This document discusses different positions on whether sociologists can study society objectively or if their values influence their research. It outlines three main positions: (1) value freedom is possible (positivism), (2) value freedom is not possible (interpretivism), and (3) sociology cannot and should not be value free. Under interpretivism, values guide research topic choice, data collection, interpretation, and assessing research effects. Other perspectives discussed are that sociologists should advocate for the underdog (Becker) or challenge powerful groups (Gouldner, feminism). In conclusion, interpretivism argues values influence interpretation, while positivism believes objective observation of social facts is possible.
