SPECIAL SENSES: THE
EYE
Created by: Michele Leonard
The Study of the Eye
Ophthalmology is the study of the eye
Procedures include:
 Color Vision Test
 Fluorescein Angiography
 Fluorescein Staining
 Visual Acuity Test
 Biepharectomy
 Enucleation
Structures of the Eye
 The eyeball
 Muscles of the Eye
 The Eyelids
 Conjunctiva
 Lacrimal Apparatus
The Eyeball
The eyeball is composed of three layers:
The Sclera, Choroid, and Retina
 The Sclera which is the outer white layer
including the cornea which retracts light rays
 The Choroid is the middle layer of the eyeball
consisting of: iris, pupil and ciliary
 The Retina is the inner most layer of eyeball
containing sensor receptor cells
The Muscles in the Eye
 Six muscles that connect the eyeball to skull,
they are four rectus and two oblique muscles
 Rectus muscles are straight puling the eye up
and down side to side.
 The oblique muscles are on an angle and
assist with diagonal eye movement.
Eye Anatomy
Eyelids
 Eyelids provides protection from foreign
particles and injury
 The eyelids consist of eyelashes and
sebaceous glands that secrete lubricating oil
onto the eyeball
Eyelid Anatomy
Conjunctiva
 The conjunctiva is the eye mucous membrane
and serves as protection for the eye by sealing
off the eyeball in the socket.
Lacrimal Apparatus
 The lacrimal gland is located in the outer
upper corner of each eyelid.
 Tears
 Lacrimal ducts
 Nasolacrimal duct
