Quantitative methods: gather data which can be measured e.g. in numerical form as statistics, percentages etc.Official statistics: statistics published by the government, from research funded and carried out by the government.ExperimentsStrengths…fast to analyse data; preferred by positivists; methodology is easily replicable to check reliability of results.Strengths…as they’re well funded and are usually nation-wide, data tends to representative of the population which also makes it generalizable to a certain extent.Strengths…Weaknesses…not wanted by interpretivists; do not give researcher a good understanding of the situation’s context; limited outcomes e.g. for closed questions.Weaknesses...as the research is government funded, the methodology and write up of results may not be entirely objective.Weaknesses…Qualitative methods: gather data which is rich in detail, descriptive, and is difficult to measure. Non-numeric information e.g. audio, video, text, conversation etc.DocumentsObservations (participant and non-participant): to watch and take note of what happens, by either participating or watching as a non-participant, from the outside looking in and not taking part of activities.Strengths…good for interpretivists; gives rich detailed data; gives context for behaviour that may not have been previously understood by the researcher.Strengths…Strengths…participant observation greatly helps a researcher to understand the subcultures of the people being researched, by being immersed in it themself.Weaknesses…not wanted by positivists; time consuming to analyse. The data given by the respondent may go off topic.Weaknesses…Weaknesses…participant observation is usually covert, which is an ethical issue, and the people being researched may after debriefing decide to withdraw their data completely rendering the entire research wasted. There’s also a risk of going native, the researcher losing objectivity. However, non participant observation may cause demand characteristics in the people being researched. Both quantitative and qualitative: see above.Questionnaires: a written list of set questions.Interviews: a conversation between two people in which one questions the other to obtain information from them.Strengths…Occasionally the two can be combined e.g. with content analysis, descriptive information can be given a numerical value and then be measured, thus reaping the benefits of both approaches.Strengths…closed questionnaires are much faster to do than interviews, as well as analyse; can be given to large numbers of people all at once.Strengths…can give very rich qualitative data. If a good rapport is built then interviewee may disclose a greater deal of personal/honest information, aiding research further.Weaknesses…gathering data for yourself is much more time consuming to carry out as well as analyse because it’s primary data – it would be easier to simply use secondary data e.g. official statistics.Weaknesses…participants may misunderstand the questions, answer with something irrelevant or even skip questions; not everyone returns all of the questionnaires either.Weaknesses…prone to researcher bias; social desirability may affect answers so they are not completely honest; necessary to build rapport with researcher and not all researchers have social skills as would be needed for this; time consuming to analyse.<br />
