Puerto Rico is an island that is impacted by not having enough land for cultivation. The Three
thousand four hundred and ninety two square miles of this island is about seventy five percent hills
or mountains (Worldmark Encyclopedia of the States b). With the large amount of land consisting
of hill or mountains, Puerto Rico has limited amounts of natural resources. While under Spanish
colonial rule, the island was largely neglected because of its limited mineral resources. Following
the Spanish American war in 1898, the U.S. took over control of the island. The U.S. found itself
in control of an island that produced small scale amounts of sugar and coffee. The U.S would then
expand the sugarcane operations and establish markets to use as a viable trade resource.

are at a higher risk of worse prognoses than those without comorbidity. Therefore, identification of
etiologic factors for depression could lead to early interventions to prevent depression and
associated negative health outcomes.
Like other chronic diseases, depression has a complex etiology. Taken individually, etiologic
factors may appear to be trivial, but each is crucial to understanding the whole picture of
depression. From my medical training in China to current my MPH study, I have sought to put
together the pieces of the etiologic puzzle of depression. Although I have studied everything from
social to psychopathological factors contributing to the development of depression, I have recently
realized that the missing piece in my study is closer to the essence of human beings: genomics.

relations theory often used to both describe and predict trends and characteristics of the global
political landscape. The new liberal institutionalist school of international relations theory owes it
roots to the functional integration study of the 1950 s and 1960 s, and the complex
interdependence scholarship of the 1970 s and 1980 s (Lamy p.132). As part of the larger umbrella
of liberal approaches, neoliberal institutionalism holds a typically positive view of humanity and
