   • Control: Lower risk and errors
IBM PureSystems “patterns of expertise”

 Captures:
    • IBM’s decades of experience in helping clients design, build and
      deploy new business applications

 What is it?
    • Codified best practices for presetting configuration options by type of selected
Web application (e.g., high availability, high security, etc.)

 What do you do?
    • Bring your data and application code, select the type of application you
want and everything else is handled for you in the background

What do you NOT have to do?
    • Understand the interdependencies and connections between your database, application
server, management, security, and the rest of the middleware
    • Manually engage in the real-time management of your infrastructure

Result: Speed deployment of Web applications!

Editor's Notes

  • #3 Is #3 what we want to call the “how to sell/competitive advantage, etc”
  • #4 Should we simplify more Main Point: The reality today is that IT is significantly constrained by the traditional computing model where the time, effort and money across the IT lifecycle is too high to meet business needs. Speaker Notes: But think about the barriers in our way today. Business wants to grow and to do that they have goals they need to achieve – within the context of the new landscape we ’ve talked about. Yet IT is constrained traditional computing models. How can we continue to spend the time, effort and dollars on the things on the right when we have to meet today ’s need? Getting Up & Running Specify/Design: Takes 30 days for an IT infrastructure system Procure: Software & hardware ordered separately taking 5-20 days Integrate: Components arrive as “bag of parts” – requiring optimization Deploy: Can take weeks to months Development Operations Provision: Takes 30-60 days for a development or test environment Configure: Modified and non-standard Dev/Test/Production configurations cause errors and delay production deployments by weeks Ongoing Effort Customize/Tune: Meeting SLAs requires customization and ongoing tuning Scale: Lack of dynamic elasticity results in cumbersome re-allocation of resources Manage: Managing and monitoring with multiple tools is time consuming Maintain: Separate fixes require separate testing Upgrade: Months to plan, procure and test; days of downtime
  • #5 New subject line? Main Point: Efficient data centers use advanced technology Speaker Notes: Our global technology services group funded some additional primary research into the effectiveness of IT datacenters and discovered some interesting differences between the least and most efficient ones. As you can see on the left, the least efficient data centers were slow to adopt technology and make limited use of things like moving virtual machines, storage virtualization and tiered storage. On the right, you see that the most efficient datacenters are markedly different. They are heavy early adopters of technology and the items I just mentioned. What ’s that mean to the business? As you can see on the left, least efficient datacenters have to spent about 2/3 of their IT budgets simply “keeping the lights on” – maintaining their existing infrastructure and can only dedicate about a third to new innovation. On the right you can see the dramatic difference from the most efficient data centers who can apply over half of the their IT budgets to new innovation. The question is how can we make the shift to use of these and other significant technology capabilities easier? BACKGROUND DETAIL: Source: 2012 IBM Data Center Study: www.ibm.com/data-center/study ( http://www.ibm.com/data-center/study ) Data Source: IBM Data Center Study Conducted January 2012 Study conducted in seven countries worldwide – U.S., Canada, Brazil, Germany, France, China, India 65 questions 308 Respondents in the study: IT managers and CIO respondents IBM Report, IDC conducted research and helped write Study measured data center efficiency across the data center – including operations, facilities, server, storage, networking, applications and tool, governance, staffing Analyzed data to determine stages of data center efficiency Study Findings What we found is that one in five, or 21% or about 1 in 5 of the total respondents are operating at the Most Efficient level The Most Efficient data centers, are currently allocating about 53 percent of their total IT budget on new projects Least Efficient data centers are allocating much less to new projects that can help innovation – only 35% of IT budget on new projects Let ’s look at some of the attributes that differentiate between the Most Efficient and the Least Efficient The Most Efficient Data Centers Early and fast adoption of new technology – 86% describe themselves as first or early adopters of new technology vs. 43% for Least Efficient data centers 58 percent use automation tools to move VMs automatically based on service level agreements (SLAs), without the need of manual intervention—versus 1 percent for Least Efficient data centers 93 percent of Most Efficient data centers use virtualized storage, versus 21 percent for Least Efficient data centers 87 percent use a services catalog approach for storage, leading to cost-effective storage placement, versus only 3 percent for Least Efficient data centers Definition of Storage Services Catalog: storage services catalog enables more efficient storage allocation and governance

  • #10 ED Notes: how IBM PureSystems is unique
  • #11 Main Point: IBM ’s secret sauce for the built-in expertise of PureSystems are the patterns of expertise learned from decades of client and partner engagements that are captured, tested and refined in the development lab and fully built-in to the system. Speaker Notes: IBM uniquely builds in expertise with patterns of expertise. What are patterns of expertise? They are proven best practices and expertise for complex tasks learned from decades of client and partner engagements that are captured, lab tested and optimized and then built into the system. This isn ’t just a blueprint or set of instructions to help you – the expertise is built and executable already. Why is that important? Agility: Faster time-to-value – taking out the manual steps and automating delivery. Efficiency: Reduced costs and resources – growing the list of things you do NOT have to do anymore Simplicity: Simpler skills requirements – reducing the amount of in house expertise you need Control: Lower risk and errors – implemented in a repeatable, optimized fashion that significantly lowers the risk of human error.

  • #15 ED NOTES: Need a visualization here. What feature on demand is – how you can buy hardware without needing super high capacity switches. Pay for what you need exactly today without rip and replace and be ready for tomorrow. Although you pay for what you need today, you have the ability and only pay for it when you need it. You get high capacity stuff and only pay for low capacity…a simple license upgrade will give you all the capabilities you need
  • #21 ED NOTES: need this chart to look more ‘softchoice’ Now, what does all this mean for our clients? What can they get out of these systems? Let ’s look at this in terms of four projected client initiatives where we think our PureFlex expert integrated systems would make a real difference. What we’ve done here is taken everything we’ve learned about the PureFlex system through our development, and we’ve used Alinean modeling to project the cost of ownership savings and new value clients can realize. In other words, this compares what actual clients have now vs. what they would get with IBM PureFlex. First, let ’s consider a managed services provider supporting midmarket companies that wants to consolidate a broadly mixed environment to lower operational expense and improve service levels for their clients. If they were to consolidate 30 Unix servers, more than 200 x86 servers and 22 storage systems onto one IBM PureFlex System with integrated compute, storage, networking and management, they would see $2.6 million less cost in ongoing systems and operational expenses, which represents a savings of 71%, and an additional 53% in management savings for $2 million, over 3 years. Second, let ’s consider a manufacturing company that optimizes its existing ERP environment by moving from HP UNIX and EMC storage to IBM PureFlex. Let’s say they replaced 18 HP-UX servers and a wide variety of storage systems, including EMC and HP, with IBM PureFlex System. Because of PureFlex’s higher utilization and optimized landscape that enables non-disruptive data migration, they could achieve a reduction in cores for software licensing yielding savings of over $3.8 million, or 78%, over 3 years. And they would realize a payback on their PureFlex system in just 9 months. Third, let ’s consider a major bank that wants to deploy new services significantly faster to gain competitive advantage. This bank’s current deployment of new services can range from 7-12 days to 3-6 months using traditional IT processes. But by using the PureFlex System’s highly automated, optimized service deployment models, they can reduce that time to 1 day or less to deploy new services…accelerating their time to realize new revenues. Fourth, let ’s consider a retailer that wants to accelerate a private cloud for its regional store operations to increase capability and simplify IT. If you look at a single IBM PureFlex System with its pre-integrated virtualization and cloud vs. a selection of individual components that require integration, setup, configuration, tuning, and expert understanding of interdependencies…this retailer would experience close to $1 million in management cost savings, or 56%, and an overall difference of $2.8M, which is that PureFlex is 54% lower total IT costs, over 3 years So you can see from these realistic examples that PureFlex can make a meaningful difference in reducing cost and increasing value across a variety of industries and a variety of client needs.
