Smooth pursuit eye movements allow both eyes to smoothly track a slowly moving object to keep its image on the fovea. There are two phases: an open loop phase where retinal slip guides initial acceleration for about 100 milliseconds, and a closed loop phase where efference copy of eye velocity is added to retinal slip to compute target velocity and maintain pursuit. Smooth pursuit can track predictable target motion with no phase lag or show a lag behind unpredictable motion like a flying insect.
