Somatic hybridization is a technique that allows manipulation of plant genomes through protoplast fusion. It is used to overcome crossing barriers and transfer genes between species. The process involves fusing protoplasts, selecting hybrid cells, identifying hybrids, and regenerating hybrid plants. It has been applied to many crop families, including Brassicaceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae, Solanaceae, and Citrus. Somatic hybridization provides genetic variation and disease resistance, but hybrid plants are not always fertile and genetic instability can occur. In Pakistan, research has focused on somatic hybridization in sugarcane.
