The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional organization consisting of 7 member states located around the Bay of Bengal. It was established in 1997 to promote cooperation in trade, technology, energy, transportation, tourism, and fisheries. It has since expanded cooperation to include agriculture, public health, poverty alleviation, and other areas. BIMSTEC aims to accelerate economic growth and social progress through joint projects and assistance in education and technical fields. Its objectives are to create an enabling environment for rapid economic development and promote cooperation that benefits the people of member states.
