Deng Xiaoping s Massive Reform Set China on a...
He was the Napoleon of China. At just four feet eleven inches tall. Deng Xiaoping set China on a
sky rocketing course. When Deng Xiaoping took control of China in 1978 the economy was in
a backwards state , also in the early 1980s more than 80% of China was in poverty, but two
decades later after the massive reforms of Deng Xiaoping, the poverty level drastically decreased.
This incredible task could have only been done though the outstanding leadership and policies of
people like Deng Xiaoping. Deng Xiaoping was a revolutionary and truly paramount leader, who
recreated the Chinese economy for rapid modernization; adopted ideas capitalism bringing millions
of Chinese citizens out of poverty, and instigating rapid economic growth; and he... Show more

In 1978 when Deng came into official power China had greatly suffered economically. This was
the result of the orthodox socialist and communist policies implemented largely during the
Cultural Revolution. China s economic growth in the 1960s and 1970s was very slow, almost
stagnant (World Bank), this lead to the expected result of being left in the dust by many
countries in Asia, such as Japan. Also in 1978 the population of China living in a rural situation
was at least 76.3% (Reuters) of the total Chinese population, equivalent to around 743,463,800
people living in China. However when Deng took over and put his economic policies in place,
which included, but were not limited to: opening China to foreign trade. His other economic
policies eased the government control over economics and it resulted in a large boost of
economic growth, this economic growth extended even past the time he resigned in the 1990s.
For instance the GDP (Gross Domestic Product, a determiner of the quality of life) per capita in
1978 was 154.07 billion U.S dollars (World Bank), just 30 years later the Chinese GDP per capita
in 2008 skyrocketed to 3,170 billion U.S dollars (World Bank). This increase from 154.07 billion
U.S dollars to 3,170 billion U.S dollars represents an approximate whopping 20.57% increase in its
GDP in only 30 years after Deng implemented his reforms and

The Three Causes And Effects Of Genocide In Rwanda
. Genocide is the deliberate killing of a group of people of the same race, religion or ethnicity. This
word is derived from a combination of a Greek word genos ( race or tribe ) and a Latin word cide (
killing ). In 1994, in the beginning of April, the same has happened in Rwanda. A genocide. One
group of people who were called Hutus inhumanely killed Tutsis, and in only 100 days
approximately 800000 people were slaughtered (Stapleton 25).
Before the colonial period in Rwanda, there were three classifications of people. Hutus, who made
up the majority of the population 84%, Tutsi who were only 17% and Twa who only made up 1%.
Hutus were from less privileged families and were cultivators, Tutsis were cattle herders and
from rich families, and Twa were potters and were outshined by the other groups (Stapleton 28).
However, these classifications were based on the number of cattle people owned. People who
owned 10 cows or more were considered Tutsi and people with less than 10 cows were considered
Hutu. People could shift from being a Hutu to a Tutsi or vice versa depending on the number of
cattle they had. Before colonization Tutsis and Hutus lived peacefully (Warren 19).
After losing in World War I, Germany lost all its colonies in Africa, Ruanda which was also one of
Germany colonies, and was given to Belgians. In 1916, Belgians took control (Kinzer 24). They
found the country politically stable and organized such that they couldn t impose their own rules.

What{s Catatonic Schizophrenia
Catatonic Schizophrenia is a specific type of schizophrenia, or brain malfunction, which is
distinguished by extreme, yet direct opposite behaviors. Its symptoms focus on movement and
motor skills. You might be more familiar with the catatonic stupor , where the individual is
incapable of movement, speech or response to external stimuli.
Oppositely, catatonic schizophrenia manifests as voluntary bizarre movements, repetitive
nonsensical words and/or sounds. Basically, an individual gets stuck either in a trance like state or
in a hyper excited state. Both types are serious, but treatable.
To receive a diagnosis of catatonic schizophrenia, an individual must first be diagnosed with
schizophrenia. Once all the symptoms are evaluated, it will become obvious whether or not they
qualify for the specific catatonic diagnosis.
What are Symptoms Specific to Catatonic Schizophrenia?
Malfunctioning Motor Skills Incapable of body movement. Mutism. Body clenched in a stiff
position. No awareness of environment.
Waxy Flexibility Person appears like a wax figure, remaining immobile, but body is flexible. For
example, if a limb is repositioned, the individual will hold it in that position and stare, barely
blinking until the limb falls back down from fatigue.
Excessive, Constant Mobility Frenzied pacing, spinning in circles, flailing of arms, constantly
moving but going nowhere.
Bizarre Movement curious mannerisms, grimacing, rocking, exhibiting weird or

Elements Of Critical Thinking
One of the specific feature of critical thinking that I would like to talk about is keep an open
mind. I seem to have a big problem with this one myself. I never keep an open mind when it
comes to thinking because over the years I felt that my way or decision making would be the right
one without the input of others. I have learned the hard way that listening to others turned out to
be a good thing because their insight on things would make others make a better decision for
themselves or even myself. Open mindedness is characterized by being receptive to other views
and having the willingness to change views with new facts and evidence. Open mindedness
increases intellectual capabilities by allowing for new experiences and perspectives. A narrow

national, and global scale. It is arguably the world s most important privately controlled economic

It all began in his late 20s, having no background knowledge in retailing at all, as he opened up
his very first variety store entitled Walton s Five and Dime. It was right then and there that
Walton began to offer low prices compared to the other businesses in the local area. His idea of
offering low prices surprisingly worked and he soon found himself venturing out and
purchasing 15 variety stores all located around the central area by 1960. Everyone in town
thought Sam was nuts for taking such a serious risk on drastically cutting back prices, but Sam
never felt the least bit worried about his strategy. In 1962, the first Wal Mart opened its doors,
along with two other well known discounting chains, K Mart and Woolco. Sam stood his ground
and before he knew it 18 Wal Marts were officially up and operating smoothly and successfully in
two states. The rest is simply history. Wal Mart s Corporate Culture Every successful business or
company must have developed a strong corporate culture in order to be successful in what they
do. In Wal Mart s case, profit is the goal, but service is the process ( Corporate Culture 20). While
Wal Mart began as a discounted variety store, the company has transformed into having Wal Mart
Supercenters, Wal Mart Neighborhood Markets, and Sam s Clubs across the world. Many
Americans today are very familiar with Wal Mart Supercenters, but not so much with Wal Mart

Natural and Synthetic Materials
Textiles are made up from natural or man made fibres or a combination of both. Fibres are thin,
hair like structures (Blair, n.d: online) that are categorized into two types: long filament fibres and
short staple fibres. Natural fibres are usually staple, whilst man made fibres are filament, with the
exception of silkthat comes from a natural source. These raw fibres are spun to produce a long,
continuous thread referred to as yarn, which is then used in a series of methods that include,
stitching, knitting and weaving in order to produce a fabric. The content, construction and finish of
a fabric can determine it s aesthetic and functional qualities. This essay will explore the
classifications and characteristics of fibres, yarns and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Its desirability and expensive price has prompted cheaper man made imitations. (Udale,
2008)(IYNF, 2009)
Man made fibres account for 68% of fibres used worldwide (CRFS, 2010: online). In the textile
industry, man made fibres are categorized into two main types: cellulosic polymers and non
cellulosic polymers. Cellulosic polymers are derived from the cellulose extracted from natural
sources, such as plants and trees. The cellulose is then chemically treated to produce fibres such as
rayon, acetate and triacetate. Non cellulosic polymers are those that are produced synthetically
from different chemical compounds in order to produce fibres such as nylon, polyester and acrylic.
(Udale, 2008)
Often referred to as artificial silk because of its silk like aesthetic, rayon was one of the first man
made fabrics to be developed having been in production since 1885 (Udale, 2008). Constructed
from the cellulose of wood pulp, it was made to simulate natural fibres as well as to provide
characteristics of its own (Corbman, 1983: p.9). Like cotton, it is soft, comfortable and versatile; it
blends well with other fibres, and is often used for evening gowns as an alternative to silk
because of its good drape. It is also a highly absorbent material that can be dyed easily. The
durability of rayon is fairly low, it is easily damaged through abrasion and can shrink when washed,
prompting dry clean aftercare instructions. (Swicol, 2010).
Acetate is silk like

The Effects Of Private Participation On Infrastructure
This paper examines the effects of private participation in infrastructure (PPI) in the developing
world on the provision of infrastructure services. This process is colloquially referred to as
privatization and involves the transfer of previously state owned and operated infrastructure assets
to operation and sometimes ownership by the private sector. Analysis of more than two decades
worth of evidence showed that, in terms of the impact on infrastructureprovision, PPI tends to
provide positive gains in efficiency, quality of and access to infrastructure services. With regard to
realizing the benefits of privatization, effective regulation and the introduction of competition are
crucial. Notably, positive impacts from PPI are not seen... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand I was familiar with the arguments of the proponents of privatization, who argue
that private companies are better positioned than the government to provide most services in an
efficient manner. In the face of this debate I wanted to explore the evidence in an attempt to reach
some fact based conclusions about the impact of the privatization of infrastructure service on their
delivery.
3.The Research Process
Thankfully PPI in the developing world has been ongoing for over two decades at this point, so
there is a substantial body of academic literature on the impact of infrastructure privatization for
specific cases and for each infrastructure sector.
Research for this paper was mainly conducted through Georgetown Library resources and Google
Scholar. Case studies for infrastructure privatization projects are a plenty and I had to sift through
them to identify more comprehensive reports that looked at a set of case studies or a specific
sector. Most comprehensive reports on infrastructure privatization in the developing world date
from the early 2000s, though I was able to find two recent comprehensive assessments of the
evidence that provided me fresh overviews of the current knowledge base and leads for further
sources.

Across the developing world, private participation in infrastructure accounts for less than 20% of

The Challenges In Sports And The Socialization Of Sports...
In North America, sports are an important for socialization. The definition of socialization from
the book Sports in Society by Jay Coakley is a process of learning and social development, which
occurs as we interact with one another and become familiar with the social worlds. Sports is an
easy way for socializationbut it is also other thing that can do the same as sports. I believe that
sports is important for socialization from my own experience but it is not necessary for
everyone. Sports are essential in American Society. It s practically everywhere in people s lives.
If everyone was asked about what their favorite sport is, they could answer quickly. Sports is a
microcosm in the U.S. It makes up a big portion of American culture. Some people have been in
sports as a young kid by the parents so their kids can learn how to socialize. Kids learn how to be
normal with coaches, officials, parents, and other children. The question is, should we put our
kids in sports to socialize? I say yes, but the behavior of the child should be monitored. If the
child is not doing well, then he/she should be taken out and put in something else. From my
experience, I played football at the age of 7. I can t remember too many things about me
socializing too much. I feel like I was a loner with others but at home I was comfortable and
social. For children in Middle, I believe that sports or some form of extracurricular activity is
important for socialization. That is the age where

Science vs. Nature as a Means of Obtaining Perfection in...
Although we may mask our insecurities with false confidence and bravado, deep down most
people crave perfection. As the majority of us learn as we age, this idea of perfection is
unobtainable. The older we get, the more we tend to accept the flaws and imperfections that make
us individuals. However, there are others who never learn the hard lesson of acceptance. Instead
they spend ridiculous amounts of money on surgeries, creams and concoctions in order to rid
themselves of these marks and insecurities. It s a constant battle, a fork in the road if you may,
between science and nature. On one side there s the high road of nature and acceptance, and on the
other there s the scientific shortcut that, in reality, just continues to mask the original problem. The
Birthmark leads us to believe that this is perhaps a topic Hawthorne struggled with himself.
Hawthorne clearly displays his decided distaste for science and its unnatural ways in his short story,
The Birthmark.
Aylmer, the main character of the story, is a brilliant scientist/alchemist. He possesses a belief in
man s ultimate control over nature , and thinks there is nothing man can t overcome (Harun). His
obsession with his wife Georgiana s small birth mark, which resembles a hand, begins after they
re married. Aylmer is fixated with the idea of Georgiana s perfection; he believes that in order for
him to experience perfect love, he must have a perfect woman to love (Norman). His obsession and
distaste gradually wear

Analysis Of Mary Shelley s Frankenstein Essay
In Shelley s Frankenstein, the reader feels great sympathy for the female characters in the novel.
The characters Caroline Beaufort, Elizabeth Lavenza and Justine are characterized as good hearted
and upright woman, but nevertheless face an injustice death. In Frankenstein, women in the text are
being destructed through an inevitable miserable fate to get the idea of the passive woman that
devotes herself to the benefactor and her lack of agency across, in which is demonstrated in the
passivity of Caroline, Elizabeth and Justine s role that leads to their misery.
The first victim in Shelley s novel, Caroline, faces extreme destitution in the beginning of her life in
which her situation is mediated by a benefactor, Alphonse Frankenstein; the passivity of Caroline s
role is characterized by the absence of agency in the choices that she makes and a death that is
unjust but unavoidable that she has no power of rewinding. At the beginning of the novel, we
come to know Caroline as destituted and orphaned when Alphonse Frankenstein finds Caroline
mourning over the death of her father Beaufort. However, Caroline s hardship terminates when
she is rescued by Alphonse when Alphonse came like a protecting spirit to the poor girl, who
committed herself to his care (Shelley, p.19) and in which after two years after this event, Caroline
became his wife (Shelley, p.19). Caroline s dependence and eventual marriage to Alphonse is
significant in that it perfectly illustrates her

Touch analysis
Touch Football was only formalized in the 1970 s and is now played in all of Australia. Coaches
of Rugby teams used variations of for offseason activities. The game came to be known as Touch
Rugby/Football, now simply known as touch. The main differences in the rules of the game of
touch and rugby league is that there is no tackling you have to touch the attacking player instead,
kicking is not allowed, the dummy half cannot get touched and the ball is not allowed to drop to the
ground.
In the game of touch there are three positions and two players at each position on the field, the
positions are middle, link and wing. The main roles for the middle are to ruck/drive the ball
down the field in attack and to close down the defence. The predominant energy system used at a
professional level is the lactic acid system but as they are subbed off regularly and at a senior
high school level we do not have the luxury of enough players to sub on the energy system used
changes to the aerobic system. Knowledge of rucking patterns and organisation helps make a great
middle.
The key roles in the position of link are to set up tries for the wing position and controlling the
defensive and offensive line. The focal energy system used by the link position is the lactic acid
system. The ability to find gaps in the defence separates good links from great ones.
Lastly, the wing position, finishes off the set plays by scoring

Protest For The National Anthem Of The United States
Emily Petrochuk Professor Psenicka English 102 31 October 2016 Protests to the National
Anthem of the United States A famous sports figure in history once said, I cannot stand and sing
the anthem. I cannot salute the flag. I know that I am a black man in a white world (McKirdy).
At first glance, this quote seems to be something that would have been said by the San Francisco
49ers Quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, in light of his recent protests, as well as other sports
players who decided to follow suit, to the playing of the national anthem before football games.
However, this is not the case. The above quote was written in the 1972 autobiography, I Never
Had it Made, written by Jackie Robinson, an African American Baseball player (McKirdy).
Colin Kaepernick obviously felt the same as Jackie Robinson did when he sat on the bench
rather than standing during a rendition of the national anthem before a preseason game against
the Green Bay Packers on August 26. During an interview with the media following the game,
Kaepernick explained why he refused to stand for the anthem, I am not going to stand up to
show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is
bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in
the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder (Wyche). Kaepernick explains
that he refused to stand for the national anthem because of the

Measure Growth During American War History And Musicality...
Chapter Four: Data Analysis and Findings The purpose of the study was to measure growth in
American war history and musicality while learning repertoire from various war periods,
identifying the major wars of the United States with dates, and describing the origins of Veteran s
Day. Ten different sub questions and research instruments were used to measure growth during the
process of preparing for the Veterans Day Concert. Each instrument was inserted into Google
Forms and delivered to each student via Google Classroom. Pre Tests were given to students during
the third week of school. Post tests were given to students two weeks prior to the final performance.
Scores may have been effected by possible guessing or misspelled words in the students written
responses. The data is reflective of the hypothesis in the fact that sixth grade students scored low
and eighth grade students scored higher on the pretests. However, on certain pretests, the seventh
grade students actually scored higher than some eighth grade students. Data Analysis Question 1:
Can students demonstrate music growth through naming letter names of notes written on the staff
with treble and bass clefs from F2 to G5? The research instrument entitled Grand Staff required
students to generate letter names of notes placed on the staff with treble and bass clefs. Seventh
and eighth grade students would have prior knowledge of note letter names from previous years in

Harvesters Judgement Act Analysis
Social Legislation at the turn of the twentieth century made Australia a more reformed and
progressive nation as a whole. Social Legislation was the result of Federation and made Australia
more developed compared to other countries as their identity was stronger and Australia had a high
standard of living at the time. Social legislation had three main acts which were Harvester
Judgement (1907), Invalid and Old AgePensions (1908) and Maternity Allowance (1912), these
schemes mainly benefited white Australians. The Harvesters judgement act was established in
1907 and was made so male workers would have an appropriate wagethat could support their wife
and three children. It was created by Justice Henry Bourne Higgens who was the president of the
commonwealth conciliation and arbitration court at the time. Before the act workers would work
very long hours with very little pay. Working conditions were hard and dangerous and due to the
low wage protective clothing and hygiene was an issue. In the 1890 s there were industrial
disputes due to conditions and wage which as a result meant that the new federal government at
the time of federation had to resolve this without turning to violence. In conclusion they found
wage the biggest issue after listening to worker s testimony s about their issues. It was only fair
that a minimum wage was to be made which consisted of seven shillings a day or 42 a week
which is roughly $4.20. This was the first time that employers were

Malocclusions can greatly affect the way you feel about your teeth and smile, how you chew,
and your ability to brush and floss properly. #6: Why should malocclusions be treated? While
some reasons may be more geared toward the aesthetics of a smile, treating malocclusions is
very important in order to reduce a slew of issues. When teeth are crowded or the alignment is

Sports can impact their life and teach them competition, respectand responsibility. Three very
valuable traits any man or woman will need in their life. Without sports, children miss out on a
valuable experience to learn lifelong traits at a young age. My Dad was a high school phenom at
hockey, so of course when he had a son, he wanted his son to play. As soon as I could walk, I was
on skates. Hockey became a passion for me, I learned to love putting on the sweater and
representing my home town. If my Dad never put me on skates, I would have missed out on one
of the best experiences of my life. The parents who played sports competitively are typically the
ones, that are rushing their own kids into sports at a young age. They want their kid to have the
same experience they had. My dad never missed a game, he was always there after the game telling
me, You played a hell of a game. or Whats up? What was going on out there? No matter what he
said, it was always the truth. Ever since a young age I watched the Vikings game every Sunday. My

The Importance Of Art Therapy
Art therapy involves using art to facilitate discussion with an art psychotherapist or therapist, using
art materials that can help express thoughts and feelings. It also can provide another way of
communicating when it is hard to talk. There is no need to be good at art; the aim is not to
improve your skills. In art therapy, you will have time to talk and think about your difficulties with
the art psychotherapist or therapist, and it may help you to understand yourself better, gain
insight and for change to occur. Art therapy is the use of the visual arts and the creative process
within a therapeutic relationship to support and maintain the psychological and physical health of
individuals of all ages. It is based on research that art making is a health enhancing practice that
positively impacts the quality of life. Art therapists are credited professionals who use specific art
based approaches with children, adults, groups and families. To support and maintain a quality of
life. The foundation of art therapy is most closely linked to psychoanalysis, that images come
from the unconscious. Art therapy is a clinical treatment which aims to help clients explore
personal issues within a safe and supportive framework, to resolve emotional, psychological and
relationship difficulties. The use of art materials is a form of non verbal communication enabling
people to express and explore feelings which are very difficult and in some cases impossible to
convey through verbal language.

Theme Of Adversity In Theodore Roosevelt s The Hun Within...
In Theodore Roosevelt s The Hun within Our Gates (1917), the complete lack of adversity in
political views is expressed. The idea that any citizen who is not in die hard favor of World War
I is a traitor to the country is explained through Roosevelt s own explanation. Along with this
theme comes the representation of the total lack of diversity that was implemented in this time.
Not necessarily in race, but in ideas. Men like Roosevelt thought that there was one way to view
the country and if not that way than the ideas are wrong. Although some people still think that
way today, there is a lot more acceptance of broader views and a larger variety of opinions. Can

Gas turbine blades are subjected to high thermal loads caused by the high temperature of the gases
entering the cascade. The pressure difference between the blade pressure surface and the blade
suction surface induces tip leakage flow, which increases heat transfer in the blade tip region. In
this paper, the three dimensional flow and heat transfer are examined for an internally cooled blade
cascade with tip injection using numerical technique. The three dimensional turbulent flow was
obtained by solving Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes equations and the energy equation. The
Shear Stress Transport (SST) k пЃ· model was employed to represent turbulent flow. The cooling
air is injected from eleven holes with 3 mm diameter arranged along the blade chamber line. The

The Effects Of Beauty Standards On Body Image
The Effects of Beauty Standards
Understanding the effects of beauty standards to both men and women requires research of both
sexes and different orientations in regard to the influence the media has on them. While cultural
standards contribute to beauty standards, media carries most of the responsibility for swaying
public opinion of attractiveness. In order to find an answer as to why certain beauty standards
currently exist, one must examine the root cause: media.
Literature Reviewed
First Group of Studies Media and Body Image. In order to prevent continued negative effects on
body image by the media, it has been suggested that images that have been changed need to have
labels to prevent body dissatisfaction (Slater et al., 2012). Wang et al. (2010) provided evidence
that both men and women attempt to appear like the people portrayed in magazines. Men were
influenced by health and sports magazines, whereas women attempted to look like the models in
entertainment and fashion magazines (Wang, 2010). Participants in the Slater et al. (2012) study
showed that warning labels may help prevent the negative effects of media images, as they portray
an unrealistic ideal for the human body (Slater et al., 2012; Wang, 2010).
Second Groups of Studies Body Dissatisfaction. The development of removing pubic hair is caused
by body dissatisfaction, which relates to one s choice, physical attractiveness, and other key themes

Apollonian And Dionysian Analysis
It is common knowledge in the human world that people are different. Some people have
different color of skin and others have different kinds of personalities. Some people are mean
and critical of your behavior and others are lighthearted and flowing. When I was little, these
behaviors became evident and I realized that some people were just born to be mean and rather
judgmental. Some people were born good heart and they just love to be around other people,
consoling them and giving them advice for how to succeed in life. In Nietzsche s Apollonian and
Dionysianessay, he describes what it means to be these two types of personalities and how they
interact with each other. In the essay, he describes all walks of life, from the people that make...

As the words of Nancy Taylor explains, By analyzing Dionysian Apollonian aspects, we gain
insight into who we are and how we behave in this world. To begin with, we must first understand
the gods from which these two terms. Apollonism is based around the god Apollo. Apollo is the god
of many things, such medicine and the lyre. He is the god of healing and of all things beautiful.
Apollo is the god of the truth, wisdom and rational thought. When you think of rationality and
the ways that things should be logically done, you are thinking in an Apollonistic way. When
Apollo is depicted in sculpture, he is nude, displaying his clean cut body that shows no trace of
facial hair. The clean definition of his muscles should give on an idea of his rational and logical
personality. He is the predictable side of people, the side that tends to do what is normally
expected from someone on account of the current culture. The second type of personality would be
based on the god Dionysus. According to Steven Kreis, The Dionysian, which corresponds
roughly to Schopenhauer s conception of Will, is directly opposed to the Apollonian. Here we
have, in a great symbol of art, both the fair world of Apollo and its substratum, the terrible
wisdom of Silenus, and we can comprehend intuitively how they mutually require one another.
Therefore, one could easily assume some of the characteristics that Dionysus will have.
Dionysus is the god of wine, which is a source of intoxication that helps to sooth the mind. The
chariot of Dionysus is bedecked with flowers and garlands; panthers and tigers stride beneath his
yoke. He is the god of revelry which is to say, demonic behavior. People that are Dionysian like to
make spontaneous decisions and break all of the rules. These people live life to the fullest and don

Personal Narrative Essay On Snowboarding
But back to the problem at hand, I was sitting in the snow, half strapped into my snowboard,
trying to remember how to even stand up without absolutely eating it from how slippery the board
is on the snow. After a few embarrassing runs down a small hill next to the lift, I realized that I
definitely needed a short lesson with an instructor to refresh my memory. Luckily, since April isn t
exactly a popular time to go snowboarding, there were plenty of instructors open for a short 1 hour
lesson. There was a lot of falling involved, and I realized pretty quickly how dumb it was of me
to not wear waterproof clothing. A little over an hour later, the instructor and I reached the bottom

Mom and I got up early and started coffee and breakfast for everyone, and my dad and sister
joined us in the kitchen after they both got their showers. We got our equipment, headed down
to the lift, and rode it halfway up the mountain. The lifts were the only time that any of us
regretted not wearing heavy coats. When you re on the ground, the trees block most of the
wind, and you re actually moving and active. Sitting on those lifts, though, you were too high to
have the thick forest to protect against the wind, and you were stuck sitting still. It is one of the
best feelings to finally get off a ski lift and be able to move around and warm up again. I was
unbelievably sore from the previous day, so it took me awhile to get back into the flow of things
going down the mountain. I ve yet to find anything that gives you as much of a full body
workout as snowboarding does, and I was definitely way too out of shape to run for long periods
of time. Skiing is a lot easier on your muscles and your body as a whole, but it just didn t present
a challenge to me like snowboarding did, so I refused to trade in my board for a pair of skis.
Thankfully, my dad is getting old enough that he made pretty frequent stops that I definitely
needed to give my muscles a rest here and there. Sounds like a pretty basic trip, right? Then what

Sontag develops the idea that the hopeful fantasy is that when humans, need to come together to

Earth Stood Still, THEM!, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers and
The Thing from Another Planet, there were present anxieties about the military s, inefficiency. The
newer generation held onto the fear of becoming like the older generation, whom became the

Sense of Identity and Collegiate Academic Achievement The authors of this article were presenting
the results of their investigation into the relationship between grade point average (GPA) and the
Big Five personality traits of agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability extraversion
and openness. The subject of this investigation was 434 second semester freshman students
enrolled in an introductory psychology course. The focus of the investigation was to determine
if an individual s sense of identity could be interpreted as a difference variable (Lounsbury, et.
al., 2005, p. 501) that could be measured within a range of low to high. The author s identified
that up until this point much of the research in this area approached identity as a categorical
variable at the nominal level of measurement (Lounsbury et al., 2005, p. 502). Secondly they
identified that in prior research GPA was not measured and evaluated on its impact on student s
sense of identity. There were four separate research questions identified in this investigation that
were the central focus. The first question looked to determine if a positive relationship existed
between GPA and sense of identity. The second question asked if the relationship between GPA
and sense of identity was the same for males and females. The third question looked at if the

Commercial Fishing In New England
Commercial fishing in New England is not sustainable. Commercial fishing is the catching of fish
for profit and, as with other profit making activities, there are trade offs between a pure capitalistic
market and the damage it does to resources. For commercial fishing, this trade off is that the more
fishthe fishermen catch, the more damage it does to the fish population. To make commercial fishing
sustainable, large regulations need to be in place, as Jack said. However, large regulations of a
free market are usually not accepted in America and would not be put in place in time to save the
fish and sustain commercial fishing.

The definition of Capitalism according to Merriam Webster is an economic system characterized
by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private
decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by
competition in a Free Market. This means that the free market, or in this case commercial fishing,
is not controlled by the government because that is the definition of capitalism. Having big
restrictions on fishing would be seen as a restriction of the free market. Although regulations are put
on the free market, the size of regulations needed to sustain fish population and save commercial
fishing would not be tolerated by many political parties. The regulations would never be put in
place. Unless America changes its capitalist view, the large regulations needed to sustain
commercial fishing will not happen.
The changes needed for sustainable fishing are too big and do not fit with America s view of the
economic system. Unfortunately, without these changes, the fish population will continue to
decline. So, you can see that sustainable fishing in new England is not possible. Although New
England and the US cannot have sustainable fishing because of their capitalistic values, as shown
throughout history their values may

The Bees Of Honey Bees Essay
led to a decrease in honey prices, increased beekeeping operating cost and attrition of pollination
services.
The other big problem affecting the bees is the impact of disease on bee populations. Like all other
animals, the population of honey bees has been impacted largely by diseases and human activities.
Bees are especially susceptible to the highly destructive Varroa mite. This small external parasite
that plagues honey bees was discovered in 1904. It attacks by attaching itself on the bees before
sucking their blood. The after effect of these attacks leaves the bees weaker, and may end up
killing the bees. Besides bees, other insect pollinators are also facing the same challenges faced by
bees. However, the bees stand out because they are the most important pollinator for most crop
species used by humans and animals.
Bee Keeping Guide
Beekeeping can be a side venture, a hobby or a profitable full time business so long as you have a
healthy stock of honey bees. Beekeeping is a relatively inexpensive undertaking; however, to
reap big in this venture, there are a couple of things you need to understand as a beekeeper. First,
you must recognize that you will be stung by the bee at one time or the other. In the worst case
scenario, a bee sting may cause a brief period of discomfort or anaphylactic shock. The most
common symptoms of a bee sting are swelling, itching, appearance of hives in the affected region
and shortness of breath, which is a serious cause for concern.

The Secret River, set in England and Australia, was written by Kate Grenville in 2006. William
Shakespeare s play Othello was written in 1603 and set in Venice. Kate Grenville and William
Shakespeare used compositional features to express both similar and different ideas of difference
and power. They have cohesive ideas of power such as the use of structure and symbolism to
convey power however, differ in their structure. They both expressed race through the context of the
novel, setting, narrative perspective and imagery. However, 17th century english conveyed the idea
of difference with greater subtlety than Kate Grenville s use of modern english . Similarly both
texts contain powerful characters, however, these characters are differently placed and different
compositional features were used to portray these ideas.
Kate Grenville and William Shakespeare expressed ideas of power through representation of objects

With a mix of worldbeat, post punk, art punk and funk, the Talking Heads were one of the most
famous bands to come out of the New York scene of the late 70s. With the awkward David Byrne
as frontman, they were also one of the unlikeliest bands to emerge out of CBGB. Formed in
1975, the groups first gig was opening for the Ramones at the infamous club. That same year,
the band was signed to Sire Records and began work on their debut, Talking Heads:77 on which
Psycho Killer was found and charted. In 1978, they teamed up with Brian Eno to record More
Songs About Buildings and Food, where they would find even more chart success with a cover
of Al Green s Take Me to the River. Eno s explorations continued on 1979s Fear of Music, which
housed the track Life During Wartime. In 1980, Eno took the band even further into uncharted
waters as he introduced them to afrobeat and world music. The result was Remain in Light on
which Once in a Lifetime was found. Once the Heads released four albums in four years, they
put out a live album and toured extensively. Back in the studio in 1983 the band recorded
Speaking in Tongues to critical and commercial praise. The single Burning Down the House
would prove to be the groups only top 10 hit in the states. Three more studio recordings would
follow, but in 1991 the band announced Talking Heads would be parting ways. While the band did
reunite in 1996 to complete an album, Byrne was burnt out and

How Did The Minoans Influence The Mycenaeans
The Aegean period brought about three significant culture civilizations; the Minoans, the
Mycenaeans, and then the Greeks (Matthews, Noble, Platt, 2014). It is evident the civilizations of
Greece learned (although made their own), from the Egyptian and Mesopotamian cultures, which
truly speaks to how we continue to learn and evolve from previous sets consistent culture of
advancement. The Minoans preceded the Mycenaeans who subsequently preceded the Greeks. The
key aspects of the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures that lived on among the later Greeks include
their writing, architecture, the arts and trades, and religion, to name a few.
The Minoans, a prosperous society, due to their domination in trade, formed on the Greek Island of
Crete around 2000 BC (Osborne, 2015). The Minoan civilization was named after King Minos, the
legendary king (Matthews, et al, 2014). The Minoan civilization was evidently not Greek, as the
writing Linear A, has still not been able to translated. However, this primitive writing led to the
development of Linear B by the Mycenaeans, which was later used in the Greek ... Show more

The Minoan civilizations gave art breath (Osborne, 2015). Their art, pottery, sculptures, frescos
beautifying the palace centers, jewelry influenced the Mycenaeans designs, which Greeks
improved upon. It is clear the economic pursuits lived through to the Greeks. Moreover, the
Minoans were polytheistic, though matriarchal (Matthews, et al, 2014). The Mycenanean religion
had ties to the nature gods, as well as some predecessors of Olympian gods and goddesses seen
later in the Greek culture (Mark, 2013). We can truly understand the evolution of civilization to
civilization, as we watch separate cultures and civilizations adapt portions of a previous existence
and then transform into something of their own. This incredible passing of the torch sort of speak,

Schizophrenia in The Center Cannot Hold by Elyn Saks
Introduction
This experience is much harder, and weirder, to describe than extreme fear or terror, most people
know what it is like to be seriously afraid. If they haven t felt it themselves, they ve at least seen
a movie, or read a book, or talked to a frightened friend they can at least imagine it. But
explaining what I ve come to call disorganization is a different challenge altogether.
Consciousness gradually loses its coherence, one s center gives away. The center cannot hold.
The me becomes a haze, and the solid center from which one experiences reality breaks up like a
bad radio signal. (Saks, p. 13) These words are the description of schizophrenia, written by a

symptom is disordered thinking and speech. Saks displayed symptoms of loose association,

Saks also displayed neologisms, heightened perceptions, hallucinations inappropriate affect,
disorganized motor disturbances, and psychomotor symptoms. Elyn also displayed cognitive
symptoms as well. Research has found that numerous individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia
might not show any symptoms and others, like Saks, can lead normal and productive lives. (Park

Transportation off site emissions are emissions that are generated from cradle to gate. The total
emissions index is used to assess each alternative where overall emissions are divided into direct
and indirect emissions. The direct emissions index, indirect emissions index, total emissions index
and global emission index can be calculated using equation 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Detailed
information on calculating direct and indirect emissions can be found elsewhere (Marzouk et al.,

Examples Of Figurative Language In Othello
Honest Iago, Right? The villain in Othello, Iago, fits the stereotype of manipulation and lies that
most commonly gets associated with fake people. He contradicts himself to make a character
view him in a specific way, which is necessary for Iago to fulfill his revenge on Othello. Iago
tricks Roderigo, a foolish Venetian, who loves Desdemona and would do anything to have another
chance at her heart. Iago s intentions can be discovered when looking deep into the meaning
behind his sarcasm, comparisons and emphasis. Iago uses sarcasm, figurative language, and
repetition to tell the reader what he really believes, while manipulating the characters in the play to
view him as he sees fit. Iago s use of sarcasm in his conversation with Roderigo... Show more

Iago repeats his idea in his conversation with Roderigo to let Roderigo know what he needs to do
to get Desdemona. Furthermore, it allows the reader to understand why Iago wants Roderigo s
help. The line Put money in thy purse (382), is repeated multiple times. Iago tells Roderigo that
Othello and Desdemona will never last, and when she is done with Othello she will need a new
man with money. Iago tells Roderigo to Go, provide thy money (414), which shows that they
will work together to inflict revenge on Othello and to get Desdemona for Roderigo. Iago s
constant reference to money proves that Iago does not have good intensions and even puts the
question, whether or not he is going to rip off Roderigo. This obsession of money brings more of
Iago s true self to the reader and raises questions about his loyalty to

Socrates and Civil Obecience or Disobedience
Essay: A Discussion on whether or not I believe that Socrates views in the Crito contradict his
views expressed in the Apology.
My position: I am in disagreement with this statement and my analysis, based on contextual
evidence, is as follows:
Although I could argue the question posited above from either position, as many have done before
and, as many will continue to do after me, I do not believe that Socrates waivers in his beliefs
between the two accounts according to Plato. The contradiction, it seems, focuses on whether or
not Socrates is a proponent of civil (dis)obedience, and the apparent conflict between the two
works revolves around passages from the Apology, that seem to be in opposition to his stated...

To further bolster his position, Socrates does not fail to point out to the jury that these other men
are applauded for doing such service to the city of Athens when he states, Each of these men can
go to any city and persuade the young, who can keep company with any one of their own fellow
citizens they want without paying.......pay them a fee, and be grateful to them besides (Apology
19e 20a). Since there does not seem to be a legal problem with them, and they have not been
accused of these crimes, Socrates should not even be standing trial on what is clearly trumped up
charges, and attempting to have a man executed unjustly (Apology 30d).
A
side from what seems to be Socrates overt contempt for the rulings of the courts, as stated in the
above mentioned examples, there are numerous other examples in the Apology defending my
belief that Socrates views, compliance of Athenian law, are consistent throughout both works in
question. In a passage located in (19a) of the Apology, Socrates not only refutes the charges
against him regarding his proported atheism but summarily solidifies his position as one who
clearly is concerned with obeying the law. In this passage he states, Even so, let the matter
proceed as the god may wish, but I must obey the law and make my defense. In yet another
example, Socrates describes a situation in the past where he served as a member of the council,
where his

Essay on The Develoment of the Horror Genre
The term Gothic is significant for the understanding of the origins and development of the horror
genre. Both of these genres differ, whilst Gothic literature is the text that explores the frightening
extremes in mankind, horror focuses more on the unknown. The Gothic horror genre has changed
over time and retains importance because it is the antecedent of the horror genre. Factors such as
the definition of the word Gothic, the archetypes of the genre, and its social and historical contexts,
have altered considerably as time progressed. The value and popularity given to the gothic horror
genre has also varied during the past few centuries. As a result, in order to understand the horror
genre s foundations, it is important to observe the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, it can be said that the Gothic genre was a form of escapism from the Enlightenment as
it portrayed extreme emotions and moods. The Gothic horror genre has been given different
responses and values from the time of its birth in 1764, with Horace Walpole s The Castle of
Otranto, to the present moment. The Castle of Otranto is considered the first Gothic novel, which
contains elements of suspense, violence and supernaturalism. As dominant paradigms and interests
change, so has the appreciation which is given to Gothic horror. The Gothic has been frequently
criticised for the sensationalism and implausibility created. Some believe that Melmoth the
Wanderer by Charles Maturin, which was published in 1820, was the last Classic Gothic novel.
Several literary critics have often been hesitant to accept the Gothic genre as valuable. It was only
the critics who were interested in its historical aspects and practices that were the first to appraise
the genre. However, the Gothic genre is celebrated today with canons being studied at educational
institutions. At present, elements of the Gothic still reverberate through horror books, films and so
on; thus it is essential to become aware of the origins of the Gothic horror genre in order to identify
the inspiration created and how the horror components were derived. Gothic themes still resonate in
modern literature through authors such as Anne Rice, who wrote tales of

What Is The Structure Of Araby
Araby Summary
This scholarly article named The Structure of Araby written by Jerome Mandel, and published by
Modern Language Studies in 1985 states that Araby, which was written by James Joyce is set up
as a medieval romance. The genre of medieval romance is what Araby is modeled off of Araby has
all of the common themes that are associated such as the aspects of a youth experiencing childhood,
lovers that are unable to be together because of social differences, and a quest to find themselves. In
the scholarly article, Mandel stated that at the beginning of the story, Araby, there were many ways
that James Joyce showed how the unnamed boy in the story was developing through his childhood
by showing some symbolic meaning such as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The completion of a successful quest that was given by Mangan s sister would have put him in

much he truly cares for her, and the extent that he will go to please her. While the boy was
willing to go to do anything for the girl The boy is doomed to failure the moment he says my
heart misgave me. (Mandel, paragraph 12). The boy has to overcome many obstacles on the
way to trying to complete his quest such as his family not having much extra many to give, his
uncle that forgets that he wanted to go to the bazaar. The boy in Araby does not show the
characteristics of a knight, the boy was expected to overcome obstacles that would prevent him
from going to the bazaar and buying his lover something, and complete the quest. Joyce mentions
the successful and the unsuccessful quest, while the boy is unsuccessful in his quest, and he fails
to get the girl anything, but this failure made him realize who he is as a person. He was once
driven by vanity, and his love for the girl, the story was most likely written from the narrator s
perspective of him in the future looking back at his adolescence. The narrator finds that when he
was a child, he found that there were correlations between his childhood and a medieval romance,
which showed him how he fell victim to the way of the

  • 3. Deng Xiaoping s Massive Reform Set China on a... He was the Napoleon of China. At just four feet eleven inches tall. Deng Xiaoping set China on a sky rocketing course. When Deng Xiaoping took control of China in 1978 the economy was in a backwards state , also in the early 1980s more than 80% of China was in poverty, but two decades later after the massive reforms of Deng Xiaoping, the poverty level drastically decreased. This incredible task could have only been done though the outstanding leadership and policies of people like Deng Xiaoping. Deng Xiaoping was a revolutionary and truly paramount leader, who recreated the Chinese economy for rapid modernization; adopted ideas capitalism bringing millions of Chinese citizens out of poverty, and instigating rapid economic growth; and he... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1978 when Deng came into official power China had greatly suffered economically. This was the result of the orthodox socialist and communist policies implemented largely during the Cultural Revolution. China s economic growth in the 1960s and 1970s was very slow, almost stagnant (World Bank), this lead to the expected result of being left in the dust by many countries in Asia, such as Japan. Also in 1978 the population of China living in a rural situation was at least 76.3% (Reuters) of the total Chinese population, equivalent to around 743,463,800 people living in China. However when Deng took over and put his economic policies in place, which included, but were not limited to: opening China to foreign trade. His other economic policies eased the government control over economics and it resulted in a large boost of economic growth, this economic growth extended even past the time he resigned in the 1990s. For instance the GDP (Gross Domestic Product, a determiner of the quality of life) per capita in 1978 was 154.07 billion U.S dollars (World Bank), just 30 years later the Chinese GDP per capita in 2008 skyrocketed to 3,170 billion U.S dollars (World Bank). This increase from 154.07 billion U.S dollars to 3,170 billion U.S dollars represents an approximate whopping 20.57% increase in its GDP in only 30 years after Deng implemented his reforms and ... • 4. The Three Causes And Effects Of Genocide In Rwanda . Genocide is the deliberate killing of a group of people of the same race, religion or ethnicity. This word is derived from a combination of a Greek word genos ( race or tribe ) and a Latin word cide ( killing ). In 1994, in the beginning of April, the same has happened in Rwanda. A genocide. One group of people who were called Hutus inhumanely killed Tutsis, and in only 100 days approximately 800000 people were slaughtered (Stapleton 25). Before the colonial period in Rwanda, there were three classifications of people. Hutus, who made up the majority of the population 84%, Tutsi who were only 17% and Twa who only made up 1%. Hutus were from less privileged families and were cultivators, Tutsis were cattle herders and from rich families, and Twa were potters and were outshined by the other groups (Stapleton 28). However, these classifications were based on the number of cattle people owned. People who owned 10 cows or more were considered Tutsi and people with less than 10 cows were considered Hutu. People could shift from being a Hutu to a Tutsi or vice versa depending on the number of cattle they had. Before colonization Tutsis and Hutus lived peacefully (Warren 19). After losing in World War I, Germany lost all its colonies in Africa, Ruanda which was also one of Germany colonies, and was given to Belgians. In 1916, Belgians took control (Kinzer 24). They found the country politically stable and organized such that they couldn t impose their own rules. For them to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. What{s Catatonic Schizophrenia Catatonic Schizophrenia is a specific type of schizophrenia, or brain malfunction, which is distinguished by extreme, yet direct opposite behaviors. Its symptoms focus on movement and motor skills. You might be more familiar with the catatonic stupor , where the individual is incapable of movement, speech or response to external stimuli. Oppositely, catatonic schizophrenia manifests as voluntary bizarre movements, repetitive nonsensical words and/or sounds. Basically, an individual gets stuck either in a trance like state or in a hyper excited state. Both types are serious, but treatable. To receive a diagnosis of catatonic schizophrenia, an individual must first be diagnosed with schizophrenia. Once all the symptoms are evaluated, it will become obvious whether or not they qualify for the specific catatonic diagnosis. What are Symptoms Specific to Catatonic Schizophrenia? Malfunctioning Motor Skills Incapable of body movement. Mutism. Body clenched in a stiff position. No awareness of environment. I never keep an open mind when it comes to thinking because over the years I felt that my way or decision making would be the right one without the input of others. I have learned the hard way that listening to others turned out to be a good thing because their insight on things would make others make a better decision for themselves or even myself. Open mindedness is characterized by being receptive to other views and having the willingness to change views with new facts and evidence. Open mindedness increases intellectual capabilities by allowing for new experiences and perspectives. A narrow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is arguably the world s most important privately controlled economic institution. It all began in his late 20s, having no background knowledge in retailing at all, as he opened up his very first variety store entitled Walton s Five and Dime. It was right then and there that Walton began to offer low prices compared to the other businesses in the local area. His idea of offering low prices surprisingly worked and he soon found himself venturing out and purchasing 15 variety stores all located around the central area by 1960. Everyone in town thought Sam was nuts for taking such a serious risk on drastically cutting back prices, but Sam never felt the least bit worried about his strategy. In 1962, the first Wal Mart opened its doors, along with two other well known discounting chains, K Mart and Woolco. Sam stood his ground and before he knew it 18 Wal Marts were officially up and operating smoothly and successfully in two states. The rest is simply history. Wal Mart s Corporate Culture Every successful business or company must have developed a strong corporate culture in order to be successful in what they do. In Wal Mart s case, profit is the goal, but service is the process ( Corporate Culture 20). Fibres are thin, hair like structures (Blair, n.d: online) that are categorized into two types: long filament fibres and short staple fibres. Natural fibres are usually staple, whilst man made fibres are filament, with the exception of silkthat comes from a natural source. These raw fibres are spun to produce a long, continuous thread referred to as yarn, which is then used in a series of methods that include, stitching, knitting and weaving in order to produce a fabric. The content, construction and finish of a fabric can determine it s aesthetic and functional qualities. This essay will explore the classifications and characteristics of fibres, yarns and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Its desirability and expensive price has prompted cheaper man made imitations. (Udale, 2008)(IYNF, 2009) Man made fibres account for 68% of fibres used worldwide (CRFS, 2010: online). In the textile industry, man made fibres are categorized into two main types: cellulosic polymers and non cellulosic polymers. Cellulosic polymers are derived from the cellulose extracted from natural sources, such as plants and trees. The cellulose is then chemically treated to produce fibres such as rayon, acetate and triacetate. Non cellulosic polymers are those that are produced synthetically from different chemical compounds in order to produce fibres such as nylon, polyester and acrylic. (Udale, 2008) Often referred to as artificial silk because of its silk like aesthetic, rayon was one of the first man made fabrics to be developed having been in production since 1885 (Udale, 2008). Constructed from the cellulose of wood pulp, it was made to simulate natural fibres as well as to provide characteristics of its own (Corbman, 1983: p.9). Like cotton, it is soft, comfortable and versatile; it blends well with other fibres, and is often used for evening gowns as an alternative to silk because of its good drape. It is also a highly absorbent material that can be dyed easily. The durability of rayon is fairly low, it is easily damaged through abrasion and can shrink when washed, prompting dry clean aftercare instructions. (Swicol, 2010). Acetate is silk like ... The Effects Of Private Participation On Infrastructure This paper examines the effects of private participation in infrastructure (PPI) in the developing world on the provision of infrastructure services. This process is colloquially referred to as privatization and involves the transfer of previously state owned and operated infrastructure assets to operation and sometimes ownership by the private sector. Analysis of more than two decades worth of evidence showed that, in terms of the impact on infrastructureprovision, PPI tends to provide positive gains in efficiency, quality of and access to infrastructure services. With regard to realizing the benefits of privatization, effective regulation and the introduction of competition are crucial. Notably, positive impacts from PPI are not seen... On the other hand I was familiar with the arguments of the proponents of privatization, who argue that private companies are better positioned than the government to provide most services in an efficient manner. In the face of this debate I wanted to explore the evidence in an attempt to reach some fact based conclusions about the impact of the privatization of infrastructure service on their delivery. 3.The Research Process Thankfully PPI in the developing world has been ongoing for over two decades at this point, so there is a substantial body of academic literature on the impact of infrastructure privatization for specific cases and for each infrastructure sector. Research for this paper was mainly conducted through Georgetown Library resources and Google Scholar. Case studies for infrastructure privatization projects are a plenty and I had to sift through them to identify more comprehensive reports that looked at a set of case studies or a specific sector. Most comprehensive reports on infrastructure privatization in the developing world date from the early 2000s, though I was able to find two recent comprehensive assessments of the evidence that provided me fresh overviews of the current knowledge base and leads for further sources. 4.Introduction Across the developing world, private participation in infrastructure accounts for less than 20% of infrastructure ... • 12. The Challenges In Sports And The Socialization Of Sports... In North America, sports are an important for socialization. The definition of socialization from the book Sports in Society by Jay Coakley is a process of learning and social development, which occurs as we interact with one another and become familiar with the social worlds. Sports is an easy way for socializationbut it is also other thing that can do the same as sports. I believe that sports is important for socialization from my own experience but it is not necessary for everyone. Sports are essential in American Society. It s practically everywhere in people s lives. If everyone was asked about what their favorite sport is, they could answer quickly. Sports is a microcosm in the U.S. It makes up a big portion of American culture. Some people have been in sports as a young kid by the parents so their kids can learn how to socialize. Kids learn how to be normal with coaches, officials, parents, and other children. The question is, should we put our kids in sports to socialize? I say yes, but the behavior of the child should be monitored. If the child is not doing well, then he/she should be taken out and put in something else. From my experience, I played football at the age of 7. I can t remember too many things about me socializing too much. I feel like I was a loner with others but at home I was comfortable and social. • 13. Science vs. Nature as a Means of Obtaining Perfection in... Although we may mask our insecurities with false confidence and bravado, deep down most people crave perfection. As the majority of us learn as we age, this idea of perfection is unobtainable. The older we get, the more we tend to accept the flaws and imperfections that make us individuals. However, there are others who never learn the hard lesson of acceptance. Instead they spend ridiculous amounts of money on surgeries, creams and concoctions in order to rid themselves of these marks and insecurities. It s a constant battle, a fork in the road if you may, between science and nature. On one side there s the high road of nature and acceptance, and on the other there s the scientific shortcut that, in reality, just continues to mask the original problem. The Birthmark leads us to believe that this is perhaps a topic Hawthorne struggled with himself. Hawthorne clearly displays his decided distaste for science and its unnatural ways in his short story, The Birthmark. Aylmer, the main character of the story, is a brilliant scientist/alchemist. He possesses a belief in man s ultimate control over nature , and thinks there is nothing man can t overcome (Harun). His obsession with his wife Georgiana s small birth mark, which resembles a hand, begins after they re married. In Frankenstein, women in the text are being destructed through an inevitable miserable fate to get the idea of the passive woman that devotes herself to the benefactor and her lack of agency across, in which is demonstrated in the passivity of Caroline, Elizabeth and Justine s role that leads to their misery. The first victim in Shelley s novel, Caroline, faces extreme destitution in the beginning of her life in which her situation is mediated by a benefactor, Alphonse Frankenstein; the passivity of Caroline s role is characterized by the absence of agency in the choices that she makes and a death that is unjust but unavoidable that she has no power of rewinding. At the beginning of the novel, we come to know Caroline as destituted and orphaned when Alphonse Frankenstein finds Caroline mourning over the death of her father Beaufort. However, Caroline s hardship terminates when she is rescued by Alphonse when Alphonse came like a protecting spirit to the poor girl, who committed herself to his care (Shelley, p.19) and in which after two years after this event, Caroline became his wife (Shelley, p.19). Protest For The National Anthem Of The United States Emily Petrochuk Professor Psenicka English 102 31 October 2016 Protests to the National Anthem of the United States A famous sports figure in history once said, I cannot stand and sing the anthem. I cannot salute the flag. I know that I am a black man in a white world (McKirdy). At first glance, this quote seems to be something that would have been said by the San Francisco 49ers Quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, in light of his recent protests, as well as other sports players who decided to follow suit, to the playing of the national anthem before football games. However, this is not the case. The above quote was written in the 1972 autobiography, I Never Had it Made, written by Jackie Robinson, an African American Baseball player (McKirdy). Colin Kaepernick obviously felt the same as Jackie Robinson did when he sat on the bench rather than standing during a rendition of the national anthem before a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on August 26. During an interview with the media following the game, Kaepernick explained why he refused to stand for the anthem, I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder (Wyche). • 18. Measure Growth During American War History And Musicality... Chapter Four: Data Analysis and Findings The purpose of the study was to measure growth in American war history and musicality while learning repertoire from various war periods, identifying the major wars of the United States with dates, and describing the origins of Veteran s Day. Ten different sub questions and research instruments were used to measure growth during the process of preparing for the Veterans Day Concert. Each instrument was inserted into Google Forms and delivered to each student via Google Classroom. Pre Tests were given to students during the third week of school. Post tests were given to students two weeks prior to the final performance. Scores may have been effected by possible guessing or misspelled words in the students written responses. The data is reflective of the hypothesis in the fact that sixth grade students scored low and eighth grade students scored higher on the pretests. However, on certain pretests, the seventh grade students actually scored higher than some eighth grade students. Data Analysis Question 1: Can students demonstrate music growth through naming letter names of notes written on the staff with treble and bass clefs from F2 to G5? The research instrument entitled Grand Staff required students to generate letter names of notes placed on the staff with treble and bass clefs. • 26. The Effects Of Beauty Standards On Body Image The Effects of Beauty Standards Understanding the effects of beauty standards to both men and women requires research of both sexes and different orientations in regard to the influence the media has on them. While cultural standards contribute to beauty standards, media carries most of the responsibility for swaying public opinion of attractiveness. In order to find an answer as to why certain beauty standards currently exist, one must examine the root cause: media. Literature Reviewed First Group of Studies Media and Body Image. In order to prevent continued negative effects on body image by the media, it has been suggested that images that have been changed need to have labels to prevent body dissatisfaction (Slater et al., 2012). Wang et al. (2010) provided evidence that both men and women attempt to appear like the people portrayed in magazines. Men were influenced by health and sports magazines, whereas women attempted to look like the models in entertainment and fashion magazines (Wang, 2010). Participants in the Slater et al. (2012) study showed that warning labels may help prevent the negative effects of media images, as they portray an unrealistic ideal for the human body (Slater et al., 2012; Wang, 2010). Second Groups of Studies Body Dissatisfaction. Some people were born good heart and they just love to be around other people, consoling them and giving them advice for how to succeed in life. As the words of Nancy Taylor explains, By analyzing Dionysian Apollonian aspects, we gain insight into who we are and how we behave in this world. To begin with, we must first understand the gods from which these two terms. Apollonism is based around the god Apollo. Apollo is the god of many things, such medicine and the lyre. He is the god of healing and of all things beautiful. Apollo is the god of the truth, wisdom and rational thought. When you think of rationality and the ways that things should be logically done, you are thinking in an Apollonistic way. When Apollo is depicted in sculpture, he is nude, displaying his clean cut body that shows no trace of facial hair. The clean definition of his muscles should give on an idea of his rational and logical personality. He is the predictable side of people, the side that tends to do what is normally expected from someone on account of the current culture. The second type of personality would be based on the god Dionysus. According to Steven Kreis, The Dionysian, which corresponds roughly to Schopenhauer s conception of Will, is directly opposed to the Apollonian. Here we have, in a great symbol of art, both the fair world of Apollo and its substratum, the terrible wisdom of Silenus, and we can comprehend intuitively how they mutually require one another. Therefore, one could easily assume some of the characteristics that Dionysus will have. Dionysus is the god of wine, which is a source of intoxication that helps to sooth the mind. The chariot of Dionysus is bedecked with flowers and garlands; panthers and tigers stride beneath his yoke. He is the god of revelry which is to say, demonic behavior. The other big problem affecting the bees is the impact of disease on bee populations. Like all other animals, the population of honey bees has been impacted largely by diseases and human activities. Bees are especially susceptible to the highly destructive Varroa mite. This small external parasite that plagues honey bees was discovered in 1904. It attacks by attaching itself on the bees before sucking their blood. The after effect of these attacks leaves the bees weaker, and may end up killing the bees. Besides bees, other insect pollinators are also facing the same challenges faced by bees. Eventually girls will begin to agree and give up things that they love to do, or just not try something new, because it s not stereotypical. This is what can happen in a co ed environment. In a single gender environment, students learn to love themselves, and learn to be who they are. That is why single gender schools, don t promote as much gender stereotyping as co ed schools do, and are a better learning environment for students. To conclude, students learn better in single gender schools. This is because it is easier for students to concentrate, this makes it less complicated for students to learn. Another reason is because boys and girls are academically different, so in a single gender environment, teachers can focus on how that specific gender learns. Lastly, students feel less pressured in single gender environments. This is because they feel less pressured on how they appear to others and learn how to love themselves for who they are. With the awkward David Byrne as frontman, they were also one of the unlikeliest bands to emerge out of CBGB. Formed in 1975, the groups first gig was opening for the Ramones at the infamous club. That same year, the band was signed to Sire Records and began work on their debut, Talking Heads:77 on which Psycho Killer was found and charted. In 1978, they teamed up with Brian Eno to record More Songs About Buildings and Food, where they would find even more chart success with a cover of Al Green s Take Me to the River. Eno s explorations continued on 1979s Fear of Music, which housed the track Life During Wartime. In 1980, Eno took the band even further into uncharted waters as he introduced them to afrobeat and world music. The result was Remain in Light on which Once in a Lifetime was found. Once the Heads released four albums in four years, they put out a live album and toured extensively. It is evident the civilizations of Greece learned (although made their own), from the Egyptian and Mesopotamian cultures, which truly speaks to how we continue to learn and evolve from previous sets consistent culture of advancement. The Minoans preceded the Mycenaeans who subsequently preceded the Greeks. The key aspects of the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures that lived on among the later Greeks include their writing, architecture, the arts and trades, and religion, to name a few. The Minoans, a prosperous society, due to their domination in trade, formed on the Greek Island of Crete around 2000 BC (Osborne, 2015). Since there does not seem to be a legal problem with them, and they have not been accused of these crimes, Socrates should not even be standing trial on what is clearly trumped up charges, and attempting to have a man executed unjustly (Apology 30d). The Gothic horror genre has been given different responses and values from the time of its birth in 1764, with Horace Walpole s The Castle of Otranto, to the present moment. The Castle of Otranto is considered the first Gothic novel, which contains elements of suspense, violence and supernaturalism. As dominant paradigms and interests change, so has the appreciation which is given to Gothic horror. The Gothic has been frequently criticised for the sensationalism and implausibility created. Some believe that Melmoth the Wanderer by Charles Maturin, which was published in 1820, was the last Classic Gothic novel. Several literary critics have often been hesitant to accept the Gothic genre as valuable. It was only the critics who were interested in its historical aspects and practices that were the first to appraise the genre.
