals: 80% positive student feedback
5/6 positive teacher feedback
Success: Measured through observation of student engagement
21ST CENTURY SKILLS
Communication:
Explore the different forms of communication that can be used
during this design. This may include googledocs or email. It may also
include a different form of communication that my students
suggest.
Creativity:
Creativity is key to the success of this design due to the limited
space. The prototype will need to consider the field, blacktop, and the
reservation of both gyms.

  • 1. STEM 352 FINAL PROJECT JUSTINE SARES Redesigning the PE experience
  • 2. STAGE 1: EMPATHIZE Agree on who the audience is. The audience for this issue involves students, faculty, and community members of the New Jerusalem School District. Build Empathy: When I began this project, I called attention to my students during PE one day and asked them to look around and observe the environment around them. When I asked them to describe their observations, they used words similar to chaos, disorganized, hectic, stressful, and frustrating. Prioritize this project in terms of urgency. This is a serious safety issue.
  • 3. STAGE 2: DEFINE Decide what issue you are trying to resolve. The issue I will be solving at my school campus is the chaos during PE at the end of the day. There are roughly 180 students on the field. In addition, there are 4 different schools that are on the same campus. Therefore, I am not entirely sure which school each class belongs to. Determine what will make this project successful. The success of this project is determined by the communication and willingness to solve the problem between all teachers out at PE during the end of the day, as well as the administrators of the four campuses.
  • 4. STAGE 3: IDEATION Problem we are trying to resolve: Physical education should be a fun and engaging class period that increases student’s heart rate. The class should also allow students to build relationships, develop teamwork, and sportsmanship. Currently, the physical education is chaotic and stressful for students and staff. Challenge: Redesign the PE experience at New Jerusalem School Point of View: Teacher, supervising 60 of her own students with the help of an aide, plans her PE period, only for it to be interrupted by an overwhelming amount of students outside her own class and a field with limited space HMW have students assist in supervision? HMW have the students communicate more efficiently with students from the other classes?
  • 5. STAGE 4: PROTOTYPE Involvement: All staff and students with last period PE Timeline: 1 month Materials needed: determined through survey Community needs: bridge the gap between the districts
  • 6. STAGE 5: TEST AND LEARN Data and feedback: Student (user) created survey Goals: 80% positive student feedback 5/6 positive teacher feedback Success: Measured through observation of student engagement
  • 7. 21ST CENTURY SKILLS Communication: Explore the different forms of communication that can be used during this design. This may include googledocs or email. It may also include a different form of communication that my students suggest. Creativity: Creativity is key to the success of this design due to the limited space. The prototype will need to consider the field, blacktop, and the reservation of both gyms.
