The 2012 report marks the beginning of longitudinal data and analysis, drawing from the first iteration of the project in 2010.

Evaluation: Finding a Common Ground
In July 2013, Innovation Network's Kat Athanasiades and Veena Pankaj presented "Evaluation: Finding a Common Ground" at the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The purpose of this session was to highlight the common threads that distinguish regional associations from other organizational genres in the social sector. Regional associations promote effectiveness in philanthropy by providing grantmakers with opportunities to engage with others, share ideas, and generate best practices that support both the individual and collective impact of philanthropy. While each regional association employs its own unique mix of strategies to achieve impact, most are working towards a shared goal of promoting effectiveness within philanthropy. In this session, Innovation Network engaged participants in a group dialogue to draw out high level strategies and desired outcomes that are common across most regional associations. The resulting logic model is a tool that regional associations can use as a starting point when planning for evaluation.

Should community change efforts be focused on funding coalitions or funding a flexible group of community leaders? The Kansas Health Foundation has embraced a four-pronged community change model that targets community leaders as key agents of change within each of their funded communities. Innovation Network, the evaluation partner for the Kansas Health Foundation's Healthy Communities Initiative, developed and deployed an assessment tool designed to contribute to the assessment of leadership capacity in effecting community change.
In this presentation at the American Evaluation Association's annual conference in Washington, D.C., Kat Athanasaides and Veena Pankaj (Innovation Network) and Deanna Van Hersh (The Kansas Health Foundation) shared lessons learned about developing and deploying a capacity assessment tool. They also discussed what these tools can -- and cannot -- tell you about a coalition's capacity in conducting community change work.
Data Placemats: Construction and Practical Design Tips
Increasing stakeholder involvement throughout the evaluation lifecycle, not only enhances stakeholder buy-in to the final evaluation results, but it also ensures that the evaluator is taking into consideration multiple viewpoints to be able to provide a more comprehensive picture of a program or initiative. Data placemats, a data viz technique to improve stakeholder understanding of data, can be used to communicate preliminary evaluation results during the analysis phase of the evaluation life cycle. When done correctly, it offers stakeholders an opportunity to form their own judgments about the data and weigh in prior to the final report. In this session, the presenter will review the concept of data placemats, focusing specifically on the nuts and bolts of constructing a data placemat.

Understanding the Public Policy Landscape: Lessons From a Retrospective Evalu...
These slides accompanied a presentation at the American Evaluation Association's annual conference in October 2013 in Washington, DC.
Innovation Network evaluators Veena Pankaj and Kat Athanasiades discussed how the Framework for Public Policy Advocacy was used in a retrospective evaluation of a large scale philanthropic public policy campaign. The framework helped to identify and plot grantee strategies across two dimensions - target audience(s) and desired outcomes. Using bubble charts to illustrate the strategic focus of each grantee, the evaluation team was able to recognize trends among the grantee partners, identify gaps and provide an aggregate overview of the types of strategies being supported. Presenters highlighted how the framework was used in selecting and developing appropriate data collection methodologies based on the strategic focus of the grantees. These methodologies were created to specifically correspond to the outcome areas and target audience(s) highlighted by the framework. Finally, the presenters reflected on lessons learns and share insights for improving advocacy evaluation at the portfolio level.

Success and Failure in the Evaluation Process
What do the terms “success” and “failure” really mean in the philanthropic world? Funders have taken different approaches to learning from initiatives that haven’t gone quite as they had hoped. Some funders want to learn from their mistakes, some provide technical assistance to lagging grantees, and some want to focus their light on “bright spots” and grantee successes. In this session, Kat Athanasiades from Innovation Network will discuss how and when her organization uses grant reports in evaluation; how and why getting good evaluation data from grant reports is difficult; and potential ways to make it easier for grantees to report on failure in a way that could be useful to evaluators.
Session participants will:
•Know how funders can embed “failure reporting” into grant reports in ways that are useful to evaluators.
•Learn ways a foundation can combat some of the "structural" impediments, e.g., trust and communication, that may prevent proper reporting on failure.
•Gain ideas from fellow participants on how to understand and appreciate grantmaking "failures" as well as successes.

This collection is inspired by Exercises In Style, the classic book by Raymond Queneau. In Exercise In Style, Queneau retells the same very simple story 99 times in 99 different styles.
This deck uses the "Placemat" style, intended to be printed out and used as a resource during an in-person conversation.
Putting Data in Context: Timelining for Evaluators
Creating a timeline is a method for picturing or seeing events as they take place over time. By documenting major occurrences in chronological order, evaluators are able to identify patterns, themes, or trends that they may not have seen otherwise. A timeline allows evaluators to “zoom out” and look at the broader landscape, so that they are better positioned to think through and understand the context in which events occur. Having a timeline is especially useful for complex, multi-year evaluation projects with several threads of evaluation, where documenting the process is just as important as measuring the outcome itself. Creating a timeline has three key components: planning, populating, and revising. This presentation shows how to incorporate a timeline into a report, how to use a timeline to track progress internally, and how to utilize data visualization principles to create a visual timeline.

Assessing the Capacity of Community Coalitions to Advocate for Change
Research has shown that high-capacity coalitions are more successful in effecting community change. While a number of coalition assessment tools have been developed, documentation is scarce regarding how they are implemented, how the results are used, and whether they are predictive of coalition success in collaborative community change efforts. Developed for a health promotion initiative of a major health foundation, this tool is designed to assess coalition progress in eight key areas across twelve different community coalitions, over the course of a three year initiative.
On May 21, 2013, Veena Pankaj, Kat Athanasiades, Ann Emery, and Johanna Morariu gave a presentation titled "Assessing the Capacity of Community Coalitions to Advocate for Change." The panel was hosted by the Advocacy Planning and Evaluation Program (APEP) at the Aspen Institute in Washington, DC.
The session focused on a coalition assessment tool that was designed by Innovation Network to assess changes in coalition capacity over time. Presenters shared lessons learned from the first year of the initiative about developing and deploying the assessment tool, as well as what these tools can--and can't--tell you about a coalition's capacity in conducting community change work. In addition presenters shared how information collected from this assessment can be communicated back to the coalitions using data visualization approaches to effectively communicate the data.

Nonprofits hear a lot of talk about evaluation these days—metrics and measurements, indicators and impact, efficiency and effectiveness. Everyone seems to want evaluation results—from nonprofit staff themselves to donors to board members. But there’s a gap in the conversation: What are nonprofits really doing to evaluate their work? How are they using evaluation results? Do nonprofit staff have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to carry out effective evaluation? We answered these questions—and many others—in State of Evaluation 2012: Nonprofit Evaluation Practice and Capacity. The State of Evaluation project is the first nationwide project that systematically and repeatedly collects data from nonprofits about their evaluation practices. During the brown bag, we’ll discuss the new findings from this research. For example, we found that: 90% of organizations report evaluating their work (up from 85% in 2010); 100% of organizations reported using and communicating their evaluation findings; Budgeting for evaluation is still low—more than 70% of organizations are spending less than 5% of organizational budgets on evaluation; and, on average, evaluation—and its close relation, research—continue to be the lowest priorities for nonprofits (compared to fundraising, financial management, communications, etc.).

The study was conducted to determine the level of Microfinance Banks’ compliance to Stanley
Morgan’s International Benchmarks for Microfinance Institutions, the experience of Standard Microfinance
Bank Limited (SMFB), Yola, Nigeria. The study exclusively used data from secondary sources, consisting of
Standard Microfinance Bank’s financial statements and reports. Morgan Stanley’s methodology (model) for
assessing Microfinance Institutions’ Credit Risks performance rating was used to analyze the secondary data
collected. The study revealed that SMFB performed below expectation in most of the indicators. Based on the
findings of this study, Microfinance Banks (MFBs) are recommended to make Stanley Morgan’s Bench mark
indicators their guide for day to day operations. This will enable MFBs to be sustainable and easily meet up
with the requirements of international investors and donors agencies.

Innovation Network, the evaluation partner for the Kansas Health Foundation's Healthy Communities Initiative, developed and deployed an assessment tool designed to contribute to the assessment of leadership capacity in effecting community change.
In this presentation at the American Evaluation Association's annual conference in Washington, D.C., Kat Athanasaides and Veena Pankaj (Innovation Network) and Deanna Van Hersh (The Kansas Health Foundation) shared lessons learned about developing and deploying a capacity assessment tool. They also discussed what these tools can -- and cannot -- tell you about a coalition's capacity in conducting community change work.
Data Placemats: Construction and Practical Design Tips
Increasing stakeholder involvement throughout the evaluation lifecycle, not only enhances stakeholder buy-in to the final evaluation results, but it also ensures that the evaluator is taking into consideration multiple viewpoints to be able to provide a more comprehensive picture of a program or initiative. Data placemats, a data viz technique to improve stakeholder understanding of data, can be used to communicate preliminary evaluation results during the analysis phase of the evaluation life cycle. When done correctly, it offers stakeholders an opportunity to form their own judgments about the data and weigh in prior to the final report. In this session, the presenter will review the concept of data placemats, focusing specifically on the nuts and bolts of constructing a data placemat.

Understanding the Public Policy Landscape: Lessons From a Retrospective Evalu...
These slides accompanied a presentation at the American Evaluation Association's annual conference in October 2013 in Washington, DC.
Innovation Network evaluators Veena Pankaj and Kat Athanasiades discussed how the Framework for Public Policy Advocacy was used in a retrospective evaluation of a large scale philanthropic public policy campaign. The framework helped to identify and plot grantee strategies across two dimensions - target audience(s) and desired outcomes. Using bubble charts to illustrate the strategic focus of each grantee, the evaluation team was able to recognize trends among the grantee partners, identify gaps and provide an aggregate overview of the types of strategies being supported. Presenters highlighted how the framework was used in selecting and developing appropriate data collection methodologies based on the strategic focus of the grantees. These methodologies were created to specifically correspond to the outcome areas and target audience(s) highlighted by the framework. Finally, the presenters reflected on lessons learns and share insights for improving advocacy evaluation at the portfolio level.

Success and Failure in the Evaluation Process
What do the terms “success” and “failure” really mean in the philanthropic world? Funders have taken different approaches to learning from initiatives that haven’t gone quite as they had hoped. Some funders want to learn from their mistakes, some provide technical assistance to lagging grantees, and some want to focus their light on “bright spots” and grantee successes. In this session, Kat Athanasiades from Innovation Network will discuss how and when her organization uses grant reports in evaluation; how and why getting good evaluation data from grant reports is difficult; and potential ways to make it easier for grantees to report on failure in a way that could be useful to evaluators.
Session participants will:
•Know how funders can embed “failure reporting” into grant reports in ways that are useful to evaluators.
•Learn ways a foundation can combat some of the "structural" impediments, e.g., trust and communication, that may prevent proper reporting on failure.
•Gain ideas from fellow participants on how to understand and appreciate grantmaking "failures" as well as successes.

This PowerPoint deck is part of a collection. PowerPoint can accommodate many different communication styles. Each deck in this collection models a different style. Some models focus on visual display, others strictly on organizing information.
This collection is inspired by Exercises In Style, the classic book by Raymond Queneau. In Exercise In Style, Queneau retells the same very simple story 99 times in 99 different styles.
This deck uses the "Placemat" style, intended to be printed out and used as a resource during an in-person conversation.
Putting Data in Context: Timelining for Evaluators
Creating a timeline is a method for picturing or seeing events as they take place over time. By documenting major occurrences in chronological order, evaluators are able to identify patterns, themes, or trends that they may not have seen otherwise. A timeline allows evaluators to “zoom out” and look at the broader landscape, so that they are better positioned to think through and understand the context in which events occur. Having a timeline is especially useful for complex, multi-year evaluation projects with several threads of evaluation, where documenting the process is just as important as measuring the outcome itself. Creating a timeline has three key components: planning, populating, and revising. This presentation shows how to incorporate a timeline into a report, how to use a timeline to track progress internally, and how to utilize data visualization principles to create a visual timeline.

Facilitators shared strategies for success and addressed potential concerns relevant to both novice and veteran bloggers in an interactive format with opportunities for participants to ask specific questions.

Assessing the Capacity of Community Coalitions to Advocate for Change
Research has shown that high-capacity coalitions are more successful in effecting community change. While a number of coalition assessment tools have been developed, documentation is scarce regarding how they are implemented, how the results are used, and whether they are predictive of coalition success in collaborative community change efforts. Developed for a health promotion initiative of a major health foundation, this tool is designed to assess coalition progress in eight key areas across twelve different community coalitions, over the course of a three year initiative.
On May 21, 2013, Veena Pankaj, Kat Athanasiades, Ann Emery, and Johanna Morariu gave a presentation titled "Assessing the Capacity of Community Coalitions to Advocate for Change." The panel was hosted by the Advocacy Planning and Evaluation Program (APEP) at the Aspen Institute in Washington, DC.
The session focused on a coalition assessment tool that was designed by Innovation Network to assess changes in coalition capacity over time. Presenters shared lessons learned from the first year of the initiative about developing and deploying the assessment tool, as well as what these tools can--and can't--tell you about a coalition's capacity in conducting community change work. In addition presenters shared how information collected from this assessment can be communicated back to the coalitions using data visualization approaches to effectively communicate the data.

Nonprofits hear a lot of talk about evaluation these days—metrics and measurements, indicators and impact, efficiency and effectiveness. Everyone seems to want evaluation results—from nonprofit staff themselves to donors to board members. But there’s a gap in the conversation: What are nonprofits really doing to evaluate their work? How are they using evaluation results? Do nonprofit staff have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to carry out effective evaluation? We answered these questions—and many others—in State of Evaluation 2012: Nonprofit Evaluation Practice and Capacity. The State of Evaluation project is the first nationwide project that systematically and repeatedly collects data from nonprofits about their evaluation practices. During the brown bag, we’ll discuss the new findings from this research. For example, we found that: 90% of organizations report evaluating their work (up from 85% in 2010); 100% of organizations reported using and communicating their evaluation findings; Budgeting for evaluation is still low—more than 70% of organizations are spending less than 5% of organizational budgets on evaluation; and, on average, evaluation—and its close relation, research—continue to be the lowest priorities for nonprofits (compared to fundraising, financial management, communications, etc.).

Morgan’s International Benchmarks for Microfinance Institutions, the experience of Standard Microfinance
Bank Limited (SMFB), Yola, Nigeria. The study exclusively used data from secondary sources, consisting of
Standard Microfinance Bank’s financial statements and reports. Morgan Stanley’s methodology (model) for
assessing Microfinance Institutions’ Credit Risks performance rating was used to analyze the secondary data
collected. The study revealed that SMFB performed below expectation in most of the indicators. Based on the

Refreshing Evaluation in Support of the Social Movements Revival
There is a growing social consciousness in America and a revival of using social movements as a vehicle for social change—with increasing nonprofit involvement and philanthropic funding support. Since the mid-2000’s there have been several notable movements that have taken hold of the public consciousness: the immigration reform movement and DREAMers, The Occupy Movement, Gay Marriage, climate change movement, Black Lives Matter, and a nascent, potential movement developing in protest of the Trump Administration. While evaluating movements has some parallels to established evaluation practice, it also represents some thorny challenges. In a session presented at the American Evaluation Association Conference on November 10, 2017, we explore and share what we are learning about evaluating social movements, including: what we know about social movements, their components, characteristics, and types; what aspects of social movements are ripe for evaluation; and what existing evaluation approaches are well suited to evaluating social movements.

Evaluation Theory Tree: Evaluation Approaches
During the 2015 American Evaluation Association's Annual Conference in Chicago, Katherine Haugh and Deborah Grodzicki conducted a real time data mini-study to see which evaluation approaches evaluators at #eval15 use most frequently in their work. Basing their mini-study off of Marvin C. Alkin's "Evaluation Roots: A Wider Perspective of Theorists’ Views and Influences," they asked evaluators to vote for the top two approaches they used most often. This handout accompanied the real time data mini-study to provide more information about the formation of the evaluation theory tree, it's three branches, and definitions of the evaluation approaches associated with each branch.

Evaluating Adaptive Capacity and Skills + Resources
Since its inception in 2000, the Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH) has invested in policy change in Missouri. Recognizing a dearth of organizations with the capacity to advocate for Missouri health consumers, MFH broadened its grantmaking vision to building a field of consumer health advocates. Using the Framework for Evaluating Advocacy Field Building, Innovation Network and the Center for Evaluation Innovation are currently gauging how MFH shapes this field through its grantmaking. This presentation will focus on evaluating two dimensions of the Framework of this field: Adaptive Capacity and Skills & Resources. A discussion of data collection activities will give the audience ideas about how to evaluate these dimensions, lessons learned from the process, and what has been revealed through the evaluation about Skills & Resources and Adaptive Capacity in a field.

Assessing the Capacity of Community Coalitions to Advocate for Change (Presen...
Research has shown that high-capacity coalitions are more successful in effecting community change. But what does “high capacity” mean? Evaluators have developed tools to provide an answer, but documentation is scarce regarding how they are implemented, how the results are used, and whether they predict coalition success in collaborative community change efforts. This breakfast talk will focus on a coalition assessment tool designed by Innovation Network to assess changes in coalition capacity over time.
Developed for a health promotion initiative of the Kansas Health Foundation, this tool is designed to assess coalition progress in seven key areas across twelve different community coalitions, over the course of a four-year initiative. The Innovation Network team will share lessons learned from the first year of the initiative about developing and deploying the assessment tool, as well as what these tools can—and can’t—tell us about a coalition’s capacity to conduct community change work. They will also present some data visualization techniques for effectively communicating results back to coalitions.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
