resistance with Ottawa especially over the relative share of taxes taken by the federal and provincial
government. During Diefenbaker and then Pearson administration, the federal government made
considerable concessions to the provinces mainly to conciliate Quebec. The provinces received
sixteen percent of the income, corporation, and succession taxes gather by the federal government
in late fifties. More importantly, the Pearson g yielded to the constant demand of Lesage and
Levesque for the right of provinces to opt out of shared cost program in which the federal
government paid a percentage of the costs incurred by a province that agreed to establish a
particular program in line with principles laid out by the federal government .
Although Quebec government won a substantial autonomy as result of its negotiation with Ottawa,
nationalists saw the cooperation with the federal government is humiliating for Quebec to go to

Foreshadowing In The Chocolate War
The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier is a book that provides a sneak peek behind the scenes at
the harmony before the havoc. The book provides a look at how one person fights through the
battle of finding oneself, trying to fix a mistake they made, and how it affects those around
them. The Chocolate War begins with the line They murdered him. An opening that, at first lead to
confusion, then became an enormous point of foreshadowing in the story. The author begins by
creating a sensory image of our characters playing football, getting injured, and leading the reader
to believe that this is what the story would be about. The book really is leading the reader into a
complex cast of characters ranging from a money hungry headmaster to a student... Show more

The Vigils run things by keeping the freshman portion of the student body living in fear and
assigning difficult tasks that could potentially get those students in trouble. The Vigils consist
of Archie Costello the groups assigner and for some odd reason it seems as though everyone at
Trinity obeys Archie s word like it s law. Then sits Carter, Trinity s star football player, the group
s president and Archie s right hand man. At the bottom of the Vigils food chain is Obie the
errand boy, a student who does every possible thing to stay in the Vigils good graces such as
handing out Archie s assignments. At this point it seems as though the teachers have no chance at
getting their school back, until the persistent headmaster Brother Leon steps in to ask Archie and
the Vigils for help selling the excessively ordered 20,000 boxes of chocolate at $2 a box. That s
when The Chocolate War begins. Any time Archie hands out an assignment he has to draw from a
black box with marbles in it, a box he s never lost against. If Archie draws a black marble he has to
carry out the assignment, if he draws a white marble the assignment stands. Jerry Renault just so

Skills Deduction Essay
THEORY OF SKILL ACQUISITION
BY HUBERT AND STUART DREYFUS
Sam Sedaei
One of the major aspects of traditional epistemology, and its manifestation in artificial intelligence
research and the philosophy of mind is its emphasis on the formal system of deduction and
premises and propositional knowledge. Hubert and Stuart Dreyfus argue that this formal system of
deduction is one of the problems with traditional epistemology, since much of our sense of
judgment and the process which we go through to form beliefs is not a matter of starting with
premises and by plugging them into a formula in order to deduct conclusions. But rather it is a
gradual process that involves being embodied in different ways and developing skills that would
make it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the third stage, competence, the agent starts becoming personally involved with the task.
He starts to see more than one option from which he has to choose the best one. For instance, at
some point he realizes that he can either take away the opponent s knight, or he can give up his own
knight but take the opponent s queen. In the forth stage or proficiency stage, the performer, while
intuitively understanding his task, still thinks analytically about his actions. For instance, despite
having so much experience in chess, he might still have to think and consider alternative moves in
critical situations by predicting what the opponent is going to play next. The last stage is called
expertise. Experts in general know what to do based on mature understanding of the task. An expert
has had so much experience with the task that the skill of doing the task is a part of him.
He acts upon correct intuitions without analytically thinking about his every move. For instance in
chess, he has had so much experience playing that no matter what the arrangement of the chess
pieces are, it is highly likely that he has been in the same situation before and is able to decide
what the right move is in a real short amount of time. They also emphasize on the fact that practice
is required for the agent to maintain the

George Orwell s Use Of Pathos In Politics And The English...
George Orwell uses pathos in Politics and the English Language. He does this to evoke emotion
from the reader. The author s manner of using pathos is well done. Throughout his paper, the author
uses pathos in examples and specific wording. Throughout the paper s entirety, the paper elicits
feelings of inferiority and stupidity. Whether the author intended this or not is unclear. Yet, it is
clear that the manner in which the author speaks uses pathos a lot. At the start of the paper, there
are many usages of pathos. For instance, the author writes about how a man feels like a failure.
This phrase is an instance of pathos. The phrase provides an example of a feeling. Furthermore, the
author writes that English can be an ugly language. Pathos

Nt1330 Unit 3 Assignment 4 Command Line
CM 523 Homework 4: Command Line Bochao Sun Nov. 14, 2017 When I encountered
command line during last week s class, I found it a little confusing and aloof . I was totally
unfamiliar with its purpose and syntax, and the interface is merely characters of same font and
size. I thought it is something only for computer science students and does not have anything to
do with web design and interaction. Things changed a lot as I learn to use it. In fact, such flat
interface excludes all graphical display formats in regular commands thus makes it clearer to find
the target directory and file by looking their names and types (e.g. style.css) returned after the ls
command. It should occupy less RAM of the computer than Finder because it does not render figure

When I am using graphical user interface, I can go back and forth to the last directory by simply
clicking at arrow on the Finder window. However, I need to type commands every time to

and takes time. It also takes time to learn and get used to the set of commands that make sense in
CLI. What s more, contents are permanently deleted after the rm or rm r command, which may
cause loss of important documents by mistake. Another detail that I pay attention to is that in
Finder, I can preview most files by pressing the Space button and switch the files with arrow
buttons on keyboard, while previewing is not available on CLI. I need to open it with an open
command. In addition, CLI once surprised me by making reasonable suggestions. The first time I

Baptism Is A Sacred Rite
1.A. What is baptism?
Baptism is a sacred rite that admits a candidate into the Christian community. Baptism is used by
most Christian variants to signify the person s initiation into the beliefs and practices of the
Christian community. Baptism is a purifying ritual generally involving water, and welcomes one
into the Christian community. Most Christian variants recognise baptism as necessary for
redemption of the soul. Baptism is a ceremonial act undertaken after a person accepts Jesus Christ
as his or her Lord and saviour. This is usually done in the presence of the church body as a public
proclamation of one s faith.
B. What is the history behind Baptism?
Jews practised the act of baptism as a traditional act of purification and the initiation of changes to
Judaism long before the coming of the Messiah. The origins of baptism might be found in the
book of Leviticus where the Levite priests were commanded to perform a symbolic cleansing in
water before and after performing their priestly duties. Leviticus 16:4 tells us, He is to put on the
sacred linen tunic, with linen undergarments next to his body; he is to tie the linen sash around him
and put on the linen turban. These are sacred garments; so he must bathe himself with water before
he puts them on. Peter pointed out that the water of the flood symbolizes bapВtism that now saves
you (1 Pet. 3:21).
However the Christians were first introduced to Baptism through John the Baptist, a relative of
Christ, in the New

Impact Of Globalization On The Economy
Globalisation and the economy are two interchangeable ideas with one another. Globalisation is not
a single concept since it encompasses multiple components such as economic integration; the
transfer of policies across borders; the transmission of knowledge and cultural stability it is a
global process (Al Rodhan Stoudmann, 2006). The best representation of globalisation is the
process in which businesses create international influence where they can then begin to operate on
a global scale (Al Rodhan Stoudmann, 2006). A country that succeeds in globalisation is one that
will become an economic force in the world. Third world countries like Cubahave some of the
worst economies in the world because of poor globalisation that is a result... Show more content on

In the case of Cuba and the United States globalisation refers to the increased economic integration
between these two countries. Nonetheless, with little doubt among economists it can be shown
that used effectively globalisation has produced significant gains at the global level. However,
there is a threat that globalisation can intensify the gap between rich and poor between a country
and across nations. Globalisations linked to politics as it is a part of a government process since
the government can shape or limit the possibilities for private entrepreneurship (Dreher, Gaston
Martens, 2010). Politics is also influenced by the globalisation of a country because of the
international relations between countries. Third world countries are seen as obsolete and
constricted because they are considered ineffective by having too many transnational connections
and not having the ability to grow and gain international connections (Haynes). Third world
countries like Cuba who are seen as economically weak will have a harder time being incorporated
into the global world and therefore politically, the country will not excel as much as it could.
A country is affected economically by globalisation as the flow of goods and services and factors
of production have both direct and indirect effects on a nation state (Dreher, Gaston Martens, 2010).
Globalisation has the ability to be very

Essay On The Colony Of Virginia
The colony of Virginia was founded by a stock company: the Virginia Company. To attract people
Virginia made a wonderful charter. Emigrants who paid their own way to Virginia got fifty acres of
land. There would not be mere tenants. Civil authority would control the military. A council of
burgesses, representatives chosen by the inhabitants of the colony for their government, would be
convened as the House of Burgesses. The governor could veto their actions and the company still
had overall control of the venture, but the settlers would have a say in their own government,
including the right of the House of Burgesses to introduce money bills. The King s court appointed
a royal governor, someone who had never set foot on the land of... Show more content on

The governor chose six people in the colony to be in his council. The other fifteen people were
chosen by the king because of their family and wealth. In all, there were twenty two members that
attended. All the representatives were English. Each of the Virginian counties had sent a
representative to the house. The first meeting was on July 30, 1619. It was held in the choir of the
church on Jamestown Island. It lasted for six days, but was cut short by the disease, Malaria.
Problems began to strike, like a massacre from the Native Americans where they killed 400
colonists. As hard as the government tried to conceal the problems, the king heard about them. He
made virginia a crown colony. The king divided the colony into eight shires. By 1643, there were
15 shires! Most jobs were simply commanded to people. Only the representatives got votes to
represent. Each shire would send a vote for a representative to go and work in the House, rather
than have it be just rich people. White men that were seventeen years old or older and owned land
were able to vote for these representatives. In 1652, Oliver Cromwell forced Jamestown to admit
that they had been taken over. However, that did not mean that their

Unity And Diversity In America Today
Today in America, we live in a country that honors freedom, and diversity. Over the past century,
there have been many conflicts throughout the world due to nations differing views about
important issues such as freedom, economics, and a need for power. As a new nation, the United
States had to figure out where it stood and how it fit into the larger scheme of the world. As older
countries who were closer to each other geographically fought over borders and religion and
conflicting ideologies, America had an opportunity to align itself with established nations whose
way of life matched closest to what we wanted to be. The modern world we live in today, has been

Creation Myths In Hesiod, Ovid, And Apollodorus
Ancient authors such as Hesiod, Ovid, and Apollodorus set forth to record what they knew of their
gods, especially how these gods created the world and the beings inside of it. Each author provides
different variations of the myths that surround creationism. Modern westerners are familiar with the
creation stories provided within Genesis, not realizing that many elements were borrowed and
inspired by other cultures, such as the Greeks. These myths, even within the same book, can
contradicting or confusing. Between authors, there are often different interpretations, that during
the time they were written, co existed and were accepted as truth, regardless of how impossible it
was for both to be correct. For these ancient cultures, it is clear that each one believed in... Show

The story of a flood is popular within many creation myths, the most famous of today told within
Genesis. Ovid declares that Zeus was mad at humanity and commanded Poseidon to flood the earth
(1.262 313). For unknown reasons, Deucalion and Pyrrha have a boat and survive the flood. They
begin to worship the gods, when Themis whispers to them to throw the bones if their mother. They
take this to mean to throw rocks, as Gaia is Mother Earth. They obey, and these rocks turn into
humans and they begin to repopulate the earth (1.314 449). In Apollodorus account of the flood,
Prometheus, the father of Deucalion, warns his son of the flood and tells him to build an ark. After
the water subsides, Deucalion and Pyrrha worship Zeus and he sends Hermes to instruct the couple
on repopulating the earth. Once again, Deucalion and Pyrrha throw rocks, with this time, Deucalion
s rocks turning into men and Pyrrha s turning into women (Apollod. Bibl. 1.46 48). Despite two
people of opposite genders surviving, both accounts relay that humans were created again through
supernatural means, rather than natural

market to improve the communication and the brand identity of an organisation (Keller, 2014).
In the case of the tourism industry, social media like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter help firms
to expand their brand reach by building a relationship with customers through an open
conversation process (Ammerman, 2015). A social media campaign helps the tourism industry to
achieve more customer satisfaction and loyalty. Considering the words of Ramaseshan and Stein
(2014), it is essential for a social media campaign to select a suitable social media platform for
engaging the customers with the right choice of messages. Therefore, a tactical plan for a social
media campaign is going to be developed for Shropshire Hills Tourism, UK. The tactical plan
attempts to create potential leads by developing a photography competition campaign on Facebook.

Bartleby, the Scrivener by Herman Melville
Bartleby, the Scrivener is an interesting short story written by Herman Melville for Putnam s
magazine at a time when Melville was in need for money (Davis 183). The narrator opens with a
description of himself, his employees, and the fact that his business has recently grown. Soon
after, the narrator, who is a lawyer, hires an additional employee by the name of Bartleby, the
namesake of the story. He then proceeds to tell the reader all he knows of Bartleby: how he
started off copying as desired; how he then preferred not to do the tasks that were asked of him;
how he was eventually fired but refused to leave, even when the lawyer moved his practice; how
he was put into prison; and how he died of starvation while incarcerated. The... Show more content

Secondly, we know the narrator to be the protagonist due to the fact that he is the one that
experiences conflict in the story. According to Todd Davis, the lawyer is a man who has been led
toward a realization of his shortcomings by his encounter with Bartleby (184). Furthermore, this
realization has to do with the narrator s struggle between horological comfort and chronometrical
ideals, or, in other words, his struggle between secular and divine principles (Davis 185). Since the
protagonist of a story is, by definition, the main character that goes through a conflict, we can
thereby deduce that the lawyer is the protagonist of Bartleby, the Scrivener. To go further, the
implication that the lawyer is the protagonist also suggests that Bartleby is the antagonist, and this
truly is the case. Notably, we cannot possibly know the real true Bartleby as he would describe
himself because we only know of the lawyer s interpretation of him (Davis 184). This means that
although Bartleby is the main focus of the narrative, he cannot be the main character. Additionally,
Bartleby is the cause for the narrator s strife, and this reinforces his antagonistic role even though
he is not a bad guy like some antagonists. In fact, Bartleby is more on the good side. The reader,
like the narrator, feels compassion and sympathy for this poor soul, but, again, this is the cause for

Summary Of Richard Adams Watership Down
1.Watership Down takes place in Sandleford Warren, Enbrone Crossing, Newton Common, and
Cowslips Warren, Frith Copse. In the front of the book it has a map which shows where the
rabbits have lived and traveled. The rabbits first lived at the Sandleford Warren; however one of
the rabbits, Fiver, had a vision that danger was coming. A group of rabbits went with Fiver and
his brother, Hazel. The first headed toward Enbrone Crossing. It was in fact the little river

Food Safety Legislation Key Facts
According to the Center for Disease Control Prevention (CDC), there are around 48 million
people who get sick annually due to foodborne diseases. One out of six people in the USA get
sick or suffer from foodborne illness annually. More than hundred thousand people are hospitalized
and thousands of dying every year ( Food SafetyModernization Act (FSMA) Food Safety
Legislation Key Facts 2015). Therefore, the new FSMA rules are important to ensure safe U.S.
food supply system. In December 21st, 2010 the new food safety law passed by the congress. This
is the turning point of U.S. history concerning national food safety. The Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) has the legislative mandate to carry out comprehensive, prevention based

Some of these are carbonated beverages; some are non carbonated fruit juices. Good agricultural
practices (GAP) will ensure the safe fruit production. Under FSMA, processing of juice should be
complying with Hazard Analysis and Risk Based Preventive Controls (HARPC) in order to
minimize the potential contamination risk. Some fruit juices use in beverages to produce in the
USA some are imported from other countries. FSMA mandates the establishment of the foreign
supply verification program to ensure that imported fruit juices are safe and made to the same
safety and labeling standards as those made in the USA.
Fruit juices are serving as favorite nutrient supplements among children and adults. The fruit juices
are rich in nutrients and consumption is encouraged as part of a healthy lifestyle. Children are the
largest consumer group for fruit juices (Wu et al. 2015). Potential contamination of pesticide
residues and microbiological risks are needed to be considered in this vulnerable population. US
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established tolerance limit for each pesticide considering
potential human risk. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) enforces pesticide tolerances
for food except for meat, poultry, and some egg products.

Student Code Violation
I would like to start this appeal by stating that I do not deny that my guest damaged University
property. However, it is the amount of damage and the severity of monetary compensation
demanded of me that I take issue with. The fact of the matter is that I am being assessed a fine of
several thousand dollars based on video evidence that my guest damaged two ceiling tiles. Although
I find any damageto what I consider my home to be a personal affront and a despicable act, I
strongly feel that in this situation the punishment is exceedingly disproportionate to the crime. I
have developed a strong allegiance to Quinnipiac University and I can honestly say that I was
appalled by the vandalism which occurred on that night.

There is absolutely no evidence that Ryan caused the extensive damage seen in the 180s and 280s.
Even Mr. Blakeman, who conducted the investigation, did not appear to be under the impression
that Ryan caused these extensive damages. The only evidence of vandalism shows Ryan and two
other individuals walking down a hallway on the other side of Commons and striking two tiles. The
damage that they caused is, unfortunately, a normal amount of damage for Commons on a
weekend night. Students frequently vandalize this dorm, and that is disgraceful, however one
small, isolated incident is not indicative of responsibility for a second incident with much greater
damages. The damages have not stopped since Ryan and the other individual shown in the video
have left campus. I believe that it is clear that a portion of residents in Commons simply continue
damaging Commons.
As a result of this case, I have been placed on deferred suspension for nearly an entire year.
However, the charge is based off of pure speculation and assumptions. A professional investigation
should not be based off of simple assumptions, especially considering the gravity of the sanctions in

Drive In Movie Theater History
History of Drive In Movie Theater Drive in movie theaters were extremely popular during the
1930 through the early 2000 s. Creators, facts, and closed are main points in the history of drive
in movie theaters. Richard Hollingshead made history June 6, 1933, when he opened the first
drive in movie theater in Camden, New Jersey (Cohen). Richard was a sales manager at his dad s
store, Whiz Auto Products (Cohen). The idea for a drive in movie theatercame to him because his
mother would be very uncomfortable when she would sit in theater seats. He experimented in
his own driveway (Cohen), by nailing a screen to a tree, putting a 1928 Kodak projector on the
hood of a car, and using a radio to produce sound ( Drive In Movie History ). He also... Show more

The Pros And Cons Of The Canadian Conscription Crisis
The United States of America is the nation with the largest, most powerful, and most funded
military. The United States has been known to commonly get involved with other nations purely
based off the fact that it is militarily capable. In the past the United States has had to implement
several drafts to support the military s need for more troops. The question is, in this day and age,
would it be acceptable for the United Statesto order a national mandatory military conscriptionto
fuel the military? There are always those that are exempt from military service, as well as those
who cannot be exempt which increases the gap of inequality which will harm some more than

economy depends on the workers and cannot possibly be maintained if many of said workers are

present there is no need for a military conscription to occur. Overall a mandatory military

Comparing Millet And Homer s Paintings
Both artworks Man with a Hoe 1860 1862, and The cotton pickers 1876 have subjects in the
people and occupations of everyday world. Millet and Homer s most of the works are related with
agriculture and life of poor and middle class people. The reason I choose these artworks because
they are related with occupations of everyday life. Also they are related with realism. Bad time
comes on everybody, and both artists have been involved in the controversy about their art works.
Jean François Milletwas accused of being a political trouble maker artist. His painting like Man
with a Hoe caused a controversy in the 1860s. The standing man s expressions in the picture were
translated as a communist protest. There was some negative reviews on some of the images in

There are some parts in the artworks that are related with each other. For example, there are bright
and hue colours in the artworks, and the artists used primary colours in them. There are no uses of
shadows in the cotton picker s artwork. The use of plants in the paintings makes them relates with
nature and free form style art. Millet man with a hoe was made with a pen and brushes. The
texture of these pieces is rough because the artists used hue colours. The use of colours in the
artworks affects the quality of the art because if Homer only used the dark black colour in the
cotton pickers, then viewer cannot recognize the cotton plant in the painting. Both are medium
style paintings made with oil on canvas. The culture is different in the paintings. The cotton picker
is related with American culture and the man with a hoe is related with French culture. The main
reason they are connected with each other because it shows the hard working images of peoples
inside them. It does not matter what culture they are belong to. They are made in late 1800s during
war time, and that is the reason they got involved in

In The Middle Of The 19Th Century, Congo Square Became
In the middle of the 19th century, Congo Square became a center of musical expression. On these
Sunday afternoons, a new form of music was born. Pioneered by those on the bottom of a society
full of slavery and segregation, the origin of jazz was less a singular event than an evolving
movement. None of those pioneers, however, could have anticipated the future of their developing
art form. None could have foreseen that their informal rhythmic gatherings would eventually lead to
nationally recognized big bands with more than 20 musicians and celebrity band leaders. The
trajectory of jazzhistory is complex and rich, flowing from style to style and from region to

Largely a remnant of military bands from the civil war, these provincial brass bands maintained
a public presence with parades, parties, celebrations, and funerals. Fusing traditional marches
with the developing ragtime styles and the cultural celebratory music of Congo Square, these
bands started infusing their music with blues notes, syncopated rhythms, and jazz like phrasing
to get their audiences dancing. The instrumentation of these brass bands emphasized brass
instruments, polyphonic musical style with a carrying tone, sectional playing within the band;
many of these characteristics translated into early jazz forms. Though the label suggests a band
comprising solely brass musicians, early Louisiana bands also included clarinet and saxophone.
In the smaller bands used for indoor performances, a smaller string band was used, composed of
cornet, violin, guitar, bass, and piano. These existing ensembles influenced the early jazz bands
in New Orleans. Buddy Bolden s band is widely considered the first true jazz band in New
Orleans; according to a rare photograph from 1905, featured a pair of clarinets, cornet, valve
trombone, guitar, and bass. Though the earliest bands were never recorded, jazz historians such as
William Schafer have speculated about the influence of the brass band roots on the development of
jazz style: black New Orleans brass band nurtured a characteristic outdoor playing style with lots of

To What Extent Should Teenagers Get Their License Essay
Because of safety concerns, many states have increased the age at which teenagers can begin to

As well, it is quite convenient to have a car so you can do errands for your guardian while they

Stand and Deliver: Movie about an Educational Setting
In order to complete this assignment, I decided to focus on the educational setting of the film
Stand and Deliver . Stand and Deliver took place in the year 1987 and was focused on
demonstrating the life challenges that students faced in the city of East Los Angeles California.
This movie is based on the true story of a mathematics teacher who motivated high school students
at Garfield High School to learn about calculus. Additionally, this filmwill identify the context,
norms, values, language, gender roles and the social structures of the movie.
In this film, Garfield high school is located in a poor neighborhood in East Los Angeles. The
movie portrayed this neighborhood as a location that was surrounded by violence, fights, and
crimes. Every night it was very common for the residents living in this neighborhood to witness
fights among gang members, and hear shootings and ambulance sirens. The majority of people who

The Justification Of The Nsa Unlawful Spying Activities
The justifications provided for the leakage of the NSA unlawful spying activities also support the
argument that Snowman s act was permissible. For instance, Snowden justifies his act by stating
that he relied on the U.S Constitution, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the
1945 Nuremberg declaration. He provides his explanation for his shift from the his earlier held
philosophy of nationalism by noting that people have an international duty that surpasses their
national obligations of loyalty, (Scheuerman, 2014). He further expounds that sometimes national
loyalty leads to national relativism whereby people overlook their country s evils, instead
preferring to focus on distant and external evils.
Generally, intelligence systems are extensively concealed, which exposes them to potential abuse
by those in charge. This results in abuse of human rights such as privacy rights that is detrimental to
the very security that such systems ought to safeguard. As such, blowing the whistle on such
activities can be an effective mechanism of exposing the ills that characterize intelligence systems.
Furthermore, Scheurman (2014) argues that a requirement for whistleblower identity disclosure as
proposed in Sagar s framework enhances their opportunity to fulfill their obligations to justify their
actions. They further state that whistleblower identity disclosure demonstrates civic mindedness. In
addition, the disclosure of the whistle blower s identity helps to prevent

Body Language Of A Silent Film
Language developed tremendously through the use of silent films in the 1800s and early
1900s. A silent film is that which consists of only the picture, and no sound. This was an era of
truly transformative filmmaking, forcing writers and producers to have to step out of a
comfort zone in order to allow purely visual expressions to touch their audiences and convey
their stories. This was achieved through a greater emphasis on facial expressions and body
language. Firstly, one of the greatest movies in the silent era was that by Keaton, Sherlock Jr.
This film encompasses all the core principles of telling a story through silence and overcoming
the cinematic boundaries of its day. The key to achieving this is through the direct
expressiveness of the body language of the actors alongside the plot and how Keaton
specifically selected the scenes. The film begins with a love story between a wealthy girl
(Kathryn McGuire) and a projectionist at a local movie theatre. His dream to become a detective
is what drives the film. A memorable scene in the movie is that in the candy shop when Keaton
goes to buy the chocolates for the girl. This was performed entirely in pantomime, allowing the
audience to get in touch with the film, and comprehend his desperation to woo the girl. He
shadows Crane, who is larger in size than he is, mimicking his body language and gestures. This
was done using a tracking shot. Keaton s framing techniques were clear enough to tell the story,
particularly when

Prejudice And Racism Exposed In The Bible
Generalities and blanket statements can be refuted because of the all or nothing aspect, and this
certainly is the case with the statement that everyone is a little bit racist. Racism does exist; that is
without question. However, I am not willing to say that every human has racist tendencies within
his/her heart.
In the beginning of time, God created man in his image (Genesis 1:29, New King James Version).
In both the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 10:17, New King James Version) and the New
Testament (Romans 2:11, New King James Version), we read that God does not show respect or
partiality to any person. Therefore, if man is created in God s image, and God does not show
partiality to any person, then the possibility exists that not everyone is a little bit racist. To say
otherwise is equivalent to saying that God is racist.

One reason for this belief is found in Proverbs 28:21. The Bible teaches that showing respect of
persons is not good (New King James Version). This demonstrates that showing partiality, or
superiority as some view racism, came into play because teaching against the behavior is found
here and other places in the Bible. Another reason for the belief can be seen within my school s
walls. Lunch tables filled with various nationalities and kids getting along with other kids
regardless of skin color are common. This type of behavior often stops as the kids age and are
influenced by some source. As a middle school teacher in a K 8 school, I have witnessed shifts in
some students behaviors, and racist tendencies appear out of the blue. Because of the Bible s

How To Solve The Objective Problem
Since there are only two variables , we can solve this problem using the Graphical Method by
graphing the set of points in the plane that satisfies the constraint set and then finding which point
of this set maximizes the value of the objective function . Each inequality constraint is satisfied by
a half plane of points, and the constraint set is the intersection of all the half planes. In the present

What dear brothers, is more delightful than the voice of the Lord calling to us? ~ Saint

Since he was a youth, Benedict tried to spread the catholic faith. St. Benedict is a great example
of patience and perseverance. Even after multiple failed attempts, Benedict continued his pursuit
in spreading God s love. God thanked him by saving his life on two separate occasions. The first
time, a group of monks tried to kill him because they believed his method of teaching was too
strict. They poisoned the chalice of wine, but when Benedict blessed the cup, it shattered. In the
second attempt of murder the monks poisoned his bread. However, before he could eat it a raven

In one incident, satan tested his chastity with the image of a beautiful woman. To prevent himself
from sin, Benedict dived into a bush of thorns. It is said that the wound on his body healed the

Alternative Theories to Profit Maximization
Alternative theories to profit maximization ranging from perfect competition to strict monopolies.
Companies and The Market
Most companies are profit oriented. Companies survive and live on profit. Even governmental
institutions, NGO s and NPO s are profit oriented, what they do with profit is different though.
Saying this means that companies seek always to be at a position where profit is maximized. As
we know by now this happens when MC=MR but this is an always changing point as supply and
demand are dynamic, effectively meaning that if firms get it right once they can t just do the same
eternally, they still need to adapt to every market factor as a new change is a new reality all
together that needs to be studied and addressed. All ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One step away from perfect competition is monopolistic competition. This type of market structure
has a number of different characteristics from the above. Which turn it into one of the most used
market structures. In this scenario, companies are not all price takers and start making use of
economies of scale in order to improve efficiency, reduce costs and increase profits. In the scenario
companies sell a differentiated product at different prices. Like in perfect competition no barriers
are put to entry and newcomers a constant threat to the market keeping every player always in
search for a better mean to produce and compete.
An oligopoly, is when there are only a few number of companies that control a specific market. The
barriers to entry can be both legal/political (ie. number of licenses awarded to cell phone operators)
to the fact that the companies themselves create a cartel like attitude effectively brushing of the
market new entrants through aggressive measures like undercutting pricing on new smaller
entrants, controlling inputs for production, etc.
On the other end of the market structures are monopolies. Monopolies are generally quite

The Greek And Greek Influence Of The Roman Empire
Another empire would soon take many influences from the Greeks. In Rome, an empire was
beginning to rise. Roman civilization had its roots in Hellenistic culture because they idolized them.
They borrowed and enhanced upon the Greek intellectual accomplishments. As the empire
expanded this would become increasingly important. As the Romans continued to expand their
empire and influence, they were also spreading the culture of those who influenced them the Greeks
. The Roman Empireat their peak had a vast control over much of the Mediterranean and into
Europe controlling much of Britain, Spain, France, the North African coast, much of Asia minor.
Within these regions they had vast numbers provinces where they would allow rule the local... Show

These effects reached from China, India, the Middle East, and some portions of Africa. As different
regions adopted new aspects of life, they further implement that into their culture. Then the as the
culture grows, it grows with the influences adopted form that of the Romans who borrowed it form
the Greeks. Similarly, with the Romans and Macedonians their conquest and implementation of
their culture was the main source of the spread of Hellenistic culture. However the combination of
controlling more regions and being more involved with global trade, the Romans were able to
further expand Greek influence than those before them. Soon the Roman Empire began to decline
and an even more impactful implementation of Greek culture began to arise in a region to the east.
As the Roman Empire fell and small Kingdoms began to arise throughout Europe, in a different
region of the world, an intellectual revolution began and flourished. During a period between the
eighth and ninth centuries, the Islamic world of the Middle East Experienced its Golden Age .
This was a period of advancements in the sciences, astronomy, mathematics, and medicine. The
main source contributed to these advancements is from the Greeks. However this Golden Age may
have been delayed for many years if not for a man named Mamun. Mamun was a Caliph who would

The For Your Child s Winter Essay
You can t miss the nip in the air, and as the year draws to an end, the mercury is going to dip
even further. This also means it s time to pull out all those colourful woollies that have been
languishing in the cupboard, and maybe buy some new ones to stay in sync with the season s
trends. Gone are the days when the over sized woolens came in monotonous and boring winter
shades. Now, you can splurge on colours and watch your child radiate the brightness. Red is big
for girls and boys, and the metallics that lit up the runways in the fall are also gracing kids winter
lines.
When choosing woolens for your child, practicality is of utmost importance. But don t overlook
the fashion angle. Kids, these days, are extremely conscious about what they wear. Here are a few
winter must haves for your child.
1. Just jackets
Your child s winter wardrobe would be incomplete without a warm and colourful jacket. Depending
on where you are stationed, you can opt for a quilt lined jacket, a football jacket, a classic denim
one or the contemporary ones that look more like coats. Cotton, Light and medium poly fill
jackets are in fashion these days, with sweat jackets ruling the fashion scene. Jackets, not only
provide ample warmth, but when zipped right up, take care of the entire upper torso without you
having to worry much. Little girls can add a few frills and flowers to their jackets without thinking
twice. And if it s not too cold, they can even go for chic shrugs.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets Analysis
In Mr. Penumbra s 24 Hour Bookstore, Robin Sloan uses the main character of Clay Jannon and
the supporting characters of Kat Potente and Neel Shah to prove the importance of having
accomplices when a protagonist tries to uncover a mystery. This theme is also prominent in J.K.
Rowling s book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where the protagonist, Harry Potter, is
supported by his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. Both Sloan and Rowling argue
that the allies of the hero are just as significant as the hero himself by creating characters that
resemble one another to an extreme extent. First, the similarities between the two main
characters, Clay Jannon and Harry Potter, is most visible when comparing the two quests that
the boys have to face. Though their age difference is quite immense, their personalities are
reflective in the sense that they are of low self esteem at the beginning of the story. Clay Jannon
is unemployed and feeling lost when he wanders into Mr. Penumbra s 24 Hour Bookstore,
thinking, ...this is exactly the kind of store that makes you want to buy a book about a teenage
wizard. This is the kind of store that makes you want to be a teenage wizard (p.12). Speaking of
teenage wizards, 13 year old Harry Potter comes to HogwartsSchool of Witchcraft and Wizardry
with his peers under the impression that he is some kind of god, being the boy who lived .
Though he seems popular from the start, he is doubting how he could be so great when he does
not know anything about being a wizard. Each boy is called to a quest and gathers a team of
their closest companions to join them. In Mr. Penumbra s 24 Hour Bookstore, Clay makes his
group out of his closest friends to help him decode Aldus Manutius codex vitae, explaining, I have
a rogue (that s me) and a wizard (that s Kat) (p. 117). He then recruits his warrior, Neel Shah, and
his mentor, Mr. Penumbra. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry s team consists of his
best friends, Ron and Hermione, with the help of his teacher, Dumbledore. Throughout their
journeys, the two protagonists experience self discovery and heightened self esteem. Eventually,
the main character must face the ultimate challenge alone, having gained enough

Risk and Return
Return, Risk and The Security Market Line An Introduction to Risk and Return
Whether it is investing, driving or just walking down the street, everyone exposes themselves to
risk. Your personality and lifestyle play a big role in how much risk you are comfortably able to
take on. If you invest in stocks and have trouble sleeping at night, you are probably taking on too
much risk. (For more insight, see A Guide to Portfolio Construction.) Risk is defined as the chance
that an investment s actual return will be different than expected. This includes the possibility of
losing some or all of the original investment.
Those of us who work hard for every penny we earn have a hard time parting with money.
Therefore, people with less ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The variance of a portfolio s return is a function of the variance of the component assets as well as
the covariance between each of them. Covariance is a measure of the degree to which returns on
two risky assets move in tandem. A positive covariance means that asset returns move together. A
negative covariance means returns move inversely. Covariance is closely related to correlation,
wherein the difference between the two is that the latter factors in the standard deviation.
Modern portfolio theory says that portfolio variance can be reduced by choosing asset classes with
a low or negative covariance, such as stocks and bonds. This type of diversification is used to
reduce risk.
Portfolio variance looks at the covariance or correlation coefficient for the securities in the
portfolio. Portfolio

The Central Auditory System
The receptive organ for audition is the organ of Corti, located on the basilar membrane (Carlson
Birkett, 2017). The inner hair cells form synapses with the dendrites of the bipolar neurons whose
axons give rise to the cochlear branch of the eighth cranial nerve. The central auditory system
involves several brain stem nuclei, including the cochlear nuclei, superior olivary complexes, and
inferior colliculi. The medial geniculate nucleus relays auditory information to the primary auditory
cortex on the medial surface of the temporal lobe. The primary auditory cortex contains three
separate tonotopic representations of auditory information and is surrounded by two levels of
auditory association cortex: the belt region, which contains seven

Van Gogh s Starry Night
In Vincent Van Gogh s Starry Night there are many aspects of the artwork that are symbolic of
Van Gogh s life struggles. It is easy for the viewer to assume that the aspects of Starry Night
represent van Gogh s time in the asylum, however, not all aspects represent his insanity and
isolation. Starry Night is van Gogh s representation of his biography inspired by his loss of faith,
which can be seen and supported by the symbols of the church and the stars. It is fair to say van
Gogh was not in a good emotional place when he painted Starry Night. On May 8th 1889, van
Gogh entered the hospital of St. Paul de Mausole at St. RГ©my because of his mental instability.
He did not leave for many weeks therefore he was able to devote the majority of his time to his
paintings. van Gogh painted Starry Night in June between 16 18. The mountains are the ones he
could see from his cell window but are exaggerated to reflect this idea of another world or
religion that he had connected with in the past (Soth). According to James Elkins, van Gogh had
very passionate, if not obscure, thoughts about how his art worked as religion (Elkins 12). Many
scholars can see the relationship but it is not evident to the common eye. There is definitely a
relationship that ties Starry Night to van Gogh s spiritual life, but it is the loss of his spiritual life
that influenced this piece of artwork. In Starry Night (figure 1) there is a church that is not based
off the church in the town of St. RГ©my

The Importance Of Looking Before You Leap Essay
The Importance of Looking Before You Leap Media portrays romantic relationships as a
whirlwind of emotions that ends in a happily ever after in the course of a few days; children s
movies are a larger perpetrator of this idea. But how accurate is this to real life relationships?
Research, including John Van Epp s book How to Avoid Falling in Love with a Jerk, tells us that a
healthy relationship is built on more than the initial emotions we feel. In chapter one of How to
Avoid Falling in Love with a Jerk, Epp discusses the importance of the love is blind phenomenon
where we either one, don t know how to identify predictors of relationship dissatisfaction or two,
become so attached to someone that we minimize predictors in the belief that things will get better.
The love is blind phenomenon causes discourse between the heart and mind, two things that need to
be harmonious in order for a healthy relationship. Epp also discusses the predictors of
(dis)satisfaction in order to find a partner that complements us and identify things that could result
in potential problems in the relationship. For the first chapter, I found the predictors to be the most
interesting point in this chapter. Epp identified five categories that seemed to play a large role in
marital satisfaction and they are compatibility potential, relationship skills, patterns from other
relationships, family patterns and background, and character and conscience traits. Compatibility
potential is the similarities

The Validity of Plutarch Essay
The first century AD gave birth to Plutarch of Chaeronea. He was born into the Greco Roman
world during the Pax Romana, a time of peace that which had not been seen in all of the country
s history. Plutarch, coming from an upper class family, was able to get a good education and find
a purpose to his life1. Philosophy was his calling and he was brilliant in his work. An aficionado of
the works of his forefathers in thought (from Zeno to Plato), Plutarchused their systems to take his
knack for observing the behavior of men and formulating the proper way to live. His essays, On
Being Aware of Moral Progress, On Listening, and How to Distinguish a Flatterer from a Friend,

Romans were complaining that Rome itself was becoming `a Greek city4. Greek became an
international language; cultured Romans would make a point to learn it and Greek slaves
introduced it to Roman families5.
Although it may have been an intellectual inspiration, much of Greece was still barren and the
economy was far from perfect. The country suffered from uniform poverty and the collapse of
autonomy6. From the decades of warring came a population on the downfall and a great decline in
merit. Whereas at its summit the Hellenic states could boast handsome temples, theatres, halls, and
palaces ... they found their monies being spent in maintaining wars and in offsetting a growing
unfavorable balance of trade7. The only cities with anything close to prosperous trade at this time
were Corinth and Patras. People were not concerned with anything but survival. Ancient beliefs of
morality and plain old goodness were lost. There was a need for someone, anyone, to turn this awful
trend around. Enter Plutarch.
The year AD 46 brought the new thinker into the world. Greece had experienced almost 250 years
of Roman rule by the time Plutarch was born and was in need of some serious ethical assistance.
Plutarch was born in Chaeronea, in the province of Boeotia which was approximately half the
distance between Athens and Delphi. He was born into an old family that was known to have been

Biography of Michael Jordan Essay example
Biography of Michael Jordan Michael Jeffrey Jordan is known by many people as the best
basketball player ever to play the game. Jordan played for the Chicago Bulls, helping them

most popular athlete in the sports world. He had a great influence on the people. Jordan was just
another great legend (Stein 2). Being a role model on and off the court Jordan showed his
abilities to play the game and his kindness towards other people, especially those who admired
him the most. His widespread appeal to fans has helped keep basketball one of the world s most

After he graduated from high school, he decided to go and play for the University of North
Carolina Where he was a big star and won a championship title with a last two second shot. He
was nominated player of the year. He then was drafted to the Chicago Bulls, where he had a long
list of outstanding accomplishments. Jordan s presence on the Chicago Bulls immediately
woke up the interest of the fans. The entire franchise was very enthusiastic and felt very positive
about their future. He was such a great player that on his first season he won the rookie of the
year award with 28.2 points per game. The Bulls had a losing record before they had Jordan.
After the Bulls had Jordan, nothing else but good things began to happen for this franchise. He
took the Bulls to the playoffs for five straight years in a row. But they would always loose to the
Detroit Pistons or Boston Celtics. One problem was that Jordan sometimes played at a level so
above his teammates that the Bulls failed to function as a team (Greene 8 9). During the 1989
90 season, The bulls signed Phil Jackson to be their new head coach. His new triangle plays
helped Jordan use his offensive abilities. As his desire to win a championship developed more and
more, he focused a little bit more on his defense than offense. As a result of his desire the Bulls
won their first championship in history for the season of 1990 91. After the end of this wonderful
and successful

This led to vigorous resistance with Ottawa especially over the relative share of taxes taken by the federal and provincial government. During Diefenbaker and then Pearson administration, the federal government made considerable concessions to the provinces mainly to conciliate Quebec. The provinces received sixteen percent of the income, corporation, and succession taxes gather by the federal government in late fifties. More importantly, the Pearson g yielded to the constant demand of Lesage and Levesque for the right of provinces to opt out of shared cost program in which the federal government paid a percentage of the costs incurred by a province that agreed to establish a particular program in line with principles laid out by the federal government . • 3. Foreshadowing In The Chocolate War The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier is a book that provides a sneak peek behind the scenes at the harmony before the havoc. The book provides a look at how one person fights through the battle of finding oneself, trying to fix a mistake they made, and how it affects those around them. The Chocolate War begins with the line They murdered him. An opening that, at first lead to confusion, then became an enormous point of foreshadowing in the story. The author begins by creating a sensory image of our characters playing football, getting injured, and leading the reader to believe that this is what the story would be about. Then sits Carter, Trinity s star football player, the group s president and Archie s right hand man. At the bottom of the Vigils food chain is Obie the errand boy, a student who does every possible thing to stay in the Vigils good graces such as handing out Archie s assignments. • 4. Skills Deduction Essay THEORY OF SKILL ACQUISITION BY HUBERT AND STUART DREYFUS Sam Sedaei One of the major aspects of traditional epistemology, and its manifestation in artificial intelligence research and the philosophy of mind is its emphasis on the formal system of deduction and premises and propositional knowledge. Hubert and Stuart Dreyfus argue that this formal system of deduction is one of the problems with traditional epistemology, since much of our sense of judgment and the process which we go through to form beliefs is not a matter of starting with premises and by plugging them into a formula in order to deduct conclusions. But rather it is a gradual process that involves being embodied in different ways and developing skills that would make it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the third stage, competence, the agent starts becoming personally involved with the task. He starts to see more than one option from which he has to choose the best one. For instance, at some point he realizes that he can either take away the opponent s knight, or he can give up his own knight but take the opponent s queen. In the forth stage or proficiency stage, the performer, while intuitively understanding his task, still thinks analytically about his actions. For instance, despite having so much experience in chess, he might still have to think and consider alternative moves in critical situations by predicting what the opponent is going to play next. The last stage is called expertise. Experts in general know what to do based on mature understanding of the task. An expert has had so much experience with the task that the skill of doing the task is a part of him. He acts upon correct intuitions without analytically thinking about his every move. For instance in chess, he has had so much experience playing that no matter what the arrangement of the chess pieces are, it is highly likely that he has been in the same situation before and is able to decide what the right move is in a real short amount of time. I was totally unfamiliar with its purpose and syntax, and the interface is merely characters of same font and size. I thought it is something only for computer science students and does not have anything to do with web design and interaction. Things changed a lot as I learn to use it. In fact, such flat interface excludes all graphical display formats in regular commands thus makes it clearer to find the target directory and file by looking their names and types (e.g. style.css) returned after the ls command. • 8. Baptism Is A Sacred Rite 1.A. What is baptism? Baptism is a sacred rite that admits a candidate into the Christian community. Baptism is used by most Christian variants to signify the person s initiation into the beliefs and practices of the Christian community. Baptism is a purifying ritual generally involving water, and welcomes one into the Christian community. Most Christian variants recognise baptism as necessary for redemption of the soul. Baptism is a ceremonial act undertaken after a person accepts Jesus Christ as his or her Lord and saviour. This is usually done in the presence of the church body as a public proclamation of one s faith. B. What is the history behind Baptism? Jews practised the act of baptism as a traditional act of purification and the initiation of changes to Judaism long before the coming of the Messiah. The origins of baptism might be found in the book of Leviticus where the Levite priests were commanded to perform a symbolic cleansing in water before and after performing their priestly duties. Leviticus 16:4 tells us, He is to put on the sacred linen tunic, with linen undergarments next to his body; he is to tie the linen sash around him and put on the linen turban. These are sacred garments; so he must bathe himself with water before he puts them on. Peter pointed out that the water of the flood symbolizes bapВtism that now saves you (1 Pet. 3:21). The best representation of globalisation is the process in which businesses create international influence where they can then begin to operate on a global scale (Al Rodhan Stoudmann, 2006). Third world countries like Cuba who are seen as economically weak will have a harder time being incorporated into the global world and therefore politically, the country will not excel as much as it could. Emigrants who paid their own way to Virginia got fifty acres of land. There would not be mere tenants. Civil authority would control the military. A council of burgesses, representatives chosen by the inhabitants of the colony for their government, would be convened as the House of Burgesses. The governor could veto their actions and the company still had overall control of the venture, but the settlers would have a say in their own government, including the right of the House of Burgesses to introduce money bills. The first meeting was on July 30, 1619. It was held in the choir of the church on Jamestown Island. It lasted for six days, but was cut short by the disease, Malaria. Problems began to strike, like a massacre from the Native Americans where they killed 400 colonists. As hard as the government tried to conceal the problems, the king heard about them. He made virginia a crown colony. The king divided the colony into eight shires. By 1643, there were 15 shires! Most jobs were simply commanded to people. Only the representatives got votes to represent. Each shire would send a vote for a representative to go and work in the House, rather than have it be just rich people. The narrator opens with a description of himself, his employees, and the fact that his business has recently grown. Soon after, the narrator, who is a lawyer, hires an additional employee by the name of Bartleby, the namesake of the story. He then proceeds to tell the reader all he knows of Bartleby: how he started off copying as desired; how he then preferred not to do the tasks that were asked of him; how he was eventually fired but refused to leave, even when the lawyer moved his practice; how he was put into prison; and how he died of starvation while incarcerated. According to Todd Davis, the lawyer is a man who has been led toward a realization of his shortcomings by his encounter with Bartleby (184). Furthermore, this realization has to do with the narrator s struggle between horological comfort and chronometrical ideals, or, in other words, his struggle between secular and divine principles (Davis 185). Since the protagonist of a story is, by definition, the main character that goes through a conflict, we can thereby deduce that the lawyer is the protagonist of Bartleby, the Scrivener. To go further, the implication that the lawyer is the protagonist also suggests that Bartleby is the antagonist, and this truly is the case. Notably, we cannot possibly know the real true Bartleby as he would describe himself because we only know of the lawyer s interpretation of him (Davis 184). This means that although Bartleby is the main focus of the narrative, he cannot be the main character. Additionally, Bartleby is the cause for the narrator s strife, and this reinforces his antagonistic role even though he is not a bad guy like some antagonists. In fact, Bartleby is more on the good side. The reader, like the narrator, feels compassion and sympathy for this poor soul, but, again, this is the cause for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The fact of the matter is that I am being assessed a fine of several thousand dollars based on video evidence that my guest damaged two ceiling tiles. Although I find any damageto what I consider my home to be a personal affront and a despicable act, I strongly feel that in this situation the punishment is exceedingly disproportionate to the crime. The damage that they caused is, unfortunately, a normal amount of damage for Commons on a weekend night. Students frequently vandalize this dorm, and that is disgraceful, however one small, isolated incident is not indicative of responsibility for a second incident with much greater damages. The damages have not stopped since Ryan and the other individual shown in the video have left campus. I believe that it is clear that a portion of residents in Commons simply continue damaging Commons. As a result of this case, I have been placed on deferred suspension for nearly an entire year. The instrumentation of these brass bands emphasized brass instruments, polyphonic musical style with a carrying tone, sectional playing within the band; many of these characteristics translated into early jazz forms. Though the label suggests a band comprising solely brass musicians, early Louisiana bands also included clarinet and saxophone. In the smaller bands used for indoor performances, a smaller string band was used, composed of cornet, violin, guitar, bass, and piano. For instance, Snowden justifies his act by stating that he relied on the U.S Constitution, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the 1945 Nuremberg declaration. He provides his explanation for his shift from the his earlier held philosophy of nationalism by noting that people have an international duty that surpasses their national obligations of loyalty, (Scheuerman, 2014). He further expounds that sometimes national loyalty leads to national relativism whereby people overlook their country s evils, instead preferring to focus on distant and external evils. Generally, intelligence systems are extensively concealed, which exposes them to potential abuse by those in charge. This results in abuse of human rights such as privacy rights that is detrimental to the very security that such systems ought to safeguard. As such, blowing the whistle on such activities can be an effective mechanism of exposing the ills that characterize intelligence systems. Furthermore, Scheurman (2014) argues that a requirement for whistleblower identity disclosure as proposed in Sagar s framework enhances their opportunity to fulfill their obligations to justify their actions. A silent film is that which consists of only the picture, and no sound. This was an era of truly transformative filmmaking, forcing writers and producers to have to step out of a comfort zone in order to allow purely visual expressions to touch their audiences and convey their stories. This was achieved through a greater emphasis on facial expressions and body language. Firstly, one of the greatest movies in the silent era was that by Keaton, Sherlock Jr. This film encompasses all the core principles of telling a story through silence and overcoming the cinematic boundaries of its day. The key to achieving this is through the direct expressiveness of the body language of the actors alongside the plot and how Keaton specifically selected the scenes. The film begins with a love story between a wealthy girl (Kathryn McGuire) and a projectionist at a local movie theatre. His dream to become a detective is what drives the film. A memorable scene in the movie is that in the candy shop when Keaton goes to buy the chocolates for the girl. This was performed entirely in pantomime, allowing the audience to get in touch with the film, and comprehend his desperation to woo the girl. He shadows Crane, who is larger in size than he is, mimicking his body language and gestures. This was done using a tracking shot. Prejudice And Racism Exposed In The Bible Generalities and blanket statements can be refuted because of the all or nothing aspect, and this certainly is the case with the statement that everyone is a little bit racist. Racism does exist; that is without question. However, I am not willing to say that every human has racist tendencies within his/her heart. In the beginning of time, God created man in his image (Genesis 1:29, New King James Version). In both the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 10:17, New King James Version) and the New Testament (Romans 2:11, New King James Version), we read that God does not show respect or partiality to any person. Therefore, if man is created in God s image, and God does not show partiality to any person, then the possibility exists that not everyone is a little bit racist. To say otherwise is equivalent to saying that God is racist. Another reason for my belief is my niece. Her dearest friend, Stina, had different color skin. In the scenario companies sell a differentiated product at different prices. • 43. The For Your Child s Winter Essay You can t miss the nip in the air, and as the year draws to an end, the mercury is going to dip even further. This also means it s time to pull out all those colourful woollies that have been languishing in the cupboard, and maybe buy some new ones to stay in sync with the season s trends. Gone are the days when the over sized woolens came in monotonous and boring winter shades. Now, you can splurge on colours and watch your child radiate the brightness. Red is big for girls and boys, and the metallics that lit up the runways in the fall are also gracing kids winter lines. When choosing woolens for your child, practicality is of utmost importance. But don t overlook the fashion angle. Kids, these days, are extremely conscious about what they wear. Here are a few winter must haves for your child. 1. Just jackets Your child s winter wardrobe would be incomplete without a warm and colourful jacket. Depending on where you are stationed, you can opt for a quilt lined jacket, a football jacket, a classic denim one or the contemporary ones that look more like coats. Cotton, Light and medium poly fill jackets are in fashion these days, with sweat jackets ruling the fashion scene. Jackets, not only provide ample warmth, but when zipped right up, take care of the entire upper torso without you having to worry much. Little girls can add a few frills and flowers to their jackets without thinking twice. And if it s not too cold, they can even go for chic shrugs. Tip: Here s a word ... • 47. Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets Analysis In Mr. Penumbra s 24 Hour Bookstore, Robin Sloan uses the main character of Clay Jannon and the supporting characters of Kat Potente and Neel Shah to prove the importance of having accomplices when a protagonist tries to uncover a mystery. This theme is also prominent in J.K. Rowling s book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where the protagonist, Harry Potter, is supported by his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. Both Sloan and Rowling argue that the allies of the hero are just as significant as the hero himself by creating characters that resemble one another to an extreme extent. First, the similarities between the two main characters, Clay Jannon and Harry Potter, is most visible when comparing the two quests that the boys have to face. Though their age difference is quite immense, their personalities are reflective in the sense that they are of low self esteem at the beginning of the story. Clay Jannon is unemployed and feeling lost when he wanders into Mr. Penumbra s 24 Hour Bookstore, thinking, ...this is exactly the kind of store that makes you want to buy a book about a teenage wizard. This is the kind of store that makes you want to be a teenage wizard (p.12). Speaking of teenage wizards, 13 year old Harry Potter comes to HogwartsSchool of Witchcraft and Wizardry with his peers under the impression that he is some kind of god, being the boy who lived . Though he seems popular from the start, he is doubting how he could be so great when he does not know anything about being a wizard. Each boy is called to a quest and gathers a team of their closest companions to join them. In Mr. Penumbra s 24 Hour Bookstore, Clay makes his group out of his closest friends to help him decode Aldus Manutius codex vitae, explaining, I have a rogue (that s me) and a wizard (that s Kat) (p. 117). He then recruits his warrior, Neel Shah, and his mentor, Mr. Penumbra. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry s team consists of his best friends, Ron and Hermione, with the help of his teacher, Dumbledore. Throughout their journeys, the two protagonists experience self discovery and heightened self esteem. Eventually, the main character must face the ultimate challenge alone, having gained enough ... • 48. Risk and Return Return, Risk and The Security Market Line An Introduction to Risk and Return Whether it is investing, driving or just walking down the street, everyone exposes themselves to risk. Your personality and lifestyle play a big role in how much risk you are comfortably able to take on. If you invest in stocks and have trouble sleeping at night, you are probably taking on too much risk. (For more insight, see A Guide to Portfolio Construction.) Risk is defined as the chance that an investment s actual return will be different than expected. This includes the possibility of losing some or all of the original investment. Those of us who work hard for every penny we earn have a hard time parting with money. Therefore, people with less ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The variance of a portfolio s return is a function of the variance of the component assets as well as the covariance between each of them. Covariance is a measure of the degree to which returns on two risky assets move in tandem. A positive covariance means that asset returns move together. A negative covariance means returns move inversely. Covariance is closely related to correlation, wherein the difference between the two is that the latter factors in the standard deviation. Modern portfolio theory says that portfolio variance can be reduced by choosing asset classes with a low or negative covariance, such as stocks and bonds. This type of diversification is used to reduce risk. Portfolio variance looks at the covariance or correlation coefficient for the securities in the portfolio. Portfolio ... The inner hair cells form synapses with the dendrites of the bipolar neurons whose axons give rise to the cochlear branch of the eighth cranial nerve. The central auditory system involves several brain stem nuclei, including the cochlear nuclei, superior olivary complexes, and inferior colliculi. The medial geniculate nucleus relays auditory information to the primary auditory cortex on the medial surface of the temporal lobe. • 50. Van Gogh s Starry Night In Vincent Van Gogh s Starry Night there are many aspects of the artwork that are symbolic of Van Gogh s life struggles. It is easy for the viewer to assume that the aspects of Starry Night represent van Gogh s time in the asylum, however, not all aspects represent his insanity and isolation. Starry Night is van Gogh s representation of his biography inspired by his loss of faith, which can be seen and supported by the symbols of the church and the stars. It is fair to say van Gogh was not in a good emotional place when he painted Starry Night. On May 8th 1889, van Gogh entered the hospital of St. Paul de Mausole at St. RГ©my because of his mental instability. He did not leave for many weeks therefore he was able to devote the majority of his time to his paintings. van Gogh painted Starry Night in June between 16 18. The mountains are the ones he could see from his cell window but are exaggerated to reflect this idea of another world or religion that he had connected with in the past (Soth). According to James Elkins, van Gogh had very passionate, if not obscure, thoughts about how his art worked as religion (Elkins 12). Many scholars can see the relationship but it is not evident to the common eye. There is definitely a relationship that ties Starry Night to van Gogh s spiritual life, but it is the loss of his spiritual life that influenced this piece of artwork. In Starry Night (figure 1) there is a church that is not based off the church in the town of St. RГ©my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. The Importance Of Looking Before You Leap Essay The Importance of Looking Before You Leap Media portrays romantic relationships as a whirlwind of emotions that ends in a happily ever after in the course of a few days; children s movies are a larger perpetrator of this idea. But how accurate is this to real life relationships? Research, including John Van Epp s book How to Avoid Falling in Love with a Jerk, tells us that a healthy relationship is built on more than the initial emotions we feel. In chapter one of How to Avoid Falling in Love with a Jerk, Epp discusses the importance of the love is blind phenomenon where we either one, don t know how to identify predictors of relationship dissatisfaction or two, become so attached to someone that we minimize predictors in the belief that things will get better. The love is blind phenomenon causes discourse between the heart and mind, two things that need to be harmonious in order for a healthy relationship. Epp also discusses the predictors of (dis)satisfaction in order to find a partner that complements us and identify things that could result in potential problems in the relationship. For the first chapter, I found the predictors to be the most interesting point in this chapter. Epp identified five categories that seemed to play a large role in marital satisfaction and they are compatibility potential, relationship skills, patterns from other relationships, family patterns and background, and character and conscience traits. Compatibility potential is the similarities ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From the decades of warring came a population on the downfall and a great decline in merit. Whereas at its summit the Hellenic states could boast handsome temples, theatres, halls, and palaces ... they found their monies being spent in maintaining wars and in offsetting a growing unfavorable balance of trade7. The only cities with anything close to prosperous trade at this time were Corinth and Patras. People were not concerned with anything but survival. Ancient beliefs of morality and plain old goodness were lost. There was a need for someone, anyone, to turn this awful trend around. Enter Plutarch. The year AD 46 brought the new thinker into the world. Greece had experienced almost 250 years of Roman rule by the time Plutarch was born and was in need of some serious ethical assistance. After the Bulls had Jordan, nothing else but good things began to happen for this franchise. He took the Bulls to the playoffs for five straight years in a row. But they would always loose to the Detroit Pistons or Boston Celtics. One problem was that Jordan sometimes played at a level so above his teammates that the Bulls failed to function as a team (Greene 8 9). During the 1989 90 season, The bulls signed Phil Jackson to be their new head coach. His new triangle plays helped Jordan use his offensive abilities. As his desire to win a championship developed more and more, he focused a little bit more on his defense than offense. As a result of his desire the Bulls won their first championship in history for the season of 1990 91. After the end of this wonderful and successful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
