Spirometer- Introduction
and Maintenance
Spirometry
• Spirometry is derived from the Latin words
SPIRO (to breathe) and METER(to measure)
• Spirometry, which means “the measuring of
breath,” is a routinely used pulmonary
function test (PFT) that measures the amount
and speed of air that a person can inhale and
exhale. Results from the test can be used to
estimate lung function and aid in the diagnosis
of certain respiratory disorders.

Basics of Respiration
The respiratory tract consists of the trachea, lungs, bronchi, bronchioles, and The
alveoli constitute both the functional unit of the lung and the site of cellular
respiration
Types of spirometers
• Bellows spirometers-measure volume ,mainly
in lungs function unit.
• Electronic Desk top spirometer – Measure
flow and volume with real time display .
• Small hand-held spirometers – Inexpensive
and quick to use but not print
Spirometry –Possible side effects
• Feeling light-headed
• Headache
• Facial redness
• Fainting : Reduced venous return or vasovagal
attack (reflax)s
Two important parameters
• PVC- Forced vital capacity, this is the total
amount of air that you blow out in the breath.
• FEV1 – Forced Expiratory volume in one
second , This is the amount of air you can
blow out within one second .with the normal
lungs and airways you can normally blow out
most of the air from your lungs within one
second.
User Maintenance Check List
DAILY
Cleaning the spirometer must be cleaned and disinfected internally at the
Start of Stand, Weekly, and End of Stand
Hoses Cleaning Clean the hoses , any hoses that have a leak will be thrown away
3.Hoses and hose
adapters
 Used during a day will be changed daily. Used hoses and
adapters will be stored in a plastic bag and placed in the belly
compartment.
Troubleshooting
Symptoms Possible Cause Solution
The System does not
operate when switch
on
The LCD Display
back-light doesn't
work
Not connect ac/dc
adapter
Turn-off the
instrument, connect
the AC/DC adapter &
Recharge battery
completely
Check the connection Check the power
supply about 5
otherwise replace the
displace
