The document describes the process the author went through to select the right photograph for the front cover of their magazine. They started with an image that did not have the subject stand out clearly from the background. A second photo was too out of focus. A third photo had the background in clearer focus than the subject. After retaking photos in the same location with adjustments to focus and angles, the author selected a final photo where the subject is clearly in focus and the background complements the underground music theme of the article.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. First Photograph
• Firstly I chose this photograph to use
as the front cover.
• My idea was to make all the
background black place bright
coloured text on top.
• Although the problem with this
image is that the decks were a really
similar colour to the background so
the subject didn’t stand out enough.
• Also most of the front covers that I
analysed had a photograph on the
front where the model was looking
at the camera, I decided I wanted to
use a photo with my subject having
eye contact with the camera, as I
feel it makes it more personal.
3. Second Photograph
• I then chose this photo, and I
wanted to do the same idea,
go around the DJ and make the
background black as the decks
are a slightly different colour in
this photo so the black would
be different.
• I then came across a problem,
although my genre has a
stereotype of being a bit ‘hazy’,
all the front covers I analysed
had the model in focus and
this photo was a bit too out of
focus to use.
4. Third Photograph
• I then went and took another set of photos
that were completely different to my first.
• I went for a simple style, that was focused on
the model and unlike the others the DJ is not
in action. The background was natural and I
didn’t have to change it to black afterwards. I
also thought the background is well fitted to
the article it is based on as the underground
brick wall represents the underground drum
and bass artist.
• Although when I uploaded the photographs
to the computer and saw in more detail the
focus was on the more on the background
than the model.
• I am now going to take the same photos, in
the same location as I like the simple
background but ensure that when I take
them the focus is on the model.
5. Final photograph
• I went back to the same location, the background is
nice and simple and gives a nice underground feel
to the photo, which represents the ‘underground’
artist subject.
• This time I took a wider range of photos with
different light and different focus settings to make
sure that the model was in focus this time.
• I also tried out more angles, this photo has more of
a lower angle which I liked because I found when I
was analysing the front cover photos on existing
magazines many of the photos were from a lower
angle and it gives the effect that the artist is
dominating.
• This photo gives me nice space to add my mast
head and cover lines around the model without
having to cut any of him off or go over him, I am
happy with this and I think it has nice simplicity
with the layout and colours, allowing me to create
what I want from it.
