Ethics and IA: A Scenario Creation Tool for Ethical DesignStacy Surla
How can we know if we're designing ethically? What unintended consequences could result from our decisions? What can we do to maximize good and minimize harm in digital product design?
These urgent questions were addressed over 4 days at the Academics and Practioners Roundtable at the 2018 IA Summit. One result was the development of a prototype for guiding teams in incorporating ethical design into their products. Stacy Surla walks through the tool and test its usefulness in an interactive session at the September UXDC meetup.
Open source ecosystem is very specific. In the same market we meet companies, end-users, professionals customers, editor, IT service providers and community with non-profit organization. These actors interact and create value.
Our research studies interaction between these actors and the impact on service value chain. Through an interaction model, Actor-network theory, and value chain of IT service, we interviewed 50 professionals (editor, IT service providers, CIO and community) with qualitative approach.
We will present for the first time the results of this research. This presentation will be oriented with a managerial approach:
- CIO: Do you have to choose an editor ? An IT service provider ?
- IT service provider: Community are better than Editor ? Where is the business in community approach ?
- Editor: Are you sure community is your friend ?

This workshop asks how we can use methods drawn from design, art, and craft, informed by
interdisciplinary and systems thinking, to materialize not just envisioned ‘things’, but abstract or
invisible ideas and relationships. There is an emerging set of research practices using tangible or
material models, or constructive making and embodying to visualize how people think about concepts
ranging from invisible systems and infrastructures to mental models, personal data which would
otherwise be invisible, or even the phenomenological dimensions of experiences themselves. Examples
include explorations of the design of public services, healthcare processes, mental health experiences,
career paths, crafters’ movements, and experiences of social networks (Aguirre Ulloa and Paulsen,

Taking innovation from concept through to scalable delivery is complex, contested and under-theorised process. This report aims to capture the current major themes underpinning scaling, and apply these to the context of the Learning Layers project. An external review of our early ‘Design Research framework for scaling’ has highlighted that the approach is too linear and may rely too heavily on the diffusion of innovation paradigm originally proposed by Everett Rogers in the 1960s, which is less appropriate for scaling innovations in our project. Rather, we start out from design-based research principles where co-design with the users is producing both theories and practical educational interventions as outcomes of the process. This is a robust and appropriate approach suitable for addressing complex problems in educational practice for which no clear guidelines or solutions are available. We suggest that it is therefore also appropriate for multi-faceted and complex research projects such as Learning Layers.

The Research Data Alliance: Creating the culture and technology for an intern...Research Data Alliance
All of society’s grand challenges -- be it addressing rapid climate change, curing cancer and other disease, providing food and water for more than seven billion people, understanding the origins of the universe or the mind -- all of them require diverse and sometimes very large data to to be shared and integrated across cultures, scales, and technologies. This requires a new form and new conception of infrastructure. The Research Data Alliance (RDA) is creating and implementing this new data infrastructure. It is building the connections that make data work across social and technical barriers.
RDA launched in March 2013 as a international alliance of researchers, data scientists, and organizations to build these connections and infrastructure to accelerate data-driven innovation. RDA facilitates research data sharing, use, re-use, discoverability, and standards harmonization through the development and adoption of technologies, policy, practice, standards, and other deliverables. We do this through focussed Working Groups, exploratory Interest Groups, and a broad, committed membership of individuals and organizations dedicated to improving data exchange.
I also discuss some early ideas on building community and connecting like minded organizations at different scales.
On the Social Dimensions of Architectural Decisions Henry Muccini
An architecture is recognised to be the output of a (group) design decision process. This process typically involves multiple stakeholders composed into a group with a socio-technical connotation.
From a group decision making perspective, the various stakeholders involved in a design decision process analyze a given problem, propose alternate solutions, indicate their preferred alternative, and arrive at a consensus on the best possible solution. From an organisational and social perspective, the various stakeholders involved in a decision process form an organisational social structure (OSS).
These structures have a significant impact on project success.
In this work, we explore the overlaps and interconnections between group decision-making dynamics and the corresponding social and organisational dimensions, in
the context of architectural knowledge management. We use a meta-model to illustrate these overlaps and interconnections.
Foresight by Online Communities - The Case of Renewable EnergiesMichael Andreas Zeng
Web 2.0 offers manifold ways in order to integrate community members via online communities (OCs) for innovation processes. OCs prove to be a valuable and dynamic source of information. External information sources are also important for foresight in order to be able to identify and monitor all relevant changes. However, traditional foresight methods are rather static in comparison with dynamic OCs. Thus, this study gives first insights into the use of OCs for foresight. First, based on literature, it is conceptually shown that OCs can contribute to foresight. Second, the question of how to assess the potential of OCs for foresight is considered. Renewable energies OCs are identified using a netnographic approach. One selected OC is analyzed in-depth by applying a prior developed criteria catalog which is based on Popper's (2008) foresight diamond. Each of its four dimensions – creativity, expertise, interaction, and evidence – is operationalized with measurement items taken from literature. In particular, the evidence dimension is supported by a text mining approach. Lastly, a focus group interview proves the usefulness of OCs for foresight. The findings show that OCs can contribute to each dimension of the foresight diamond and serve as an additional source of information for foresight.

Implicitly or explicitly all competing businesses employ a strategy to select a mix
of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
price and product quality), as well as assessing competitive and market conditions
(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).

Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.
